What are the "hard" plot holes in Ace Attorney?

    Posted: 18 Oct 2021 11:10 PM PDT

By that, I refer to instances that aren't "X character doesn't say/do Y, Plot Hole", but actual concrete examples where the factual logic presented is impossible if you actually run through all the details in your head.

I'm certain there's quite a few of these throughout all ten games, but I'm curious how many people can identify.

Favorite animations in the AA series?

    Posted: 18 Oct 2021 10:33 AM PDT

The other day, I asked what people's least favorite AA animations are. I thought it would be nice to ask the opposite, so what are your favorite AA animations?

Here are mine, organized by game/arc (with spoiler tags, if necessary):

    Original Trilogy:

Anything Phoenix does as a college student. I love his design so much.

    AJ

Klavier's sassy lean forward. I don't know why.

    DD/SoJ

Juniper Woods's crying and pulling her braids

Whenever Taka and Blackquill do something in tandem (like laughing)

Phoenix's investigation of the Founder's Orb in 6-1, Blackquill's shake-up—I mean, uh, wake-up—call in 6-4, and Apollo and Athena's discovery of the secret of the Orb in 6-5

Sad Ema in Spirit of Justice

Datz in Spirit of Justice. Just in general.

Uendo Toneido's switches; my favorite is Kisegawa (6-4)

    TGAA/DGS

    Ryuunosuke's palm slap

    Sholmes's melodramatic fall

    Tusspell's shushing animation (2-3)

    Van Zieks's bottle toss

    Daley Vigil's self-shaking (2-4)

Looking Back on The Cosmic Turnabout

    Posted: 18 Oct 2021 09:36 PM PDT

Why is it called "The Cosmic Turnabout" and not "The Earthbound Turnabout" considering we don't solve a crime in space? From what I've seen, this is a fairly popular case, but the enjoyment of the case tends to depend on if you view it as a standalone case or the first part of a two episode case. Let's ignore the fact that "case" and "episode" aren't the same word while looking back on The Cosmic Turnabout.

    History With This Case

Initially, I found this case to be alright, being a general improvement from the previous cases, but still lacking due to poor setup of certian plotlines and being somewhat uninteresting compared to the next case.

This case will be judged by its characters, trial segments, and investigation segment. Character criticism will revolve around the character's personality, role in the story, and their actions throughout the case. Trial segment criticism will revolve around the enjoyability of the cross examinations, and quality of the story being told during that segment. Investigation segment criticism will revolve around the enjoyability of the general investigations, and quality of the story being told during that segment.

Court in now in session for the trial of The Cosmic Turnabout.

    Characters

    Apollo Justice

Apollo's okay. I liked the positive influence he had on Solomon, but I didn't find his grief of losing Clay to be interesting since I never knew Clay before this case, though I like how it kind of introduces the origins of "I'm fine." He's my least favorite character in this case.

    Juniper Woods

Wait, she was in this case?

    Athena Cykes

Athena's great. Similar to her role in the last case, her personality was pretty weak, but the character events are what made her feel really worthwhile; in this case, it was another Mood Matrix section, her cheering up Solomon with Apollo's "I'm fine" catchphrase, her past connections to the space station foreshadowed here, and her becoming a suspect of the crime by the end of the case.

    Solomon Starbuck

Solomon's okay. His relationship with Apollo was nice, but like him, I also don't care about his relationship with Clay due to never knowing him, and his spaceman jokes varied from charming to annoying to tolerable.

    Simon Blackquill

Simon's good. Like in the last case, he's had better appearances, but he had his moments.

    Gandalf

The Judge is good. Unlike in the last case, he's had better appearances, but he had his moments.

    Clay Terran

    He dead.

    Ted Tonate

Wait, he was in this case?

    Phoenix Wright

Phoenix is okay. He felt like a more prominent version of himself in the last case, which means he was just kind of here and didn't affect me much one way or another. This is probably his most standard "lawyer" appearance in the series so far, which isn't a bad thing, but it's also not a good thing.

    Trucy Wright

Wait, she was in this case?

    Yuri Cosmos

Yuri's great. I intially didn't find his personality or role in the story to be that major, but he slowly became more entertaining and interesting due to his segway and captain humor and effect on the crime scene. He's my favorite character in this case.

    Ponco

Ponco's good. There wasn't much she offered to the case, but interacting with a robot is cool, and her connection to Athena could be fun and interesting at times.

    Bobby Fulbright

Bobby's good. While I feel his personality is the weakest here, I like how he got some development by more easily helping out the gang and having a more personal conflict with justice.

    Aura Blackquill

Aura's good. She didn't have much to offer due to her small appearance, but her antics with Clonco and connection to Simon and the case left a good impression.

