Case Discussion Thread - Case 4-2 - Turnabout Corner

    Posted: 05 Jun 2021 06:06 PM PDT

This case had no idea of the horrors that would ensue in sequels following its introduction of the Magic Panties trick.

Post your first-time reactions and any opinions, complaints, and general thoughts here. What are your thoughts on the case that solidified Apollo's new job at the soon-to-be-renamed Wright Talent Agency?

Apollo's bandage in Dual Destinies never made sense to me

    Posted: 05 Jun 2021 03:00 PM PDT

Specifically the bandage he put over his eye to "turn off" his Perceive ability.

Conceptually I love the idea of Apollo getting overwhelmed by his hyper-perception and needing to find a way to limit it, but I never got why he felt the need to resort to that. While we as an audience learned in 4-4 that Perceiving is a genetic ability Apollo inherited from his mother, Apollo himself never found this out, meaning he should still believe he gets the power from his bracelet. In fact, the rest of his dialogue in Dual Destinies and Spirit of Justice has him cite the bracelet as the source of his power, which while incorrect, makes sense for him to believe. Following that logic, it would have made much more sense for him to just take his bracelet off if he was having trouble controlling his ability.

I understand from a meta perspective that it was simply Rule of Cool and that the writers of Dual Destinies were making a conscious effort to spoil as little as possible from the previous game and as such never discussed the detail of Perceiving outside of its status as a gameplay mechanic (this is surely why Trucy seems to have completely lost the ability after her first game even though she technically has it as well). But it always bugged me that from an in-universe perspective, Apollo had no reason to believe he actually had special eyes when he always attributed the ability to his bracelet.

If he'd taken off his bracelet, one of two things should have happened:

    1. It would no longer draw his focus to his unconscious tension, thus giving him the relief he was looking for.
    2. He would still find himself Perceiving Athena's tells anyway, which would explain why he ended up resorting to the eyepatch, but then he should no longer think that the bracelet is the source of his ability.

Obviously neither happened, and while I get why the writers did what they did, it doesn't really make sense from a character perspective. That said, I haven't played Dual Destinies since it first came out, and it's been even longer since I've replayed AJ:AA so am I forgetting something that clears it up?

Which case has the best investigations?

    Posted: 05 Jun 2021 07:57 PM PDT

For me. It's 3-5, because of how great the characters are, the banter, the memes you can get from this, there's so many things good about the investigations in 3-5. 3-5 is a masterpiece that's all I can say

Finished Dual Destinies and Apollo needed some more impactful moments during the last two cases

    Posted: 06 Jun 2021 12:23 AM PDT

I enjoyed the game but Apollo's character arc in The Cosmic Turnabout and Turnabout for Tomorrow needed a few more moments to make it feel complete. Like have him and Clay interact as a prologue to the case where they reminisce on their friendship and discuss HAT-2. Then after Clay's murder we see him mourn the loss of his best friend and head to the detention center to see Solomon for answers then agreeing to defend him. Along having a segment where you play as him on his personal investigation at the space center and meeting with Aura to get more info on the HAT-1 miracle and bond over losing someone special to potentially the same person, also as a result fleshing out Aura as a character and seeing the future motivations for her actions later on. These are just some moments that I think would've made his arc feel less like an afterthought.

I'm curious, what do y'all think? Any other moments you would've added? I wanna know what some of you guys have in mind on this topic.
