What AA cliches/tropes would you like to NOT see in AA7?

    Posted: 10 Sep 2021 09:56 AM PDT

Over the course of 6 main series games and multiple spin-offs, a number of cliches and tropes have emerged. Not all tropes are bad, of course, but I'd like to see some of them toned down or maybe even deep-sixed like Kristoph's backstory:

    • Evil wears shoulder pads and a suit jacket. So many broad-shouldered Big Bads over the years: [spoilers for the whole series]Redd White, Manfred von Karma, Damon Gant, Quercus Alba, Bobby Fulbright, Seishiro Jigoku, Inga Khurain, Mael Stronghart, and so on.... Should character designs basically operate as spoilers?

    • Prosecutors as defendants/witnesses. It was fun the first two or three times.

    • "That incident 10 years ago...." A nice overarching plot/mystery is cool and can be very satisfying, but in recent games, it's gotten to be a bit on the nose--virtually everything and every person in the game's present is somehow related to a vast conspiracy in the past.

Any tropes you would like to retire? Am I an a-hole who will never understand the elegance of AA games? Sound off in the comments!

A simple plan fix for every culprit - Original Trilogy

    Posted: 10 Sep 2021 10:14 AM PDT

    AA1 Phoenix Wright

    Sahwit

Frank, buddy we both know you are just a victim of your circumstances. You should have just left. Nothing pointed in your direction. Just don't be a witness if nobody asked. It put the spotlight on you in the first place.

    White

Red, my cultured acquaintance. Have you thought about going on a business trip? You should have known the legal system well enough to recognize that it would have gotten you out of the situation. Instead you incriminate yourself as a witness ...

    Vasquez

Calm down and take a deep breath. It was already an accident kinda, have you thought about removing yourself from the equation?

"Hammer slipped on the stairs, what a horrible accident!"

    Von Karma

The plan was as perfect as you are Mr. Prosecutor. But have you thought about waiting just a mere week with your big crescendo? Sure it would remove the cherry on top of your revenge of getting Miles convicted for the murder of his father. But it would still have destroyed Edgeworths legacy to the same degree. Miles would be known for patricide either way.

    Gant

Damon we are both aware that you know what you were doing. Too many trails and clues mudy the water, a pain you know first hand. But have you considered the opposite? A clean kill combined with a vanished body? The suspect had already fled the interrogation room. How hard would it have been to sell the story that he escaped? Better, you could have still presented yourself as the savior of the Skyes! (self inflicted wound recommended)

    AA2 Justice for All

    Wellington

Richard you dashing fellow, just grow a brain! Keep the sim card with your contacts separate from your phone except when you are using it! And from one glasses wearer to another, keep a spare even if they are the old not which aren´t 100% right ones.

About your murder, just leave. idiots fall over railings all the time. Maybe nominate Prince for a Dawin Award.

    Morgan

I have no idea what you are drinking madam. (and seriously don´t want to ...) No matter what it is , it didn´t stop you from making a solid plan to frame Maya. This was the good part. The bad one was you putting two people that hate each other in one room WITHOUT checking that only your side is armed.

    Acro

Besides that your plot was a total overreaction, check your damn targets! No need to expose yourself, a mirror would have been enough. Or go for a higher tec solution if you want. Let us repeat it together:

Colleteral damage should be avoided especially if you are to inept to hit the right target

    Engarde

You fucking donkey! Why hire De Killer, a fucking professional if you are not a professional costumer? The plan was so good until this!

    AA3 Trials and Tribulations

    Atmey

The plan? Brilliant! The execution? Brilliant! The master mind? An Ace Planer! But please, just think before you talk ...

    Furio Tigre

First of go back to traffic school! Second faking Phoenix Wright was a good idea and apparently well executed. Good job! But maybe you should have quit last minute before the trial and get an incompetent replacement instead.

"Sorry Maggey, I can't defend you. I am ill but I have somebody to replace me"

    Godot

Yeah I know you wanted to be the hero and man you deserved your redemption. Get a nice brew of coffee and listen. The hero doesn't always need to kill the monster! Try a less than lethal option next time. Von Karma should have a tazer in his office.

    Dahlia 1

Oh no! Anyway maybe get rid of your sister by dumping her in the river. Still an almost solid plan that actually worked.

    Dahlia 2

Darling, three murders and still going! You are an actual serial killer now! But let´s ask us the following question: Does Phoenix know? Of course he fucking doesn't! He is a love drunk idiot!

Break his heart and not his neck! Gets you the pendant back (or destroyed) faster than what ever Iris was doing.

    Dahlia 3

Okay listen, only a confirmed kill is a real kill. Also consider checking whos body you are in in the first place! Maya should have had something that identified her as such. From there, maybe jump from bridge? Just go kill yourself.

Besides, remember you kinda killed Mias mom. Hey missed the target but got the second best option. Not that big of a failure after all , aren't you?

You are bestowed a strange one-time use magical power that allows you to choose one thing you want to happen in AA7 and Capcom has to implement it. What would you choose?

