Currently trying to watch the series on Crunchyroll, but the site is pretty terrible and the ads constantly freeze the video.

I will go straight to the point: I know the true identity of the killer (and his real name) of The Adventure of the Unspeakable Story and I know that the true culprit of The Adventure of the Runaway Room is revealed there. Can I still enjoy this case?

Has anyone read the newspapers in the Great Ace Attorney games?

    Posted: 16 Oct 2021 04:22 PM PDT

Not the main focal articles but the ones that are on the side of the paper. They contain a variety of articles of different news events. Many of them are related to actual news of the Victorian Era. One article is about The Great Stink, a couple are related to Cholera outbreaks.

I wonder if all the news articles listed are based on actual events. It's pure fluff but it adds some nice details to the setting of the games.

Looking Back on The Monstrous Turnabout

    Posted: 16 Oct 2021 07:48 PM PDT

This is the 30th case, therefore it is legally iconic. From what I've seen, while this case has its fans, it's the least popular case in the game, and an occasional selection for the worst case in the series. Let's see how monstrous of a case this is by looking back on The Monstrous Turnabout.

    History With This Case

From my most recent memory, I thought this was an okay case, having some noteworthy good and bad aspects, but most of them averaging out or not leaving a major impact on me.

This case will be judged by its characters, trial segments, and investigation segments. Character criticism will revolve around the character's personality, role in the story, and their actions throughout the case. Trial segment criticism will revolve around the enjoyability of the cross examinations, and quality of the story being told during that segment. Investigation segment criticism will revolve around the enjoyability of the general investigations, and quality of the story being told during that segment.

Court in now in session for the trial of The Monstrous Turnabout.

    Characters

    Apollo Justice

Apollo's great. While his personality isn't as strong as it was in the early cases of AJ, I still liked how he worked off of characters like Athena and Simon, and getting to see him before the bandages is cool.

    Trucy Wright

Trucy's okay. Her first appearance at the Wright Anything Agency felt promising, but she became a mostly passive character afterwards, just filling the background.

    Jinxie Tenma

Jinxie's good. I didn't find her personality and role in the story to be that interesting, but I like some of her interactions with her dad, and her trying to remove the demons from Apollo and Bobby could be funny at times.

    Damian Tenma

Damian's great. While his normal personality was alright, his Tenma Taro personality was pretty fun, and I like how it ties into the story and the reveal that he's the true Amazing Nine-Tails.

    Phoenix Wright

Phoenix is good. He doesn't have much time to do anything major outside of supporting Apollo and Athena, but I like him reminding them the value of turning your thinking upside down, and the callbacks to Mia and his AJ appearance were nice.

    Athena Cykes

Athena's perfect. The longer timeframe and more prominent role allows for more opportunities to showcase her personality, honing in on her range of emotions and foreign knowledge. The dynamic she has with Apollo is one of my favorite defense-team dymanics in the series, her being a fellow rookie attorney makes her feel as important of a protagonist as Apollo, and I like how she uses the Mood Matrix throughout the case.

    Phineas Filch

Phineas is fantastic. His role in the story didn't leave that major of an impact on me, but his attempts to both hide and showcase his sneakiness and sleaziness are really funny and charming, and I like the idea of his grandfather's past actions sabotaging Florent's present plans.

    Bobby Fulbright

Bobby's fantastic. His passion for justice and how much it's used against him as he's never certain which line of reasoning aligns the most with justice makes him the most fun detective to interact with, and while he doesn't have much to offer to the case compared to Gumshoe or Ema outside of his normal detective work, I like how the case showcases the importance of his relationship with Simon.

    Rex Kyubi

    He dead.

    Florent L'Belle

Florent's okay. Nothing he did really interested me, and he felt like he was here just to be a culprit, but I didn't dislike anything about him, so he's fine.

    The Amazing Nine-Beards

The Judge is great. In the last case, he felt pretty standard for a judge and didn't have a lot of noteworthy moments outside of repeating jokes other characters told, but here, he gets a ton more funny moments in the form of reactions to and following up on what other characters do or say, like Taka landing on his head or being tricked by Simon into giving the opening statement.

    Simon Blackquill

Simon's perfect. His buildup and introduction are really cool, and having a convicted criminal as a prosecutor is a really cool idea. The ways he tricks people into doing what he wants, like making the Judge give the opening statement, and acts tired of everyone's foolishness make him a really entertaining, yet intimidating character, and I really like how the case showcases how much he can do with him breaking his chains, only able to be stopped by Bobby shocking him. He's my favorite character in this case.

