Phoenix going unnamed in the Investigations games

    Posted: 30 May 2020 01:02 PM PDT

I'm just wrapping up playing the two AAI games, and I find it really funny how every time Edgeworth alludes to Phoenix, he always just says "that man" or "an old friend," never addressing him by name. Even at the very end, they show a flashback in court of Edgeworth on one side, then swiping right to see the other bench, but it dips to white before showing anybody. Is there any particular reason why that is?

[AAI1-4 spoilers] One of my favorite things about this series is how it puts a lot of clever, thought-provoking and complex symbolism into character names. /s

So I just realized something about Klavier from Apollo Justice

    Posted: 30 May 2020 04:56 PM PDT

So I don't think anyone knows exactly how to pronounce Klavier's name but I always pronounced it Klah-veer and I'm still gonna pronounce it like that, people are saying it's Klah-fear because he's German but that's wrong, he's not actually German, he studied in German for a long time, meaning that his name most likely isn't pronounced Klah-fear, does anyone have any idea how his name is REALLY pronounced?

Did anyone else not know you could save the game by pressing start?

    Posted: 30 May 2020 11:49 AM PDT

I played the AA1 and AA2 Without knowing you could save, and it made it a lot harder. I learned about it when i pressed accidentally start on the third case of AA1 and i was wondering if anyone else played the games without knowing.

Any news on how the DGS2 translation is coming along?

I'm almost done with DGS and I really want to continue the spinoff series, but I do not know if the translation is finished or not.

    DGS Case 3: Post-Episode Thoughts

    Posted: 30 May 2020 10:48 AM PDT

OK, knocked Case 3 out of the way. Like usual, here are my collected thoughts while playing the case, in chronological order.

    • Ryu nerding out over a train station, Brits speaking Japanese -- this really is a whole new kind of Ace Attorney experience.

    • Don't think I didn't spot all of those Monty Python names in the cutscene, game.

    • Does Vortex keep birds in his office just in case he needs that extra bit of flourish? And someone to gather them all back up in case he needs them more than once in any given conversation?

    • Prosecutor Castlevania is younger than I would've guessed.

    • We can just put this whole portion of the case under the blanket title of "RACISM" and call that a good summary, I think.

    • Oh, this is going wonderfully already. Five "guilty" calls out of seven, and I've only been pressing for a few minutes.

    • Soooo many characters speaking here. Is anyone actually going to have time for a developed personality, at this rate?

    • Someday, Maya will excitedly run up to Phoenix, showing him an old photo she found, of a British omnibus with "PHOENIX WRIGHT" branded on its side.

    • Someone was holed up inside of that seat at some point, weren't they? Or is the game just bluffing me, expecting me to guess something so predictable?

    • Well, I suppose that we knew Phoenix must have inherited his love for the claim "there was a third person at the scene" from somewhere.

    • Ah, the old "smoke-bomb the courtroom" trick. Works every time, no?

    • This game's cast was just an excuse for the modelers to design as many hats as possible, wasn't it?

    • Oh, there it is. Someone hiding in the seat. At least it didn't take too long.

    • Ah, the old "smoke-bomb the Judge" trick.

    • Ah, the old "reuse this joke in as many ways as possible" trick.

    • I hope the game doesn't wait too long to let me draw attention to the fact that a bunch of stuff just incredibly conspicuously vanished from inside the trunk where Gina was hiding.

    • Van Zieks would hate the Mood Matrix.

    • Watching three to six jury reactions in a row like this is incredibly annoying. It's like having an RPG with too many party members, when every one of them needs to individually interject every twenty seconds in a cutscene.

    • And now we bring in the racial slurs. It becomes ever easier to imagine why this game never got the chance to be localized.

    • Ooh, boy. Got stuck here for a bit. That bloodstain on the rooftop hatch is ridiculously easy to miss.

    • Well, that was a damn unsatisfying Not Guilty.

    • I hope the jury's not going to be this meaningless going further into the game. I understand that the nature of Ace Attorney's gameplay makes it difficult to fit a group like them in without sabotaging the flow of the game from the player's perspective, but they really felt like they were just a waste of screentime throughout this whole trial. Didn't really seem like any of their contributions couldn't have just been handled by the Judge.

    • I am curious now, though -- it seems obvious that Megundal isn't nearly as innocent as he'd like us to believe, so is there a deeper reason Vortex was so firm about Ryu earning him an acquittal? (No spoilers, obviously.)

    • Oh, the pink-haired eight year-old is here.

    • Aaand somebody probably got incinerated. Just like the Layton crossover.

So, I liked this case overall. Its pacing was way better than either of the previous two cases, and it's obviously taken care to lay down a bunch of setup for events further down the line. For the characters:

Megundal was... entertaining, at least as far as a racist, almost-certainly-corrupt fellow like him can be.

Susato's still boring. Even more so than in the last case, actually, since she had to share screentime with a much larger group of other characters.

Van Zieks seems like he ought to have potential to be an interesting rival. He's obviously very serious about his job, but he also kept things fair throughout this case. That's always refreshing when so many rivals in the series are dishonest for their own gain.

Fairplay, Ladyfirst, and Beppo: amusing animations, not much else I can say. Having so many witnesses testify at once makes it hard for any of them to individually show much personality or come across as memorable.

Gina's obviously going to become a recurring character, so I'll look forward to seeing more from her. I was glad that her initial running gag of firing smoke grenades at people stopped at only three instances. That would've gotten old really fast.
