Was Phoenix's personality in Turnabout Memories the result of growing up with Larry as a friend?

    Posted: 07 Sep 2021 06:55 PM PDT

Something I noticed a while after playing T&T was that Phoenix from the first case was really similar to Larry. Being the cheerful, simpleton who easily falls for and is used by a girl and all. Then I realized it might actually make sense as Larry was his childhood friend and probably a huge influence on his personality. After that though, Phoenix obviously matured more, probably due to having Mia as a mentor. Any thoughts?

Remarks on prosecutor van Zieks (TGAA 1 spoilers)

    Posted: 07 Sep 2021 02:10 PM PDT

Well, I've finally finished the first game of the duology. The game was beautiful, sometimes with a slow pace, but all in all a refreshing Ace Attorney experience.

One thing I liked best about the game was our Reaper of the Old Bailey. In the beginning, based on his design, I thought he was just a copy of Edgeworth. A big mistake! He's surprisingly fair, plays by the rules and his arguments are not only logical but also quite compelling. That's why I love the third case, for once we helped the murderer and the prosecutor was on the side of justice. Btw, until the end of case 5, I wasn't sure if he might have had a hand in the death of McGilded.

To constrast his behaviour with the law, we have his condescending views about nationalities/race/culture, which makes beating him a delight! As of now, he's no friend of the main cast.

My favourite scene was the short exchange between Ryunosuke and him after the final case. He shows respect to his colleague and we get some hints about his mysterious past.

What do you think about his role in the first game? It would be great if you could only write from the perspective of TGAA 1, please no spoilers :)

(GAA2-1) I finally understand the choice for her localized name...

    Posted: 07 Sep 2021 11:42 AM PDT

I couldn't get why Haori Murasame's name was changed to Rei Membami in the localization but in one of the older interviews for The Great Ace Attorney I think I found the reason for it.

Interviewer: That's why she has forget-me-nots in her concept designs, right?

Nuri: Yes, in flower language: "don't forget me." After seeing Susato in the first game, my image of her had changed into that of a bright, energetic girl, so character traits like braveness and gracefulness, traits I consider to be Yamato Nadeshiko, those traits were reflected in Haori's design.

They're forget-me-nots! That makes so much sense lol. For her name in Japanese, Haori Murasame (村雨 葉織), Haori is written with the characters for "leaf" (葉) and "weave, fabric" (織), while Murasame means "passing shower". In the artbook there is an illustration of Haori and Susato walking together in the rain.

But even before they got to Haori Murasame, a potential name for her was Tsumami Munagura. With Munagura initially being a surname to Heita Mamemomi (aka Raiten Menimemo), with munagura meaning collar and mune/muna meaning chest.

Takumi: Munagura Tsumami. Because she'd be grabbing someone (tsumamu means grab, pick in one's hand) by the collar (munagura) and throw you. Tsumami-chan.

    Eshiro: Yeah, that's a no-go.

Nuri: I desperately had to stop Mr. Takumi there. I felt something important would've been taken away from her as a friend of Susato with that name (laugh).

The Khura'in royal family got off too easy

    Posted: 07 Sep 2021 05:37 PM PDT

Gar'an was queen for 23 years and in that time a lot of damage had been done to the Khura'in legal system as well as the citizens human rights. Almost all members of the royal family had been complicit with this either of their free will or due to being blackmailed.

Gar'an obviously did the most. I don't even need to list her actions.

Inga helped Gar'an as well as gave orders for state sanctioned murder.

Those 2 were the worst and were the ones who willingly oppressed the country, and so they got the worst outcomes.

But Amara and Nahyuta weren't perfectly innocent either.

Amara supported Gar'an's regime by performing channelings on her behalf. This meant that she's the one that enabled Gar'an to do what she did.

Nahyuta was the least culpable since he was just the prosecutor. But there's a very good chance he may have knowingly sent innocent people to prison or their deaths. If he didn't, then he's fine.

Obviously the last 2 didn't have a choice since they were trying to protect Rayfa from becoming an outcast... Or did they? Nahyuta may have had a tough life due to being a criminal's son, but he was still able to work his way up to becoming the most respected prosecutor in the entire country at the mere age of 25 (dunno why he wasn't chief prosecutor and payne was). And unlike Nahyuta, Rayfa is the sole heir to the throne as only people with spiritual powers can become ruler and only members or the royal family could have spiritual powers. I assume Nahyuta doesn't have powers despite him being able to summon glowing butterflies and use his mind to control his beads, so if Rayfa gets expelled from the royal family there will be nobody next in line.

So taking all these factors into account it amazes (or rather disappoints) me how everything has gone back to normal after Gar'an is revealed to be a fraud.

God knows how many people were killed by the actions of the royal family through framing people, the DCA and the state sanctioned murders. You would expect the angry populace to imprison all of them excluding Rayfa or even change government structures to a constitutional monarchy at the very least to hold the powers of the throne in check so that the ruler can't make arbitrary laws like Gar'an did in case 5.

I understand Khura'in depends on the spiritual powers of the royal family to survive but that doesn't mean they can't have Amara do channelings in prison, turn spirit medium into an actual job where they get paid rather than sit on the throne or have the royal family do it as part of their duties in the constitutional monarchy.

Is it me, or is Dual Destinies too anime?

    Posted: 07 Sep 2021 05:15 PM PDT

Outside of the art style, Ace Attorney games aren't that anime. However, I always thought Dual Destinies contains many more anime tropes than any other game in the series. Friendship power, Apollo's characterization, the whole emotions stuff, Athena's behaviour and backstory, Turnabout Academy... What do you think?

What's the most difficult gimmick to play?

    Posted: 07 Sep 2021 05:49 PM PDT

(warning ahead of time for large text haha sorry I tend to ramble- tl;dr at end)

Just started AAI2 half an hour ago, and I can already tell this Logic Chess fuckery is going to trip me up through this whole game. It got me thinking about the gimmicks in other games (Phoenix's Magatama, Apollo's Perceive, Athena's Mood Matrix, Rayfa's Seances, Edgeworth's Logic Chess and if it counts, his Logic in general; idk if there's a gimmick in Chronicles or PLVPW, haven't played either) and my experience playing with them.

I think the Mood Matrix was my favorite, but I find Edgeworth's Logic to be the easiest to play around. (If you were penalized for mistakes with the Mood Matrix, I would have been in trouble. There were a few contradictions that just made absolutely zero sense to me.)

To answer my own question, I personally found Rayfa's Seances to be the most difficult. To me, they felt like far more complex witness cross-examinations, which I wasn't particularly excellent at deciphering in the first place. The difficulty of the other gimmicks progressively decreases as follows: Magatama, Perceive, Mood Matrix, Logic (like I mentioned, haven't played much of AAI2, but if I had to guess so far, I'd put Logic Chess behind the Magatama)

But I want to know other people's opinions, because for some reason I tend to have unpopular takes in the ace attorney community lmao

(tl;dr- I personally find Rayfa's Seances to be the most difficult, followed by the Magatama, Perceive, Mood Matrix, and Logic. Haven't played Chronicles or PLVPW, don't know if there's gimmicks in those games. Not far enough into AAI2 to gauge Logic Chess difficulty)

What anime shows and mangas would I like if I like the great ace attorney chronicles

    Posted: 07 Sep 2021 05:33 PM PDT

Well title says it all since I played through of the great ace attorney chronicles and I want more of it other than danganropa and other ace attorneys. I think Sakura wars the animation comes close but it's mech not really invesgation mystery like but it takes place almost like in the great ace attorney chronicles.
