    Looking Back on Turnabout Goodbyes

    Posted: 24 Aug 2021 10:21 PM PDT

We've reached the original final chapter of the first game, and what was once meant to be the end not just to the game, but to the series as a whole. From what I've seen, this case is the most popular of the first game, commonly getting good to perfect ratings with the negative reviews being few and far between. It's time to see whether or not this is a worthy conclusion to the game by looking back on Turnabout Goodbyes.

    History With This Case

Because I was less critical on my first playthrough, I only found this case to be great. Overtime, I liked this case more and more, to the extent of calling it borderline perfect and one of my favorite finale cases, albeit that was due in part to some bias against other finale cases that may or may not be justified when looking back on them.

This case will be judged by its characters, trial segments, and investigation segments. Character criticism will revolve around the character's personality, role in the story, and their actions throughout the case. Trial segment criticism will revolve around the enjoyability of the cross examinations, and quality of the story being told during that segment. Investigation segment criticism will revolve around the enjoyability of the general investigations, and quality of the story being told during that segment.

Court in now in session for the trial of Turnabout Goodbyes.

    Characters

    Phoenix Wright

Phoenix is fantastic here. Everything the past cases were setting up get amazing conclusions or continuations.

He started off needing Mia every single case, but now he can beat two cases in the same day only by remembering his advice, as if because she can't be channeled, Phoenix now has to deal with the negative effects of her death.

He was constantly nervous when a trial began in previous cases, but once Miles accuses himself of the DL-6 murder, Phoenix confidently prepares his evidence in order to get Miles the not guilty verdict he deserves.

Phoenix's history with Miles was subtly foreshadowed in previous cases, but now we learn their full history, and Phoenix has finally repaid Miles for what he did for Phoenix all the years ago.

My one complaint is that for some reason, Phoenix still hasn't learned that presenting culprit-convicting evidence to a culprit is a bad thing.

    Maya Fey

Maya is perfect here. I think I slightly like her appearance in 1-2 more since it gave her a more tragic story, but I still have no complaints.

Even though she's just now starting to feel useless, it doesn't feel out of nowhere since she's been the most useful when channeling Mia, and she's been messing stuff up here like setting off Lotta's camera and wasting a roll of film.

Her demand to keep the trial going when it looked like they lost was amazing, and although I have a problem with how this scene began, her tackling Manfred to get the bullet that saves the case was even better, culminating to her departure in the end, which is a satisfying conclusion to her story on its own, but still makes me curious as of what she's doing afterwards.

    Miles Edgeworth

Another perfect character, and Miles's best appearance so far. Having him be the defendant was fantastic, and seeing him have less confrontational conversations with Phoenix and Maya leads to a lot of character development without taking away the mysterious side of him.

Learning about his role in the class trial is as impactful as learning about Phoenix's role, and his reactions to Phoenix's actions all feel natural for him to do. Right when he's about to get a not guilty verdict, having him accuse himself of killing his father is incredibly impactful, and cross examining him is spectacular. His story feels properly completed, and it's nice to see him try to act more optimistic after getting a not guilty verdict and having 15 years of fear lifted off his shoulders.

    Dick Gumshoe

Gumshoe's fantastic here. Seeing him perform more competent investigations and be more useful is a great way to showcase how much he cares about Miles, and his moments of Miles disrespecting him are subsituted with Manfred. He still has his classic charm to keep him entertaining when Miles isn't the focus, and this is the most interesting his character has been in the whole game. I just wish he could've been in a bit more of the case since it feels like for every conversation with him, there's a conversation with someone else about him being in a meeting.

    Lotta Hart

Lotta's a pretty charming character. She's not as interesting or funny as the other characters, but she has a really likeable personality and has some good interactions with the cast. She's probably my least favorite character in the case, but considering she's still good when the last three worst characters have been on a downward slope from okay to bad, that's impressive.

    Larry Butz

Larry is perfect here. He has his charm from the first case, but the longer time gives him more opportunities to showcase more of his personality. Seeing him working a normal job adds to the worldbuilding of the investigations, and the way he's connected to the case is really fun. Him demanding to keep Miles's trial going makes for great character development and fun cross examinations, and his ties to the class trial are both compelling and funny.

    Manfred von Karma

Manfred is a fantastic character and culprit. He's intimidating likes Miles initially was, but more so because of how much control he has over the courtroom. Him going easier on Yanni than other witnesses is subtle foreshadowing to his role in the story later, and his motive makes sense given while the root of his motive, a mark on his perfect record, may seem petty on its own, him getting shot before killing Gregory is a great way to make this feel more releastic. His attempts to divert the suspicion to Miles are great, and his breakdown is tense, funny, and satisfying. My only complaint is I feel his buildup in the lobby before the first trial was lackluster.

