Which case from the mainline series (and Investigations Duology) had the most fun Investigation segment for you?

    Posted: 11 Nov 2021 01:25 PM PST

I always see AA fans treating Investigation segments as something you have to put up with before you get to the actual trial

and now im wondering if it's true for all cases or there are exceptions to the rule

Looking Back on The Adventure of the Clouded Kokoro

    Posted: 11 Nov 2021 06:13 PM PST

Love and marriage, love and marriage, go together like a horse and carriage. This I tell ya, brother, you can't have one without the other. From what I've seen, the opinions of this case mostly range from alright to the worst case of the duology. Let's check out what London's like over halfway into the game by looking back on The Adventure of the Clouded Kokoro.

    History With This Case

When I first played this case, I thought it was alright, being fun and interesting at its core, but a somewhat uncomfortable experience due to how it represented romantic relationships.

This case will be judged by its characters, trial segment, investigation segments, and ??? segment. Character criticism will revolve around the character's personality, role in the story, and their actions throughout the case. Trial segment criticism will revolve around the enjoyability of the cross examinations, and quality of the story being told during that segment. Investigation segment criticism will revolve around the enjoyability of the general investigations, and quality of the story being told during that segment. ??? segment criticism will revolve around the enjoyability of the ???, and quality of the story being told during that segment.

Court in now in session for the trial of The Adventure of the Clouded Kokoro.

    Characters

    Ryunosuke Naruhodo

Ryunosuke's fantastic. While his personality still isn't as strong as in G-1, I like how he continues to learn about aspects of London like the lamplights and Scotland Yard. I really like how him defending Soseki parallels his situation in G-2, and I also like how he finally learns what it's like to be a lawyer in London and begin to do what Kazuma would've wanted.

    Susato Mikotoba

Susato's okay. Her personality still doesn't work for me, and while I like that she's continuing to be a useful assistant, the abusive relationship theme of this case made the jokes about her Susato Takedown more annoying than in G-2.

    Mael Stronghart

Mael's okay. Once again, he feels like he's just here to begin the plot and nothing else.

    Tobias Gregson

Tobias is good. I wasn't that interested in his personality, but it was cool to learn about his connection to Herlock and Iris.

    Soseki Natsume

Soseki's good. While his personality wasn't that interesting, and his alliteration gimmick was kind of annoying, it was cool to see a Japanese person who spent a long time in London and how his role in the story parallels Ryunosuke in G-2.

    Iris Wilson

Iris is good. She didn't offer much to the case, but I like how she parallels Herlock's mannerisms and Dance of Deduction.

    Joan Garrideb

Joan's bad. I liked that she was the culprit and a juror at the same time, but the crime being an accident doesn't have the same impact as in G-2, and I don't like how the case portrays her abusing John as a joke and try and make it an emotional moment by the end of the case. She's my least favorite character in this case.

    John Garrideb

John's okay. Outside of being the victim of Joan's abuse, he wasn't that interesting of a character to me.

    Herlock Sholmes

Herlock's perfect. Once again, he's the funnest character in this case with how he balances his seriousness and looniness. On top of that, I like his explanation for what he chooses to believe in and that it doesn't depend on blind trust and distrust of defendant or suspects, but on how much he's willing to believe in himself and what he determined to be the truth, much like Kazuma said in G-1, and it's cool that he lets Ryunosuke and Susato stay with him and turn his attic into their office when they're nearing losing their home. He's my favorite character in this case.

    Purple Guy and Yellow Guy

    Why were you here?

    Barok van Zieks

Barok's great. While he doesn't have the same presence and impact on the case as the last case, his mannerisms and subdued racism are still enjoyable and interesting.

    My Lord

The Judge is okay. Again, nothing bad, but nothing good either.

    Bruce Fairplay

Bruce is okay. Despite him being enjoyable last case, he doesn't offer much outside of him being the foreman.

    Juror No. 2 (Belle Palette)

Juror No. 2's okay I wasn't interested in her personality, and she was just here to do her job.

    Juror No. 3 (Blake Brown)

Juror No. 3's okay I wasn't interested in his personality, and he was just here to do his job.

    Juror No. 5 (Lenny Gahlredy)

Juror No. 5's great. I wasn't interested in his personality, but I really like how he contributed to the case both by being on work when the crime happened and with his marital issues being parallel to solving Joan's role in the case.

