    Barok van Zieks

    Posted: 14 Nov 2021 06:15 PM PST

Oh my gosh 😂 I've just started 1-3 and I love how extra Barok is. He's so dramatic all of the time and bringing a whole damn carriage into the courtroom? He's like first game Edgeworth but 5x more extra I love him

Edit: Just heard his theme and DAMM! Good soup.

Man learned enough about Rakugo to shock Blackquill despite only having a single night to learn about it, with that same night having been spent on a plane flying from Khura'in immediately after Rites of Turnabout.

This man is probably godly at everything except being a prosecutor.

Probably makes a mean fajita too, with plenty of red and yellow bell peppers

An Interesting Thing I Noticed in Trials & Tribulations

    Posted: 14 Nov 2021 10:49 AM PST

In The Stolen Turnabout (3-2), when Phoenix points out that the Mask⭐DeMasque that stole the urn was the fake because he lacked a brooch, Godot pulls out the brooch out of nowhere as surprise evidence and says the following:

GODOT: Ha...! The broach you're talking about... Do you mean this?

    GUMSHOE: Ah...!

    PHOENIX: Th-That's...! Mask☆DeMasque's broach!

JUDGE: Wh-Where did you find it!?

GODOT: Well I've always had a good nose for evidence... I got it at the crime scene. It was hidden in the shadow of a big female Buddha statue.

GUMSHOE: Wh-Why didn't you tell me about that, sir!?

GODOT: ...I always put evidence away in my pocket. ...After all, it's the safest place for crucial evidence.

Which also happens to be the exact same thing that Edgeworth did against Mia and Diego in Turnabout Beginnings.

EGDEWORTH: The scarf you are searching so desperately for... ...Is it this one, perchance?

    MIA: ...Ah!

GUMSHOE: Wh-Where did you find that, sir!?

EGDEWORTH: On Dusky Bridge. I was there first, and decided to conduct my own investigation.

GUMSHOE: Wh-Why...? Why didn't you tell me?

EDGEWORTH: I made a decision to keep all pieces of evidence in my personal satchel. It's the safest place I know.

So we have a scenario where the prosecutor brings out the missing surprise evidence that the defense pointed out, to which they claim that they directly investigated the scene, to which Gumshoe questions why weren't they told about the surprise evidence, to which the prosecutor says the safest place for evidence is their own personage.

I love how Godot basically took lessons from Edgeworth on "how to be a jackass 101". I honestly feel that this writing actually might have been intentional, to show how Godot took one out of Edgeworth's playbook once he decided to be a jerk.

It also might have been revenge against Gumshoe for hitting on Mia/working for Edgeworth. /hj

Who would have been released from prison by now? (So up till SOJ) [Spoilers for Investigations as well]

    Posted: 15 Nov 2021 01:29 AM PST

I don't think Sahwit would've been released (but like very soon he will) cause he was an accomplice. I don't know if Redd would be released, depending if it was leaked afterwards but they would've probably talked about. (Also I don't remember if they knew Mia was there.) Vasquez would probably be the earliest as it was self defense iirc. Who else would be released?

Looking Back on The Adventure of the Unspeakable Story + Final Thoughts on The Great Ace Attorney: Adventures

    Posted: 14 Nov 2021 09:44 PM PST

We're at the end of the first half of this duology, and the second to last game left to play. From what I've seen, this case is pretty popular, just barely under the popularity of G-3. Let's finish the first half of this localized last era by looking back on The Adventure of the Unspeakable Story.

    History With This Case

When I first played this case, I thought it was great, being somewhat weak when viewed as a finale, but still an enjoyable inclusion to the game.

This case will be judged by its characters, trial segments, investigation segments, and ??? segment. Character criticism will revolve around the character's personality, role in the story, and their actions throughout the case. Trial segment criticism will revolve around the enjoyability of the cross examinations, and quality of the story being told during that segment. Investigation segment criticism will revolve around the enjoyability of the general investigations, and quality of the story being told during that segment. ??? segment criticism will revolve around the enjoyability of the ???, and quality of the story being told during that segment.

Court in now in session for the trial of The Adventure of the Unspeakable Story.

