Breakdown of Ace Attorney series questionnaire

    Posted: 29 May 2020 03:24 PM PDT

So, I posted a short questionnaire to this sub two days ago, just to find out how everyone thinks about the series nowadays. I thought I'd now break down the responses for you all, they make very interesting reading. There were a total of 101 responses

NB: If you want to read the full raw data sheets, you can download the pdfs here. Not exactly pretty documents, but should be easy to follow along.

Here are the average scores for each individual game, ranked from lowest score to highest.

    11) Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth (3.4353)
    10) Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies (3.6374)
    9) Professor Layton vs Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney (3.74)
    8) Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney (3.7579)
    7) Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney: Spirit of Justice (3.9125)
    6) Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney: Justice for All (3.9126)
    5) Dai Gyakuten Saiban (4.2188)
    4) Dai Gyakuten Saiban 2 (4.2727)
    3) Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney (4.2736)
    2) Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth: Prosecutor's Path (4.3433)
    1) Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney: Trials and Tribulations (4.56)

Here is the percentage of respondents who voted an individual game as their favourite, ranked from lowest to highest.

    11) PLvsAA (1%)
    11) AAI (1%)
    9) DGS2 (4.1%)
    9) AA5 (4.1%)
    7) AA4 (6.1%)
    7) AA2 (6.1%)
    5) DGS (7.1%)
    5) AA6 (7.1%)
    3) AA1 (16.3%)
    2) AAI2 (17.3%)
    1) AA3 (29.6%)

Here is the percentage of respondents who voted an individual game as their least favourite, ranked from highest to lowest.

    1) AA2 (21.2%)
    1) AA4 (21.2%)
    3) AA5 (16.5%)
    4) AAI (15.3%)
    5) AAI2 (5.9%)
    5) PLvsAA (5.9%)
    7) AA6 (4.7%)
    7) AA1 (4.7%)
    9) AA3 (2.4%)
    10) DGS (1.2%)
    10) DGS2 (1.2%)

Conclusions to be drawn here? Most everyone likes AA3 the most, most people like AAI the least, but none of the games are overall bad or awful.

Here's some spots of data regarding how people feel about the future of the series.

In terms of the game that people want: It seems most people want a continuation of the main series the most, with returning characters. That means that the sub wants to see Phoenix, Athena, and possibly Apollo again in the next game, which is to be expected. There is also a high demand for a DGS localisation, and also significant portion of people want a new cast of characters. Interesting to see what the reaction will be when the next AA game is announced.

A majority of people said that the game they want least is a port to modern consoles, and this is very understandable. (especially given the less-than-positive reaction to the unmissable TGS show 2 years ago...) However, a large portion of people specifically do not want a brand new cast to be introduced, which is interesting...

Most people expect the next game to either be a brand new mainline title with returning characters OR a port to modern consoles. Funnily enough, an overwhelming majority least expect a DGS localisation, so... a sub full of realists we have here.

Finally, in terms of desires for platforms, most people want the next mainline game on the Nintendo Switch. This is about what I expected, as they announced 3 years ago that the next Ace Attorney game would come to switch, so everyone's had that expectation since then. (Of course that turned out to be the trilogy, but still...) As well as this, there is some support for PC, and a large chunk of people also want it to come to 3DS. To those people I can only say... sorry.

Next, I asked people to give their thoughts on other elements that relate to the series. Here are a few highlights.

On the Ace Attorney series as a whole:
-"I love it so so much. This franchise has helped me through tough times and I love it more than any other franchise on this Earth!"
-"The Godfather of Murder Mystery Games"
-"It's the peak of mystery fiction in general. It has its ups and downs, but its high points are unmatched."

    On the Ace Attorney anime:
-"It was a decent adaptation of the series- season 2 was definitely better- but I felt that the anime-only episodes were the best. I also wish it had had better animation and a wider appeal, so people could get into the series through the anime."
-"I watched the first season and wasn't a fan. Lacking visuals kinda ruined it for me. And it feels like a less enjoyable way to enjoy the story."
    -"where's RftA"

    On Capcom:
    -"cowards. make narumitsu canon"
-"They make great games but man I wish the would release something that's not the original trilogy again"
-"They've been on a very impressive upswing in the last few years, dramatically improving my overall opinion of them."
-"Generally has quality games. A bit fan-service-y without understanding what the fans actually want, at least in the Ace Attorney department."

