Ace Attorney Trials with TGAAC Titles

    Posted: 04 Nov 2021 07:21 PM PDT

More or less what the title says, sorry if this has been done before, but it seemed like a fun prompt. Post your ideas below; you can do the trilogy like me, or whichever other games you want. Here are mine for the first three games:

    PWAA (Game 1):

    1. The Adventure of the Absconded Artist
    2. The Adventure of the Misappropriated Memo
    3. The Adventure of the Maleficent Magistrate
    4. The Pursuit of the Buried Memory
    5. The Adventure of the Twisted Verdict

    JfA (Game 2):

    1. The Fable of the Clouded Memory
    2. The Adventure of the Unbreakable Lock
    3. The Memoirs of the Imperiled Pride
    4. The Wild Jack's Last Turn

    T&T (Game 3):

    1. The Adventure of the Untouchable Band
    2. The Adventure of the Ill-fated Reunion
    3. The Adventure of the Grim Concoction
    4. The Debut of the Living Dead
    5. The Trials and Tribulations of Phoenix Wright

What are your top 3 darkest moments in the series?

    Posted: 04 Nov 2021 06:26 PM PDT

My first is when Terry Fawles committed suicide right there on the stand. The concept that Athena wanted to "take [her] mother apart" with the same machine that the doctor used to dissemble the robots is a close runner up. The last is that moment in 6-3 when Nick loses the first part of the trial, and he's biding time for his execution

A little Update on how my first playthrough has been going

    Posted: 04 Nov 2021 05:24 PM PDT

I'm at the 2nd day investigation of Turnabout Goodbyes and I'm loving it, Von Karma seems like he's gonna be the prosecutor for the next episode or two, and I've heard the next episode after this is some people's favorites, currently my favorite character is a tie between Maya Fey (I love her dialogue, like when Nick tells her to go and get the fire department to spray her with a hose, and She actually does it) and Detective Gumshoe (I love how it's now cannon that he owns a dog)

This is also the second time this game has helped me, the first time was when I was going through a depressed phase of always not being sure about the games I buy and ending up in them feeling underwhelming, wich ended when I brought this game, Now it's helped me battle with currently battling through a fever, this game will definitely be up there with my favorites.

Out of curiosity, what's your favorite ost in the game, mine is the Investigation theme, as I heard it in a video about 7 years ago and eventually gave up trying to find the song, so I had a big grin on my face when I heard it first play in Ace Attorney, my other favorites are the cornered theme and the Wright and Co Law Offices Theme

    Looking Back on Turnabout Revolution

    Posted: 05 Nov 2021 12:12 AM PDT

We've reached the final main-game case of Apollo's Phoenix's most recent game. From what I've seen, while reviews are mostly positive, this is a pretty controversial case, ranked alongside the best and worst cases of the series. Let's say goodbye to Khura'in for now while looking back on Turnabout Revolution.

    History With This Case

From my most recent memories, I thought this was a fantastic case, being my favorite mainline finale case as, much like 6-3, I thought it was nearly flawless, but if that case is anything to go back, my biases were likely covering any issues.

This case will be judged by its characters, trial segments, and investigation segments. Character criticism will revolve around the character's personality, role in the story, and their actions throughout the case. Trial segment criticism will revolve around the enjoyability of the cross examinations, and quality of the story being told during that segment. Investigation segment criticism will revolve around the enjoyability of the general investigations, and quality of the story being told during that segment.

Court in now in session for the trial of Turnabout Revolution.

    Characters

    Apollo Justice

Apollo's perfect. I really enjoy his interactions with Dhurke and how he reflects on his past, showcasing how much he wanted to forget his childhood but slowly becomes more open to embracing it. Him going against Phoenix in court, while weak on Phoenix's side, is great on his side as it feels like a natural way to continue off of Phoenix's praise of him in 6-2. The way he helps Nahyuta and Rayfa overcome their opression and fear is fantastic, and seeing him react to the reveal that Dhurke is dead hits hard, but ultimately makes his victory and him changing his focus from defending Dhurke to saving the kingdom incredible. And his final choice to stay in Khura'in and open his own law office to repair Khura'in's legal system was a perfect conclusion to this chapter of his story. This is my favorite appearance of Apollo's, and he's my favorite character in this case.

    Trucy Wright

Trucy's good. She doesn't offer much to the case, but I enjoyed her interactions with Apollo and Dhurke, and her sneaking on the plane was funny.