    Overall

This is a great cast. There's a surprising number of fantastic characters in this case, and while not everyone lives up to this standard, a good amount of them come close, with the worst characters just being there to serve their roles.

    Investigation - Day 1

    Investigation

This is a good investigation. I found Nine-Tails Vale to be a pretty interesting location, getting to examine the crime scene in a 3D space is cool, and getting to immediately go to every location makes the game feel quicker paced. My only issues would be that it felt a bit automated at times with the segment automatically sending us to locations in the second half, and the tutorials felt a bit overbearing, especially at the perceiving portion.

    Story

This is a fantastic opening chapter. The three anime cutscenes do a fantastic job introducing the case and concepts, building tension with the victim and suspect's reveal, and introducing Athena in a personality developing, yet comedic way in a limited timeframe. Learning about what the setting is like, portions of how the murder occurred, and how the yokai legends are used as wresting mascots is really engaging, albeit overwhelming at times with how much information can be given at a time, and it does a great job introducing the new detective and building up the new prosecutor.

    Overall

This is a great opening segment. While some aspects could be improved, particularly in how much control is taken from the player in the second half of the case, I'm really excited to continue the case, more so than I can recall from my first playthrough.

    Trial - Day 1

    Cross Examinations

These are perfect cross examinations. Ever since the first segment of the last case, I was worried the rest of the game's trials would be mostly story with occasional gameplay, with the second segment being a lucky break. That couldn't be farther from the truth, as this is already one of the most fun and engaging trials in the series.

I always enjoyed finding contradictions, the Mood Matrix section was fun and had one of the more natural feeling tutorials in the series, and the amount of player input the trial had was incredible.

    Story

This is a perfect chapter. The revelations about the murder and Tenma Taro's role in the case are highly impactful, the segment does a great job showcasing dynamics between characters like Apollo and Athena or Simon and Bobby, Simon's introduction is really cool, him breaking out of his chains and Damian becoming Tenma Taro were really fun, and overall I can't find any personal issues here.

    Overall

This is a perfect trial segment. I was always engaged in the story and having fun playing through the segment, and I'm hoping this feeling stays consistent for the rest of the case.

    Investigation - Day 2

    Investigation

This is a meh investigation. I like the perceiving section and investigating the chamber, but the game felt a bit more automated and restrictive than the last investigation segment, like investigating the crime scene again or having to wait to present evidence. I don't think it's a bad investigation, but it is a step down.

    Story

This is a good chapter. I feel the anime cutscene utilization was weaker than the first segment, and the character events shown aren't as strong as the first segment's character introductions, the revelations about Florent's role in the case kept it fairly engaging.

    Overall

This is an okay investigation segment. It's the weakest segment of the case so far, but it has its moments and hasn't ruined the case for me.

    Trial - Day 2

    Cross Examinations

These are fantastic cross examinations. While I feel the last trial segment did a better job at being consistently engaging, these still come pretty close, especially during the Mood Matrix and revisualization portions.

    Story

This is a great final chapter. While there aren't any character events on par with the first trial segment, the revelations about the true events of the murder and Damian being the Amazing Nine-Tails are still strong, and I like the ending and the final anime cutscene.

    Overall

This is a really great final segment. It's weaker than the first trial segment, but it's a major improvement from the last segment, and a really satisfying conclusion to the case.

    How I Would Improve

If I were to try and improve this case while retaining most of its original identity, I would make two changes.

    1. I would make Trucy a fellow co-defense. I don't think having two co-defenses would break the structure of the game; if anything, having a non-attorney co-defense could be a good parallel to Athena being an attorney. And I think if she had more time in the case, she could get more opportunities to showcase her personality.

My favorite moment with her in this case is her introduction, because she gets a good amount of attention and works off of Apollo pretty nicely. Plus, considering she's Phoenix daughter and we get to play as him later, she could act almost like a susbstitute for Phoenix and embody his mindset of turning your thinking upside down, but in a manner that suits her personality and method of problem solving.

    1. I would give more control to the player during the investigations. I felt the investigations did an unnecessary about of handholding or roadblocking, from automatically sending the player to another location, to only being allowed to present certain evidence when the game says so. These might seem like minor details, but they leave a major impact when they suddenly appear in the middle of a segment and remain semi-permanently. I don't feel like this lack of input would hurt the flow of the story, and even if it did, not by a significant amount.