    Characters

    Ryunosuke Naruhodo

Ryunosuke's fantastic. While I feel his personality wasn't that interesting outside of the courthouse, I enjoyed the interactions he had with the cast during the trial. This is my favorite journey of a new attorney in the series thanks to how much this case develops his values of believing in people with him learning about the truth of G-3 and Gina constantly questioning him about why he's continuing to defend her, and how Susato having to leave before the trial means he has to rely on the people he's learned to trust in Britain throughout the game, making his victory even more satisfying.

    Susato Mikotoba

Susato's great. While I still wasn't interested in her personality, I like her having to leave to get to her sick father halting her studies of British law, and her tampering with the crime scene to check on Gina and to create a contradiction in the culprit's potential falsified testimony, which also makes her doubt herself as a judicial assistant as all she can leave behind is the catdoor device as evidence for Herlock to give to Ryunosuke, and her leaving to Japan is similar to Maya in 1-4 and Franziska in 2-4 as it works both as a sendoff for the character and as a cliffhanger to what they might be doing in a future game.

    Iris Watson

Iris is good. Like the last case, she doesn't feel like that vital of a character outside of using her and Herlock's inventions, but I like how she stands up for and motivates Ryunosuke and Gina during their tough times.

    Herlock Sholmes

Herlock's perfect. While not the most entertaining character in the case, he comes close, and I really enjoyed him being "shot" and meeting with Susato in the hospital to get a piece of evidence, along with how he snuck into the courthouse and helped out the gang both with the evidence and his advice.

    Pop Windibank

    He dead.

    Gina Lestrade

Gina's fantastic. Like Ryunosuke, I wasn't that into her personality before she was arrested, but it got better afterwards when the focus was switched to her sympathetic side. Despite this only being her second appearance, this case makes her feel like a vital addition to the game thanks to how it develops her connections to Magnus in G-3 and her distrust in people as she learns to trust Ryunosuke and improve from her past, while continuing the tradition of "woman we prove didn't commit murder happily goes to jail for a different crime".

    Ashley Graydon

Ashley's good. His personality didn't really interest me, and while his connection to G-3 and plan and connections to the cast in this case were cool, he didn't really feel like a final culprit with a connection to G-3, as much as he felt like a culprit for a midgame case that was reworked into the finale.

    Tobias Gregson

Tobias is fantastic. Like Ryunosuke, while I wasn't interested in his personality outside of the courthouse, he was much more entertaining during the trial thanks to his interactions with the Skulkin brothers. I really like how he has a connection with the culprit throughout the whole case, and blackmailing him into spilling his connection to the case by threatening to play the disks was great.

    Mael Stronghart

Mael's okay. Again, he doesn't feel like a character and feels like a tool to progress the plot.

    Barok van Zieks

Barok's good. I feel his personality and interest are the weakest of the game, and while I really like the discussion he has with Ryunosuke at the end of the case, this feels like a weak final appearance for the game's prosecutor.

    Your Honour

The Judge is okay. Again, he didn't leave an impact on me one way or another.

    John Garrideb

John's okay. Like Bruce in the last case, he feels like a standard juror despite being a returning character.

    Juror No. 2 (Heather Duster)

Juror No. 2's okay. I wasn't interested in her personality, and she was just here to do her job.

Juror No. 3 (Terry O. Copic)

Juror No. 3's good. I wasn't interested in his personality, but I like him assisting in the case by being a stereoscope fan, even if it is a bit of a coincidence.

    Juror No. 4 (Harold Mann)

Juror No. 4's fantastic. I feel his personality was weaker than in the last case, but he's still a fairly charming character, and I really enjoy him being a surgeon and how he applies that to the case both in the past by being Herlock's surgeon and in the present during the jury's debates.

Juror No. 5 (Enid G. Lishton)

Juror No. 5's great. I wasn't interested in her personality, but I really like how she was the one to call in Ashley by knowing him personally, along with how she plays a part in the case when morse code becomes a factor.

    Vilen Borshevik

Vilen's perfect. As interesting as it would've been to give him a more serious role, I love the idea of this infamous Russian revolutionary casually serving jury duty among less infamous but equally diverse Londoners. Along with that, he's a funny character with his English issues and attempts to cover his identity, and he is useful in the case due to his ballistics knowledge and expertise.

