A Small Thing to be Aware of for Tomorrow

    Posted: 19 Oct 2021 07:25 PM PDT

Okay, so in a matter of...about 24 hours, give or take, Famitsu's big retrospective on AA is going to be dropping. The 36-page feature will have a couple things, including three new art pieces (one from Iwamoto, another from Nuri), a big fan-survey, a timeline of the entire franchise (which will presumably also go up on the anniversary site) and developer interviews with a variety of people who have worked on the franchise.

    Few things of note:

    • It is very, very unlikely that there will be a game announcement. Do not get your hopes up for that whatsoever.
    • The "survey" is just the accounts of a mere 1400 fans. For an idea on how small that is, a Netarabo survey earlier in the year had 3300 recipients.
    • This retrospective is not something directly hosted by Capcom. Nowhere on the official Japanese twitter have they even mentioned it or the survey.

Other than that, feel free to look forward to the event!

    Posted: 19 Oct 2021 02:56 PM PDT

It's gonna be a map that has various AA locations from all games fit onto the island. The big spots I wrote down are Hazakura Temple with the Dusky Bridge, Kurain, Gourd Lake and a general Court Area with the Courtroom and Detention Center, Prosecutors Offices etc... Many tiny references and Easter eggs too!

So hopefully soon I'll be able to show you guys on this subreddit and share the dream code too so you can visit :)) Been a fan for many years and I feel at home in the franchise

My favorite thing about this is the "on this" qualification Edgeworth adds. It implies that maybe he has agreed to be Gumshoe's wingman before? In any case, I really need to see how that would go now.

Something That Shouldn't Happen if Athena Gets Her Own Game

    Posted: 19 Oct 2021 11:47 AM PDT

The 20th anniversary makes me optimistic about the future of the franchise, as Capcom said that it does in fact still want to make new games. I can say with relative certainty that most people on this sub want to see a seventh main series installment, and so do I. However, there is some debate in this community on what that seventh installment should be, or more accurately, on who it should be about. From my experience, Athena Cykes: Ace Attorney seems to be the most popular idea on this sub, followed by ideas such as another game with Phoenix, another game with Apollo, or even TGAA3 with Ryunosuke. Initially, I wanted Athena to get her own game, especially after seeing how Capcom handled her in SOJ. However, upon realizing that Capcom likely won't make a game about an unpopular character like Athena, I began to oppose the idea and began to seriously believe that Capcom will simply kill her off. However, a few people on this sub have told me that her popularity has increased in Japan, with her placing tenth in a most popular AA characters poll, ahead of the likes of Ryunosuke and Barok. This might be a fluke given TGAAC's lack of popularity in Japan, but it could be a legitimate sign that Athena is becoming more and more popular. So perhaps a game starring Athena isn't as unlikely as I thought it would be.

That being said, there is one thing that I don't want to see from a hypothetical Athena Cykes: Ace Attorney. The first thing I don't want Capcom to do is give her the "Apollo treatment." You might already know what I mean by that, but if you don't, it means not only making the game about her, but also giving her way too much special treatment, similar to the treatment Apollo received in SOJ. Not only was Apollo ultimately the main protagonist of SOJ, but he also received an incredibly convoluted backstory that is today often made fun of and even contradicts his backstory in AJ. I don't want Capcom to make the same mistake with Athena. Besides, Athena already has a tragic backstory, so making it even more tragic would just be lame. Yet, I have seen people on this sub talking about her father and such, and how they want her to do something involving her father or whatever (I don't know any specifics). While it is true that Athena's father is never mentioned, creating a subplot revolving around her father will only lead to Athena getting the Apollo treatment. Trust me, I more or less had an AC:AA that gave her the Apollo treatment, and while I wouldn't consider the game particularly bad, it did give Athena way too much. I'm not saying she should receive extra attention; being the protagonist would naturally lead to that, but she should receive no more attention than necessary. Should a hypothetical AC:AA idea still be about some of Athena's character development? Of course, but it shouldn't be excessive.