I'm bunching Clonco in here since while Ponco felt like a character, Clonco felt more like a tool for Aura.

    Overall

This is an alright cast. Like 5-1 and 5-3, it has its heights, but a majority of the cast just feels like their filling their roles and getting a good or bad aspect from time to time.

    Trial - Day 1

    Cross Examinations

These are okay cross examinations. The first cross examination felt unnecessary and the gaps in gameplay felt a bit too long, but I enjoyed my time with what was left after that.

    Story

This is a good first chapter. Apollo's motivations felt pretty out of nowhere given we never saw him and Clay together, but the revelations were good and I like how it leads into 5-1.

    Overall

This is an alright opening segment. It's not the weakest opening of the game, but I feel the fact it's a trial segment doesn't work due to how underdeveloped the case itself and its impact on Apollo are, along with this meaning they need to explain a lot which hurts the gameplay as well.

    Investigation - Day 1

    Investigation

This is a great investigation. I still with there was at least one more area to investigate, but investigating the crime scene was fun, and I really like the return of the phsyce lock trials.

    Story

This is a good chapter. While there aren't many major breakthroughs or discoveries due to investigating after we learned a lot from the trial, there are still some solid revelations both at the crime scene and with Aura, and while Apollo's turmoil still doesn't work, I like how we learn about Athena's connection to the space station, as well as Bobby being more intentionally helpful than in previous cases.

    Overall

This is a really good investigation segment. While I have similar issues between the trial and investigation segments; those being Apollo's role and some balancing issues, this did feel like a better, more valuable experience than the previous segment.

    Trial - Day 2 Part 1

    Cross Examinations

These are fantastic cross examinations. They're still not consistently engaging, but they're a major improvement from the balancing issues of the first segment.

    Story

This is another good chapter. Apollo's issues are gone, but they're not really substituted with any other major character events, and I found the ending to be kind of anticlimactic and pointless. But even with those issues, the revelations about Yuri's role in the case ultimately make this chapter on par with the previous ones.

    Overall

This is a great trial segment. The story has been consistently good, albeit due to trading strengths and weaknesses with every chapter, and the gameplay is slowly getting more fun and engaging, making this my favorite segment so far.

    Trial - Day 2 Part 2

    Cross Examination

This is a fantastic cross examination. While I wish there could've been one more cross examination or a couple more bits of player input by the end, the Mood Matrix segment has been the most fun I've had in this case so far.

    Story

This is a perfect final chapter. The revelations about the true events of the murder are great, getting a not guilty verdict without discovering the culprit is incredible and helps make the ending feel more conclusive, and the cliffhanger of Athena becoming the suspect is a perfect way to end the case.

    Overall

A borderline perfect final segment. While it isn't perfect, that sudden spike in story quality makes this my favorite segment of the case, and showcases how this case managed to consistently improve overtime.

    How I Would Improve

If I were to try and improve this case while retaining most of its original identity, I would make two changes.

    1. I would change how Apollo handles Clay's death. I could see what they were trying to do by making Clay's death and Apollo's change of heart a mystery throughout the game, but much like Lana and Ema's relationship in 1-5, it feels like the developers want me to look back at similar relationships in previous cases and fill in the emotional gaps; in 1-5, it was Mia and Maya, in this case, it's Athena and Junie. This doesn't work again, because I need prior information about their relationship to become invested in any discord that arises.

Unless they hammer in the fact that Apollo's sad by making him unable to serve as defense due or having him break down in court like Athena did in the last case, or base the emotion around the fact that we didn't know Clay personally like having Apollo talk about how Phoenix and Athena wouldn't understand his pain because they didn't know Clay like he did, keeping Clay out of previous cases ultimately becomes the game's biggest flaw for me, all due to this case cutting Apollo halfway through to match 5-1's ending and focusing on the circumstances of Clay's death rather than the ways Apollo handles it and the rest of the cast perceives it.

    1. I would combine the last two trial segments. This game avoided split segments outside of 5-1, and I think that's one of its biggest strengths, as it ensures the strengths and weaknesses of the segments aren't overshadowed by artificial quantity issues, as basically every previous game has suffered from. This split further proves my point, as I feel Part 1's ending was anticlimactic, and the segment was devoid of character events, which Part 2 had.

    Final Verdict

This is a good case. Once again, the cast of characters is kind of underwhelming due to their weaker personalities and impressions left behind, and there are a couple strong old and new appearances. While Apollo's plotline was a mostly constant issue, it wasn't as major of an issue as I've seen it be for others, and overall, both the story and gameplay managed to improve overtime. I feel this is the case I currently have the least amount of major thoughts on, as outside of the ending, not much about this case left as major of an impression as previous cases, and while I feel the ending is enough to call this a case by definition, it does feel incomplete on its own. I do like this case more now than I did before, and I still think it's a good case, but I feel the circumstances of the last three cases made it really hard for this case to be anything better than this.