    Nash Skulkin

Nash is perfect. The interactions he has with his brother, Ryunosuke, and Tobias are the most consistently funny of the game, I love how he was brought in as a witness to a crime he didn't commit while at the same time almost killing Herlock by shooting him, and I like how he has a connection to the culprit and that he remains useful even after his crime and role in the case is solved. He's one of my two favorite characters in this case.

    Ringo Skulkin

    Ditto Nash.

    Overall

This is a great cast. It still has its standard characters, but almost every character in the returning cast, new cast, and even the jury either feel on par or better than their last appearance, making this my favorite cast of the game.

    Investigation, Day 1

    Investigation

This is a fantastic investigation. While it's still not entirely engaging, it's my favorite of the game so far, as Herlock's home and the pawnbrokery have been the most interesting locations to investigate, the Dance of Deduction is still fun, and I like how they throw in more of having to select people to talk to them to break up the conversations.

    Story

This is a fantastic first chapter. While not everything that happened or got introduced was interesting, I liked the case starting off in Herlock's home and everyone heading to the pawnbrokery, the case continuing the aspects of G-3 involving Gina and Magnus is cool, Eggert holding everyone at gunpoint was great, and I think the bloated dialogue problem from previous cases, currently, isn't that prominent here.

    Overall

This is a fantastic opening segment. It's still not perfect, but the gameplay feels far more engaging, and the story feels more focused than most opening, making this my favorite opening segment of the game.

    Investigation, Day 2

    Investigation

This is a bad investigation. Like the first segment of the last case, there's no investigating outside of selecting a person, and the gameplay was entirely sacrificed for the sake of the story.

    Story

This is a great chapter. I wasn't really invested in Gina and Iris's parental issues or Susato's message from Mael, but I really like how the first case's victim is connected to Herlock and Iris, the development of Herlock's unpublished manuscript is cool, and the introduction to the case's murder is great.

    Overall

This is an okay investigation segment. This segment prioritized the story entirely over the gameplay, so while it was boring to play, the story was still enough to salvage this segment.

    Investigation, Day 3

    Investigation

This is a bad investigation. Again, there's nothing here.

    Story

This is a perfect chapter. While the last two segments had stuff that weren't entirely interesting to me, I was completely invested in everything here, from Susato having to leave the next day, to Gina's connection to Magnus and her not having a lawyer, to Tobias's reputation in Herlock's novels, and so on. I have no issues here.

    Overall

This is a good investigation segment. Again, the gameplay was entirely sacrificied for the narrative, but this is the best chapter of the story so far.

    Investigation, Day 4

    Investigation

This is a perfect investigation. I like how the crime and the storeroom give the pawnbrokery new value as an investigatable location, and I really enjoy how they encorporate evidence examination and presenting to keep the variety between conversations. This is the first investigation of the game which has felt consistently engaging.

    Story

This is a fantastic chapter. While I feel they could've cut out the conversation devoted entirely to stereoscopic images, everything else from the stuff we learn about the case, to the further developed connections the case has to G-3, to the gang and Gina's conversation, to Ryunosuke and Susato's goodbyes, to the ending with Herlock and Susato, is all great.

    Overall

A borderline perfect investigation segment. This segment fixed so many of the issues I felt plagued the rest of the game, making this my favorite investigation segment of the game.

    Trial, Part 1

    Cross Examination + Summation Examination

This is okay gameplay. The one cross examination is underwhelming, and while I like the summation examination and how you pry out evidence from it, I feel it's weaker than the last summation examination in the last case.

    Story

This is a good chapter. The revelations and character events didn't really feel that major, but while it is a big coincidence, I like how the stereoscopic image gimmick ended up playing a part in the deduction.

    Overall

This is an alright trial segment. It's one of the weaker segments of the case so far, but it's mostly due to just being average with some minor high and low aspects.

    Trial, Part 2

    Cross Examinations + Summation Examination

This is perfect gameplay. This is the first time since G-1 that I found a trial segment to be consistently fun and engaging.

    Story

This is a great chapter. While there once again aren't any major character events, the revelations about the case, Herlock's condition, and how the case involves the events of G-3 and Eggert are highly impactful.

    Overall

This is a fantastic trial segment. This is the first time since G-1 that I've enjoyed a trial segment this much, as the gameplay feels consistently engaging, and the story is still enjoyable.