    On the Professor Layton series:
-"Layton's a good franchise, but unfortunately Layton isn't as interesting of a protagonist as Phoenix is in my opinion."
-"I used to be super into it as a kid. I own all the games on cartridge and still play them now and then, but much less frequently as the characters and universe don't hold my attention enough to be worth replaying too much."
-"Near and dear to my heart- my history with this franchise goes beyond my history with Ace Attorney. It's another series which hasn't produced a bad game yet."

    On the Danganronpa series:
-"I really love danganronpa. It has compelling characters, especially if you go in the free time events, witty dialogue, coming alot from Monokuma. The biggest most tragic event in human history is a bit much, but... (omitted for spoilers)"
-"Go swallow thirty pounds of rotting garbage and it'll be a better experience"
-"Terrific. The series provides plenty of great moments, and I am still toiling internally over which of Danganronpa and Ace Attorney is the better franchise on the whole."

    On Ghost Trick:
-"It's a great game! Good soundtrack, good characters, excellent plot, and unique gameplay. Timed puzzles aren't usually my thing but I found myself liking how Ghost Trick did it."
-"It definitely feels like a Shu Takumi game, which is obviously a plus. I can see a lot of influences from Ace Attorney so far, and it's been good at building up the mystery behind Sissel's death and the other events of the night. Can't comment on anything else, haven't finished it yet."
-"Masterpiece. The puzzle gameplay is incredibly unique, the story is intriguing and really well setup, and it's art style is amazing."

    Other general comments:
-"fun fact if we all arrange the 5 volumes of the aa manga in a pentagram and light nine candles at midnight on September 21st we can try to summon aa7 for tgs 2020"
-"Hotel Dusk is really good. in fact, while you're bored due to the AA hiatus try to branch out and play all these obscure games in the already obscure genre of VNs."
-"I think it's a testament to the Ace Attorney franchise's quality when we're clamouring for more so long after the original game's release, a dozen games later."

Finally, I did a little bit of optional demographic feedback. It wasn't very exciting but I'll still post a little here. As was to be expected, the vast majority of people live in either Europe, Oceania or North America, as this is an English-speaking sub. Most people who took the survey were male, 75%, and female represents 15%. Interestingly, there is a high proportion of people identifying as transgender who took the survey, around 7.5%. (Apologies if a preferred gender label was not present on the quiz) And then finally, most people are aged between 0-18 and 18-25. Shout out to the 2x 65+ year olds who took the survey.

And there you go, there's my full breakdown of the results of the survey. Some food for thought, and it's always fascinating to know how the sub feels about different games and aspects of the series. Feel free to draw your own conclusions on everything here.

I feel like the survey was limited by sample size, however. I wonder if it might be a good idea for a larger, official sub survey at some point in the future. If anyone knows how this could come about, I'd love to see it happen.

Thanks everyone for taking part, and I hope you enjoy all the information I've compiled.

    Every Testimony in a Nutshell

    Posted: 29 May 2020 12:16 PM PDT

    • "You see, here's what really happened!"
    • says what you just proved in the previous testimony
    • excuse for doing said thing
    • [insert contradiction here]
    • "you see, nothing weird happened!"

Note: sometimes you need to press the excuse statement to get the contradiction statement

Just a funny pattern I've picked up on while replaying the games lol

In your opinion, what’s the best bluff any attorney pulled?

    Posted: 29 May 2020 08:14 AM PDT

considering the whole gimmick around phoenix being super good at bluffing, do you think any other attorneys did it better, or was phoenix genuinely just good at it? i genuinely can't remember other instances of it happening.

Unpopular opinion: Nahyuta Sahdmadhi is a far better character than Justine Courtney

    Posted: 29 May 2020 02:28 PM PDT

Tl;dr Nahyuta talking about his God makes sense for his character, while Justine just does it because they need a new gimmick.

While I usually agree with people when they say Nahyuta isn't anywhere close to the best prosecutor in the series, I still feel he was a really good character.

