Professor Layton vs Phoenix Wright is a gem

    Posted: 04 Apr 2021 02:27 PM PDT

The game is so much fun. They honestly took the best of both worlds. The "boring" investigation part of Ace Attorney is made much more fun by the gameplay aspects (puzzles) of Professor Layton. And then the trial aspect of Ace Attorney is spiced up so that it even has some new aspects which make it more interesting. The story is a little fantasy but it also makes it sort of a breath of fresh air in between all the realistic cases of the main Ace Attorney games.

10/10 been playing non-stop would recommend all Ace Attorney fans to download 3ds emulator and go play.

What happens if 3 Edgeworths from 3 different time periods come to the present post TnT time? The Answer is Phoenix and the Judge getting thoroughly confused.

Why did the Mishams have drawings of scenes from the previous cases? I don't remember ever getting an explanation for that. Specifically, it was the drafts that were painted over for the forgeries.

Replaying the main series in anticipation of DGS1&2, I realised my opinion of some entries has changed quite a bit

    Posted: 04 Apr 2021 06:47 PM PDT

    There are no spoilers below.

Before replaying all six entries, I would've originally ranked them as so: T&T, SoJ, JFA, AA, AJ, DD.

Now? Not so much. To the right of each entry below is the score I gave out of 10 for each case, starting with the first and ending with their last case or DLC (where applicable). 5 meant "good, but nothing special" and 7 meant "very good / great". Anything less than 5 meant the case was severely flawed, in my view. 10 represents the pinacle of the series, which is Bridge to the Turnabout.

In reality, when you consider the averages of my ratings, T&T sits far ahead at 7.6, and then SoJ, AA and DD sit somewhat close to one another at 6.83, 6.7 and 6.58 respectively. I wonder if DGS2 can come anywhere near close to T&T, like some people say it does...

    1 - Trials & Tribulations [7, 8, 5, 8, 10] (no change)

I mean, is this not obvious? Look at those scores!

2 - Spirit of Justice [6, 8, 7, 5, 9, 6] (no change) (including Turnabout Time Traveller, but not including Asinine Attorney)

What just stops it from clinching #1 is a very filler Case 4 (Turnabout Storyteller) and a final case that is somewhat convoluted at times. It otherwise mostly stands toe-to-toe with Trials and Tribulations. It has some of the strongest world-building of any Ace Attorney game, especially in Case 3 (The Rite of Turnabout). Also, this theme needs more love.

    3 - Ace Attorney [5.5, 7, 5, 8, 8] (up 1 place) (including Rise from the Ashes)

The original Ace Attorney, on reflection, tells a very interesting and engaging story by focusing on Phoenix vs. Edgeworth for the bulk of its' cases. Asides from Turnabout Samurai, every case is really good - it's hard to beat the original Ace Attorney, although Dual Destinies comes damn near close.

    4 - Dual Destinies [5, 5.5, 7, 6, 8, 8] (up 2 places) (including Turnabout Reclaimed)

I should've given Dual Destinies more credit. It tells a decently compelling story across a consistently "pretty good" set of cases. What brings down a lot of these cases is the investigation segments - they all manage to feel slow and too streamlined. Not quite sure why I used to think it was the worst entry - I think I was just following others' opinions blindly. Turnabout for Tomorrow is an emotional finale, but it doesn't have the same sense of "oh my god" unlike other finale cases.

    5 - Apollo Justice [8, 4.5, 5, 7] (no change)

While Apollo Justice doesn't hit the highs of Justice for All, it doesn't quite stoop to the lows either (Turnabout Corner and Turnabout Serenade are not as bad as Turnabout Big Top). It just feels low-key overall, with a bland middle act and a finale that seems to ignore Apollo for the most part. It deserves credit for having the best first case, though. Oh, and that soundtrack.

    6 - Justice for All [3, 8, 4, 9] (down 3 places)

Whilst Reunion, then Turnabout and Farewell, My Turnabout are great, the other two cases are not very good. By law of averages, this game falls to the bottom. A shame - but the best entries in the series are consistently good/great, and this game is not consistent. Both this and Apollo Justice are still great visual novels in their own right.

How did your opinions change upon replays?

[Dual Destinies spoilers, but especially 5-5] Theory: the UR-1 Incident eroded public trust in the justice system not just because a prosecutor was convicted of murder and terrorism, but because the cover-up was so blatant.

    Posted: 04 Apr 2021 08:30 AM PDT

In 5-1 to a light extent, but mostly in 5-4 and 5-5 where the truth about the HAT-1 Miracle is revealed, we get the occasional bit of insight as to how the public as well as those involved view the events of seven years ago, and the justice system as a whole.

While the general view seems to be the UR-1 murder was a heinous event and the HAT-1 Miracle was a courageous triumph by Solomon Starbuck, surely some people must have made some sort of connection or gone tinfoil hat over it since Yuri Cosmos goes to great lengths to smooth over such rumours and Aura Blackquill clearly knows better.

We also know that the prosecutor's office had frustrations with the investigation, and when you consider that it was as sloppy as not rewinding the security footage to before the incident really, what other conclusion can we reach besides that the government leaned on them very heavily to accept Simon's confession at face value, not wanting to reveal the phantom's existence to the public? No wonder Aura went to such lengths to force the hand of the Prosecutor's Office.

Therefore, I posit that Aura was far from the only "HAT-1 Truther" out there, and this marked the final nail in the coffin of public trust in the justice system, not merely because in the previous five years, the longest undefeated prosecutor, the chief of police and the former chief prosecutor had all turned out to be murderers (and the attorney who brought the first two down was a lying fraud) but that the government couldn't be relied on to fix any of those problems if it didn't find it convenient to do so.
