Shu Takumi on why he never wrote multiple routes or endings, "If you have the time to make extras, I’d rather pour that time into making the main game more fun."

    Posted: 22 Jul 2021 11:19 AM PDT

Found this quote recently over on Gyakuten Saiban Library.

I think this single quote really exemplifies how much love Shu Takumi pours into his works. Multiple routes are practically a given in the visual novel genre, but Takumi has never been afraid to go against the grain.

What are your thoughts on multiple routes for Ace Attorney? Personally I think one great story, or one Great Ace Attorney story is worth more than all the routes combined from any other visual novel.

    I'm hoping for a mainline AA7/AA8 duology

    Posted: 22 Jul 2021 04:43 PM PDT

I've seen a lot of discussion about AA7 predictions and wishlists regarding the characters returning and connections to different games in the series, but I haven't seen a lot about what people want from games after AA7. After considering the events around all the games in the series, I feel AA7 would work best as the first half of a duology taking place after SOJ.

These aren't my predictions for what AA7 and AA8 will be like, but they're what I hope the games will be like.

    Reason 1: History

From what I've seen in this subreddit, the most popular, high quality games in the series are endings of official or metaphorical duologies.

From an official standpoint, AAI and TGAA are duologies, and while not everyone likes them, their second entries tend to top most people's lists of the best games.

From a metaphorical standpoint, I'd argue JFA and T&T could be viewed as a duology since they were made after the producer requested PW become a trilogy due to popularity, so while the first game was developed with the idea it would be a standalone game, JFA was developed knowing T&T would come after it. And like the previous examples, while not everyone agrees, T&T tends to be more popular than PW and JFA.

And I'd say SOJ could be viewed as a standalone game, the third game in a trilogy, or the second half of two duologies, both to AJ since it gives Apollo the main focus and references aspects like Troupe Gramarye and the Lamiroir plotline, or to DD since they're both Yamazaki directed mainline 3DS games. And while not as overwhelmingly praised as T&T or the spinoffs, SOJ tends to rank just as high as those games or, at the very least, higher than AJ and/or DD.

Being part of/the second half of a duology doesn't automatically mean a game will be good, but from what I've seen and experienced, successfully telling a long story over the course of multiple entries seems to be a lot more satisfying and rewarding of an experience than successfully telling a short story, especially with all the complex topics the series tends to handle.

    Reason 2: Time

When I finished playing SOJ, I initially wanted AA7 to be an Athena Cykes game because I felt she had story potential. But I started to lose interest in that idea when I considered that DD and SOJ were 5+ year old games that I just happened to finish this year. I was viewing these games as if they came out recently and everyone remembers them as well as I do, but that wasn't true.

I think the developers are aware of the effect of the gaps of time between releases considering at the end of SOJ, they advertise AJ, a nine year old game at the time, by mentioning the Lamiroir plotline. In the same year as SOJ's release, mobile ports of AJ were released, and a year later, a 3DS port of AJ came out. From my interpretation, they assumed people wouldn't remember AJ or know about its existence, and unless this was considered only by Yamazaki, this mindset will likely carry over to AA7.

If they're gonna have AA7 be an Athena game, they would need to make sure everyone knows about Athena's story, otherwise they run the risk of the story not being satisfying or it retconning/barely acknowledging her appearances in DD and SOJ.

While there have been standalone games and trilogies of games, I think a duology would work better when considering the time between SOJ and AA7 and the events that took place in previous entries. Having it be a single game would require new players to remember events last referenced over half a decade ago to get some major degree of satisfaction, but having it begin a new trilogy would mean old players would need to wait through three games to finish the arc of a character that already had two games worth of development beforehand.

I feel an Athena duology would function like the Miles AAI duology, how AAI was a reintroduction to Miles and AAI2 built upon what was set up. For new players, they didn't need to play PW, JFA, and T&T in order to get some kind of major satisfaction from the story of the duology, and for old players, they didn't have to worry about Miles's story in the trilogy being ruined or ignored for the sake of a longer story.

