Looking Back on The Adventure of the Great Departure

    Posted: 06 Nov 2021 07:02 PM PDT

As someone who joined the series in 2019, I can't imagine how much of a joy it was for longtime fans to see this game get localized. Finding some ratings for this version of the case outside of discussion threads was hard given some people would be reviewing the fan translated version, but from what I've seen, this is a fairly popular case only really held back by how long it is. Time to move from Japanifornia to Japan by looking back on The Adventure of the Great Departure.

    History With This Case

Initially, I thought this was a really great case, serving as a wonderful introduction to the new world, with any issues I had mostly tied to the length of the ending.

This case will be judged by its characters and trial segments. Character criticism will revolve around the character's personality, role in the story, and their actions throughout the case. Trial segment criticism will revolve around the enjoyability of the cross examinations, and quality of the story being told during that segment.

Court is now in session for the trial of The Adventure of the Great Departure.

    Characters

    Ryunosuke Naruhodo

Ryunosuke's perfect. His nervous habits and interactions with Kazuma make him a really likeable character, I like that he's the defendant in this case, and seeing him take Kazuma's role as defense despite his qualifications just to ensure he can go on his trip to Japan is fantastic, making his slow progression from substitute defense to ace attorney all the better. This is my favorite introduction to a new protagonist, and he's my favorite character in this case.

    Kazuma Asogi

Kazuma's perfect. I really enjoyed his friendship with Ryunosuke and the ways he shuts down Taketsuchi's threats. I like how he's willing to risk his trip to London because of his belief in Ryunosuke's innocence, and that he's willing to let Ryunosuke take the lead, as that he's able to see his capability as a lawyer.

    Yujin Mikotoba

Yujin's okay. He doesn't have much to do in this case, so despite his interactions with Kazuma and Ryunosuke, he didn't leave much of an impact on me.

    Susato Mikotoba

Susato's good. Like Yujin, her limited presence doesn't allow many opportunities to build her character, but I enjoyed her getting us evidence of Jezaille's research.

    Taketsuchi Auchi

Taketsuchi's great. While not my favorite appearance from a Payne, I enjoyed his interactions with Ryunosuke and Kazuma, and I think this case did a better job showcasing his skills as a prosecutor in a unique manner, like him blinking to prove a point, than other cases with a Payne usually do.

    Judge (Japan)

The Judge is okay. He didn't leave much of an impression on me, but that's basically been the norm for judges recently.

    Satoru Hosonaga

Satoru's great. He wasn't always interesting, and the coughing felt unnecessary to me, I enjoyed his pursuit for justice and how he was willing to take evidence from the crime scene to ensure a better examination than what the officials could do.

    Iyesa Nosa

Iyesa's great. He's not that major of a character, but I enjoyed some of his military and fatherly interactions with the cast and Aido, and I like his reason for why he took Jezaille's steak.

    Kyurio Korekuta

Kyurio's okay. His personality didn't really impact me, and his coin was more interesting than he was.

    John H. Wilson

    He dead.

    Jezaille Brett

Jezaille's perfect. She's extremely malicious with her low views on Japanese people compared to British people and how she only cares for herself. I like how her views on Japan played a part in both her plan to kill John through the curare and her defeat through the bites marks in the steak, the reveal that she can speak Japanese is really cool, and I like that the case doesn't give away her motive for murder.

    Overall

This is a really good cast. The characters ranged from servicable to incredible, with most of them nearing the positive side of this spectrum.

    Trial, Part 1

    Cross Examinations

These are bad cross examinations. There aren't many contradictions to find despite the segment being nearly an hour long, and I feel the segment devoted too much time to the dialogue and tutorials, the latter I feel were poorly executed, as I understand Ryunosuke is the least experienced protagonist of the series, but moments like Kazuma making us present John's profile rather than letting us look for him and select his profile, or getting the medical record and going through all the testimony to make Kazuma guide us on examining rather than him suggesting that we check out once we get it really hurt the experience.

    Story

This is an okay opening chapter. I feel too much of the segment focused on extending interactions between characters that could've been shortened by about 20% while still carrying the same meaning, which ultimately makes the buildup to the revelation that a woman was with John somewhat underwhelming, but I really like Ryunosuke being the defendant and taking Kazuma's role as his attorney so Kazuma can keep his trip to London no matter what.

    Overall

This is a meh opening segment. A lot of my issues were based around this feeling of padding the story out with multiple lines that probably could've been condensed and the most handholding tutorials I've seen from the series, making for a below-average experience overall.

    Trial, Part 2

    Cross Examinations

These are good cross examinations. While still not perfect pacing or tutorial-wise, they're a major improvement from the last segment's and managed to feel more engaging overall.

    Story

This is a fantastic chapter. I feel the unnecessary focus issue of the last segment was toned down a bit, the revelations about Jezaille's role in the case and the possibility of John being poisoned are great, and I liked the reveal of Jezaille speaking Japanese, seeing Ryunosuke find a contradiction on his own when the trial was about to end, and Susato's appearance being a cliffhanger ending.

    Overall

This is a great trial segment. It's still got some aspects that hold it back from matching the usual quality of a trial, but it was far more engaging and interesting than the segment before it.

    Trial, Part 3

There are no cross examinations, my worldview is a lie.

This is perfect gameplay. My issues with the last two segments don't feel like an issue here, and more of the segment felt to consistently fun and engaging contradiction finding.

    Story

This is a perfect final chapter. The revelations about the true events of the crime, curare, and the beef steak are the most impactful of the case. Ryunosuke finding the ability to stand strong as an ace attorney is fantastic. The reveal that Jezaille will be tried in another country and possibly get away with her crime is really cool, and her motive and Kazuma's request for Ryunosuke not being specified is great to leave some uncertainty in the ending.

    Overall

This is a perfect final segment. The gameplay managed to remain consistently enjoyable, and the extensions of the script felt like they benefited the story rather than feeling like attempts to keep the player's focus.

    How I Would Improve

If I were to try and improve this case while retaining most of its original identity, I would make two changes.

    1. I would make Kyurio more entertaining. Yujin can't really be improved unless more of the case was devoted to him and Kazuma, and an okay Judge is nothing new, so for Kyurio, I think his character would be better if he was either more charming by giving him more relics to gush over, maybe by giving each of his animations a different relic, or by making him more of a characters that flaunts his relics and have jokes about him being embarrassed when no one cares. The best part about him was the joke of him dropping his knife in Iyesa's boot, and unless there was more stuff on par with that, I feel it would've made more sense to remove him and change the circumstances around the coin.

    2. I would shorten the script. I don't think there were any events in this case that felt unnecessary, but I feel parts of the script are longer than necessary. This is more of a generalization than an example, but topics that could be covered in maybe five lines are stretched out to seven to ten lines, either due to the overexplained tutorials or conversations where thoughts that could fit one line are extended to two. I felt the mainline games' trials had tighter scripts and quicker paced gameplay, but a lot of the case, specifically the opening segment, felt like I was just watching the case happen rather than causing it to happen.

    Final Verdict

This is a really good case. It seems like for every issue this case had, there was something to either combat it or fix it. For every servicable character that doesn't leave a major impact on me, there's an incredible character that serves their role in the story better than their modern era counterpart, and for how lackluster the gameplay and story initially, they both ended up being far more enjoyable and engaging than most opening cases tend to be. So despite what the beginning of the case made me believe, this was an enjoyable overall experience and a really good introduction to this new world of AA.
