    Possible plothole in 2-4

    Posted: 02 Jan 2022 06:14 AM PST

The title, and the plothole has something to do with the Magatama. No, it's not when Engarde denies being the killer.

Anyway, just as a refresher. We do know that Matt hired DeKiller to kill Corrida, because Engarde found out, via the cameras planted in his rival's house, that Juan planned to pose as Matt himself (as Nickel Samurai) and disclose the contents of Celeste's suicide note (whether or not Engarde knew it was forged is quite unknown). This is proven by this conversation in the detention center:

Pearl: Why!? Why would you kill Mr. Corrida...?

Engarde: Because he was about to sling so much dung onto my beautiful public image. Scandals are a little annoying, aren't they?

Phoenix: This is all because of that press conference, isn't it...?

Pearl: If Mr. Corrida had been able to give it, then Mr. Engarde's secret would've...

Engarde: Ah, well, that's what we call "taking advantage of the situation", you know?

Okay, Matt's motive for murder was to prevent Corrida from ruining his image in the press conference. Consequently, Engarde must have known about the conference, obviously. However, when we first meet Matt, he claims to not know about the press conference, which is quite understandable, he is still pretending to play dumb (for context, this conversation appears after you present the press conference ticket to Engarde):

    Engarde: ...? What's that?

Phoenix: It's a ticket for the press conference. You were going to give one after winning the Grand Prix, right?

    Engarde: Huh? Me?

Phoenix: Yes. While you were in-costume no less.

Engarde: Um, *I never heard anything like that, dude. I only heard about the stage show.** I always leave that kind of stuff to my manager.*

Phoenix: (He didn't know...? That's odd...)

I want to draw attention specifically to the boldfaced quote. Here, Matt claims to not know about the press conference, and while he is playing dumb, and thus, lying, how come the Magatama doesn't activate? Engarde is clearly pretending to not know about the conference, but this event was pretty much his whole motive for murder, he was dead-set on preventing Corrida from spilling the beans, so I don't understand why no psyche-locks appear. Did I just heavily misunderstand something or is this an actual plothole?

For anyone that read this text, thanks in advance :)