Before I go, some people on this sub, namely u/ashu54, don't like the repeated idea of a rookie attorney blossoming into an "ace attorney," as was done to Phoenix, Apollo, and Ryunosuke. Naturally, these people have an even greater issue with AC:AA because they believe that it would be about the same old thing. I understand that; as a Pokémon fan, I have grown a bit tired of the recurring formula in Pokémon games (eight gyms, evil team, Elite Four, Champion), and I don't really have an answer to their idea. I should say that I am not supporting AC:AA in this post; I was simply stating what I don't want to see in a hypothetical AC:AA. While someone could come up with an alternate character development for Athena, I don't have anything really. I do have my own AA7 idea, which isn't so much about the protagonist's development into an "ace attorney," but I don't want to talk about it in this post.

    That is all.

Looking Back on Turnabout for Tomorrow

    Posted: 19 Oct 2021 10:27 PM PDT

We're at the finale, except not really since 5-DLC, but also really because this is chronologically the finale, and it's time to stop thinking now. From what I've seen, while not as consistently popular as the GBA or spinoff finales, this is still a really popular case, albeit it also depends on if you tie it in with 5-4 or not. Let's finish this game, but not really, but also yes, and I told myself to stop thinking while looking back on Turnabout for Tomorrow.

    History With This Case

Initially, I thought this was a fantastic case, being my favorite of the game due to how it improved from the previous cases and carried over the best aspects of 5-4.

This case will be judged by its characters, trial segments, and investigation segment. Character criticism will revolve around the character's personality, role in the story, and their actions throughout the case. Trial segment criticism will revolve around the enjoyability of the cross examinations, and quality of the story being told during that segment. Investigation segment criticism will revolve around the enjoyability of the general investigations, and quality of the story being told during that segment.

Court in now in session for the trial of Turnabout for Tomorrow.

    Characters

    Phoenix Wright

Phoenix is good. Once again, he didn't leave as major of an impact on me as in the GBA trilogy or early AJ, but he had a couple chuckle-worthy moments, and I like the callback to AJ.

    Trucy Wright

Trucy's okay. Despite this being her most prominent appearance, she didn't leave a major impact on me due to her weak personality and becoming a hostage for a majority of the case.

    Yuri Cosmos

Yuri's good. His minor appearance is weaker than the last case's due to his lesser importance, but his segway stuff was still funny.

    Solomon Starbuck

Solomon's good. His main case appearance didn't do much for me, but his epilogue appearance did get some emotion out of me.

    Juniper Woods

Juniper's good. Similar to Solomon, she didn't leave a major impact, but she did get some emotion as this case did more to develop her friendship with Athena and actually made me care about it.

    Apollo Justice

Apollo's fantastic. His objection against's Athena's trial ending was great, and after the last case failed to make his inner turmoil with Clay's death interesting, this case goes above and beyond to showcase how he's coping with Clay's death in the form of indicting Athena of Clay's murder until he can get rid of the doubt inside him. This is a fantastic way to showcase his pain and develop him as a lawyer, as it goes against Phoenix's views of believing in your clients until the bitter end, but makes sense emotionally as Clay was his best friend, and logically as Apollo wants Phoenix to prove him wrong, a common practice as witnesses usually give testimony doubting the defendant's credibility and innocence which the defense have to use to find contradictions in to prove otherwise.

After the last two cases failed to keep Apollo and Athena's dynamic entertaining, this case does that, but also gives it a major layer of emotion as Athena, Apollo's fellow rookie attorney and previous partner on all cases, including Clay's, is the one he indicts, and their confrontation turned reunion after Apollo's doubt is cleared is my favorite moment with Apollo in the series as he initially regrets his actions only for Athena to tell him what he was doing wasn't a bad thing, ultimately followed up by their and Phoenix teamup, some fun dynamic moments, and a strong appearance in the epilogue.

My only issue would be that while I like how his interaction with Aura ties into the story, it wasn't that interesting of a first impression. But despite that, and despite the last case having my least favorite appearance of Apollo's, this is my favorite appearance of his.

    Aura Blackquill

Aura's fantastic. While her personality didn't always work for me, it could be entertaining at times, both before and after the hostage situation. Her taking hostages to control Athena's trial is really cool and showcases her hatred for her due to suspecting her of killing Metis. Her relationship with Simon also gets further developed here, both in her interaction with him when discussing his execution date, and after her control of the trial is lost, and she witnesses him being set free from his chains moments before she's arrested with tears in her eyes.

    Clonco

Clonco's good. He is still Aura's tool most of the time, but he could be funny on occasion without Aura.