    Trial, Part 3

    Cross Examinations

These are okay cross examinations. I feel this could've benefited from more cross examinations, but I like the spin on questioning witnesses by picking Ashley and Tobias during Gina's cross examination.

    Story

This is an okay chapter. I like Ryunosuke and Gina's recollections of the past, and the revelations are alright, but this mostly felt like a filler segment that either reexplain stuff we already know, or kill time while major stuff happens like getting the box from the pawnbrokery.

    Overall

This is an okay trial segment. I feel this is the weakest segment of the case since while there is some good stuff here, it felt mostly standard throughout the whole experience.

    Trial, Part 4/Trial, Part 5/Investigation

    Cross Examinations

These are okay cross examinations. Not as engaging as the best of the case, but not as lackluster as the worst of the game.

    Story

This is a great final chapter. I feel the ending went on for too long, it felt like the main plot of the case was supposed to end a lot of times, and I feel Iris spilling the content of the music discs was a poor way to include a cliffhanger and I wish the contents of the discs would've remained a secret, but the revelations are still great, Susato's involvement in the case was cool, and I really like Gina and Susato's departures and Barok telling Ryunosuke he'll someday learn about Barok's past, which I feel is a far more fitting cliffhanger.

    Overall

This is a good final segment. It felt kind of underwhelming for the final segment, but there was enough satisfying stuff here to feel like a worthwhile conclusion.

    How I Would Improve

If I were to try and improve this case while retaining most of its original identity, I would make two changes.

    1. I would cut Mael from the case. Once again, he offers nothing outside of means to advance the plot, and unless they give him an interesting personality, or an interesting view on Susato's situation, I'd just replace Mael talking to Susato with her waiting to tell Ryunosuke about her having to leave sometime before or after the investigation.

    2. I would shorten the case. I understand how ambitious of a story this is, but not only does it once again feel like it hurts the gameplay, but I feel some parts of the story, especially the beginning and ending, feel like they would've had more of an impact if they either condensed parts if the case like interactions between contradictions, or cut out minor parts of the case like Susato's knowledge of the hidden manuscript or Iris spilling the names on the discs that just feel like advertisements for GAA2, or the explanations for how stereoscopes work given how there are only two uses of stereoscopic images in the story that lead to the cast learning more about the case, the first of which the difference is pointed out by the game.

    Final Verdict

This is a really good case. Once again, this case suffers from some of my issues with the game's pacing and balancing, and at times it doesn't really feel like a finale case as much as it feels like a midgame/pre-finale case. But despite that, this case did manage to sometimes avoid some of my major issues with the game, resulting in some really fun and engaging gameplay segments between the more lackluster ones, a great story on its own despite the occasional returning issue with pacing, and the best cast and some of the best character appearances of the game alongside some returning average characters. So while it's on the lesser side of finale cases for me, and it's not my favorite case of the game, I found it to be far better than what most of the game has been so far.

Final Thought on The Great Ace Attorney: Adventures

Out of all the games I've replayed so far, this is probably the game of which I expected my opinion to change the least. I've had far more time with the games before this due to this game being localized only recently, so while the last games might've been affected by any biases or misrepresented memories I may have developed overtime, this should've mostly remained the same, especially since I began doing more critical reviews of cases before first playing this game. But this game might've been affected by recency bias, as every case in this game was worse than I remembered. And after replaying all the games before it, I feel that compared to the other games, this game doesn't know when to stop talking.

This game feels much slower than the last games, which isn't necessarily an issue as long as the slow pace feels beneficial, but my issue is the ways in which this game is slow. It felt like they took a quick paced game and just made the script longer, which doesn't make the story feel more complex and just makes it feel bloated, as if it's being long for the sake of being long. I feel you could make this game 20% shorter and end up with something on par, or even better. And not only do I feel this hurts the story, but I feel this also hurts the gameplay as well, as overall, I do not think this is a fun game.

There are new things I feel can work in a longer game, like the evolution of evidence examining, the summation examinations, the Dance of Deduction, and questioning witnesses not giving testimony. But most of the game either feels like a standard AA game, or these concepts aren't utilized in a creative or engaging manner.

When it's standard AA, it's boring, because the longer script only extends the time you have to wait in order to find another contradiction or look around a location, which doesn't require much effort. When it's using the new concepts, it doesn't always feel creative.