    Dhurke Sahdmadhi

Dhurke's perfect. I really enjoy how his interactions with the rest of the cast and how he balances being a joking, caring father with being a determined leader of the rebellion. I like the reveal of him not being as menacing as the previous cases would suggest, along with learning more about his relationships with Apollo and Nahyuta. The reveal of his death is one of the hardest hitting moments of the series, but before that, I really like how him being dead is utilized in the case via channeling and how he initially ruins Inga's plans to blackmail Phoenix.

    Ema Skye

Ema's okay. Like in 6-3, she doesn't leave much of an impact on me and feels like she's just here to be a detective.

    Archie Buff

    He dead.

    Armie Buff

Armie's fantastic. When she's using her drone, she's one of the funniest character in the game, and while the emotional beats the courthouse were weaker than at the crime scene, I like how she and Apollo learn to understand each other through the deaths of their parents.

    Paul Atishon-Wimperson

Paul's good. He's not that funny like I remembered him being, but it's cool to see how he used Phoenix in his pursuit to gain political power.

    Pearl Fey

Pearl's okay. Again, not my least favorite appearance of hers, and this is probably her most natural appearance of the 3DS games, but she doesn't leave as major of an impact on me as her best GBA appearances.

    Datz Are'bal

Datz is perfect. He's an extremely fun and charming character again, I like how he reacts to how much Apollo has changed, seeing him react to being arrested in a positive manner is extremely funny, and I love the fact that his rebel antics at the bazaar ended up impacting the Divination Seance by accident.

    Phoenix Wright

Phoenix is good. I didn't find him bad during the civil trial as much as I found him confusing on if I should view him as a prosecutor or an indirect mentor, but he's ultimately saved during the Khura'in section due to his interactions with Miles and his reflection on his history with Apollo.

    Athena Cykes

Athena's bad. While there's nothing here that feels contradictory to me like in the last case, she was the most annoying here out of any case, mostly interrupting interactions between Apollo and someone else, and while she feels necessary to the civil trial, the fact she doesn't help out during the Khura'in trial makes her feel entirely unnecessary for the rest of the case, as well as undermines the idea of her wanting to learn from Apollo like the ending suggests.

    Not Khura'in Judge

The US Judge is okay. Another appearance that doesn't affect me one way or the other.

    Miles Edgeworth

Miles is great. While I feel 5-5 did a better job showcasing him as a changed person post-AAI2, I prefer his personality here, as the new environment, characters, and existence of the Plumed Punisher give him a lot of fun and charming moments.

    Rayfa Padma Khura'in

Rayfa's perfect. Her personality and development are at their best here, with the childish and royal aspects of her personality being a lot more enjoyable than they tend to be, and her overcoming Ga'ran's control of her after having trouble handling the death of Inga and the reveal of her being Nahyuta's brother being great character building moments.

    Ga'ran Sigatar Khura'in

Ga'ran's awful. Her entire existence feels like nothing more than a justification for things. Her being the culprit feels like they couldn't come up with a reason for why she introduced the DC Act and why the rebellion hates her. Her lust for power and enjoyment of seeing attorneys suffer feel like lackluster coverups for why attorneys still being legal and her allowing Dhurke's trial to go on aren't plotholes. Her allowing Rayfa the possibility of performing a seance rather than preventing it feels like there wasn't any other way to develop Rayfa. She's my least favorite final culprit, and the only reason I can't call her worthless is the pursuit to her defeat and her personality not being outright annoying.

    Nahyuta Sahdmadhi

Nahyuta's okay. I really like how he's developed during the second half of the case, but his personality was somewhere between the tolerability of 6-3 and annoyance of 6-4, and his first interaction with Apollo didn't really do much for me.

    Maya Fey

Maya's okay. She's gone for most of the case, and the scenes of her hiding Dhurke's death and her perspective of the murder didn't hit the same emotions as similar scenes in 2-4 or 3-5.

    Inga Karkhuul Ai'hem Notarai Din'zis Fa'ghen Bi'jhi Sentai Ornem Khura'in III

    He double dead.

    Ahlbi Ur'gaid

Ahlbi's good. His personality still isn't that noteworthy, but I liked the cravat joke with Miles and how him being at the bazaar indirectly makes him important to the case.

    Beh'leeb Inmee

Wait, she was in this case?

    Not US Judge

The Khura'in Judge is okay. He felt the same as the US Judge, which considering they also look similar just makes me think of how funny it would've been if they were revealed to be related in some way like in 3-5.

