Who is making Phoenix write Steel Samurai reports????

    Posted: 05 Nov 2021 08:19 PM PDT

Please help clarify who Phoenix is referring to here: I'm pretty certain he's talking about Maya but my sister is dead set that Phoenix is referring to Edgeworth.

This takes place during Phoenix's stay at the hospital when you examine the massive stack of steel samurai DVDs

Phoenix: a "kid" I know keeps sending them to me.

Apollo: "Like a niece or nephew?"

    Phoenix: "…something like that".

Apollo…I didn't know you were into this stuff, Mr. Wright."

Phoenix: "Well, what else is there to do when you're stuck in bed? They'll just keep piling up if I don't watch them. Now's the only time I get to watch and write my reports."

    Apollo: "…reports?"

Phoenix: It's a long story. Like a lot of things.

It's ironic that an important part of the trial, which was discovering that Brett was killed by poisoning, just like her victim in the first game, because this fact was determined by the constriction in her pupils. The coroner and Rei are the only people who've ever seen Brett's eyes

Great ace attorney 2 vent (spoilers)

    Posted: 05 Nov 2021 09:18 PM PDT

Okay so when we were first introduced to Kazuma he was easily my favourite character, and I was really disappointed that he died in such a random way, when he survived I was really happy but man I'm playing the fourth case In GAA2 right now and this guy is such a dick

Especially with that learned friend crap

Just wanna be clear overall I adore GAA and GAA2 I think it outdoes the original but I hope they didn't revive Kazuma just to make him a douchebag

Not looking to be spoiled just needed to get that off my chest

For those who have played PLvsA, is it good, and is it worth a play? How does it compare to other games in the series? I've played all other entries in the series so far including the spinoffs.

What would be the best platform to play it?

Looking Back on Turnabout Time Traveler + Final Thoughts on Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney: Spirit of Justice

    Posted: 05 Nov 2021 11:24 PM PDT

This is the 40th case, which means this is the first game released after PW to end with a five-case milestone. From what I've seen, this is a case people either love, hate, or tolerate. Time to leave the modern era of AA behind for now by looking back on Turnabout Time Traveler.

    History With This Case

From my most recent memory, I thought this was a great case, being one of the weaker cases of the game, but the better of the two DLC cases.

This case will be judged by its characters, trial segments, and investigation segments. Character criticism will revolve around the character's personality, role in the story, and their actions throughout the case. Trial segment criticism will revolve around the enjoyability of the cross examinations, and quality of the story being told during that segment. Investigation segment criticism will revolve around the enjoyability of the general investigations, and quality of the story being told during that segment.

Court in now in session for the trial of Turnabout Time Traveler.

    Characters

    Phoenix Wright

Phoenix is good. His personality is probably the weakest it's been in the game so far, but I really like how he goes along with the idea of time travel to prove the possibility of Ellen being innocent without time travel.

    Trucy Wright

Trucy's bad. She's barely in the case, and she's basically if her appearance at the end of 6-2 was her entire character. She's my least favorite character in this case.

    Athena Cykes

Athena's okay. She doesn't offer anything to the case like Apollo did in 5-DLC, and most of the time I just feel bad for her.

    Larry Butz

Larry's good. He's not as fun or developed as he tends to be, but I like some of his love crisis interactions and him acting like an attorney a couple times.

    Ellen Wyatt

Ellen's great. Her personality didn't really work for me, as the contrast between her acting like a calm bride and emotional wife only worked for me at the beginning and ending, but the time traveler aspect of her was cool, and I was really invested in her love for Sorin and that she would be winning to stay with him despite him accusing her of the murder initially and what issues his memory disorder could end up causing.

    Ema Skye

Ema's good. She doesn't offer much like usual, but her interactions with Miles were the best reference to PW, along with kind of doubling as an AAI reference.

    Maya Fey

Maya's meh. She has a couple of good moments, but she's mostly here to act childish and make a mess.

    Miles Edgeworth

Miles is good. This is my least favorite 3DS appearance of his since I feel his personality and development are at their weakest here, but I liked his interactions with Ema, and his reactions to the power of love were the funniest he's been in these three appearances.

    Dumas Gloomsbury

    He dead.

    Sorin Sprocket

Sorin's great. While his silent, self contained personality didn't do much for me, his car crash and mental disorder were really interesting and led to some really sweet and emotional moments with Ellen.

    Pierce Nichody

Pierce is fantastic. While his intial personality didn't intrigue me much, his surgeon personality was far more entertaining and interesting. His motive for murder is one of my favorites in the series, and seeing how much he's lost when Selena gave her life for Sorin's and how he used Dumas and Sorin to enact his revenge is incredibly tragic, making his realization that what he's done to them and Ellen hit harder. He's my favorite character in this case.

    Selena Sprocket

    She double dead.

Hopefully I'll have more names for this guy when AA7 is released.

    Judge okay again.

    Overall

This is an alright cast. The returning ranged from bad to above average, and the cast's main worth ultimately came from the new characters.

    Investigation - Day 1

    Investigation

This is a good investigation. I feel conversations during parts of the segment like the opening went on a bit too long, but I liked investigating the crime scene and foyer well enough.

    Story

This is an okay first chapter. I like what we learn about the crime scene and new characters, but I feel the segment spent too much time focusing on the fact that this is a case about characters from the first game.

    Overall

This is an alright opening segment. It gets the job done, but it could've done more.

    Trial - Day 1

    Cross Examinations

These are fantastic cross examinations. While I feel a quicker paced trial or a few more contradictions could've made the gameplay perfect, the current trial is still really fun and engaging.

