Looking Back on The Grand Turnabout + Final Thoughts on Miles Edgeworth: Ace Attorney Investigations: Prosecutor's Path

    Posted: 14 Oct 2021 08:45 PM PDT

The end of the AAI duology and the DS era of games. From what I've seen, this is commonly ranked alongside the best cases in the series, sometimes being considered the best. Let's end this fan-translated finale by looking back on The Grand Turnabout.

    History With This Case

When I first played this case, this was the only case in the series I thought was perfect, having some of my favorite aspects and events of the series, with any issues I may have had being at least improvements from when they occurred in previous cases. I am highly doubtful that this opinion will remain the same.

This case will be judged by its characters and case segments. Character criticism will revolve around the character's personality, role in the story, and their actions throughout the case. Case segment criticism will revolve around the enjoyability of any investigations or rebuttals and quality of the story being told during that segment.

Court is now in session for the trial of The Grand Turnabout.

    Characters

    Miles Edgeworth

Miles is perfect. Almost every major character he interacts with does something to develop his character arc and prosecutor storyline, with Kay and Gumshoe being by his side no matter his occupation, Sebastian and Blaise showcasing the value of choosing your own best path and not the one of your father, Lang retaining his views of prosecutors but slowly working alongside Miles, Justine and John showcasing how representatives of the law will always have some level of humanity keeping them from being absolute in their work, and Simon using Miles's previous trust in him in I2-2 against him as he's being accused of murder, along with Will, Penny, and Lotta being good records of his old past, and Nicole, de Killer, and Sirhan being great records of his recent past.

The way his character arc continues and closes off is incredible, as he learns more about Justine after several cases of her being a nearly emotionless representative of the law, helps Sebastian overcome the expectations and abuse of Blaise to make him his own person and prosecutor, reunites with Gumshoe and gives their relationship a more personal foundation than before when he was his boss, helps Lang overcome his issues caused by SS-5 and Huang's death beginning to work together with him, and convicting Simon of his crimes despite defending him in I2-2 because his actions in both cases were in pursuit of the truth, culminating in him continuing to be a prosecutor, as fighting corruption in the law isn't just the work of defense attorneys.

    Kay Faraday

Kay's great. While her thief obsession is still a bit of an issue, I feel it was better fit into metaphors here, and she still can get some good, sometimes great interactions. And while she doesn't do much near the end of the case, I like how she works with Gumshoe to save John, and later on uses Little Thief again, as well as always being relevant in some way due to her role in the last case.

    Lotta Hart

Lotta's great. While she wasn't always interesting to me, I like how she's trying to get a scoop about a monster like in 1-4, and it's great to see her interact with Nicole after we only ever saw them apart.

    Shi-Long Lang

Lang is perfect. While he doesn't have the strict leader vs kind everyman personality traits that he did in AAI, they're perfectly substituted with an offensive detective researching Huang's death and the SS-5 incident vs a defensive victim affected by Huang's death and the SS-5 incident. Despite him only appearing briefly in I2-2, he doesn't feel out of place here due to how the murder connects to his character both in this game and the last, and the case builds off of his character from both games incredibly, showcasing how he's become more willing to work alongside Miles rather than just pursuing the same goal. The case does a great job showcasing his pain and how determined he is to avenge Huang, along with how he's affected by the reveal that Huang was a body double the whole time.

    Penny Nichols

Penny's okay. Similar to 1-3, her appearance didn't leave much of an impact on me, and she's just there.

    Di-Jun Huang

    He dead.

    John Marsh

John's perfect. Seeing him talk down to all the adults around him is really funny, and it's cool to see another Global Studios crew member after only ever seeing Will, Wendy, and now also Penny. Making him Huang and Justine's son, along with his cameo in the last cast, is a great way to make him feel like a natural inclusion to the cast despite him being a new character that left no impact on the previous cases. Alongside that, his relationship with Justine leads to some fun mother and son interactions, some sweet moments of comfort when he learns who his dad is, and a simple but effective character arc about the dangers of getting revenge for your own personal satisfaction.

    Raymond Shields

Ray's good. Similar to Kay, his worst personality traits are still pleasant at times and he isn't that important by the end of the case, but he still can get good interactions, and I like how we get to see him work as a defense attorney in a trial, albeit I wish the case gave more attention to the fact he was going up against a von Karma.

    Franziska von Karma

Franziska's okay. Her personality is still unlikeable, but I really enjoyed her interaction with Sebastian and how her relationship with Manfred parallels Sebastian and Blaise, keeping her from whipping him despite her previous threats, albeit this was ruined a bit for me as she continued to be aggressive afterwards. But even with that in mind, I feel the case found a way to justify her using her whip temporarily when she and Ray were stalling for Miles and Justine.

