Last call for new r/AceAttorney banner/icon submissions!

    Posted: 18 Jul 2021 03:15 PM PDT

Posting an update thread to first thank everyone who has submitted their entries for the new subreddit banner and icon (previous thread here) and remind everyone that Monday, July 19th (Pacific timezone) is the last day on which submissions will be accepted. After that, all the submissions will be pooled and a 48-hour public vote to decide on the new banner and icon will be held.

If anyone is still working on submissions or is interested in doing so, you've still got a bit more time. I can afford to be a little bit generous with the cutoff for submissions, but please get them together and submitted as quickly as you can. Reposting the last thread's final details now:

For reference, this is the current banner (resolution 2048 x 230), and this is the current icon (256 x 256). Please try to match the resolution of these images as closely as you can with any submissions.

My personal recommendation is to use the upcoming Chronicles collection as an inspiration for your banner submissions, but like is true of our current banner, feel free to also take inspiration from other games in the series.

Notable things to avoid or consider: All official art for the series is fair game as far as materials to include in a banner or icon submission. Story spoilers should be avoided. No use of fanart unless it's either your own original content or you have the express permission of the original artist to include it. Nothing risqué or NSFW, obviously.

All submissions should either be posted publicly in this thread or sent to me by DM.

What's disturbing is that as of SoJ, Pearl is 18 and I recall seeing comments about how she's "legal" under Youtube playthroughs. Imagine if Dr. Hotti made an appearance in the new games with Pearl. That'd be such a gross interaction

Is It Just Me, or Are the Creators of Pheonix Wright Afraid of Making Their Characters....Old?

    Posted: 18 Jul 2021 11:34 PM PDT

\Before Interacting With This Post, Just Know That I'm Currently on Monsterous Turnabout for DD, So Please No Spoilers For That Game and Beyond!! Also There Will Be Some Spoilers To Prove My Point For AJ, T&T, DD etc.\**

This sounds like a weird, marginal thing to think about, but I just find it odd. Like, being a lawyer at age 24 like Phoenix is a good stretch, but then you have characters becoming lawyers at 15, like Apollo Justice or at 13 like Franziska Von Karma and the whole works. You can argue that it shows how much of a prodigy the characters are, but then there are MULTIPLE child prodigies throughout the series, rendering what used to be special for Franziska in JFA become like- "Oh wow, you were a prosecutor at 13? That's as impressive as graduating American Highschool at 17 or 18!" (it's not, ya know- so...anyways). Is it really a sign of being a prodigy when in Japanifornia (or narratively, to us as the players), it's the norm to take the bar exam and pass it before you finish puberty?

And if it's not for the general "that's odd"-ness of it all, then it's the anticlimactic timeline for me. It's the lack of effect and emotional drive for me. See, when everything happens to characters within the span of maybe like- 1 to 2 years, then not only is their careers as successful attorneys seem kind of "meh", but the relationships characters have with each other seem unconvincing lest the writers really try to sell me their chemistry.

Could you imagine being Pheonix Wright, a famed and renowned attorney by the time Apollo Justice comes around, only to have your badge taken away for 7 whole years! SEVEN WHOLE YEARS! The ratio of years of him being disbarred and having a career as a lawyer is 7:3. It isn't as glorious or dramatic of a downfall, really. and yes, the game makes up for that by compelling storylines, writing, etc, and sure, the other cases he took beyond the ones we see in games probably makes up for all of that, but again, it feels less dramatic the more you dwell on it. But then there are the more emotional/drama-charged aspects of the game, like Diego x Mia.