I loved his story of how he had to abandon his dream of bringing down the corruption in his country so he forcefully changed himself, all to protect Rayfa. He was waiting for Dhurke to fix this nightmare for him, but even his friends just assumed he's one of them now. When he realized help wasn't coming, he resigned to his role in life and took his bitterness out on the defense attorneys he was supposed to bring back.

Courtney's story is she wanted to help her friend investigate her boyfriends murder and she suspected Blaise Debeste so she joined the PIC and then her cousin randomly died so she adopted her son, who was the "source of strength" in her life while she was trying to find dirt on Blaise.

The reason I'm comparing these two is because some people call Nahyuta a poor man's Courtney. The only connection these two have is the fact that both of them talk about higher power frequently, with Nahyuta talking about the Holy Mother and Courtney talking about the Goddess of Law.

The thing is, Nahyuta talking about the Holy Mother makes sense, he was raised in Khura'in where spirituality is valued a lot and he works under the Ga'ran regime, who are very orthodox religious people, as evidenced by the fact that you will be punished for just interpreting the face of the holy mother.

Why does Courtney keep talking about the Goddess of Law? I get worshipping her as a judge, but why would she keep throwing out dialogues like "May the Goddess of Law grant you your wishes!" If you liked this then great but I just saw this as annoying, when it clearly wasn't meant to be. Also im sure the goddess of law doesn't condone spying on people and digging up dirt on people.

Please tell me what you guys liked about Courtney I can't think of a single positive.

Just finished AAI2, would love to hear other people's thoughts on this character...

    Posted: 29 May 2020 10:49 AM PDT

I had really complicated feelings about Judge Courtney, and I felt like it took me a really long time to stop being irritated with her character.

I was able to feel sympathy for her when John got kidnapped, and I felt like drawing that information out from her during logic chess was effective and interesting. But in every other case of the game, I was extremely frustrated with her. I know that--as the mainline games--there has to be a sort of antagonist making you explain your logic and show evidence, but with Courtney it felt almost distractingly unrealistic at times, how much she was pushing you. Threatening to take a prosecutor's badge to get him to stop investigating something, even though it's clear that she's got the wrong perpetrator seems to run counter to her whole "uphold the law" schtick, but she does it on more than one occasion. Like, when she's accusing Kay, the girl has AMNESIA. You're not at least going to look into that situation before you arrest a teenager? Maybe she's lying, maybe she needs medical attention, but either way it's not my problem, take her away, boys! What????

And then there's a throwaway line that she was investigating Blaise, but it doesn't make clear if she's been looking into him the whole game and was just playing along with his instructions, or if she just started to suspect him after Jill's murder. I guess her overall behavior towards Edgeworth just never really made logical sense to me, and so I was annoyed every time I had to interact with her.

So imagine my surprise to find that she's pretty popular within the fandom. Did I miss some critical line of dialogue or something? Am I being too harsh? What are your thoughts on Justine Courtney?

Why do people dislike Investigations 1-3/AAI1-3 (The Kidnapped Turnabout) so much?

    Posted: 29 May 2020 02:35 AM PDT

People really don't like it. Hear it all the time on this sub. According to a recent tier list analysis, it was one of three cases in the series to hit the bottom tier.

Personally, I like the case. Finished my replay of it early today, and I would put it below Airlines but equal to Visitor (and I like Visitor). I think the premise of a kidnapping is cool, as is how the kidnapping is ultimately staged, and I think the victim is a good one because of his secrets. Some interesting plot threads are left for later. I like the cast; Shi-Long Lang is cool as it's nice to have a rival (he is a bit of a dick tho), I like the mysterious assistant trope and Shi-nah, and I find Lauren a really sweet character with her appearance and dialogue. I like Lance being a wolf in sheep's clothing, and Ernest pulls off the corrupt rich guy trope good because of his history with Edgeworth. Plus, you have more badgers, which is nice.

Not sure how to put it into words but I really liked seeing that one actual-employee Proto Badger come out of nowhere, such a helpful guy.

The only major criticism I have is how hilariously unrealistic Little Thief is. But that can be easily put aside by how this is a series chalk full of unrealistic things. Another thing that's more of a personal observation than a criticism is how the mystery is a little difficult to wrap your head around given all the locations, badger costumes, etc.. Visitor was better in that regard for being more straightforward.

I honestly just don't see it. Why are people so disappointed in this case?
