If Pheonix Wright got into Smash, do you think "The Tiger" would be a good alt? He could have the cardboard badge in the fake suit, his original clothes, etc.

TGAA2-5 SPOILERS! oh my god Sholmes is amazing

    Posted: 10 Aug 2021 04:43 PM PDT

Is it just me or it is much easier living as a prosecutor in universe than as a defense attorney?

    Posted: 10 Aug 2021 08:26 PM PDT

    1) Prosecutors get paid by the government whether they win or lose. Defense attorneys' payroll depends entirely on their client and a vast majority of defendants in the series are either part of the main cast (like Maya) or people who don't have much money. Then you got someone like Engarde who is swimming with money but I highly doubt Phoenix gets paid cause he loses. None of the playable attorneys are public attorneys so they don't get paid by the government. I guess Ryuunosuke is kind of like that but his defense work is more of a part of what he's supposed to do as a visiting student.

    2) In continuation with point 1, prosecutors live comfortably cause Edgeworth has a nice office and a nice car. Van Zieks has a nice office and must be swimming in money if he can throw wine bottles away casually. Meanwhile, Phoenix settles with a small crowded apartment then in later games, it seems to imply that he lives in the Wright Anything Agency. What used to be a stately Fey and Co Law Offices devolves into the Wright Anything Agency with a lot of junk. Then it seems like a lot of Trucy's earnings go to the agency and is distributed among all the members and I'm pretty sure her earnings can't be THAT high. This makes me wonder how Apollo and Athena are able to get by in DD and SOJ.

    3) Prosecutors always get the upper hand in cases and it's the defense who has to do the bulk of the work in uncovering the truth. The prosecution also doesn't get penalized for withholding important information or using that information to entrap the defense. The annoying part is when the defense points out a contradiction then the prosecution is like "Yeah we knew all along." For all that talk with the prosecution pursuing the truth, the fact that they're withholding important information says that they only care about winning.

    4) Prosecutors losing a case doesn't really destroy their career while the stakes are much higher for the defense and losing a case essentially destroys their career. Not to mention the DC act in SOJ. Phoenix didn't lose his career even if he lost 2-4 but that didn't stop the gallery from jeering at him for being on Engarde's side. 6-2 pissed me off because the defense also has to take the hate directed at Trucy then none of them are apologetic even after you prove her innocence. Meanwhile, prosecutors never get flak for wrong accusation. You could say that prosecutors are just doing their job, but so is the defense yet only the defense seems to get flak.

In summary, the defense attorneys deserve more. They do the bulk in upholding justice and finding the truth yet they don't get the justice they deserve.

One little thing about DGS/AAC that I really liked

    Posted: 10 Aug 2021 04:58 PM PDT

I really loved how the writing and dialogue captures the accents/variations in English of the characters. The localization team really put great effort in doing so given all the variation in nationalities/ethnicities that we have seen. It gives the game a nice touch. I do admit it gets cheesy at some point but overall a very net good.

My clear favorites would be Gina Lestrade's East End English, Megundal/McGilded's Irish English and Barry Caiden's Scottish accent.

It makes me sad that it is not the main game, it is going to be awkward onward to see Naruhodo and Susato not as the regular characters

I'm about half way through JFA, and so far they're pretty good.

I like the idea of essentially being able to perform a mini cross examination at any time.

A small PSA about some TGAAC character names

    Posted: 10 Aug 2021 01:55 PM PDT

Like always, a new Ace Attorney release means a whole bunch of new character names to break down for puns and other wordplay. Chronicles is a little different in some respects, though - there's a small collection of characters spread across Adventures and Resolve who don't use Ace Attorney's usual form of wordplay in one or both of their names, because their names are borrowed straight from Sherlock Holmes stories. They are as follows:

TGAA1 characters - John H. Wilson (formerly Watson), Beppo, Tobias Gregson, Gina Lestrade (just the 'Lestrade' part), Mason Milverton (just the surname again), Herlock Sholmes (surprisingly), Iris Wilson (same as the first character's surname, of course), John and Joan Garrideb (surname again), and Pop Windibank (surname again).

TGAA2 characters - Duncan Ross, Selden, Quinby Altamont (surname), Enoch Drebber, Wilhelm Gottsreich Sigismond Ormstein, and Hugh Boone.

If you know your Sherlock Holmes, you know this witness is gonna grown up into a massive tool.

Just finished GAA1 and enjoyed it, but here's my biggest issue with the game:

    Posted: 10 Aug 2021 09:48 PM PDT

The investigation sections were REALLY not great. There's three main ones: 1-2, 1-4, and 1-5, and I have my issues with each of them.

1-2 is way too handholdy and it never really feels like you get to figure anything out on your own. It all builds up to the first "Logic & Reasoning Spextacular," which is always great fun, but it's super easy. During this chapter it felt way more like I was reading a visual novel with some extra button presses than playing a game, which is an issue I had with the whole game. At first I dismissed my problems with this chapter by saying to myself "Well, I suppose it makes sense to have a tutorial for investigation as well as a tutorial for the trial. I can't wait for the next case, so I can finally play a proper Ace Attorney investigation section!" But then 1-3, was just a trial, and in many ways felt like another tutorial, introducing the summation examination.

The issue with 1-4's investigation was that there was barely any of it there. You don't even investigate the crime scene for pete's sake, it's almost entirely focused on the Garridebs. They're fun characters, but it's over in a flash.

1-5 easily had the best investigation of the game, but it still had the same issues as the others. A decrease of scope and freedom from the previous game, and a sense of being handholded all the way through. It really doesn't help that the game's trials aren't broken up into two or three days like before, either.

The Great Ace Attorney Adventures had a great story and characters, but at times it felt like that came at the expense of the fun of playing an Ace Attorney game. I really hope that the second game improves on some of the ways this game didn't impress me. And to be clear- I still really enjoyed my time with GAA:A, but probably not for exactly the same reasons I enjoyed the original games.

The soundtrack to the original trilogy is so fucking good

    Posted: 10 Aug 2021 09:36 AM PDT

I started The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles yesterday and the biggest thing I miss from the original games is the soundtrack. Not that the new one is bad, it's really good, but it doesn't give me the same feeling

Which of the following ace attorney characters do you think most deserves their own solo game?

    Idea for an AA7 case

    Posted: 10 Aug 2021 05:42 PM PDT

What if one of the cases in AA7 has Nick, or whoever is in charge of cases in this game, defend a lady who's accused of murdering her husband?

Then at the end of the case, we learn that the victim actually tricked the defendant into killing him by poisoning his own medication bottle in advance, and asking her to give him the bottle— effectively putting her fingerprints all over it.

We also learn that the victim planned this scheme as an elaborate way to get back at the defendant for cheating on him, but in reality, he cheated on her first, which shows just how vindictive and unhinged the victim truly was until the end. The judge then rules the case a suicide and the defense team gets a Not Guilty verdict.

    What do you think?