    Amara Sigatar Khura'in

Amara's good. Similar to Mia in 3-5, she feels less like a character and more like something everyone talks about due to her minor appearance, but I like the reveal that she was Nayna and that she was watching over Rayfa the whole time.

    Overall

This is a good cast. The amount of really enjoyable and really unenjoyable appearances about average each other out, with the rest of the characters making this an overall enjoyable cast.

    Investigation - Day 1

    Investigation

This is a perfect investigation. I really enjoyed investigating all the environments, the perceiving, fingerprint, and boot examining sections were cool, the section in the cave managed to keep me engaged despite being only dialogue options due to how unique the situation was, and I enjoyed all of my time here.

    Story

This is a fantastic opening chapter. Apollo and Dhurke's development in 6-2 and 6-3 makes the reveal that they're family feel more natural than the reveal of Clay in DD, learning about both the murder and the Founder's Orb is engaging, I like how Apollo and Sarge connect with each other through the death of their parents, Apollo and Dhurke's journey through the cave is really cool and I like how they're developed during the scene, and I like the buildup to Phoenix and Apollo's courtroom battle.

My only issue would be the "I grew up in Khura'in" line, but not because I don't believe Apollo would keep his childhood hidden considering he reluctantly works with Dhurke and has a reason for hating his childhood. It's because the way it's worded makes it seem like he wanted to tell them but just forgot to, and it would've made more sense if he said something along the lines of "I never wanted to tell anyone about this, but... I grew up in Khura'in."

    Overall

A borderline perfect opening segment. Outside of one line of dialogue, I have no issues here.

    Trial - Day 1

    Cross Examinations

These are great cross examinations. While not consistently engaging due to some contradictions or gaps in gameplay, I really enjoyed most of what was available.

    Story

This is a meh chapter. I like the revelations about the murder, the reveal of the the Founder Orb's true nature was cool, and I liked how Maya's kidnapping is revealed, but I feel the battle between Phoenix and Apollo, while not offensively illogical like Phoenix's disbarment in 4-4, was underwhelming, as I wasn't sure if Phoenix was meant to be a major enemy on par with a prosecutor, or a secretive mentor that gives you hints without revealing his and Paul's connection. Along with that, I feel Armie's emotional moments were weaker than the last segment's, and the characters praising Apollo felt unnecessary considering he didn't win the case by himself.

    Overall

This is an alright trial segment. The payoff of going up against Phoenix felt weak considering the concept itself was basically the peak of the story, but it was ultimately saved by being a fun segment to play through.

    Investigation - Day 2 Part 1

    Investigation

This is a good investigation. Having only one place to actually investigate is pretty weak, but the tomb was one of the more fun locations to investigate in the game.

    Story

This is a great chapter. Starting from scratch on a new murder case is a bit jarring, and Nahyuta and Apollo's confrontation didn't hit hard for me, but I like what we learn about Maya's kidnapping and Inga's murder, and having Dhurke be the defendant is cool.

    Overall

This is a really good investigation segment. I feel its biggest was trying to be a beginning to a new case and a middle chapter to another case, but it came out mostly unharmed.

    Investigation - Day 2 Part 2

    Investigation

This is a good investigation. While Inga's home wasn't as fun to investigate as the tomb, I like how they included examining the outside residence while Ahlbi's around to progress the plot.

    Story

This is a great chapter. Much like the last segment, the stuff we learn about Inga, like the minor stuff with his back issues and the major stuff with his safe is great, and it's cool to see an investigation from another person's perspective, like the sections with Maya in 2-4, though I feel the lead into the next segment was a pretty weak ending for this segment, and I think either combining the segments or giving Phoenix and bit more time to worry about Apollo and Athena would've helped.

    Overall

This is another really good investigation segment. It has similar strengths and weaknesses to the last segment, but I feel it's due less to being both a beginning and middle, and more so due to just having a similar amount of worthwhile content.

    Investigation - Day 2 Part 3

    Investigation

This is a great investigation. The rebel hideout is about on par to investigate as the tomb and Inga's home, but this segment gets the benefit of more evidence presenting and the perceiving section.

    Story

This is a perfect chapter. I like how it continues from the last segment, the stuff we learn about Amara, Dhurke, and Apollo's father, Jove, is great, the reveal that Dhurke will die soon is really tense, and the ending made the rebellion and Nahyuta more interesting than the first Khura'in investigation segment did.

    Overall

This is a fantastic investigation segment. It fixed a lot of issues with the last two segments, making for an incredible build up to the final trial.

