Phoenix Wright: Trials and Tribulations - Strengths and Weaknesses

    Posted: 12 Sep 2019 01:17 PM PDT

In this current series of posts I'm doing, I will list what I believe to be a major strength, minor strength, minor weakness and major weakness of each case in each Ace Attorney game (excluding VS and DGS 2 since I haven't played them).

(note - I obviously believe most cases don't have exactly two strengths and two weaknesses, this is just a fun, brief way of reviewing each case)

    Case 3-1 (Turnabout Memories):

•Major Strength – Mia is awesome in this case, and this case is one of the main reasons why I like her so much. This case balances her nervousness and competence really well and she has well-written dialogue.

•Minor Strength – Dahlia is brilliant as a witness. Some of the comments you get by pressing her are gold.

•Minor Weakness – Phoenix being all 'lovey-dovey' wears out really fast in my opinion.

•Major Weakness – Grossberg is my least favourite co-counsel in the series – my two main issues are the haemorrhoids comments (which are gross) and the fact that he believed the defendant (his client) was guilty before the trial even started.

    Case 3-2 (The Stolen Turnabout):

•Major Strength – Ron DeLite and Luke Atmey. Ron is my favourite non-major-character defendant to this day, and Atmey has one of the greatest designs, personalities and plans of any minor culprit. They also have a great backstory together.

•Minor Strength – the actual mystery behind the Mask DeMasque heists is one of my favourite mysteries from a 'one-off case' to this day.

•Minor Weakness – Double Jeopardy wouldn't protect Luke Atmey.

•Major Weakness – as much as I love Ron, I will be the first to say that he should have gone to jail. Introducing double jeopardy and treating it as if the trial cleared Ron of all the Mask DeMasque heists (which it didn't) was a really cheap way in my opinion to stop him from going to jail.

    Case 3-3 (Recipe for Turnabout):

•Major Strength – Tigre is awesome. His plan to frame Maggey – first while dependant on the judge and prosecutor being idiots – was actually a pretty good idea.

•Minor Strength – Gumshoe got a chance to shine in this case, more so than he did in any other case in the original trilogy (I'd argue).

•Minor Weakness – the first trial day isn't the best. Goes on for too long and we only learn two or so important things.

•Major Weakness – there is NO way that anyone would've believed that the Phoenix in the original trial was the real Phoenix.

    Case 3-4 (Turnabout Beginnings):

•Major Strength – the ending is brilliant. It's unexpected, holds no punches and sets up 3-5 really well.

•Minor Strength – the Canadian Judge and Edgeworth are awesome in this case.

•Minor Weakness – given Valarie betrayed Fawles and he was confused about it and thought about it for five years, I find it hard to believe he forgot what she looked like.

•Major Weakness – I don't like Armando as a co-counsel. He rarely helps / offers advice like the others, and his dialogue with Mia isn't the best. His banter with Phoenix is far better.

Case 3-5 (Bridge to the Turnabout):

•Major Strength – Dahlia and Maya's sections in the second trial day are pure gold. It contains some of the best trial moments in the series and Dahlia and Godot definitely have my favourite final confrontations in the series.

•Minor Strength – this case ties up several plot lines and character arcs really well.

•Minor Weakness – if you run out of penalties at any point during the second trial, Iris will be found guilty – however, this shouldn't be the case. During Dahlia's section, if you fail the judge should believe Maya is the killer, and during Maya's section Iris' innocence has been proven – at one point the judge even says it can only be Maya or Godot.

•Major Weakness – there are several instances where cross-examinations are overly strict / lenient on the evidence you have to present / the statement(s) you have to present them on. This is a problem in many instances but 3-5 has quite a few of them.

Please remember, these are my opinions :)

Case Discussion & Opinions -- Case 6-4: Turnabout Storyteller

    Posted: 12 Sep 2019 04:58 PM PDT

Fuck yeah, it's time for Storyteller.

Post your first-time reactions, opinions, complaints, and general thoughts here. How did you feel about Athena's only case in Spirit of Justice? (Why the hell does she only get one filler case per game, Capcom?)

[AA 6-5] I wonder what was Phoenix thinking during this dialog.

    What cases did Yamazaki write?

    Posted: 12 Sep 2019 08:36 AM PDT

For the uninitiated, Takeshi Yamazaki was the director and lead writer for the Investigations spin-offs as well as Dual Destinies and Spirit of Justice. However, unlike Shu Takumi (who wrote all his games himself), Yamazaki wrote his games with a team of people, delegating some cases in each game to other writers.

My question is, does anyone have any idea which cases of each game he wrote? I would expect he did the final cases, since he was the main writer and those are the most important cases in each game, but besides that does anyone know what other specific cases he wrote?

[SoJ spoiler] About the last divination séance in the game

Is prosopagnosia as seen in Inga's memories? I didn't even know it was a real thing until that case, but I still don't quite get it. Do people with prosopagnosia actually see faces but can't recognize who it belongs to or is it as portrayed in the game?
