| My thoughts on "Turnabout Samurai" after having finished DGS2 (PW:AA case 3) Posted: 06 Dec 2021 05:21 PM PST A Brief IntroductionI'll get this opinion out of the way, I think for me personally, that this is the only 3rd case in the trilogy that bypasses the 3rd case curse. While being a filler case, it manages to be fun and silly while having a really interesting killer. Without getting too ahead of myself, this case still has it's BIG flaws but through most of my playthroughs, I found this one to be really enjoyable. Case OverviewI just want to start off saying that I love the Steel Samurai gag, it's really stupid and it makes it better that you end up realizing that Edgeworth is SUPER big on the Steel Samurai. I can't help but smile every time I hear the theme come in the background. But that's me going off on a tangent. We get to see a clip of the FAMOUS STEEL SAMURAI and it turns out, the star of Steel Samurai is arrested. For such an obviously powerful main cast role, you'd expect someone like Arnold Schwarzenegger right? WRONG, he's this meek tame guy that's just really sweet and charming. Jack Hammer (who also has the single stupidest pun that I've laughed at in a while), is also given a lot of character for being a victim in a case. We also get to see multiple characters that shouldn't ever been in the game but they're here now and I guess we have to live with them HAHA (kill me). The investigations are what kind of bog the case down for me though, they feel a lot more lengthy than it should (especially day 1 where you have to prance around Oldbag and The epitome of WHY). A lot of the first day is spent gathering a good amount of information but nothing too OUT there. We also get to know the infamous Stepladder vs Ladder argument, will it ever be solved? Probably not, but the age old question still remains. It's like the question "What is the meaning of life?" but more complex. We get into the trials the next day, and it goes relatively undisturbed and is pretty calm for the first case. We get to know that the person in the suit COULD be Will powers, and we're also introduced to Cody Hackins. There's no truly huge revelations in this case, only a couple of small ones that do add up in the end. The rest of the day spent investigation is still really fun, we get to spend time with Maya and Gumshoe and it helps make them more likeable. Cody Hackins is also really fun as a witness and as a character to interact with, and there's no real complaints from me in this section. Day 3 is where things start really heating up, we get to know about what Cody saw, about the time before Hammer's death, Phoenix standing up and saying that NOBODY SHOULD LIE IN COURT (when literally everyone he's cross examined has lied at some point). We also get to have the first BIG plot twist in the series, where it's revealed that the Steel Samurai lost. A lot of bickering goes back and forth between Edgeworth and Wright and at the end, we get 1 MORE DAY WHY REALLY DO WE NEED THAT LONG. This is the most common complaint with the case, is that it just takes too long to complete and overstays it's welcome. This case is really simple and easy to the core, which isn't necessarily a bad thing in any means, it's just that this feels like it takes too long to get anywhere at times. The 4th Investigation does lead a lot of interesting things pointing to the real killer, and we also get to have some more lines between Maya and Phoenix that really start to sell their relationship. But the real challenge starts in the trial, which is possibly the best trial segment in the case. We get to confront Dee Vasquez, the real killer and the one who has had the upper hand on this situation. Dee Vasquez is the first REAL challenge that you have to topple in the series, a smart woman who carefully works her way around your allegations. We also get to see some really great bickering between Miles and Phoenix once again "YEAH! MR. WRIGHT!..... Oops." This is also the first case where we get to see Miles's growth as a character, even though he was about to win, he still held out and helped you achieve the truth. Giving you a well earned victory. OpinionsThis case is much more fun than I'd remember, having stupid silly moments mixed with some really fun chitchat between Edgeworth and Wright. The main downfall is the cast and the pacing issues, with the pacing really starting to slog by the end. But I can't say that I didn't enjoy a lot of the case for what it was, even though the mystery was really simple. This case also really sets the standards for an Ace attorney case, bringing a lot of stupid moments mixed with a decent mystery. Highlights
