Godot is a misogynist, and that's kind of a good thing.

    Posted: 13 Oct 2021 10:51 PM PDT

I'd like to preface this by saying that I don't mean it's a good thing to be a misogynist, but that it makes sense for Godot, as a character, to have misogynistic views on women. Also heavy spoilers for Trials and Tribulations.

Godot is a character that's fundamentally built on his flaws; his percieved failure to protect Mia, his projection of that guilt onto Wright and his self-admitted childish fantasy to beat Wright in court and prove that he isn't Mia's successor. His plan in 3-5 is flawed because of his unwillingness to compromise; he himself admits this. He could've just told Wright, or told Maya, but he wanted to play the role of the hero. His self-indulgent nature is key to the case and is something that he is well aware of as he contemplates whether he really wanted to protect Maya or just wanted to absolve himself of his intense guilt.

That is to say, that Godot's worldview is at least a little misogynistic. This old-school chivalrous ideal of men protecting their women is out-dated and unfair. And it's only within this framework that Godot can operate; he blames himself and Phoenix for the death of Mia, when neither of them could've realistically prevented it. He puts himself in the position of the "avenger", back from Hell to make Wright pay for his sins and selfishly tries to best him in court. As I mentioned prior, his whole plan to protect Maya could've been easily streamlined if he swallowed his pride, but he was so focused on being the knight in shining armor that he wasn't willing to go to Phoenix for help.

Godot's breakdown is handled so excellently. It's a broken man coming to terms with the truth that he knew all along but wasn't willing to accept. He wanted to "protect" Mia, but his obsession with the past was ultimately detrimental and unhealthy. He's contrasted with Phoenix in the final moments of the trial; for just a second, he sees Mia next to Phoenix. While Godot is trapped in the past, Phoenix is moving forwards. Godot is trying to selfishly "avenge" Mia, while Phoenix is carrying out her true wishes by being the kind of defense attorney she could be proud of.

This is all to say I really, really love Godot and it annoys me when people say he isn't misogynistic, when it feels like it's an integral part to his character. I'd love to hear your thoughts on this, if you agree/disagree, etc.

Barok van Zieks in court makes me laugh out loud

    Posted: 13 Oct 2021 06:14 PM PDT

I love how, with the exception of Spirit of Justice, the prosecutors in each game have grown steadily more irreverent and disrespectful, until we have this guy from TGAAC. His courtroom antics, while I know they're genuinely due to his frustration with the justice system and it's not meant to be funny, consistently had me cracking up.

    Pray forgive the discourtesy.

As always, GAA has many wonderful non-essential dialogue.

    Posted: 13 Oct 2021 04:05 PM PDT

As in my usual procedure with AA games, after beating a case I always go back and present everything to everyone and get every possible question wrong, just to see all the wonderful dialogue the game has that 99% of people never see.

As is usual, there's lots of wonderful stuff, particularly in the wrong answer chains in court and during deductions, but also in optional investigation presents or examines. It's a riot seeing all the different ways Ryunosuke makes a fool of himself or gets wrecked by everyone around him when he gets something wrong, all of which are context-sensitive to what you're getting wrong. Most of them are annoying to screenshot since they're best in sequence, but here's a few good single-line ones.

Apparently being a detective is higher stakes than I thought.

Ace Attorney, boiled down into a single sentence.

    Iris references a certain someone.

If anyone has any screenshots of their own, feel free to post them!

What game do you think has the "darkest" mood in the series? (please put spoiler tags on explanations for your responses)

Title self-explanatory. If you want, you can also tell us what you believe is the case that has the "darkest" mood in the series.

So...where do we go from here?

    Posted: 13 Oct 2021 06:51 PM PDT

So, I think it's fair to say at this point the 20th anniversary has come and gone now. While we know from Nuri there'll be a few more art pieces, the history section will be going up in the future and there's the Famitsu article next week (though that crucially has nothing to directly do with Capcom), as it stands, the bulk of the anniversary has now happened. A few new art pieces, a fairly simple anniversary site with a relatively generic "Thank you" message, a corner at the Tezuka collaboration, and a big game sale. We might get more, but as it currently stands there's zero evidence

So, now, where do we, and the franchise, go from here? Feel free to say whatever you think will be the case from here on out, I'll be curious to hear what you think.

A few thoughts about the Van Zieks family estate/titles (huge spoilers for TGAA2)

    Posted: 13 Oct 2021 09:35 PM PDT

I was thinking about what role Barok would play in Iris' life after he learned the truth of her birth and it occurred to me that Iris might actually be the true heir of the estate.

We know the estate belonged to Klint before his death. He no doubt inherited it from his father via primogeniture. According to that form of inheritance, the estate always passes to the oldest male heir. If the oldest male heir dies it passes to the next oldest and so on.

It's not surprising, then, that the estate passed to Barok after Klint's death. The curveball, however, is that Iris exists. She is a legitimate heir to Klint. Now women could not directly inherit the title or estate per se (given the male heir thing) but her son would be available to

Sometimes estates were entailed (like Longbourn in Pride and Prejudice where Mr. Bennet was unable to will his estate to any of his daughters because it was designated for male heirs only--in the case of that novel, that heir was the obnoxious Mr. Collins). It's possible that the Van Zieks estates was entailed like that which would mean that the estate would remain in Barok's hands.

TL;DR it's possible that Barok Van Zieks does not actually have the full ownership of the estate. This doesn't necessarily affect the plot it's just interesting to consider

Are all cases like this or did I just miss something?

"The murder weapon was this statue of the thinker but it's actually a clock that the victim took to France which is why it's 3 hours late but actually 9 hours fast. What you didn't figure that out dumbass?"

Something that confused me after finishing TGAA2 (spoilers duh)

    Posted: 13 Oct 2021 11:38 PM PDT

So one thing revealed in the final case of TGAA2 is that the "Reaper of Bailey" is actually an organization lead by Stronghart. The point of confusion is this fact in relation to the murder of Magnus McGilded. McGilded was killed by Ashley Graydon and from my understanding, his motive has nothing to do with the Reaper organization. Was it a matter of Graydon beating the Reaper to the punch or is he secretly connected to the organization?