    Posted: 10 Sep 2021 03:37 PM PDT

The thing you choose can be as minor or major as you want or as realistic or unrealistic. There are no budget restrictions or time constraints. Whatever you choose Capcom must implement it into the game. You can only choose one thing, but depending what you choose (and how major it is) there is a chance it would cause other things in the game to be changed (however, Capcom would be the ones to decide how those changes happen). What would you choose?

    Comparing Adventures and Resolve...

    Posted: 10 Sep 2021 01:39 PM PDT

Warning: I will be spoiling both games extensively! If you haven't finished them yet, don't read this!

I've said before that I think of Chronicles as one game rather than a bundle of two different ones, basically because 1) that's how they were released to me as a Western player and that's how I played them and 2) the soundtrack doesn't change much between the two, whereas it usually does between different AA entries and 3) the stories are deeply interdependent in a way no other pair of AA stories are. That said, I had some comparisons I wanted to draw between the two, and hopefully these random thoughts will be of interest to some others here!

    Characters

I sometimes find myself wondering just how different the response to these games and these characters would be had the games been released in the West with a two-year wait time between each, because there are a surprising number of characters whose development is really back-loaded, I feel:

    • Kazuma: I'm actually legitimately confused that he topped the Adventures character popularity poll in Japan. He's great in Adventures, don't get me wrong, but I feel like all of his most interesting traits are saved for Resolve. Had Adventures been released by itself in the West, I feel like the Western AA fandom probably wouldn't give Kazuma too much thought: he works great as motivation for the main characters in Adventures, but as a character himself, all of his development and backstory is saved for game 2 (where he's in my top 3 characters).
    • Barok Van Zieks: Again, I'm legitimately confused that he was ranked #3 in the Japanese Adventures character popularity poll - ahead of Ryunosuke, Susato, and Gina - because I really do think all his more interesting character traits are present in Resolve. I understand I view Van Zieks more negatively than the majority of the people on this subreddit, but I remember when playing Adventures I felt he was the weakest AA prosecutor: I found his racism incredibly tiresome (and it just made me hate him), his integrity didn't make much of an impression on me since I think every AA prosecutor starts showing some eventually (i.e. Edgeworth in 1-3, just one case after his first appearance), and while I think his humor was good he still lacked the charm of Franziska, Godot, or even Klavier, and I'll openly admit the fact that about half of his dialogue was racist vitriol was a big reason for that. In Resolve my opinion changed significantly: the scene in his office in G2-3 legitimately does wonders for his character, showing different sides of him, and his backstory with Klint - racism arc notwithstanding - is super compelling. But in Adventures, the main thing I liked about him was really his character design, which is phenomenal and one of the best in the series. I wonder if he'd be as liked as he is now had Adventures been released alone, or even if he'd be as liked as he was in Japan after Adventures.
    • Yujin: In Adventures he didn't make much of an impression, but starting from case 1 of Resolve I started to like him a lot. His interactions with Susato during G2-1 are literally golden, and the eventual reveal about him, as well as his dynamic with Herlock?! A+, one of my favorite characters in Chronicles for sure. It's weird to think that someone of such significance in Resolve was so comparatively unimpressive in Adventures, but overall I think it works really well as a twist.
    • Herlock: He's absolutely excellent in Adventures, but I don't think I need to go into too much detail as to why he's so much deeper (and better) in Resolve.

Having Chronicles as a package kind of makes you forget how risky it is as a writing decision to backload character development when a sequel is years away, and not even totally guaranteed. Without going too much into it, I think this approach hurts one case in particular: G-4, which in retrospect is really just set up for G2-2, which is superior in every way.

Interestingly, however, there is one character who I actually think was better in Adventures than Resolve, namely, Susato. I think overall she just had a far more pronounced role, not to mention her relationship with Ryunosuke had a different dimension to it: in Adventures, Susato and Ryunosuke don't really know each other that well, they're both friends of a friend, and Susato has to go from not trusting him at all (G-2) to teaching him law, guiding him, befriending him, and eventually tearfully leaving him in G-5, a moment that has a pretty big emotional impact (especially with a two-year wait, probably) considering where their relationship started. That's without mentioning that she plays a significant role in G-5 despite not appearing in a fair chunk of it.

By contrast, in Resolve her role is much more downplayed and her arc is much less dramatic, despite her having a super strong start. G2-1 is, without exaggeration, one of my favorite tutorial cases, primarily because Susato as Ryutaro is just so entertaining, as is her dynamic with Yujin, Rei, and frankly everyone else on screen. While the core mystery is fundamentally not that complex, G2-1 is amazing for Susato's character: its opening builds on Susato's connection to Kazuma (while serving as a mini-fakeout for her father's death) and to Ryunosuke, she's actually given a semblance of an independent life outside Ryunosuke and Kazuma, not to mention she gets to put her objectively excellent legal skills to the test, all the while calling back to her good friend Ryunosuke in her animations and how she approaches things.