I suppose the games have all but confirmed that ship to be canon, but in terms of meatiness the games give us for their relationship... and I'm looking at you canon ship supremacists in the circle jerk subreddit... there isn't much to chew on beyond just whatever headcanons and fanfiction you can make up between the two. Which isn't bad! Because hey, I'm no canon supremacist, but the way the writers try to sell the relationship just sort of seems- eh. Okay, so big T&T spoilers ahead: 6 years ago, Mia Fey goes into her first case as a lawyer, with Diego Armando. However, after their client Terry Fawles kills himself once it's revealed that Dhalia is the real murderer, she's so distraught that she doesn't step into another courtroom again until 1, maybe 2 years later? Around that time Diego decides to help her in her investigation to stop Dhalia and ends up getting poisoned by her instead. Now, by the time her second trial comes around where she has to defend Pheonix, Diego is already absent for that reason. Assuming that they were dating after her initial trial, as the game doesn't really specify where their "relationship starts"...it isn't that impressive? There's not too much chemistry going on. The two start dating, "months happen", he's no longer there, and then she dies years later. Now sure the anime has her visit him while He's still comatose in the hospital. But is that really a relationship? It feels more like a dear friend going through unfortunate circumstances. You can argue that since it's not confirmed that they became an item after Turnabout Beginnings they could have became one before, but again...it's in our heads. It's something that we're not seeing in the game.

This brings me to her career. So she's 27 by the time PW:AA starts and first becomes an attorney on her first case by the time she's 24. Obviously, she stops representing clients for an entire year, so her consistent career as an attorney actually begins at 25 and ends when she's 27 and murdered. That's just two years of her being a defense attorney. One year shy of Phoenix, (because the game devs hate seeing girl bosses winning, okurrr?). Again, how is she such a famed attorney when she's only been at it for two years? Maybe she'd be locally known with her face on LA area billboards, but that's about it. And sure there are other cases that make up for that that we just do not see and have to assume, but Miles Edgeworth became a prosecutor at 20 and has since continued even up until DD and beyond. Making his career a lot lengthier and impressive, despite the three cases in PW: AA. (Assuming Investigations makes up for all of that, which I don't mind having spoiled because I probs won't play)

Can you imagine if Mia Fey was actually a seasoned lawyer? Not seasoned like food, I'm talking by the time we play PW: AA, she's in her late 30s going on early 40s? What if she's been defending the innocent for a good decade or two.? Having a more aged-up Mia Fey would not only make up for the cowardly lack of pantsuits but also, in my opinion, make her beginnings in T&T that much deeper. She went through a lot of heartbreak and trauma as a rookie lawyer at 24, but is still going strong. It might even make her relationship with Diego seem that much more believable if you find a way to space the events out.

There's also what the writers are trying to do to Apollo in DD. Again, I'm still not past Monstrous Turnabout, but he's only been a lawyer for a year and Athena only knew him, as far as I'm aware for a matter of months or so. Yet she's already alluding to how much he's "changed". And how she can't help but reminisce about the time before he started wearing someone's coat, whom I can tell is probably Clay who died from getting mildly spoiled. And getting blasted by the explosion. Thena, girl, chill. You've known him for a few months at best. Even if they've made a connection so deep that she feels the need to get this angsty when he decides to take a break from being a lawyer for a minute it doesn't feel as emotionally compelling because again, he's only been a lawyer for a year and his entire life seems to be spiraling out of control from then on. His career seems to be on a speed run right now, trying to rival Pheonix Wright's in AJ. There's no real-time to process this other than the gap in game releases if you played the series as the games get released, which I haven't. It seems comical really. Like, dayum son, you got your former boss Kristoph Gavin thrown into jail once and all of sudden your life is a continuing spiral? lol.

These time constraints, although very nit-picky, show me that the game devs aren't too fond of having older characters who aren't either dead or nuisances. You can make a gag out of this really: Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, where you graduate high school at 12, pass the bar exam at 15, and be lucky you live to see age 36, ya boomer! What are your thoughts?

About Phoenix Wright in Apollo Justice

    Posted: 18 Jul 2021 08:08 PM PDT

I just finished Apollo Justice once again and there is one thing that always impresses me. It is about Phoenix Wright's final case in which he looses his Attorney Badge. When I firstly played it, I had the thought that he would be emotional when it got announced that he needs to give away his Badge.

But no, instead of being really emotional about it, he surprisingly stayed really calm, as if he would have quit his Lawyer Career sooner or later anyways. As if, it was a big relief for him that the Incident happened, since he didn't had to decide by himself to quit the job he was doing for a long time.