    Bobby Fulbright

Bobby's fantastic. While I feel making him a faceless spy takes away a bit of the human factor most final culprits have, I feel it also works to his advantage a bit as it's really interesting to disect how his manipulation of his emotions plays a part in the crimes and his testimony. Even when knowing he's the culprit, his reveal still hits hard due to how friendly and helpful he's been in the previous cases.

And while some people take issue with Bobby being a persona of a dead person meaning the Phantom himself has no personality, I personally consider his Bobby persona and the Phantom as the same personality, and both him acting like a secretive undercover agent and manipulating his emotions to keep up the act of Bobby has been the most consistently funny and enjoyable he's been in the entire game. Plus, there's something cool about how the evidence that got him convicted was a gift from a victim of his murder to the person he tried to frame for murder.

    Simon Blackquill

Simon's perfect. This case managed to bring back the likeable traits of his criminalistic personality in his interactions with the cast, and amplify them through the development he gets in this case. His relationship with Aura is given more depth, his execution date give the case some great stakes, the things he did in the past and present to keep Athena from being arrested for allegedly killing her mom are incredibly tragic, and seeing him freed from his chains and reuniting with Athena to defeat Bobby is one of the most satisfying events in the series. This is my favorite appearance of his.

    Pearl Fey

Pearl's okay. She doesn't really have a reason for being here and she doesn't do much of value, but it's not my least favorite appearance of hers. Still, she's my least favorite character in this case.

    Miles Edgeworth

Miles is great. I feel they could've done more with him, even if he isn't essential to the story outside of being a replacement prosecutor, but he could be fun at times, and I feel this case kind of evolves him from AAI2 as he acknowledges that him being a prosecutor is an essential part of finding the truth of the crime and not just a means of getting people declared guilty.

    Athena Cykes

Athena's perfect. Every appearance of hers in this case is incredible, from the detention center scene introducing her black psyche locks, to her trial with her fluctuating between confidence and fear due to the possibility that she killed her mom but ensuring that everything will be okay as her psyche locks are broken, to her dealing with Apollo indicting her of Clay's death but ultimately understanding where he's coming from and why he's doing this leading to their sweet reunion, to her equally sweet reunion with Simon as they work together and trick Bobby into faking his emotions, to her working together with Phoenix and Apollo to take down Bobby, to her appearance in the epilogue and so on. She was consistently enjoyable, interesting, and hitting several different emotions, making this my favorite appearance of hers and my favorite character in this case.

    Metis Cykes

    She dead.

    Jeff Bridges

The Judge is good. Ditto his appearance in the last case.

    Ponco

Ponco's great. She didn't leave a major impression on me, but her arguments with Miles were fun, and it's really cool to cross examine what's basically a talking time capsule.

    Overall

This is a really good cast. It's brought down a bit by the amount of characters that feel like extended cameos, after the previous cases had trouble making one fantastic character, the amount of fantastic characters here is not something I want to overlook.

    Investigation - Day 1

    Investigation

This is a good investigation. It's not as interesting to investigate as before since there's only one new location, but it and the phsyce lock trial were pretty fun.

    Story

This is a great first chapter. I feel the dark age of the law plotline is still weak, Apollo's appearance was fine, and the Maya reference was forced, but the stuff we learn about Simon, Athena, and Metis is cool, the hostage situation is a good way to build tension, and Athena once again gets the best aspect of the plot as she becomes indicted of the murder of her mom and the black psyche locks return.

    Overall

This is a really good opening segment. I wish it could've been more engaging and consistently interesting, but it does a good job leading into the rest of the case.

    Trial - Day 1 Part 1

    Cross Examinations

These are perfect cross examinations. This has been the most fun and engaging a trial has been in the game so far, from finding contradictions in testimonies to the evolution of the Mood Matrix by pairing it alongside a contradictory testimony.

    Story

This is a perfect chapter. The revelations about Metis's murder and how it ties into Clay's murder are heavily impactful, Athena and Simon get some fantastic development and tragic moments together, Athena once again has the best moments of her standing as defense despite her fears and trauma, and her psyche locks being broken allowing for her to be confident that she didn't kill her mother, and the cliffhanger with Apollo wanting to continue the trial is pretty affective.

    Overall

This is a perfect trial segment. There hasn't been a perfect segment since 5-2, and this segment to be a return to form by focusing on and developing the story aspects that currently matter the most, while ensuring it's consistently engaging to experience.