    Your Honor

The Judge is great here. While I think he was better in 1-3 since he was a bit funnier and had less simple "Jugde" dialogue, I still really like him here, and he still has more personality than he did in 1-1 and 1-2.

    Robert Hammond

    He dead.

    Gregory Edgeworth

    He double dead.

    Yanni Yogi

A fantastic character and culprit much like Manfred. He's really charming when pretending to be the Caretaker, and when he reveals his true self, it's really impactful with everything we learned about him, from his connection to DL-6 to the negative effects of his not guilty verdict to him murdering Robert and so on. I just wish we could've had more time to interact with him.

    Marvin Grossberg

Grossberg's a good character. While he doesn't have as much charm as he did in 1-2, he's still likeable, and I like that he's the one to give us information about DL-6. This was a good appearance.

    Missile

    Best boy.

    Polly

    Best girl.

    Overall

This is a fantastic cast of characters, and the best of the game so far. There are several characters that feel evolved from their previous appearances, and the worst characters here are still good, worthy additions to the cast.

    Day 1 Investigation

    Investigation

This is a perfect investigation. Gourd Lake is a fun place to look around, the gameplay is constantly varied between talking, examining, and presenting, and having to present our badge to progress through the story is cool considering it's primarily been just a joke piece of evidence. A great beginning investigation compared to the previous cases' beginnings.

    Story

Everything here is perfect. While 1-2's first chapter had more major moments than this chapter, this one makes up for it by having three cases worth of buildup making moments like learning Miles and Phoenix once knew each other, Miles denying and later accepting Phoenix as his attorney, DL-6's connection to the case, and Gumshoe being a lot more competent and focused because this is Miles's case more powerful. It's logically sound, engaging, and Larry's appearance and Lotta's introduction are great. I have no complaints.

    Overall

This is a perfect way to begin the case. The story and gameplay are engaging, the major moments of this case are a great continuation of what was set up throughout the game, and nothing in this case feels uninteresting or unnecessary. This is a major step up from the beginning segments of previous cases.

    Day 2 Trial

    Cross Examinations

These are fantastic cross examinations. They're great tests of logic, and while Lotta's testimony being a bunch of lies seems like a bad thing and that it's unnecessary, I think it works here since she's clearly into publicity given she wanted a picture of Gourdy meaning she would want to be a witness as long as she could, and we still get useful evidence that saves the trial.

    Story

Fantastic chapter of the story. While none of the revelations felt really shocking or special as much as they felt like means to continue the case, Maya's attempts to keep the trial going, even if it causes her to get kicked out, is fantastic and a great follow up to her feeling useless when she can't channel Maya. My only complaint is in the lobby, I wish Manfred could've had either more buildup to make him feel more developed, or no buildup to make him feel more mysteriously intimidating.

    Overall

A fantastic first trial segment. Outside of Lotta's testimony having questionable importance and Manfred's buildup being lackluster, the rest of the segment is amazing.

    Day 2 Investigation

    Investigation

Another perfect investigation. It's consistently engaging, varied, and fun, and certain segments like showing Lotta the air tank feel like they were taken directly from a trial segment.

    Story

Another perfect chapter of the story. Everything from major events like learning about DL-6 to minor events like Miles paying Maya's bail give this chapter a great sense of depth, development, and make me want to keep going to discover more about what's going on.

    Overall

Much like the first investigation segment, I have no issues here. The story is constantly engaging, the investigation is constantly entertaining, and everything feels like it's doing the best it can.

    Day 3 Trial

    Cross Examinations

These are perfect cross examinations. Getting to cross examine Larry is great considering we never got the chance in 1-1, and every contradiction feels fun, logic testing, and meaningful.

    Story

Another perfect chapter of the story. The revelations made feel far more shocking and impactful than those from the last trial, Larry saving the trial is fantastic and further development to him, Phoenix, and Miles's childhood friendships, and the ending is highly intriguing encouraging me to keep going.

    Overall

This is a perfect trial segment. Much like the investigation segments, the story is engaging and shocking with tons of new major development occurring, and the gameplay is top notch, never feeling boring or unfair.

    Day 3 Investigation

    Investigation

Yet another perfect investigation. I have the same praises for this investigation as I did the last two.