    Patricia Roland

Patricia's good. She has a minor role with her most notable aspects being parts of the story or recollections of I2-2, but she has a couple interactions that make her appearance noteworthy.

    Justine Courtney

Justine's fantastic. This case gives her a lot more development than the last cases did by going more into her personal life and work as a judge. Learning about her being John's mom and being blackmailed into giving a certian verdict gives her a lot more depth, as it creates a contradiction in her black and white views of the law. The fun and emotional interactions on John's side also double for Justine, and his lesson about revenge is substituted for her lesson about how the legal system isn't perfect. My only issue would be while her motherly personality is fun and sweet, I still don't find her Goddess of Law personality interesting.

    Simon Keyes

Simon's fantastic. His malicious personality is really fun, and I like how many minor incomplete details he can find to escape suspicion. The way he ties back into every case is incredible, the way he tries to manipulate Miles and Kay by referencing their trust in him in I2-2 is fantastic, and his motive for everything being a misunderstanding of who his dad was adds another layer of interest to him. My only complaint would be that similar to I2-2, his initial personality could've been more interesting.

    Regina Berry

Regina's okay. This is her most passive role of all her appearances, so she didn't leave much of an impact on me one way or another.

    Nicole Swift

Nicole's great. While I feel her personality and role in the story were stronger in I2-1, I still like how she works off of Miles and Lotta, and the way she makes and provides evidence of Simon's call to Miles and Kay is really cool.

    Will Powers

Will's great. He was more helpful than Nicole, and he has some fun interactions due to Miles being a Steel Samurai fan.

    Sebastian Debeste

Sebastian's perfect. After seeing him get emotionally manipulated by Blaise in the last case, this case increases the tragedy tenfold with him being kidnapped by accident. Seeing him go through multiple stages of viewing himself as worthless is incredibly sad, which only makes his triumphant moments more powerful.

Miles teaching him to be his own person and not stand in the shadow of his father is a great moment, especially since it initially isn't victorious as he runs away. But seeing him come back to the courthouse with new evidence and Miles helping him overtake Blaise and prove his guilt makes for one of the most satisfying victories in the entire series. He's my favorite character in this case.

    Shelly de Killer

de Killer's perfect. The issue with him from I2-1 about no one recognizing him is gone here, and like that case, this case knows the perfect times for him to enter and leave despite him not being in it for long. Seeing him casually walk away from Miles and Kay after his loud escape in I2-1 is incredible, and seeing him return at the end to confront Simon only to be stopped by the fellow assassin, Sirhan, just adds to that credibility.

    Dick Gumshoe

Gumshoe's perfect. His introduction is a great follow-up to his disappearance in the last case, with him investigating on his own and helping out Miles as a friend rather than as a prosecutor's detective. He gets some great interactions with the cast, and while Kay started to become a filler character by the end of the case, Gumshoe was always useful as he continuously found evidence and used his video analysis machine. And considering this is his last appearance so far, him getting his salary raised was the perfect way to end his story.

    Blaise Debeste

Blaise is perfect. I found his personality to be more interesting and engaging here due to him being on trial and getting more interactions with his son, with those interactions being highly devestating. Despite him not being in a lot of the case, he still leaves a major impression due to how often he seems close to winning the case by making Sebastian doubt himself about the evidence he found, along with his ties to the rest of the story like IS-7 and kidnapping Sebastian.

    Jack Cameron

    He double dead.

    Di-Jun Huang (Body Double)

    He triple dead.

    Sirhan Dogen

Sirhan's perfect. His personality is still cool like in I2-2, seeing him temporarily outside of jail is cool, his role in the story and how his present actions connect to his past is fantastic, his final interactions with de Killer, Simon, and John are incredible, and his appearance was far more memorable and impactful than in I2-2 despite him having less time in this case.

    Ema Skye

Wait, she was in this case?

    A Certain Man

The vagueness would've been more logical if Miles referred to him as "a friend of mine" instead.

    Overall

This is a really great cast. While there are some lackluster to acceptable appearances, and a number of characters that didn't utilize their full potential, a lot of characters either get their best appearances or something on par.

    Beginning, Part 1

    Investigation + Rebuttals

This is perfect gameplay. The gaps in gameplay don't feel overbearing, and both the investigation and rebuttals are consistently fun and engaging.

    Story

This is a perfect opening chapter. The opening cinematic is cool, I like how the segment follows up on the filming scene from the last case, the return of Huang and Lang is fantastic, the revelations about the murder and how Justine and aspects of I2-1 and I2-4 are associated with it are great, and it's consistently engaging and interesting.

    Overall

A perfect opening segment. This is the first time in this game that I haven't had an issue with an opening segment, which I hope is a good sign for the future segments.