    Trial - Day 1 Part 2

    Cross Examinations

These are perfect cross examinations. Despite the gaps in gameplay, everything here managed to be consistently fun and engaging, and those gaps didn't feel overbearing despite their size.

    Story

This is a perfect final chapter. I feel this is where the dark age of the law was handled best, as while it definitely could've had a better outcome, I feel its utilization works here as they state at the end how clearing it will be a process and not a sudden change just because Bobby was arrested, along with the callback to AJ giving it some level of an actual basis.

Along with that, the revelations about the true events of the murder, Athena and Apollo's confrontation turned reunion, Simon being freed as Aura takes his place in prison, Athena and Simon emotionally reuniting and working together in court, all three attorneys serving as defense and adding something of value, Bobby's defeat, the epilogue; all of these together gave me a feeling that no other case has managed to encapsulate.

    Overall

This is a perfect final segment. I feel there technically could've been ways to make it better, like doing more with the gameplay or the dark age of the law, but even with that in mind, I still don't consider this segment to be flawed. I think any segment of any case, even if I also think it's flawless, has the potential to be better in some form, and this segment's potential was just more noticable. But despite that, I'm still 100% satisfied with how this case ended.

    How I Would Improve

If I were to try and improve this case while retaining most of its original identity, I would make two changes.

    1. I would cut Pearl from the case. While this isn't my least favorite appearance of hers, she has no reason to be here outside of a reason for Maya's letter and the black psyche lock explanation, and her personality is nothing special. Unless they made her a likeable character or had her contribute more to the case emotion or evidence-wise, she doesn't need to be here.

    2. I would make the Maya reference more natural. This ties into my first complaint, but having Pearl alongside Maya's letter does make this feel entirely like fanservice. It would've made more sense for him to just check his mail, get the confidence boost from Maya, maybe change his line of reasoning after reading it like how it inspired him to hold the case in the bombed courthouse, and continue the investigation.

    Final Verdict

This is a great case. I went into this afraid that this wouldn't be as good as I remembered and that I would be left with 5-2 as my favorite case of the game, and while my opinion of the case itself has worsened due to its weak beginning and obsession with including as many minor character appearances as possible, this is still my favorite case in the game so far. A lot of what didn't work in the last case like Apollo's character arc and the personalities of some characters, or even previous cases like Athena and Junie's friendship in 5-1 and 5-3, managed to be salvaged in this case, with the story and gameplay being far more entertaining and engaging, and almost every returning character having a better appearance here than in the last case, with all of these positives culminating in an experience no prior case has ever presented.

Not counting 1-5, this is my second least favorite finale case so far, as the issues with this case overtook it more than other finale cases, but this is still a really satisfying end to the main portion of the game, and it almost made it in my current top ten cases. It's not as fantastic as I remember it being, but I still love this case for how much it introduced, evolved, and salvaged.

Ace Attorney: Iris Fey. A complete alternative universe Fanfic.

    Logo done by: AceDemoMuse76

    Hello everyone,

I finally finished this fic after about one year of planning and writing. This fic is a complete alternative universe. The characters used are the trilogy characters (without 1-5). All the characters have different roles and stories. The fic has 10+ cases and the story is about Iris being a lawyer and solving different cases. The total length is about 135k words.

It was overwhelming to write because of how the concept is restricting and very hard. The writing process was overly complicated and I was almost desperate at some points but I never gave up. Taking characters from a limited pool, creating new stories and connecting them, and making new cases, all based on what's available. The rule I followed is using characters profiles. And the result is this complete alternative universe and story.

    Warning:

The fic contains multiple pairings and dynamics. It's an alternative universe and the choices made are based on what's available and based on analyzing the characters and making a functional story. All of the characters are changed.

    The fic:

This is the first part of the fic.

I hope you enjoy reading it. Thank you.

I want to be like Shi-long Lang

Barring his discrimination against prosecutors, Lang is the type of professional that I want to be like. He's a great and empathetic leader. He even remembered the birthday of someone who was loosely related to one of his men. All of his men respect him. He leads a loyal "wolf pack", of sorts. He even gets directly involved in danger if he deems it necessary, and he also personally and privately deals with the misbehavior of anyone who works under him.

I want to be a leader like him.
