[Adventures-4 Spoilers] This whole case in a nutshell:

Barok van Zieks Worships the Devil-- err, I mean, celebrates his birthday.

Can I just say how adorable Susato is?

    Posted: 17 Aug 2021 04:31 PM PDT

    I just started TGAA2-1

Susato was always cute, but it's hilarious that her own friend now has a crush on her because of how adorable she looks while she's crossdressing. Lol I think this might be a new ship

Best looking AA game, in your opinion?

    Posted: 17 Aug 2021 08:20 PM PDT

For me, the best looking 2D game is easily Apollo Justice: it manages to make the art style more grounded and realistic than the trilogy, while keeping things colorful and maintaining the personality. The character designs are fantastic: Apollo, Klavier, and Trucy have memorable silhouettes and lovely animations (Mr. Hat, Klavier's air guitar, and Apollo's embarrassed animation being some highlights). As much as I don't like Beanix, I think his character design is excellent: it's both clearly Phoenix, but just unrecognizable enough to take you off guard, while perfectly conveying his transition to a weary, downtrodden veteran, imbuing his facial expressions with a new smugness that perfectly fits this new - albeit problematic - take on an old character. The fluidity of the animations is a welcome upgrade that doesn't sacrifice from the memorable, exaggerated pose designs core to the series' visual identity; the updated courtroom looks lovely, and is much easier on the eyes than the original, which, while it looks perfectly serviceable on the GBA and DS, translates pretty poorly to HD, being faaar too bright yellow. Kristoph also has a fantastic design, with subtle animations but an explosive breakdown that I just love.

AJ's updates to the series' visual style are subtle but impactful to the extent that it ironically actually hurts the game in case 4: in the flashback trial, Klavier and the witnesses look noticeably out of place in the trilogy courtroom and compared to Phoenix, with their more detailed designs and more muted color palette. This probably couldn't be helped, but I found it noticeably jarring at the time.

For 3D, I think the best is easily The Great Ace Attorney (unsurprisingly, another game with Kazuya Nuri handling the art direction): the character designs are fantastic, with a wonderful array of distinct costumes and silhouettes, the painted backgrounds are gorgeous, and the animations take AA's classic over-the-top animation to new heights. Brett, Judge Jigoku, Barok van Zieks, Susato (and Ryutaro), Sithe...the cool designs are just too many to name, and the game's setting helps. The witnesses and jurors are also fantastic and varied, with (minor Chronicles spoilers) Shamspeare and Ashley Graydon being definite highlights. Enoch has one of my favorite AA character designs, period: everything about how he animates is perfect. The Old Bailey is also majestic.

Ryunosuke also has a phenomenal suite of facial animations, making him one of the most expressive attorneys we have to date. Along with the camera work, TGAA sets a great standard for 3D Ace Attorney animation.

[Adventures-5 character spoilers] Here is an easter egg I found :)

    Collectors edition has arrived!

The Judge takes almost as much abuse as Nick!

    Posted: 17 Aug 2021 07:10 PM PDT

Especially from the prosecutors. Think about it! Franziska brazenly assaults him with her whip, Godot speaks to him in a disrespectful manner, and Manfred straight up tries to do the man's job for him. The audacity of these prosecutors! Yet the Judge is so browbeaten by these prosecutors that unless they're in the Payne family, he'll still side with them.

At this point, I'm beginning to think that the Judge just has it out for Nick.

TGAA 2 has an insanely good menu theme but there's no way to set it as the predetermined song.

    Posted: 17 Aug 2021 09:43 PM PDT

I thought it'd automatically change once I began the second game but it still has the 'adventures' theme.

I love that one, but Resolve's theme is SO good. Wish you could have that whenever you open the game.

    Yet Another AA3 Mistranslation...

    Posted: 17 Aug 2021 02:42 PM PDT

Have to say, though AA2 is noted to have suffered the most in terms of script quality (Miracle never happen, anyone?) I've rapidly found 3's is much worse at keeping to proper narrative accuracy. From utterly misrepresenting characters fates to utterly changing the context of some lines in a way not matching the story, AA3's ENG script appears to have been fed through an MTL engine and then crudely interpreted without eye for proper context on many lines, leading to a script which, at times, grossly misrepresents the original - and many of the mistakes weren't mended for the 2014 "re-translation" either.

Anyway, for today's demonstration of bizarre ineptitude, here's an example from the final Dahlia confrontation in 3-5, a case which appears to have been mutilated to there and back translation-wise:

At first, that woman was planning to kill me as well! ...Even though I'm her own daughter.

This line, referring to Dahlia's correspondence with Morgan, is, uh, complete nonsense. Why would Morgan "plan" to kill her daughter on death row? Why would she need to? What made her change her mind? What on earth is Dahlia even talking about, and why is it coming up when she's discussing the plan she and Morgan put together in the detention center?

Well, the reason for that is simple. The line is a complete misinterpretation of the Japanese:

    あの女の計画には、最初からアタシの死が組みこまれていた。‥‥自分のムスメだってのにね。

That woman's plan had my death built into it from the very beginning. ...Even though I'm her daughter.

Yep, as you can see, Dahlia's comment isn't her stating that Morgan was planning to kill her, she's talking about how much of a heartless act that was Morgan's choice to incorporate her own daughters execution into the plan to assassinate Maya, which, judging by the expression Dahlia makes, darkly amuses her.

I'm honestly baffled as to how on earth this one even happened honestly. The Japanese line is very clearly talking about "the plan" and "death", not "killing" (which is a kanji the games use a lot), and unless your MTL software is really bad, I can't see how on earth this misinterpretation came about. Anyone got an idea here? Because I'm genuinely really confused.