    Beginning, Part 2

    Investigations + Logic Chess

This is great gameplay. While I feel the gaps in gameplay have begun to feel prominent again, the moments of gameplay present are still fun and engaging.

    Story

This is a fantastic chapter. A ton of great events occur here, from Miles's interaction with Justine, to John's rescue, to Gumshoe's reunion with the gang, to Sebastian being freed from kidnapping and returning to court to overcome his father, to Lang interrupting the trial to accuse Justine of Huang's murder, and so on. My only complaint would be that I feel this would've been better as two chapters rather than one, maybe splitting after Sebastian runs away from home.

    Overall

This is a really great segment. While I feel it would've been beneficial to make this two segments rather than one, the individual aspects within this segment are still incredible.

    Middle, Part 1

    Investigation + Rebuttals

This is perfect gameplay. The overbearing gap issues from the last segment are gone, and the gameplay feels just as consistently fun and engaging as the first segment.

    Story

This is a perfect chapter. The revelations about Blaise's involvement in the present murder and the connection to SS-5 are great, it's cool that Gumshoe's and Kay's gadgets are used again giving the characters more importance in the story, and the ways Justine and John are developed and it once again ties back to evidence and events from previous cases are incredible.

    Overall

This is a perfect segment. I didn't notice any pacing and balancing issues like the last segment, and the segment managed to be as enjoyable and important as the first despite what the previous dip in quality would've suggested.

    Middle, Part 2

    Rebuttals

This is perfect gameplay. This segment is filled almost to the brim with fun and engaging deductions that work alongside the story, never feeling lackluster or compromised.

    Story

Another perfect chapter of the story. The opening interaction between John and Justine is really sweet, the revelations about the double Huangs and the increasing connections to prior cases are great, Sirhan's return is cool, and the reveal of Simon being the mastermind behind the entire game is still incredible even when knowing who he is.

    Overall

This is another perfect segment. Despite the minor hiccup of the second segment, this case is continuing to consistently deliver stellar gameplay and story events that the previous cases mostly ever offered in portions.

    End

    Rebuttals

This is great gameplay. While I'd say it's my least favorite of the case due to the unnecessary fingerprint section and slightly overbearing gaps, it's still fun and engaging a majority of the time.

    Story

This is a great final chapter. While I feel it went on for a bit too long, and the scene of everyone cheering on Miles was unnecessary, it still manages to have impactful revelations about Simon's actions throughout the game and incredible moments like de Killer and Sirhan's final interaction, John refusing to get revenge for his dad's death, and the final scenes of Miles choosing his path as a prosecutor and Gumshoe getting his salary raised.

    Overall

This is a great final segment. While I do feel it's the weakest segment of the case, it's still a more than satisfying conclusion to the case and everything that was built up.

    How I Would Improve

If I were to try and improve this case while retaining most of its original identity, I would make two changes.

    1. I would give more characters more to do. A good amount of the characters tend to only have one or two uses and then do nothing for the rest of the case. Characters like Gumshoe continue to be useful throughout the entire case by finding more evidence, while characters like Kay don't have much to do after the Little Thief segment outside of give moral support or stall for time. Unless the useless characters disappeared by the end of the case, like how Sebastian disappears after his trial is over and his character arc is complete, these characters would need to offer more to maintain a consistent value.

    2. I would split Beginning, Part 2 into two segments. While I usually have an issue with segments that have too little content, the opposite is true here. The sections before and after Sebastian runs away from home genuinely feel like two different segments, and considering this is the longest segment of the game and this case only has five segments, I don't see why this was made one segment.

    Final Verdict

This is a really great case. Much like I-5, while it has more issues than a most finale cases which keep it from being fantastic, specifically due to its ending, it still manages to top everything the AAI duology had thanks to the ways it develops and improves almost everything that came before it. A lot of the issues with previous cases either disappeared or have less of an impact here, so while it's not as strong as most finale cases, it comes painfully close, and still makes for an incredible ending to this era of AA.

Final Thoughts on Miles Edgeworth: Ace Attorney Investigations: Prosecutor's Path

We can't talk about AAI2 without mentioning the lack of a localization. It's sad that we likely won't get an official AAI2 in the near future, not only because of how important this game is to the series, but because this is the only game that has the potential to fix the issues of the original and fan-translation. While some issues are baked into the structure of the game itself, there are chances to fix some issues in the script, or even a bit of the pacing. I feel like the only way we could get a localization is if they add extra cases or bundle it with the first, or even a third game, to ensure it sells well.