    7.3875/10, it's going between I-3 and 5-1.

    Ranking Every Ace Attorney Entry

    Posted: 18 Oct 2021 08:00 PM PDT

I know that you, as another AA fan, will not have the same ranking as me, I'm aware of that. But I'm not going to judge you, that's your opinion, and you're free to share it if you'd like to and I will be respectful. I, like you, enjoy the series as a whole and do not hate one game in particular. This will also not have spoilers, and most of the ones you think could be are main plot details. (But if you want my to spoiler flair it on behalf of some other readers I can.)

11: Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright

This is not a bad game, I'd like to make that clear, but it is definitely the weakest AA game. To me, this game lacks quality within its cast of characters, and it ranks the lowest for me because of it. PLvsPW tried to be unique but to me felt very unoriginal, and was not that interesting. With this being said, I loved the game. The cases were fun to tackle, the new mechanics were lovely, and the plot with the city of Labyrinthia is very interesting. But, just to me, it is the weakest game of the series.

    10: Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney

AJ is a great entry. Great music, cool characters, but it's not the best. Apollo to me is just inferior to Phoenix. He grew on me under "Phoenix Wright titles," and not his own, which to me is a problem. There was no satisfaction with this game. Apollo was alright, and the first and fourth case were great, but I unfortunately can not say I enjoyed this game like the others. It is very fun and enjoyable, and the new mechanics were fun to say the least, but the other games are just better.

    9: Miles Edgeworth: Investigations

A very strong and unique entry to the series, but still not that great. A game starring a side character that does not feature a whole lot of trial related stuff may not seem satisfactory, but this game proved it wrong. It set a new tone for the series, and I loved all the cases…besides the second, first, and third one. This game has a slow start. The first case is alright, the second case is OK, and the third case is…yikes. The new mechanics were awesome and so were the characters, but this game is still a weak entry, and for that it is placing 9th.

(This is where the games get really good. Not saying the others weren't, but it was genuinely hard ranking them from here.)

    8: Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney

A great start to the series, but it's just not as good as the other 7 remaining. The first entry has great characters, and overall a good set of cases, but let's move onto the criticisms because you already know that. This game…has a lot of wasted potential, some of it being fixed in the later releases. For example, something that I and a lot of other people have criticized is how things often got dragged on.

The biggest example is in case 2, (A good case though.) in the final trial. It ruined the climax for me, White was such a bad guy and I wanted to crush him in the last trial, but they made it too long where he gave like 5 testimonies that was very frustrating and unnecessary. And then in the fifth one…that ones just a huge example of stuff getting dragged on. 1-5 could've been hoooouuurs shorter than it was, it was way too long.

And finally, the existence of spirit mediums in the first game was kind of weak. Without the psyche locks, there wasn't really a huge point to them besides in the second case. In the second case, having Maya channel Mia was CRUCIAL to defeating Redd White, but after that it was just kind of Mia reminding you that her and the spirit mediums still existed. This was fixed in the later games though, and I'd still consider the first game to be a very strong entry to the series.

7: Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney-Justice for All

A good game that is tremendously overshadowed by its final case. Everyone remembers JFA for FMT, or how they didn't finish it because of TBT. I still think JFA is really good. The second and fourth case (Obviously.) are really good, the first case is alright, and the third case is literally just a drunk Shu Takumi writing BS on paper. JFA also released a new psyche-lock mechanic which is really good and makes the investigation very more entertaining. With this being said, the third case is still 25% of the game in a way, and JFA feels like the least important to the trilogy, so for that reason, it's only in 7th place.

6: Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney-Spirit of Justice

This game did Apollo Justice better than Apollo Justice. It gave Apollo such good development and really serves well as a finale to the series. All of the cases in the game are great, and although it was dragged on like 1-5, the fifth case of SOJ was very good. Not to mention, the DLC case was incredible as we saw Edgeworth, Butz, and a really good villain. Now although I love it, SOJ is still an example of how…ridiculous the series can be sometimes, and I felt like it gave Athena and Simon a bit of an anticlimactic reappearance, and like JFA and the first game, it just isn't as good as the others. With this being said, it was really good, and can see 6th place.

5: The Great Ace Attorney: Adventures

TGAA is really good. It brought a lot of best, like I think it has the strongest first case in my opinion, (Regardless of its unpopularity.) and a lost of worsts, like the worst villain. (I'm looking at you, Joan Garrideb, you abusing your husband with PTSD almost killed somebody.) Still I think this game is great. The first, third, and fifth case are some of the best in the series, the second case is pretty good and unique, and the fourth case is definitely pulling it down a little bit but that's fun. Not to mention, the new mechanics are incredible.