The Dances of Deduction are fun, albeit text heavy, because of the variety and how every contradiction requires looking at a different part of a person or location. But something like questioning witnesses not testifying only felt engaging two times: the first time it's introduced because it was a new concept, and in this case when you have to interrupt Ashley and Tobias's conversation because you have to do something other than wait for a cursor. The summation examinations where you take down a group of jurors felt more engaging than the ones where you take down pairs of jurors, and the segments where you get multiple pieces of evidence you have to examine are more engaging than the segments where you get one piece of evidence you have to wait to learn more about. This is the kind of gameplay I feel works with the slower pace, because it fills the gaps in the standard contradiction finding with longer, more varied portions of gameplay, and most of the time, the game doesn't recognize this and continues to feel like a standard AA game with a longer script.

And along with this, the tutorials in this game are my least favorite of the series, as they take concepts that have been in the series since the first game, both GBA and DS, and treats them like they're these new concepts never used in any video game prior, and I know this probably shouldn't be a big deal, but I'd rather the tutorials be optional, or the game just have you learn the mechanics yourself like previous games, because do we really need a minute long tutorial on how to look left and right?

But even though these issues have left a major impact on my experience, I feel I can still call this a good game. It's not really good like the games before it, and it's my least favorite game so far, but I still like this game and think it's a worthy inclusion to the series. While the gameplay overall felt lackluster, there are moments of fun to be had, and I do like the new concepts it introduces. While the story does feel unnecessarily bloated at times, at its core, it's one of the best stories AA has to offer, and is enough for me to understand why people would like this game more than me. And while there are some characters I feel don't add much to the game like Mael, the judges, and some of the jurors, a lot of these characters have become some of my favorites of the series, some of which serving roles in the story I wasn't expecting myself to enjoy as much as I did.

I do wish this game was better, because compared to the rest of the series, because of my prior opinions of this game, and because of the history behind this game and its localization, I feel this is the most disappointing game so far. But I'm not gonna pretend like there isn't good stuff here, and I feel there's enough of it here to consider this an enjoyable game. I just hope that the last game left on the list can fix these issues I have, and result in something far better.

    7.1309722222/10. Onto Resolve.

What were his and Amy's motives?

    Posted: 14 Nov 2021 06:11 PM PST

What was the motive that made the President of Zheng Fa and Amy Marsh decide to associate with each other and conceive John Marsh? This seems to be a plot hole because it never was explained why they became the parents to John Marsh, just that they meet and later he was their child.

If I didn't miss the reason and it didn't say, I would like to hear possible explanations to why they decided to make John Marsh exist.

What did JelloApocalypse nitpick in his AAI playthroughs?

    Posted: 14 Nov 2021 04:40 PM PST

I haven't played the games yet, but I'm curious to hear about what his problems are with the games and why they're pointless nitpicking rather than understandable problems. If you can't avoid spoilers, you don't have to tell me, but I'd like to get a general idea if you can. I've heard controversy of Jello in the past and how he's not very good at being objective while playing through games so I don't doubt he would be unfair with AAI.

Your Best Ace Attorney Pun Names?

    Posted: 14 Nov 2021 07:33 PM PST

I already got a couple that I think are pretty good.

Scott G. Ott (Scapegoat, possibly a defendant in a case)

Sam Randal Guye (Some Random Guy)

Notta Freeman (Not A Freeman, definitely a culprit)

Leon Tamer (Lion Tamer, possibly used for someone like a ringmaster in a circus)

Enzo Ferruccio (Enzo being in reference to Enzo Ferrari, founder of the Italian motor company, Ferrari, Ferruccio being Ferruccio Lamborghini, founder of Lamborghini, could be for a circuit racer or an Italian exotic car enthusiast)

Ferdinand Benz (Almost like Ferruccio, but German, Ferdinand is the first name for Ferdinand Porsche, founder of Porsche and Benz being named after Karl Benz, Mercades-Benz's founder, possibly another enthusiast or racer)

Question: I have just finished SoJ. Skipped DGS to play it right before DGS2. So should I play FIRST DGS on Emulator (android), original android app, with fan translation, or DGS Chronicles? If Chronicles then what language is better?
