I just finished the Ace Attorny Trilogy for the first time!

That was so epic! One of the best games I've ever played. It was awesome just to kick back, relax and enjoy the ride. The cases were sometimes convoluted, and I had to look up one part because I got stuck, but that music makes it all worth it. That final case was so intense! I cant wait for the rest of the series to port to PC, I wanna know what happens when Iris gets out of jail!

    Godot/Diego Armando

Dahlia and Kristoph could have been applied here, because they committed 2 murders each, and each one was solved individually in each case, but they WERE guilty in the cases they've debuted in,so...No.

Was Godot's infamous line towards Franziska a mistranslation?

    Posted: 23 Jan 2021 03:39 PM PST

We all know Godot's infamous line, "Know your role, and shut your mouth. I can't stand women like you." However, I've heard a few places that it really a mistranslation, as apparently the Japanese version he says "people like you." Is this true?

So You've heard of the Narumitsu bible? What about a Franmaya one?

    Posted: 23 Jan 2021 11:43 PM PST

So There's a narumitsu bible on ao3 , I was thinking about making a Franmaya one. It obviously won't be as long as the nrmts one, due to the fact that neither Maya nor Franziska are main characters but it could be done. Do you guys have any suggestions for it?

A question about soj on Android + me bitching about dd on android

    Posted: 23 Jan 2021 08:39 PM PST

I should preface this by saying I've played apollo justice, investigations, and dual destinies on Android, and dd is the only one with these problems. During my time playing dd, I constantly ran into 2 incredibly annoying glitches.

    1. Every time I loaded up the game, my phones volume became muted

    2. Whenever an anime cutscene was meant to play, the screen would just go black, requiring me to reset the app to view the cutscene, resulting in me losing considerable amounts of progress

My question is, does spirit of justice on Android also suffer from these glitches? Bc if so, I'll just play it on the 3ds

My first time playing through Dual Destinies. Did anybody else find the Monstrous Turnabout chapter excruciatingly long and tedious?

    Posted: 23 Jan 2021 02:29 PM PST

I'm currently still in it... I don't know if I'm the problem and simply not "feeling" this case but man... It's never-ending... The plot, the characters, the dialogue... I don't know... There's something about it. To me this whole case is almost like a big chore. Can't wait to put it behind me.

    Did anyone else feel this?

Calculating the true length of Spirit of Justice with the power of MATH.

    Posted: 24 Jan 2021 12:02 AM PST

So, it seems the "general" consensus is that Spirit of Justice is, without question, the longest Ace Attorney game. This is agreed upon by more or less everyone based on the amount of time it takes to play it. One look at the tier chart of play time for all cases shows that, not only is the final case the longest in the franchise by an immense margin at 14 hours, but other cases are exceptionally long as well, with Rite of Turnabout being longer than most final cases.

The thing is, though, is that Ace Attorney is still, at the end of the day, a Visual Novel, "games" which are predominately just clicking through text. How long it individually takes to get through something is meaningless insofar as approximating length, but we do have something more objective, the amount of text in the game itself.

So that's what I did. I decided to, properly, ascertain the actual length of Spirit of Justice, not based on the time it took to play it, but how much text was actually in the game.

The answer was...surprising, to say the least.

    ~~

    First off, my calculus.

In order to figure out long AA6 really is, I took the route of going through the first case via the Slyzer playthrough, and manually counting each text in the case. This came with a number of caveats, namely me not counting text that was automatic (such a gallery jeering) and merely looking through each of the proper text lines the player clicked through. In order to make sure my calculus wasn't too imprecise, I split the case in half, so to check the exact lengths of both sides. Sure enough the numbers were more or less even on both sides.

From there, I divided the total line count I had gotten with the amount of minutes for Slyzer's playthroughs of each case, leading to me getting the rough average lines per minute total of the game, which I found to be 11. From there, it was as simple as counting out the total times of each case, and overviewing the results.

    Play Time Line Count
    The Foreign Turnabout 3:30:08 2.3k
    The Magical Turnabout 6:16:36 4.1k
The Rite of Turnabout 8:42:56 5.7K
    Turnabout Storyteller 3:52:37 2.5k
    Turnabout Revolution Part 1 5:04:50 3.3k
    Turnabout Revolution Part 2 9:35:10 6.3k
    Total 37:02:17 24.4k

If you think some of those numbers don't add up 100%, that's just a result of rounding. Determining the numbers otherwise would probably utter murder. That's how Rite and Revo 2 can be both about the same length despite being nearly an hour apart.