    Juror No. 6 (Harold Mann)

Juror No. 6 is perfect. This is the first juror who I feel has a really likeable personality, with him being really funny and charming when not hearing Ryunosuke, arguing about his clothes and changing his mind, and talking about his birthday, and much like Lenny, I like that he adds to the case both by being near the crime scene while looking similar to the victim, and with his birthday cake fire being parallel to Joan's housefire.

    Olive Green

    She comatosed.

    Roly Beate

Roly's meh. I wasn't interested in his personality or motive for moving the victim's body, and his affection for Patricia was just cringey to watch.

    Patricia Beate

Patricia's bad. She's not unbearably annoying, but her affection for Roly was also cringey, and I didn't like seeing her controlling and pulling around Roly's borderline unconscious body.

    Overall

This is an alright cast. This case has the most lackluster characters so far, but there still a good amount of enjoyable characters, and the returning characters are still mostly worthwhile inclusions.

    Investigation, Part 1

    Investigation

This is a bad investigation. I may have been a bit too harsh on the trials in the last segment just because I felt most of the time there was little to do compared to how I felt about previous trials, but for this investigation, there's literally nothing. It's just walking and talking for the entire section with the only mandatory investigating being selecting Tobias after talking with Mael.

    Story

This is an okay first chapter. The entire thing is basically just introductions to the new cast or repeating what we know about the last case, but there was nothing outright bad here.

    Overall

This is a meh first segment. Honestly, I feel it probably would've been beneficial if the game just introduced "story" segments alongside the investigation and trial segments entirely for plot purposes, so that at least the lack of actual investigating feels more justified.

    Investigation, Part 2

    Investigation

This is an okay investigation. I still wish more of the segment was devoted to investigating, but I liked checking out Soseki's home, and the Dance of Deduction has been the most engaging part of the case so far.

    Story

This is a great chapter. While we don't learn much about the case itself, and the scene before last meeting Soseki was unnecessary, learning about John and Joan's relationship was cool, and I like how Ryunosuke and Herlock connect their experiences in G-2 with Soseki and Ryunosuke in the present.

    Overall

This is an alright investigation segment. I still feel it suffers a bit from some of my issues with the last cases, but it was an overall enjoyable experience.

    Trial, Part 1

    Cross Examinations + Summation Examination

This is meh gameplay. While I think the summation examination was better than the first one, the segment itself still isn't that engaging due the gaps in gameplay and slower feeling pace.

    Story

This is a meh chapter. None of the revelations outside of the the different bookstore and John and Joan's connection to the case felt too impactful, it once again feels like there's a bit too much time devoted to minor aspects of the story, and I feel the ending was anticlimactic considering a summation examination hasn't been that big of a deal since the first time it happened.

    Overall

This is a meh trial segment. Once again, I feel the game does a weak job at both balancing the story to gameplay, and at deciding how much time should be devoted to what aspects of the story.

    Trial, Part 2/Investigation, Part 3

    Cross Examinations + Summation Examination

This is great gameplay. While still not consistently engaging, and I feel they could've toned down the reliance on pressing Roly and Patricia's statements, this is beginning to match the fun and engagement of cases before this game, and this is my favorite summation examination so far, as it involves convincing four people at once rather than two pairs of people.

    Story

This is a good final chapter. The crime being an accident doesn't have the same impact as in G-2, and Roly's motive and John and Joan's reconciliation didn't hit me that hard, but the revelations about the victim's location and the knife are great, and I like Herlock inviting Ryunosuke and Susato to live with him and Iris.

    Overall

This is a really good final segment. While still not perfect, this segment felt like an improvement from the rest of the case.

    How I Would Improve

If I were to try and improve this case while retaining most of its original identity, I would make two changes.

    1. I would tone down the abuse jokes. I don't know what this case's obsession is with women hurting men, but it's tiring. Not only do four man/woman pairs (Ryu/Susato, John/Joan, Roly/Patricia, Lenny/Offscreen wife) involve some kind of joke where the woman abuses the man, but they try to make it an emotional moment between John and Joan by the end of the case which doesn't land.

    2. I would shorten the investigation segments. Too much of the investigations feels like it's devoted to introducing new stuff rather than developing old stuff. The first investigation is devoted exclusively to formally introducing Tobias, Iris, and Soseki, and Soseki's really the only one that matters to the case, with Tobias being a standard detective whose development with Herlock and Iris doesn't matter to this case, and Iris only appearing in the beginning and ending, and the second investigation has some people arguing outside for no reason. If they're not gonna devote more time to actually learning about the case, I'd want them to shorten and combine both segments so less time is devoted to storypoints unimportant to the case at hand, and more time is devoted to fun gameplay and important development of the case and Soseki.