...but then she gets back to London, where she is great but ultimately has a more minor role, despite her father's expanded role. She never plays the type of significant role she played in G-5 in any of the more plot relevant cases, even though she's already been semi-established as a capable lawyer. Her family drama is hinted at, but not properly explored. I think a lot of this has to do with a broader issue I noticed when comparing Adventures to Resolve...

Does anyone else feel like Resolve is more rushed than Adventures?

It seems like Adventures is rapidly being considered one of the weaker AA entries, and I get it. I personally love Adventures (even enjoying it more than AAI2, which I played right before it), but I think the criticisms of it are completely warranted, and agree with the popular view that Resolve is superior. That said: I think Adventures ultimately wasn't nearly as ambitious, but managed to stick the landing with what it set out to do more. Adventures was primarily about setting the stage for Resolve, by giving us a main cast to love and hinting at the dark underbelly of London and the British legal system that comes out in Resolve. The big focus in Adventures, I feel, is developing Ryunosuke, who I think is excellent in both games: Adventures is almost entirely about Ryunosuke's relationship with the law, where he goes from someone defending himself so his friend doesn't lose an opportunity to follow his dreams, to a confident and skilled lawyer who'll even take on a member of Scotland Yard if it means defending his client. Every case successively builds Ryunosuke's character, even G-4, easily the weakest case in the package, but still important to Ryunosuke's character. Adventures is about Ryunosuke proving himself to himself, as well as to Susato, and it all works excellently, and I think it's a pretty effective hook for Resolve, despite its weaknesses (and obviously, it works better as the first half of a package that seamlessly leads into G2, rather than as a standalone game). Overall, there was little with Adventures where I said: I wish they'd expanded on that, or I wish that'd received more focus.

But I said that a lot with Resolve, which is just so much more ambitious than Adventures, dealing with an international assassination plot, having two prosecutors whose tragic backstories need to be introduced and explored, as well as turning a lot of the established characters on their head (like Gregson) while revealing the main antagonist.

As a result, a lot of little things don't get properly expanded on. Gregson's relationship with Gina is introduced, but left unexplored. Susato's family drama is introduced, but not explored. The Professor plotline, in a lot of ways, is more tell than show, with elements like the Baskerville Hound and Iris's parentage being left for nearly the very last second. Sithe is very interesting but also super underdeveloped. Barok's pre-Professor self is hinted at, and it's incredibly powerful, but not only are we deprived of a smiling sprite at the end (showing his pre-Professor self coming back), but we also never get to see him.

Overall, I honestly feel like - despite the fact that Resolve is one of the longer AA games - it could've actually used a 6th case, perhaps a flashback case with Sholmes and Mikotoba investigating the professor, where the Baskerville Hound, Klint's true identity, Sithe, and potentially even Iris's parentage and the Mikotoba family issues could be better built up to and expanded on. This suggestion is motivated not only by the fact that I love Sholmes and Mikotoba (and love them even more together), but also because I honestly think that seeing our broody prosecutor of the day before he was traumatized would actually do wonders for his character.

But ultimately, what I'm trying to say is that Resolve bites off more than it can chew, I think, and while it works more often than not, the budget cuts and rushed development are pretty palpable. It's kind of frustrating to think that, because of the reception to Adventures, we almost didn't get Resolve at all: I feel like responding to an audience disliking a game because it's only one half of a story by restricting the development of the second half of the story is counterintuitive.

All in all, though, I adore Chronicles and it's my second favorite AA game behind T&T, although after playing it I'm fine if more time is spent on a hypothetical next AA entry to prevent it feeling rushed, and I'd also be more than happy if AA never attempted to split one story between two games again.

Finally finished GAA 2, here’s my opinion

    Posted: 10 Sep 2021 05:30 PM PDT

…Well that was a roller coaster of emotions. Looks like I got everything half right In my first post.

First off I loved Susato as the protag and I wish we got more of that. And the fact that the first killer was the first victim was insane. I also liked the fact that we actually got to know Olive, Shamsphere, etc. and Yay they finally gave the Judge some character! We event got a completely different judge in the form of Storngheart which was really cool.

Speaking of Strongheart that last trial was beyond words, except I'm slightly disappointed the game got all Black/White at the end for a bit.

I genuinely think Strongheart believed he was doing the right thing getting rid of the corruption in the criminals and the Government (despite ironically taking a big part in it himself) because he talked about it a lot earlier when he had no reason to lie about it. In a way he was kind of Like Grayton from the first game except we'll never know why he hated criminals so much.

I wonder if the corruption in the government goes further beyond him, they were underpaying their military and stuff like that. Maybe the Queen threw him under the bus or something, idk we never got to see them. Guess we'll never know unless the DLC goes over that.

Yknow, I'm still thinking about Mcguilded, did he want the government secrets because he was afraid about the "professor" by chance? After all the Reaper incidents were very closely related. Maybe if we get a third game for a trilogy… Eh, I won't get my hopes up that high lol.