Any...yeah. You might notice some...interesting specifics in those numbers. Such as the sheer length of Rite as case, or how Storyteller compares with the first case. However, none of it really means much of anything...until you compare it to another game.

Apollo Justice is known for being one of the shortest games in the franchise. The final case is over an hour shorter than most others in the franchise, the first case is one of just four to not break two hours, and overall it's a very small game in terms of feel. However, running the same test with Turnabout Trump, I found that the games average line by minute ratio was about 19...and this lead me to these very interesting results.

    Play Time Line Count
    Turnabout Trump 1:50:15 2.1k
    Turnabout Corner 3:46:41 4.2k
    Turnabout Serenade 4:24:44 5.0k
    Turnabout Succession 5:36:11 6.3k
    Total 15:37:51 17.7k

You might see...quite a lot to look at, from just a simple analysis.

For one thing, yes, your eyes are not deceiving you, Turnabout Corner is longer than Magical, if just by a sliver, despite the latter being two and half hours longer to actually play. This is consistent across the board, and perhaps most apparent with Succesion. While the case is second to Goodbyes as the shortest final case in the franchise, it is almost the exact same insofar in text length as Revolution Part 2, which is nearly the length in play time as the notoriously long Rise from the Ash's. SoJ in total is less than 7k in line total longer than one of the shortest AA games, but in terms of time spent being played it's almost exactly double the length.

The reason for this seemingly bizarre difference in technical size is fairly easy, it's the matter of speed. The 3DS games, but especially Spirit of Justice, are massive slower in every way from their DS counterparts. Characters are very consistently given long, drawn out animations (a few characters in SoJ have animations which last an upwards of ten seconds). The zoom-outs to the gallery are now drawn out panning shots instead of quick cut-away's. A number of full "cutscenes" play which remove dialogue control from the player, so something that could be read in 30 seconds instead plays out over the course of minutes.

Most interesting, though, is the text speed. The 3DS games, in order to accommodate the far more elaborate animations, includes massively slowed text speed for boxes. In earlier games, what took maybe a second for the box to fill instead takes several, something which was seemingly minor takes on a very new context when every line is like this. "Death of a thousand cuts" as they were.

In conclusion, no, Spirit of Justice is not actually the longest game in the franchise in terms of script length (that honour probably goes to Investigations 2). It just plays as the longest due to the vastly slower game speed.

While I won't make any judgements regarding the game per say, I hope these calculations prove useful to future discussions regarding the franchise.

Alright I’ve had this dream two times now and I think I might as well share it, it’s a terrible nightmare but it might not be as frightening in text form.

    Posted: 23 Jan 2021 07:53 AM PST

Imma start with today's version since it's the more complete one. So you would play as apollo in this case and it starts out by you going into a parking lot, and on a random corner you find a vent, then the vent dispenses a body and then a narrator like voice (It's the voice from Monster Seeking Monster if anyone ever played that) then says the name of the person's body:"Franziska" it looks indeed like Franziska's body, then the vent dispenses another body:"Edgeworth" it says looks like Edgeworth's body, what's going on? It goes on to dispense another body "Edgeworth", this one look like Gregory Edgeworth's body, it goes on to dispense another body "Edgeworth" and then another "Edgeworth", blood is flying everywhere and then there's the last body, this time the narrator doesn't say anything but a witch starts to laugh. Apollo looks terrified for his life(At which point I am too), he has never seen so much blood in one place before, he needs to act quick, he finds a suspicious looking rope, he then proceeds to pull it down with the help of his assistant (Let's just assume it was Trucy) and a suspicious looking trap door opens up on the ceiling and a blue-ish screen pops up, you have to input a code in 10 seconds, if you input incorrectly or not input at all you get jumpscared (Yes, I got jumpscared in my own dream), at that point the game asks you if you wish to give up or not, if you give up you also get jumpscared and game-overed. I never got the right code once. Anyways that is my nightmare that occurred twice now, first one wasn't much detailed but it was the same thing. This thing terrifies me and I thought it was interesting enough to share.