    Story

Fantastic chapter of the story. So many great events like learning about Gregory's death, the class trial, looking into Yanni Yogi, Maya's self doubt, Grossberg's return, all fantastic stuff. But I gotta knock it down a point for making this the third time Phoenix it's a good idea to present the most important evidence to the culprit only for it to backfire again, which ultimately makes Maya's act of heroism a bit worse since she's compensating for a blunder Phoenix should be well aware of how to avoid.

    Overall

Same as the last two investigation segments, except now I have something to criticize.

    Day 4 Trial

    Cross Examinations

These are the best cross examinations so far. Of course, there's fun and challenging logic deductions like most other trials, and cross examining Miles is fantastic, but it doesn't stop there because we get to cross examine the goddamn parrot. The future trials will need to do a lot to top Polly.

    Story

They couldn't make this final chapter better if they tried. Everything is not only perfect, but better than any perfect chapter from before. Yanni's defeat, Manfred's defeat, Miles's reason and demand to be declared guilty, Phoenix's not needing Mia for the entire case, Maya's departure leaving me begging to see her again but still being a satisfying conclusion when viewing this as a standalone game.

Everything feels closed off in a satisfying way, and any events I want to see continue aren't a result of cliffhangers or lingering plotlines, but because of interest and love for these characters and stories.

This is how you end an Ace Attorney game.

    Overall

The best segment in the entire series, just by giving me all I could ask for and more. Any improvements I could make would be the result of incredibly minor nitpicking of irrelevant aspects of this segment. This is perfect.

    How I Would Improve

If I were to try and improve this case while retaining most of its original identity, I would make two changes.

    1. I would change Manfred's buildup in the lobby before the trial begins. The way the scene begins in the middle of a conversation makes it feel like I'm missing information about Manfred I should know considering Phoenix is learning about him at the same time. I think it would be better if the conversation actually started at the start so there can be a sense of calm before the storm, or if we got no context about Manfred and his personality and mystery build his character while meaningful information is sprinkled throughout the trial.

    2. I would make Phoenix learn his lesson about who to present vital evidence to. I accepted it the first time, and I tolerated it the second time, but this is too much considering he should know to be more cautious around Manfred, even if he's still a rookie with only three trials won. Have Manfred threaten him for his evidence since he would suspect Phoenix has something given his pursuit of Yanni and DL-6, Manfred makes Phoenix explain where he got the letter, and the scene continues.

    Final Verdict

This is the best case in the game so far. It's a borderline perfect conclusion to everything being built up over the course of the game. The story, trials, investigations, characters, and several other aspects are the best they've ever been, and the worst aspects of the case are few and far between. This case deserves the attention it gets and more.

9.25/10, it's taking 1-3's spot at the top of the list.

    • Speaking of apollo justice, Serenade is AJs best case
    • Kidnapped Turnabout is pretty good

How could you make the gameplay gimmicks of Ace Attorney more realistic? (SPOILERS : AA1-6, AAI1+2, PL v PW:AA)

    Posted: 24 Aug 2021 07:10 PM PDT

Basically, a lot of the gameplay mechanics introduced throughout the Ace Attorney series can easily be described as "magical lawyer superpowers". I call them gimmicks because the presentation and gameplay changes outside of the standard "Talk, Press and Present" mechanics. How would you rewrite them so that they aren't so magical and more realistic? It's not that I don't like them being so magical and unrealistic; if anything it's what I liked about the first 4 games - it was removed from reality for sure the moment spirit channeling was a thing. But, that's where it ends. After DD and SoJ, it felt there were too many gimmicky mechanics going off at once (Mood Matrix, Seance, Magatama and Bracelet), that it felt like these games were TOO far removed from reality.

So I figured why not take away all that makes the gimmicks magical, take out the fantasy, and ground it to reality?

So here's a list of what I consider the gameplay gimmicks of Ace Attorney:

    • Phoenix's Magatama (Psyche-Locks)
    • Apollo's Bracelet (Perceive)
    • Edgeworth's Logic
    • Edgeworth's Logic Chess
    • Athena's Mood Matrix
    • Re-visualisation
    • Khura'in's Divination Seance

So, with all that said: can any of these gimmicks become more grounded? if so, how?

Personally, Edgeworth's gimmicks can basically be described as basic logic (like the linked comic says), so I would have no idea how that could be any more grounded than it already is.

What is the BEST Case 2 in the Main Series?

    Posted: 24 Aug 2021 12:45 PM PDT

The Stolen Turnabout was great for the most part, but the final trial day was awful and soured the case to me. That and the villain are the reasons I'm voting 6-2.