The fact that you can inspect the pieces of evidence in this game is something that the other games truly needed, and the deductions are great to play and great aesthetically. Ryunosuke is also a great protagonist, and Susato is my personal favorite assistant. So overall, this was a great game, and I recommend getting Chronicles. (Also this and 4th place could be switched around and I'd understand, they're both great.)

    4: Miles Edgeworth: Investigations 2

Such an improvement compared to the last one. This game is crazy. It brought back familiar faces, added some incredible villains, and is just a great game overall. This game really needs to be nationalized though, I played this on an emulator (Don't tell the police I told you this.) and the translation at times could have been better, but it was still great. I'd love to see a remaster and I'd totally play this game again. It mastered the mechanics from the first game, and beats its first release in so many different ways. Overall I love this game, and it deserves 4th.

    3: Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney-Trials & Tribulations

How could I not put this game in the top 3. It brings the trilogy to a brilliant conclusion and all of the cases are connected in amazing fashion. The only thing bringing this case down is that third one, which is my personal least favorite. This game at times is ridiculous, but that's kind of the charm of this one. This game being ridiculous at times is kind of what made it so good. I mean, [villain] somehow [did an action] Maya [did an action] as [defendant], (My bad, almost left a big spoiler there.) Godot had weak eyes so they made him cyclops from X-Men, and Phoenix fell off a burning bridge into ice cold water, but that's kind of what makes everything so entertaining.

I have so many good things to say about this game I can't fit it all into this little post. (Like "The Bitter Taste of Truth" which is one of the best themes in the series, and the final case in general.) Overall this game is great, and for that it can proudly take third place.

2: The Great Ace Attorney 2: Resolve

Wow, this game insane. Most of the good things about TGAA2 were already said in the TGAA spot, but there's still stuff worth talking about. There's not a bad case in this game, and like DD, the fourth and fifth case are combined. I personally think that the one of the villains from case 5 should've been in case 4, and case 5 should've been about the MAIN villain, but I'm not disappointed. This game really is a resolve to Ryunosuke's story, and it left me off very pleased. It's emotional, well written, and has a great cast of characters. If only there was more Satoru….

Overall this is second place because it's such a good game that is really worth playing.

1st: Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney-Dual Destinies

Yikes…this one might be the one people pay attention to the most, but I'll die on my grave defending DD, and then I'll get back out of the grave like ###### and die defending it a second time. This game is so good, it introduced THREE new protagonists/playable characters, and all of them got satisfying character arcs. AJ couldn't do that for one. At first I thought I'd hate this because there was no Shu Takumi, but I was pleasantly surprised, this game is so well written. The only case people may not like is the second one, which I believe is OK, not bad. The last case however, is the best in the series, no doubt. It's everything I like playing about the series in one.

The twist was genuinely good and DID have foreshadowing regardless of what people might say, and the DLC case was really good and truly had what I would call, a murder mystery. (And the defendant was a literal orca so that should really say something.) I also liked how unique this game was. It introduced new mechanics, made the investigations a lot more easy to understand, and was a lot darker than the rest of the games which is not a bad thing. Overall, this game is the best in the series.

Thanks for reading, or just looking through how I rated things. Have a good day.

Does anyone else here really love Kazuma?

    Posted: 18 Oct 2021 07:44 AM PDT

Apollo used to be my favorite character, until Kazuma stole his spot. Since TGAAC-1, I loved Kazuma. I was SO excited to see that he returned in Resolve.

I thought his resentment towards Barok was justified, but I thought it was funny how he was becoming a lot like Barok in the later cases. For example: when Runo was talking about gentlemen's clubs, Kazuma commented that "an Eastern man like him [Runo]" won't receive any invitations to a British gentlemen's club, of which Runo internally pointed out that Kazuma saying that was hypocritical. Kazuma spent a lot of time around Barok, and was picking up his mannerisms and opinions.

Also if you look at the escapades, you'll learn that Kazuma wears that red headband because he misremembered a tongue twister that Runo said to him years ago. This man is so serious most of the time, but he's actually really funny and adorable at times. I stan Kazuma.

How did Gregson know that the information of the disks that Graydon was transferring to McGilded was high level government information? If they were highly classified information that were being sent between Jigoku and Stronghart, how would've Gregson known about them? Especially considering that he was one of the targets that Stronghart wanted to kill.

SoJ on my phone looks stretched. The left side is pixellated and I can only see half of the loading icon. I read on the update info that they did something to change the screen size but it looks like it only made things worse for me. So is there a way to download the older version of the game?