These examples aren't correct for everyone since some new players might not have been satisfied with the duology and some old players might have thought Miles's story was a downgrade from/insult to the trilogy, but it's my best guess as of how people would judge an Athena duology if handled the same way.

But an Athena game isn't guaranteed to happen since Phoenix is still popular, and his original trilogy was rereleased so the time factor is less of an issue, but I still think a duology would work better in this scenario as well.

    Reason 3: Demand

This isn't meant to be a generalization of, nor an insult to people who prefer the original trilogy games to the sequel trilogy games, but from the predictions and hopes I've seen in discussions, it seems like most people don't just want a new entry that gives the focus back to Phoenix, or a new entry that returns to the style of storytelling of earlier games, but they want a fourth entry in the PW trilogy with most of the old characters and locations.

I'm not against a game that goes back to its roots, but unless they just want to bring back a couple characters and a couple locations like DD and SOJ, they'll need more than one game to do this without AA7 feeling cluttered and too fanservicy.

DD and SOJ each reintroduced two to three PW trilogy characters. DD reintroduced Pearl, Miles, and to a lesser degree Phoenix since old fans remember him from AJ. SOJ reintroduced Maya, Larry, and to a lesser degree Ema since old fans remember her from AJ. If all these characters were reintroduced in one game, I think it would feel cluttered and take away from the main story since, at the very least, one old character would need to be reintroduced each case, and considering the sequel trilogy characters like Trucy and Athena, as well as any new characters being introduced, and the cast would be too big to support itself.

If the next games are a duology, the reintroductions can be spaced out so that enough characters can be reintroduced to make it feel like an original trilogy game, but not too many at once so that they don't feel like glorified cameos or overshadow the other characters or turn the game into a cheap copy of the original games.

Of course, others have suggested that they just scrap most of the sequel trilogy and either make a soft reboot that acts as a T&T semi-sequel, or just outright make the sequel trilogy non-canon and start over. But I still think a duology directly after AA6 would work better than a new AA4.

    1. Even if the sequels aren't the most popular, there are still fans of the games, so unless both AA timelines are being supported, this decision won't be the ultimate crowdpleaser.

    2. Just because a game is a direct sequel to a good game doesn't mean it'll be a good game as well, nor a good sequel. A new AA4 could gain the same reputation as AJ, and even if it's a good game, new fans might end up preferring the original timeline to the new one.

    3. AA is praised for its continuity, as evident by the original trilogy and spinoff duologies getting praise for their flowing narratives, so rewriting the timeline makes the original trilogy feel less like a great story and more like a safespace for when the developers don't wanna take risks, escpecially since, because AA4 already exists and due to the Japanese naming system, this new game couldn't confidently call itself "AA4" without confusion or complaints.

    4. If they want to experiment with branching timelines after a specific entry, why not just make a new season of the anime, or a new movie series, or print more manga, or produce more stageshows? Those pieces of AA media are praised for their experimentation, so I'd rather they experiment with non-canon timelines rather than have the games treat making a new timeline as the best decision for the series as if the past 14 years have just been nothing but mistakes.

I think continuing after SOJ with the duology would help avoid these problems since sequel trilogy fans can keep the new characters and see them evolve, there's less worry that any mistakes AJ might've made will be repeated hurting AA's image, the series doesn't lose one of its defining aspects for the sake of security, and any new ideas presented by a timeline rewrite can be reserved for different forms of media that can exist alongside the games and give the series more content, publicity, and popularity.

I know my hopes for a duology are unlikely to happen considering the state of AA and different opinions on the matter, but this is just what I think would be best for the series and what would help it remain relevant without sacrificing the quality, imagination, or willingness to take risks that I praise each and every game for.

If you agree, disagree, or have mixed opinions on this, I'd love to start a discussion.

How do Ace Attorney Investigations 2 fans feel about Capcom localizing GAA over AAI2?

Title speaks for itself. As for my opinion, I believe DGS needed localizing more than AAI2, but I'm not against localizing AAI2.
