T&T: Has anyone actually counted how many cups of coffee Godot drinks per trial?

    Posted: 07 Nov 2020 09:40 PM PST

He says that he never drinks more than 17 cups, but I'm wondering if that matches up with the amount of times the animation plays where a new cup slides in. I'm not really expecting this to match up, but it would be hilarious attention to detail if the developers made it line up.

Who are generally the least popular characters in the franchise?

    Posted: 07 Nov 2020 06:43 PM PST

I'm guessing Sal Manella, Hotti and anyone from Big Top qualify. I'm wondering who else would qualify.

As far as major characters go, I'm gonna nominate Nahyuta as well.

The Portrayal of Disability in 6-5

    Posted: 07 Nov 2020 12:06 PM PST

I'm planning to write a detailed post about why I think the civil trial isn't as bad as it's usually considered to be (yes, I even think it's good), but as I was planning it out, I realized there was a small topic I wanted to discuss that would need a separate post: I don't think SoJ respectfully handles Armie's wheelchair. The treatment of Armie's wheelchair makes me a little uncomfortable as someone who uses a wheelchair myself, but even still, I'm not speaking for anyone else. I'm just posting to explain my perspective, and maybe someone will find it interesting.

Let me be clear up front to avoid people taking this the wrong way.

First, I love Armie as a character, and nothing I'll say here will change that. On the flip side, I also don't intend for this to be a reason for people to dislike the civil trial more. Second, I know the writers never meant any harm, and they definitely didn't intend the way I interpret Armie's wheelchair; what they wrote makes perfect sense in the context of SoJ's story and themes. At the same time, I think it's important to point out the misleading messages about disability that Armie and her wheelchair unintentionally reinforce.

With all that out of the way, I have three reasons for why I believe the game doesn't handle Armie's wheelchair respectfully. I say "wheelchair" and not "disability" because, of course, Armie isn't actually disabled, and I think that's fine. The actual problems arise in the scene where Armie reveals that she doesn't need her wheelchair:

    1.

The first thing is that, when Armie's out of her wheelchair, the game acts like she's suddenly free and independent, whereas the entire purpose of a wheelchair is to have mobility.

Armie: "But I know Papa is watching over me now, and I'd hate to disappoint him. So, from this day forth, I'm going to march forward on my own two feet!"

If you talk to someone with a mobility impairment, they'll probably say they feel trapped without their wheelchair, and they might also say that their wheelchair is a positive part of their identity. So the fact that the game uses Armie's wheelchair as a symbol of the fear that was holding her back is kind of unfortunate, if understandable. It makes sense in the context of her development, but it subliminally suggests the mistaken idea that people in wheelchairs are inherently limited and that wheelchairs are naturally undesirable.

    2.

The second thing is that Armie standing up from her wheelchair and suddenly feeling free unintentionally suggests that anyone with a disability can "overcome" that disability if they only try hard enough.

Armie: "It's about time I stand on my own two feet. After all, I no longer have Papa to coddle me!"

It leads to the damaging belief that if you're disabled and feel restricted, it's your fault for not trying hard enough. Every person with a disability has a unique experience, and not everyone can just stand up like Armie does, no matter how hard they try. It's not their fault and it's not entirely in their control.
As a result, "not being disabled anymore," which in any case is usually unrealistic, shouldn't be equivalent to character development. Armie deserves to be proud of standing up, as she is, and she should smile about it, as she does, but it's important to recognize how different this is from the experiences of most wheelchair users.

    3.

The last thing is that ambulatory wheelchair users (people who need to use a wheelchair sometimes but who are also able to walk, which is the category I'm in) are very common, so the game shouldn't treat Armie standing up as the shocking event that it does. I think it's natural for people to be a little surprised at Armie getting up, especially Dhurke, since he's lived for decades in a country where disabled people are probably ignored, or worse. However, more problematically, the game portrays Armie standing up as a dramatic, completely unexpected moment by having Apollo stutter and by using the sound effect for shock.

    Apollo: "Sh-Sh-She's… standing?!"

As far as I know, and I may be wrong, Armie never said she couldn't walk. It was only an assumption, and that's the issue. It gives the false impression that people who use a wheelchair never walk, and that people who both use a wheelchair and walk must be faking their disability, as Armie did. But while Armie had a valid reason to fake her disability, in real life, people who are even vaguely suspected of faking a disability are ridiculed, and that suspicion trivializes the difficulties of people who actually live with a disability.

In conclusion, I don't think the problem is that SoJ doesn't give people with disabilities good representation, because not every piece of media is obligated to do that. The problem is that, however much sense the writing choices make in context, the treatment of Armie's wheelchair gives them arguably bad and even misleading representation, and this is important to acknowledge while still liking Armie and the civil trial (or continuing to despise the civil trial, that's also understandable). I love Armie, and from a character perspective, I love the scene where Armie stands up, and I hope to see characters with well-handled disabilities in AA's future.

If you want to see a better example of disability representation, I think SoJ itself has one with Uendo in 6-4. I don't have personal experience to compare with here, but I'd argue that Uendo's written as a person first and someone who lives with DID second. The DID is very important to the case, but at the same time, it manages to not be shoved into the player's face (rhyme unintentional).

What do you think about all of this?

    Mask☆DeMasque's identity

For the entirety of The Stolen Turnabout I was convinced Desirée would turn out to be Mask☆DeMasque. Even after the trial had ended I thought she was gonna go "Hey btw I'm Mask☆DeMasque" and Ron was trying to take the fall for her.

That is all, just needed to get that off my chest.