    Story

This is a great chapter. The revelations about the murder and Larry's role in the case are great, I like how Phoenix temporarily suggests time travel is possible to find a valid explanation not involving time travel, and while the PW acknowledgement still feels unnecessary, I like Ema and Miles's interactions.

    Overall

A really great trial segment. It still has similar issues to the first segment, but to a much lesser degree, making for a more enjoyable experience.

    Investigation - Day 2

    Investigation

This is a perfect investigation. The gaps in gameplay don't feel like an issue here as I feel this segment does the most to fill the time out of all the segments.

    Story

This is a perfect chapter. The new stuff we learn about the case is great, I like Sorin's sudden injury and panic attack without his notebook, and this segment gets rid of basically all the PW acknowledgement keeping the focus on the case at hand.

    Overall

This is a perfect investigation segment. All the issues with the last segments are gone, and I'm completely satisfied with how this segment played out.

    Trial - Day 2 Part 1

    Cross Examinations

These are perfect cross examinations. They're almost the same as the first trial segment's, but with the added benefit of a faster paced trial making it more engaging.

    Story

This is a perfect chapter. The revelations about Sorin's role in the case are great, the reveal that Sorin has a memory disorder that ties into the time traveling theme is fantastic, and the way it leads into Sorin being accused only for Pierce to become a possible culprit is really cool.

    Overall

This is a perfect trial segment. It's utilizing the strengths of the last investigation segment and fixing the issues of the first trial segment, making this my favorite segment so far.

    Trial - Day 2 Part 2

    Cross Examinations

These are perfect cross examinations. Much like the last segment, I have no issues here.

    Story

This is a perfect final chapter. The revelations about the true events of the crime are great, Pierce's defeat is fantastic, Sorin proposing to Ellen and her accepting despite what issues may come with his memory disorder was a really sweet moment, and the final anime cutscene was the funniest part of the case.

    Overall

A perfect final segment. After the rough start the case had, I'm completely satisfied with how it ended.

    How I Would Improve

If I were to try and improve this case while retaining most of its original identity, I would make two changes.

    1. I would remove Athena and Trucy. The joke about Athena being afraid of Trucy isn't funny, and if they aren't going to utilize them in the story like they did Apollo in 5-DLC, they should just get rid of them or make their appearances so minor that I would forget they were in this case.

    2. I would tone down the acknowledgement of the first game. I'm not against refering the original game considering SOJ was an anniversary game, but Ema and Miles's interactions were the only good example of it. Most of the time, the case just freezes the story to talk about how old everyone is, or how it's been years since the group has gotten together, and I'd rather they make the PW references more subtle, like borrowing contradictions from PW like how 2-4 borrowed the "fake samurai" twist from 1-3, or structure the case like the three investigation-trial day structure of PW.

    Final Verdict

This is a really good case. Although the returning cast was weak, the case didn't start off on the highest note, and its obsession with the past was probably its biggest flaw, the new characters are great, albeit none of them are perfect, and the case did manage to get better and better overtime becoming more engaging and emotional, resulting in a mostly fun and engaging sendoff to the game, and a mostly satisfying beginning to this break from the modern era of Ace Attorney.

Final Thoughts on Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney: Spirit of Justice

When looking at this game as a whole, it feels like it's trying to be something for every fan. The GBA trilogy fans got Phoenix and 6-1, 6-3, and 6-DLC, the AJ fans got Apollo and 6-2 and 6-5, the DD fans got Athena and 6-4, the AAI fans got more references to and appearances from Miles and more indepth overarching plotpoints than something like the Dark Age of the Law in DD, and the PLvAA and GAA fans got a story about a foreign country with a new legal system and trial gimmick. Why I feel this is relevant is that I feel this game's biggest seems to be that some things felt done not out of ambition or an idea of what would be best, but out of necessity.

They needed a case for Athena, so they combined the last two cases to make 6-5 so they could add 6-4, a one trial case completely disconnected from the plot. They needed a reason for why we should care about Khura'in without scrapping the multiple playable attorneys, so they connected the kingdom to both Phoenix and Apollo through spirit mediums and a new backstory. They needed to justify the existence of the DC Act and explain why Ga'ran would let a trial that could dethrone her continue, so they made her obsessed with power and love watching lawyers suffer without making those traits interesting. They needed to celebrate the 15th anniversary, so they filled 6-DLC with several distracting references are caricatures of the first game.

Doing something out of necessity isn't always a bad thing, but when almost every trait can be tied back to this issue, and when my favorite case, 6-2, feels like it suffers the least and relies the most on ambitious ideas and meaningful development and improvements of concepts from previous games, it makes this fact all the more obvious.

But while this issue does hurt the game by a large amount, and this ultimately is one of the lesser games in the series to me, I still think this is a really good game. The investigation system has seen a major improvement from DD while the trial system is still really fun, this game introduced some of my favorite oneoff characters in the series, 6-2 is one of my favorite cases in the series, and this game has my favorite appearances from Apollo out of all of the games he's been in.

This game is worse than I remembered, but I think replaying this game, and especially 6-5, has helped me further recognize that understanding where I was wrong due to a lack of focus or a hefty amount of bias is the only way I can ever hope to leave an impact on this series much like the impact it left on me. I began this series of replays specifically to tackle this issue I've had, and now that I've replayed this game, I think I better understand why this was beneficial than when I first started.

Despite this and DD on the bottom half of my list of AA games, I think they've taught me the most valuable lessons about myself and how I view this series. So even though this game is worse than I remembered, I'm still glad it's a part of the series, as I don't think I would've recognized the series the way I do now without it.

The name game continues 😂 You can also take a TGAA name approach for them if desired (based on someone's choices in the last post).

    Here are mine:

2-1: A Victim of Turnabout and Circumstance

2-2: Another Fey Feud at the Turnabout
