What do you want Apollo's next tragic backstory to be?

An alien? A time traveler? Maybe he never existed in the first place? The possibilities are endless!

    In Honor of Trucy

    Posted: 09 May 2021 03:37 PM PDT

Following yesterday's shocking revelation that Trucy has been dead ever since the ending of AJ, I'd like to take a moment to remember her life and explain why she's personally my favorite AA character. As a result, I'm only talking about AJ Trucy, because, as nice as 6-2 Trucy is, she's dead after 4-4. (To be extra clear, I'm joking. I just want to talk about AJ Trucy, because she isn't discussed much.)

People sometimes call Trucy naive and innocent, but I don't think she is at all. She knows everything she's doing, and that leads to one of my favorite things about her: she's incredibly smart. In fact, Phoenix isn't exaggerating when he calls her a genius.

Apollo gets through problems by thinking carefully and rationally, but Trucy is on another level. She often has things figured out before Apollo, the licensed, adult lawyer has. She single-handedly saves Wocky's case, and even as Apollo improves and doesn't need support anymore, she provides helpful advice during trials. She tends to play around more during investigations, but still has important insight and helps keep Apollo focused.

In general, I appreciate how Trucy's skills are shown in an understated way rather than told. Trucy's a child prodigy, but she doesn't brag about it. In fact, Trucy tries hard to boost Apollo's low self-esteem, emphasizing that she believes in him (even when she probably doesn't, at first) and attributing Apollo's victories to his effort alone, leaving out her own major role.

On that subject, Trucy, along with her father, is a master manipulator. When Apollo first comes to the agency, she pretends not to remember him from Phoenix's trial, where she handed him forged evidence, and then she guilt trips him into taking the job. "Polly" seems like an affectionate nickname, and it did gradually become one, but when she came up with it in the hospital, its only purpose was manipulation.

Again, Trucy is nowhere near as innocent as she seems. On one level, she's fully aware of how uncomfortable her Magic Panties are (something DD and SoJ unfortunately forgot), and she uses them to throw Apollo off-balance. On a deeper level, if the situation calls for it, Trucy isn't afraid to break rules, even laws. It's not explicitly stated, but logically, the only one who had the opportunity to forge the bloody ace was Trucy herself, likely at Phoenix's request, and Phoenix later took responsibility for it to cover for Trucy. She stops Wocky's trial with a fake kidnapping because she doesn't want the Kitakis to hurt Apollo, and, among other examples, she helps Phoenix cheat at poker. Trucy's not just not innocent, she's actively morally gray.

This plays into her dynamic with Apollo, which is my favorite in the whole series (though I can't speak for Ryuu and Susato yet). Whereas Apollo strictly follows rules, Trucy is willing to break them if she needs to, leading to contrasting ideologies towards problem solving, and importantly, one isn't presented as better than the other. Whereas Apollo is insecure and wants to be treated with respect, Trucy is collected, witty, and supports Apollo while not being afraid to bring his ego down when it's getting too big. Whereas Trucy is extroverted but guarded and only shows her pain through subtle cues, Apollo is straightforward, honest, and brash, and gives Trucy the support she needs as she gradually opens up to him. Lastly, they're both extremely professional, but in different ways.

I think my favorite part of her dynamic with Apollo is that they're both mentors for each other. Trucy is technically Apollo's boss, and while she doesn't abuse that position, it ensures an equal relationship, despite the age gap. They work together rather than one being in charge and the other following along, with both respecting and supporting the other.

This is exemplified by how they meet: they just meet, at a job interview one day. There's no dramatic plot event involved. For comparison, think about how Maya meets Phoenix in 1-2, as the suspect for her sister's murder. There's an immediate and forceful connection. Of course, one way isn't "better" than the other, but I appreciate the mundane way that Apollo and Trucy meet. They get to know each other gradually and naturally, and it makes their relationship more impactful. When Apollo is ready to fight gangsters after barely a day of knowing Trucy and cries when he finds her safe, it's not because of any external reason, it's because he cares about her as a person. It's one of the reasons Apollo and Trucy's friendship is my favorite in the series. It feels extremely genuine and grounded, and all of it, from the beginning until Trucy calling Apollo her "big-little brother" in the end, feels earned.

There are a lot of things I haven't said, so I may go into greater detail and organized analysis in a potential future post. For now, I'll end my remarks honoring Trucy's life.

    May she rest in peace.

Just finished SoJ, now to Ramble

    Posted: 09 May 2021 07:27 PM PDT

So with The Great Ace Attorney coming to the west I decided to finally go back and beat SoJ and just kind of want to ramble. I bought Spirit of Justice day one, and haven't beaten it till today. IDK why really cause now that I've beaten it, I really liked it. I've played the original trilogy but not AJ or DD, but I've seen lets plays of those.

Overall I just suddenly got super invested in the rest of cases I had left and the story. I really like the Divination Sceances, I'll be kind of sad since they can't really come back unless we go back to Khura'in in future games.

I though Apollo's story was pretty interesting overall and made me feel some genuine emotion and shock over what happens in the story.

What I was surprised about was how divided people are on this game, and the last few games in general. I do agree with some of the games faults. Nahyuta and the final villain aren't too interesting on their own but I was pretty engrossed in the overall plot around them.

I've been out of the Ace Attorney loop for awhile, but now this game has me right back to a series I've really enjoyed so it'll now have a place in my heart. Game has its flaws but I hope people can soften up about it in the future.

Super excited for TGAAC, and maybe Capcom will finally get around to AA7 someday.

    *THE KIDNAPPED TURNABOUT* First thoughts

    Posted: 09 May 2021 02:22 PM PDT

I loved it, every single part of it. All of the characters were well written, and I enjoy all of the cameos. The idea of it taking part on a kidnap makes It interesting, like 3-2 dos with the thief theme. The idea of bringing the blue badger back was hilarious, and all the lore he has. Lately I will post my full opinion on this turnabout.