    Trial - Day 2 Part 1

    Cross Examinations + Divination Seance

This is good gameplay. I feel the gaps in gameplay were the most overbearing of the case so far, but the cross examinations and Divination Seance were still fun.

    Story

This is a perfect chapter. The revelations about Inga's murder and the circumstances around it are great, I like how Ahlbi and Datz's interaction in the bazaar ended up playing a part in altering Inga's death, and Rayfa collapsing before showing Inga's final moments and coming back despite Ga'ran's attempts to stop her is fantastic.

    Overall

A really great trial segment. While the gameplay could've been made better, this is a great beginning to the end.

    Trial - Day 2 Part 2

    Cross Examinations

These are fantastic cross examinations. While I could've done without the pressing-only testimonies, it's still a really fun and engaging experience, and this segment did a better job at filling the gaps between testimonies with more player input and a perceiving section.

    Story

This is a perfect chapter. The revelations about Amara's role in the story are great, the reveal of Nayna being Amara and her being shot after Ga'ran becomes a suspect are cool, and the reveal of Dhurke being dead all along is still a heavily impactful, tragic moment, and seeing Apollo overcome Dhurke's death as his goal moves from defending Dhurke to pursuing the truth is fantastic.

    Overall

A borderline perfect trial segment. The improvements on the gameplay and the impact the story left on its own and as the prelude to the finale make this my favorite segment of the case so far.

    Trial - Day 2 Part 3

    Cross Examination + Divination Seance

This is perfect gameplay. The gaps in gameplay don't feel like an issue here, and everything offered is consistently fun and engaging.

    Story

This is a perfect final chapter. The revelations about and connections between Inga and Jove's murders are great, Nahyuta confessing to Inga's murder but then returning to the rebellion is fantastic, the reveal that Rayfa and Nahyuta are related and Nahyuta was keeping her safe are cool, Ga'ran's defeat is the only good thing about her, the reference to Lamiroir is cool, and Apollo staying in Khura'in to help rebuild the legal system is the incredible.

    Overall

This is a perfect final segment. All the issues with the previous segments are gone, and I am completely satisfied with how this case ended.

    How I Would Improve

If I were to try and improve this case while retaining most of its original identity, I would make two changes.

    1. I would give Ga'ran an interesting personality. Just this one change could improve her character by a substantial amount.

So many of my issues with her tie back into her personality, because several conveniences in the story like the DC Act not outlawing attorneys or her letting the trial carry on all tie into the idea that she's obsessed with power and enjoys watching attorneys suffer, but she's not interesting, so while I don't find these aspects of the story to be plotholes, having them tie into Ga'ran makes all of the explanations feel like excuses that are only saved by how they impact the characters and the rest of the story, like the DC Act testing Phoenix's ideology of believing in your client until the bitter end, or Ga'ran's trial and guilt developing Apollo and Nahyuta.

This is a similar issue I had with Franziska: she goes through a lot of subtle development after JFA, like becoming an Interpol agent and helping Miles out more, but because I didn't like her personality, these aspects didn't feel like development and felt more like excuses for her being in an environment she otherwise wouldn't belong in. I feel a character's personality is their most important aspect, because most of the time, no matter how much meaningful development they go through as a person, and no matter how they help improve or develop other characters, it doesn't matter if I don't want to invest my time into this character on a base level.

    1. I would combine the last three investigation segments. Because they have to serve as both the middle of the case and the opening to a new plotline, along with the characters being divided into two groups, parts of the story and gameplay feel empty, and I feel the changing POV and longer timeframe wouldn't be that big of issues compared to the issues the segments have now, especially if the one-segment mindset when developing this new segment could resolve some of these new issues.

    Final Verdict

This is a really good case. There are a number of issues that make this case not as good as I remember, like the bad appearances from Athena and Ga'ran, and the confusing civil trial, along with small issues with some characters and segments that worsen the experience through their quantity, but a lot about this case managed to be just as good, and in some cases better than I remembered. Like 6-3, while I don't like it as much as I initially did, I better understand it and I think it's a worthy inclusion and finale to the game, even if I wish the issues I found could've been resolved.

    7.7763157895/10, it's going between 1-2 and 6-3.

Turnabout Goodbyes for me, it was just shocking to see Edgeworth after seeing the culprit twice already.

Gotta mention Imprisoned Turnabout too though, it was just so creepy and the way the music swells as it pans to Knightley's corpse is simply great
