Playing for the first time (original trilogy) and am wondering if "quality of life" flaws are corrected in following installments?

    Posted: 29 Sep 2021 01:55 PM PDT

Hello Ace Attorney community! I have decided to try out these games as I was seeing a lot of hype regarding the new release a few months ago.

Thanks to recommendations seen on this sub, I started with the Trilogy, which I am enjoying a lot!

A few details have been quite annoying to me though and I wanted to know if any quality of life improvements were made in future installments.

    1. Inability to increase the speed of the dialogue (please correct me if i'm wrong! but i haven't found a way to!)

    2. When "examining" a scene, the same dialogue plays over and over if you click on the same thing (quite frustrating when I try to click on a small detail).

    3. Moving from a location to another is soooo tedious, I feel like it should be so much easier, with a dedicated menu.

Please note that I'm okay I'm playing the DS version (not the 3DS one, not sure if that makes a difference).

And sorry for the complaints, maybe after all they are what makes the charm of the game :)

DGS2 Case 3 Major Spoilers [OC]

    Posted: 29 Sep 2021 05:32 AM PDT

(Heavy spoilers for I2-5) What do you think of the mastermind?

    Posted: 29 Sep 2021 01:11 PM PDT

I finished Investigations 2 like... two weeks ago, I guess, and I REALLY liked the game. While I still have a really soft spot for 3-5, I2-5 was great in many and many levels, much like AAI2 as a whole: an awesome self-contained story, which uses worldbuilding from the mainline games (DL-6, for example) to craft great plotlines. However, I2-5 itself is not the target of discussion today: what do you think of Simon Keyes?

I'm already expecting great opinions on him, but I REALLY liked Simon. Yes, I already knew he was the big bad, but I was always wondering why he would do everything in AAI2. It was really nice to find out he was Gustavia's son and his whole motive was basically... revenge. Keyes wanted revenge on Knightley because the former thought the latter aided his father to kill the victim of IS-7, Isaac Dover, but the best part of the revenge plot imo is to get back at Roland, Blaise and the body double. Those three basically forced Simon to live on the run 24 hours per day, 365 days per year, which effectively ruined Keyes' life: he would never settle down or have a normal life, since he was faded to always run from people that are WAY above the law.

His motive for revenge on those three (because they made Simon live as someone always feeling fear forever) is great, because not only does it makes sense, but it's also a great way of telling "the Law is flawed, because the ones that have power over it are corrupt". If Simon could have trusted the courts (since, if the legal system was truly fair, he could have reported everything about SS-5 and the pursuit the three conspirators were enacting on Keyes), he wouldn't need to resort to revenge (although Keyes masterminded I2 not because he was a righteous vigilante, but simply because of selfish vengeance), and Miles knew that, and in a way or other, the big bad turned into the stepping stone for Edgeworth's character arc (which is more than great, he really didn't need to appear in any other game). A nice way of conveying a core message instead of always delivering a "Damon Gant" (who is a god-tier villain) over and over. Anyway, what are your general opinions, fellow strangers?

How Prosecutors Counter Arguments - Template Proposal

    Posted: 29 Sep 2021 02:38 AM PDT

Over the course of the series we've had multiple rivals, with each one being different from the others (ideally). However, there's more to each rival than simply their personality. A big example is how exactly they tend to respond when their case is challenged.

In order to facilitate the task of examining each rival from that lens, I decided to write the following template of possible behaviours when the defence tries to point out an inconsistency:

    • "Sudden new evidence" - The prosecution presents some hitherto unknown evidence to contradict the defence's claim.
      • Ex: Edgeworth's updated autopsy report. Ms Green's photograph from another angle.
    • "Prove it" - The prosecution asserts the claim is unproven, or else impossible to prove.
    • "Adjust witness testimony" - At the prosecution's suggestion, some testimony changes to refute or sidestep the defence's claim.
      • Ex: Edgeworth suggests White "admit" to wiretapping. Van Zieks suggests Shamspeare misremembered where he got the tea from.
    • "Your theory has an inconsistency" - The prosecution points out a flaw in the defence's logic, discrediting or destroying their theory. (Without new evidence or testimony)
      • Ex: Van Zieks points out that if the knife had fallen on Ms Green, it should've hit her head, not her back. Barnham points out that it wouldn't make sense for the culprit to turn herself visible at the crime scene.
    • "That's actually to my benefit" - The prosecution takes the new claim and shows how it benefits them.
      • Ex: Blackquill helps the defence prove Hugh didn't see a body before the mock trial, which benefits him. Van Zieks accepts the pipe was poisoned... which incriminates Soseki.
    • "I have an alternate theory" - The prosecution doesn't necessarily accept the claim, and refocuses on how their alternate theory works with the established facts.
      • Ex: Edgeworth and Courtney in I2-2 both have working theories based on the same evidence.
    • "Irrelevant" - The prosecution just disregards the defence's claims as irrelevant to the overall picture.
      • Ex: Edgeworth maintains Melissa Foster's identity was irrelevant to the case. Van Zieks maintains Shamspeare being a gas thief is irrelevant to the case.
    • "No counter" - The prosecution cannot counter, or agrees with the defence.
      • Instances such as Auchi resorting to just insults or "not possible" with no real counter, when the prosecution agrees with the specific point, or when the prosecution is forced to wait for a windfall, where investigation turns up evidence convenient to them.

So my question is: Do you feel there's something missing from the following template to be fully representative of how rivals deal with the defence's arguments?

Feel free to do your own analyses on how each prosecutor behaves. I myself plan to to analyse one trial with each rival (or more where rivals change).

I think checking this may be useful to help discuss the matter of skill. Obviously each case is tailored to always be in the prosecution's favour somehow, and ultimately all prosecutors are forced to act however the case is written to go, but from an in-universe point of view, it'd be interesting to see which prosecutors do their job best, in the sense of logical prowess rather than just saying "prove it" the entire trial.

Should Future Ace Attorney games embrace an episodic release like TellTale?

    Posted: 29 Sep 2021 10:15 AM PDT

The Ace Attorney series has well-established roots as being released in one big package from the early days of the Gameboy Advance. In the last decade, however, Capcom has struggled in adapting the series' business model to a new age of content, leading to the long delay in transitioning the series from outdated handhelds to modern platforms like Steam and poor long-term sale performance of the newer mainline games.

Now Capcom faces a dilemma due to the success of the Trilogy and Chronicles, two grand collections at an eminently affodable price point, something any new, paltry 5-case game entering the market would pale in comparison against. Moreover, budgets and development time are ever-increading, leading to devs having to cut corners due to time constraints, most notably the Clouded Kokoro case in Chronicles being split apart into two separate games.

Therefore, a shift to an episodic release schedule might be a genuinely great idea! A free tutorial case would attract tons of new players and releasing the rest over a set period of time might give ambitious writers like Takumi the chance create larger storylines with pracitcally limitless amounts of cases, where each is given its proper time to breathe.

It would be awesome at stirring up buzz in the fan-community, as we'd be able to discuss each new case as it releases and theorycraft possible roads the story might go down. It would fit with the Ace Attorney forumala well as most players would much rather rank and compare different cases as opposed to different games. A game with a big overarching story and long-winded episodes like Chronicles would already benefit from this type of treatument, in my opinion.

What do you think? Would you enjoy a gradual release like the TellTale games or do you prefer to stick to the traditional 5-case bulk drop?