But judging Prosecutor's Path as the series's AAI2, my biggest issue would have to be the pacing and balancing. I would say this game has the most ambitious story in the series so far, with every case having almost equal importance in the grand scheme of things, and each previous case having a noticable impact of the upcoming case, but there are times where that ambition works against it.

Some of the segments of the cases suffer from a lack of content, with the story suffering from short timeframes, and the gameplay suffering from long gaps in player input. There are sections of the game that would feel far more enjoyable if they weren't a game and were a TV show or movie, because this game can feel like nothing more than an interactive cutscene at times. AAI had my favorite gameplay system of the series so far, because of how it allowed for more opportunities in player immersion and storytelling, and I feel this game doesn't always utilize the opportunities in equal capacity.

Along with those aspects, I feel it can hurt the cast at times. Characters like Kay, Gumshoe, and Ray only have a meaningful purpose in about two to three cases, and they have nothing to do outside of the moments of those cases, and while I don't consider a character that does nothing to be a bad character, that appearance will always be worse than an appearance where they do something useful, so despite them having fantastic appearances, I can't call them fantastic characters in this game.

But despite these issues I have, this is still a great game, and it barely passed T&T as my favorite game so far. While none of the cases in this game are fantastic, every case is at the very least great, which is something all the prior games failed to accomplish. While the first four games managed to have higher highs, both the AAI games did a better job maintaining a consistently high quality that remains prevalent in some form throughout the entirety of the experiences, with this game's quality being consistently higher. There are several great and fantastic characters introduced, and there are several great and fantastic appearances from old characters. This is one of my favorite stories I've ever witnessed, and despite the occasional issues with the gameplay, it still has a lot of fun, engagement, and variety to offer that not even AAI had before.

I really hope this game gets localized someday, not only because I want more people outside of the AA fandom or with little knowledge in emulation to get a chance at playing it, but so that any issues with the fan-translation that can be fixed hopefully do. But even if we're always left with the fan-translation, I'm more than satisfied with what I've been given.

Am I the only one who doesn't like aa4, 5, and 6 being referred to as a "trilogy"?

    Posted: 14 Oct 2021 03:24 AM PDT

The original Trilogy was clearly contiguous with a consistent storyline and character arcs that lasted over all 3 games. They play into each other quite nicely and the end leaves no unsatisfying loose ends untied. From what I've heard and played (haven't finished either yet) investigations and dgs are pretty much the same way.

4, 5, and 6 all are clearly their own games though without a contagious plotline. Both Phoenix and Apollo have 3 separate arcs each game instead of one contiguous arc. Plotlines from the previous games (namely AJ) are just dropped entirely. Other than brief cameos from Blackquill and Klavier, we don't see real development of the previous prosecutors like Franziska and Edgeworth got.

Don't get me wrong: they all work very well as individual games, but I really don't see a trilogy. Since I vastly prefer AJ to soj and DD, it makes me a little offended when people refer to the three as a trilogy when an actual trilogy stemming from AJ would have looked entirely different

Random thought I had during school about Godot

    Posted: 14 Oct 2021 09:48 AM PDT

Disclaimer: this post isn't about bashing Godot because I actually love his character, before someone decides to jump to conclusions.

    Hello, new to this subreddit!

So canonically, the prosecutors we've faced during the trilogy had solved many cases in the past (Edgeworth, Franziska, Manfred and Payne in some extent are examples of those). Them having won in many cases earned them the reputation of being the "best" prosecutors, am I right?

But Godot on the other hand was a rookie prosecutor, and he "lost" his first case and the rest of the cases where he appeared, wouldn't that make him the "worst prosecutor" (in the AA universe at least)?

TL:DR: Godot would be the "worst" prosecutor in the trilogy because he didn't win any single case unless he won some offscreen that we don't know about.

The Ace Attorney series sure does love poison (TGAA1, AJ and T&T spoilers)

    Posted: 14 Oct 2021 12:02 PM PDT

So T&T was basically centered around poison:

[4th case] Dahlia Hawthorne poisoned Diego Armondo

[4th case I think] Dahlia Hawthorne poisoned Phoenix Wright (almost anyway)

[1st case] Dahlia Hawthorne poisoned Terry Fawles

[3rd case I think] (Correct me if I'm wrong) Glen Elg was poisoned by whatever that guy's name was-

AJ also used quite a bit of poison:

[Final case] Kristoph Gavin poisoned Drew Misham

[Final case] Kristoph Gavin plotted to poison Vera Misham

    Then there's TGAA:

[TGAA1-1] Miss Swan on the Hat (what was her name again?) poisoned Dr John H Wilson

[TGAA2-1] Miss Swan on the Hat was poisoned by Raiten Menimemo

    [TGAA2-2] William Shamspeare was poisoned by {IDK I haven't played the rest of the case yet}