    Final Verdict

This is an okay case. It feels like everytime the game fixes or improves one issue, it creates or worsens another. While the trials felt more fun and engaging than the last case, the first investigation segment gave me nothing to do. While Ryunosuke, Herlock, and the jury ranged from equal to better quality from their last appearances, some returning characters remained equally or more standard, and some new characters were outright unlikeable. While some themes it developed from the last case like Ryunosuke's views as a foreigner and a lawyer are continually developed, this case introduces things that any other game would've introduced by the second or third case. It's not my least favorite case in the series, but it's coming close. These cases feel like they're getting worse overtime, and at this point, I just hope this doesn't apply to the last case.

    6.3611111111/10, it's going between 3-3 and 2-1.

Franziska for Queen of /v/ update!

    Posted: 11 Nov 2021 07:30 PM PST

Queen of /v/ is an annual competition hosted by /v/, the 4chan board for Video Games, which picks 128 female characters from video games and puts them in a tournament for anons to decide who will be the official queen (and later king) of /v/.

Franziska has beaten the first three rounds, beating Susy from Left 4 Dead, Mariana from Splatoon, and the Sorceress from whatever series she's from.

Now she is going up against Fio from Metal Slug (whatever that is)

If you want to vote, you can do so here!

The first question is to gatekeep non 4channers, the answer is 'my little pony' Becuase bronies originated on 4chan and had to be contained to their own board to stop them from hijaking every other board.

    Make Franziska proud!

    Naruhodo family crest: Update

    Posted: 11 Nov 2021 10:29 AM PST

In this post I dicussed what symbol can be seen as the family crest (which on Japanese is called kamon) of Naruhodos. And we assumed that it was a flower, which is shown on the Ryuno's haori on the DGS promotion art and this subreddit's banner. I decided to dig a bit further, and, surprisingly, this flower isn't a sunflower. It's actually a chrysanthemum.

On this site I found the exact same symbol called "Juni Kiku" - or Twelve Petals Chrysanthemum. It does't firmly imply anything, but there's a little parallel, which is hidden in DGS2 trailers. In the video we see pictures of all of the main cast with specific flower patterns: Susato obviously has cherry blossom, Iris has irises... and Ryunosuke has white chrysanthemums. I reckon it was Kazuya Nuri, DGS art director, who took part in this trailer making, and considering his immence attention to the details, it may be not a coincidence.

Chrysanthemums are very popular flowers in Japan (there is even a national holiday dedicated to them, also they are on the pasport covers). These flowers have different meaninds, like longevity, purity or the truth. But here's a thing - chrysanthemums are actually a long-lasting symbol of Japanese imperial family, and I doubt that Ryuno is closely related to them. Some sites say that the imperial family could award this kamon to people who had shown excellence in service for them. So, who knows, maybe Ryunosuke's ancestors served to emperors in some way?

This fact can provide some interesting background. However, after WW2 the kiku kamon was reserved only to the imperial household, so Phoenix (or rather his Japanese alter-ego Ryuichi) hasn't a right to use it anymore

Franziska Von Karma is on the ballot for Queen of /v/!

    Posted: 11 Nov 2021 11:32 AM PST

Queen of /v/ is an annual competition hosted by /v/, the video games board on 4chan. Anons on the site nominate female video game characters and they vote tournament style them all off until they have their queen.

Maya Fey was on the list but lost to a pair of two guns called Ebony and Ivory.

And now Franzy is Ace Attorney's only representative for Queen, and she needs all the help she can get since she's going against the Sorceress, a coombait character with ridiculously large tits.

(edit voting is now closed.) I will tell you if Franzy won.

Vote here and show Franziska Von Karma your support!

EDIT AGAIN SHE WON, SHE WON, I REPEAT. Not the whole thing mind you, just this one contest against the sorceress.

Sudden realization about AAI2 main villain

    Posted: 11 Nov 2021 06:10 AM PST

Don't know exactly how many crimes Simon Keyes had committed, but as for his biggest one - murder of Huang's double... well, any decent lawyer will claim that it was a murder in self-defense, because... it was actually a murder in self-defense! Fake president fired a gun in Simon first and only after that Simon crushed him to death. So yeah, at least in case of murder he will probably get a very lenient punishment.

Or maybe I don't understand American laws so feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.
