The trilogy has surprising and unexpected accuracy in the portrayal of its biggest psychopath

    Posted: 07 Mar 2021 05:40 AM PST

A common trope in the way psychopaths and sociopaths are portrayed in movies/TV is being highly intelligent with nonexistent morals. This is not accurate. People who suffer from ASPD are actually almost always of below-average intelligence. It is true that they lie and manipulate people, but it's not because they're cunning, it's because their lack of empathy makes it difficult to relate to others, so they lie about things that normal people don't, which makes people more likely to believe them.

Enter Dahlia. Her plans are remarkably stupid and all-around poorly thought out. She is not particularly savvy, often acting on impulse. The only reason she got away with what she did for so long is because everyone in her social circle and in law enforcement kept dropping the ball, repeatedly, by chance, in a way that just so happened to benefit her, also by chance. This is much more accurate to how actual psychopaths who commit crime behave. They're not functional in society which means they're not very good at outsmarting it either.

    Joe Darke makes no sense

    Posted: 07 Mar 2021 11:08 AM PST

The Ace attorney games have some great stories and characters within them, that explore interesting themes and make for a very good overall game. But in creating the cases to be as engaging and complex as possible Shu Takumi often fell into the trap of taking logic leaps to make a case's story happen even though a deeper examination of that story beyond a first playthrough can make on eeasily notice the holes

The best example of this is Misty Fey. Misty is not a character. She is a flat out plot device whose actions make no sense. This once again is something I realized in a replay. But one character that never made an ounce of sense to me is Joe Darke

Let's look at his story. He is supposed to be a business man that killed someone with his car by accident and then kept killing witnesses with a situation that got worse and worse.

The first problem here is that he didn't have to kill anyone else. Had he reported the accident , even if the driver did end up dying regardless he would have gotten an involuntary manslaughter charge. With a good lawyer who he definately could afford, he could have gotten off with just some monetary sentence

But let's say he panicked and killed the first witness before realizing what he did and then it was too late. How did the police connect the murders? I suppose that he disposed of the bodies and that since he didn't leave decisive evidence trail he wasn't foolish enough to dispose them all at the same place.

So how did they conclude the same person killed all of them even if they found the bodies? And how did they connect the murders to him if they didn't have enough evidence to convict him? They were hunting him for half a year so they must have had something pointing to him

Finally the biggest plot hole is the whole confession/questioning thing. Lana says that they called him in for questioning. The story makes sense there. He was their prime suspect. They called him in for questioning. He panicked and found his chance to leave. And everything else leading to gant's actions took place

But then Gumshoe says he actually came in on his own to confess. And everything crumbles like a deck of cards. For starters why would he go in the trouble to kill five people to cover his crime to then confess? Let's say that he felt guilty(which still seems unlikely since gumshoe describes him as an animal). If he did and was ready to confess then why the fuck did he escape and take a hostage?

And since he was shown to be about to confess(therfore one that should be able to crack after interogations even if he had second thoughts about the confession) why did Gant decide that the only way to convict him was to kill his friend in cold blood?

The case itself is beautiful and it has the best ace attorney villain. But the backstory of it is poorly constructed to make it work. Either that or the translators severely fucked up. I'm just sad it was never adapted to the anime because I would love to see a third person interpretation of it

If Ace Attorney Investigations 2 were ever released outside of Japan, would you want it to be sold on it's own, in an AAI duology bundle like DGS, or both so you can choose which?

Are there problems with Case 4-4?

    Posted: 07 Mar 2021 09:48 PM PST

This fic makes many good points about how the trial run for the MASON system was just so biased: https://www.fanfiction.net/s/12713191/4/Everything-Wrong-With-Apollo-Justice-Ace-Attorney

    To wit (as per tvtropes):

The most fundamental problem is that the person responsible for the creation of the Jurist System, Phoenix Wright, has a multifaceted personal stake in the first case handled by it — it's made abundantly clear that he introduced the new system for the specific purpose of altering the outcome. He actively gathers evidence in support of the defense, who technically works for him. A related case resulted in the loss of his job and an orphaned child left in his care. Then, in another related case, he was framed for murder by a person he considered a friend. This same person gives instructions and interprets the law for the jury.

Moreover, the MASON System itself (the interface by which the jurors participate in the trial) also skews favor towards the desired outcome by introducing facts and evidence that are presented only within the MASON System, meaning it was hand-chosen by the individual who designed it. The MASON System presents situations and information that aren't a part of the trial but still crucial towards coming to the verdict. Everything contained within it is true, yes, but it's unquestionably partial in nature. How would anyone know for sure under these circumstances? A proper trial would need testimony from the other side.

Part of me now wants an alternate case 4-4 where at the last minute, the system is denied use for the exact reasons the fic notes, and Phoenix panics...while Apollo and Trucy then prove they didn't need it. I mean such a thing isn't necessary for a jurist panel right?