    Final Verdict

This is a great case. While a few of the characters didn't leave a major impression, and the third segment is nothing to write home about, I was surpised by how much I enjoyed this case. A lot of the characters are fantastic, a large portion of the story was consistently engaging and interesting, and while the investigation system needs some improvements to take advantage of its new concepts, the trial system does a fantastic job continuing where the last case left off. I can see why this wouldn't be everyone's case, but from my experience, I had a lot of fun and can't wait to revisit the rest of the game.

opinion: ace attorney 4 has the best villain

    Posted: 16 Oct 2021 07:28 AM PDT

I think Kristoph Gavin is by far the best villain in the Ace Attorney franchise, specifically because he draws on everything that made us love the villains of previous games. He often reexplores similar themes with a new twist, which is a main theme of AJ itself.

Like MVK, Kristoph is obsessed with his personal record and outward appearance as a lawyer and both are willing to forge evidence or commit violent actions to preserve said record. When a rival, Gregory Edgeworth or Phoenix Wright threatens them, they are willing to commit murder to preserve their perfectionism. Both of them serve as mentors to protagonists with very different philosophies than said protagonist ends up with, like MVK in AAI1 and Kristoph in Turnabout Trump. In addition, they both are extremely emotionally abusive and controlling to their family. MVK shapes Franziska and Miles into his perfect heirs, while Kristoph controls and abuses Klavier, literally trying to kill a child just to prove his superiority.

Like Gant, he's an absolute genius and can only be taken down with unconventional means. Gant's plan to forge evidence and frame Dharke and then Ema for Neil's murder in order to get the serial killer a guilty verdict and Lana under his control was genius. Similarly, Kristoph's plan to cover his forged evidence with a poisoned stamp and nail polish was incredibly clever. Both of them had solid knowledge about the systems in place and were careful to make sure they couldn't be defeated conventionally. Gant has to be taken out by the rules of evidence law while Kristoph can only be defeated by forging evidence and then literally changing the rules.

Like Matt Engarde, he fucks up and abuses everyone in his life by pulling them into his messed up game. Matt severely emotionally damaged Celeste, Adrian, and Corrida (who was himself not without blame) with his toxic personality. Kristoph has toxic relationships with Apollo, Klavier, Phoenix, and Vera. Both of them messed up the lives of people around them with their awful personality and obsession with themselves above all else.

Like Dahlia, he has a sickly sweet outward appearance with a deep and awful interior and trick those around them with charm and good looks. Dahlia manipulates Phoenix and Terry, as well as the entire courtroom into believing her sweet lies. Kristoph starts as a mentor figure to Apollo and an older brother to Klavier. All of these characters have to come to terms with realizing someone important in their life was actually abusive and terrible all along. As well, both of them appear in previous trials only to show up as a villain in the final trial, yet in a powerless state with Dahlia being dead and Kristoph imprisoned. Only by showing them ultimately how their plan has failed are they truly defeated. Also, both of them caused a defendant to poison themselves on the witness stand...

Like Godot, he is ultimately a tragic character who can't deal with his own actions and trauma. Godot kills because he can't cope of all of his pent up anger and grief about Mia's death. Kristoph kills Zak because he can't cope with all of his pent up paranoia and despair chaining him down (likely what was behind the black psych locks).

Basically, he takes a lot of the themes and traits from previous villains that made them so great. I think he's often not as well liked as other villains because taking him down was ultimately far less satisfying, but despite the flaws of AJ's narrative structure, Kristoph is a brilliant and fantastic villain that I love (and hate, of course) so very dearly. Thank you for reading have a nice day.

    My official case tier list!

    Posted: 16 Oct 2021 09:42 PM PDT

Extra sections in the non-3DS versions ?

    Posted: 16 Oct 2021 03:37 PM PDT

According to some answers about the differences between the version, it is mentioned several times that : (e.g. here)

the 2014 script update, which trims out unnecessary bits from testimony, restores sections originally cut from the DS versions, fixes most of the typos, and makes continuity-related adjustments here and there.

Since I've began playing on the DS version for portability (currently at 2/3 of the WP trial) , but then bought the Steam version while on sale, I'm not sur if these sections cutted in the DS version are worth the loss of portability (and having to go over the 1 and 2 turnabout again).

What is actually in these cutted sections ? Testimony parts ? Trials ? Investigation ? I kinda want to continue on the DS, but if there is really some part missing I will switch to PC.
