Why isn't Ema Skye the assistant in AAI?

    Posted: 06 Jan 2021 04:20 PM PST

I recently finished the trilogy and about to start the AAI games, so this isn't a dig on Kay because I don't know much about her or AAI.

But wtf. What a missed opportunity. This is going to be way too long but I'm saddled with unnecessary feelings about this (lol) and need to get this out.

No, I defff don't ship them because that's gross. I just think she would have had a unique dynamic with Edgeworth.

They would have made a badass investigation team. Both have an analytical approach and look for the truth, whether it's with Ema's scientific method or Miles' logical deduction. But she'd still be a foil to his stuffy, gloomy attitude with her endless optimism and energy.

Not only that, but their backstories have a lot in common in a way that it creates... so many great opportunities for character development for both of them.

Last week I made a post pointing out the parallels between DL-6 and SL-9 are and how her traumatic experience is quite similar to Edgeworth's; the main difference being Ema didn't internalize the guilt from Neil's death until it was brought up in the trial. I thought it was interesting how differently they handled the trauma; Ema had a supportive older sister looking out for her and she seems to have done a good job at processing it and moving on. Edgey on the other hand, well... having an abusive stepfamily demanding perfection didn't help, and he was alone in a miserable headspace for a long time until Phoenix absolved him of his guilt. It suddenly makes a lot of sense why Ema was so obsessed with the trial and helping Lana -- she was literally the only one looking out for this girl after their parents died, and Ema could have easily turned out as damaged as Edgey without Lana's help.

Something that could have added more depth to her character would be if they explored how her PTSD affects her, like what we clearly see with Edgeworth. The image she saw during that flash of lightning is still burned into her head just like the scream Miles heard in the elevator, but while we explicitly learn about Miles' PTSD we only get subtle hints about Ema's. The signs are there -- she was too afraid to speak about it for a while, and she's still uneasy when seeing the blue badger. I also think her fangirling over Edgeworth (despite him being the "enemy" leading the prosecution against Lana!) is another subconscious response to SL-9. To Ema, he left an impression on her as the hero that got Joe Darke convicted when she was too terrified to testify against the man who tried to kill her. Her admiration goes way deeper than a dumb teenage crush, but it would have been nice to see that admiration morph into something more like a mentor/mentee relationship.

She is a character with so much potential for greater depth -- like, what if we find out that Ema's upbeat, extroverted attitude originated as a defense mechanism to cope with her trauma? Given that she's probably the only one in the trilogy that can begin to understand Edgey's PTSD since she went something incredibly similar at a young age, they could relate to each other in a way that makes sense and wouldn't feel forced. I know Edgeworth isn't the type to open up about his feelings, but he might talk to her about DL-6 if something comes up in a case that causes Ema's trauma to resurface, to show that she isn't alone -- kind of like how Edgeworth helped Phoenix out during his moral crisis in 2-4. Just think of all the feelsy moments that could come out of them having a strong platonic bond!

For those that have played AAI and AAI2, do you agree or disagree? Maybe I'll change my mind when I meet Kay but guhhh I would have loved to see Ema and Miles as a badass investigation team in the name of Truth and Science!

Dai Gyakuten Saiban (The Great Ace Attorney) Review.

    Posted: 06 Jan 2021 07:35 PM PST

I did share my brief thoughts on chapters 1 through 4, https://www.reddit.com/r/AceAttorney/comments/karj8c/my_brief_thoughts_over_the_final_chapters_of/. Here I will re-do that over all of the cases. My opinions have changed a bit.

    Presentation: (9/10)

    • The game looks amazing. The 3D character sprites look so much more likely. The game uses 3D so much better than the mainline 3D games. (Not to say that the 3D in the mainline games were bad or anything.) I praised PLvsAA for its 3D but I would say that this surpasses that game.
    • The UI is decent.
    • My opinion has changed on the music from before. The music is overall great. There were some real bangers here. Not every track is memorable but I appreciate the orchestral/symphonic music across the game. Favorites include: (Asougi theme, Cross examinations (moderato, allegro), Iris Watson theme, Susato theme, investigation opening, sherlock home theme, OLD BAILEY, Reasoning battle start, and deduction theme. Some of these would go in my Top 10 favorite Ace Attorney Themes.

    Gameplay: (8/10)

    • It's Ace Attorney but more. In addition to the current Ace attorney mechanics, it includes mob cross-examination, closing argument, and great deductions.
    • Closing Argument is unique and it's fun because of the juries. I like all of the jury members. They have so much personality to them. Clashing Statement is an interesting concept which I used successfully in this game.
    • The Great Deduction is amazing too. While the controls could be better, it's still fun and unique fixing, sherlock holmes dumb theories into theories that make sense.
    • They brought back Mob Cross-Examination from Profesor Layton vs Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney. Though for some reason, they got rid of the feature where you contradict someone's statement with another. (Maybe that feature went to the closing arguments instead). It's decent. There are times where it's less about finding contradictions within the initial statements rather than press everything to get reactions. Doing that over and over the game can drag out cases.

    Characters: (7/10)

    • The characters range from (Love to Like to Meh). That's not bad for an Ace Attorney game. I don't think there was a character I hated.
    • Love: Iris, Sherlock, Naruhodo, Asougi, Waghai
    • Like: Egg Benedict, Van Zeiks, Gina, Most of the unnamed Jurors, Satoru,
    • Meh: Susato, Inspector, Souseki, Hatch, Everyone else

    Story: (6/10)

    • The story isn't super original nor all that complex (though that may change in DGS 2). Main Story: Naruhodo, learns to be a defense attorney in 1800s Britain. There's racism too. The story was endearing and had some fun moments. (7/10) What brings down the slight story is the cases.
    • Case 1- Decently written case but I'm so tired of the case trying to be so dark and edgy. (6/10)
    • Case 2- A fun (except not really) mystery, with a complete gameplay overhaul making it a breath of fresh air. Though I have some mixed feelings about the ending. (7/10)
    • Case 3- I should give this case a bit more credit than on my original post. It does bring some mystery elements and plays well within the overarching narrative I can appreciate but murder itself is just ok. (5.5/10)
    • Case 4- Lack Luster Mystery that tries to be deep when it's just dumb. It's not bad per see but just weak. (4/10)
    • Case 5- A good finale case with character development, good characters, and interesting ending mysteries. (7/10)
    • The cases themselves range from good to mediocre which a bit disappointing considering how people hype up this game. There's wasn't a case I felt was amazing like Turnabout Trump, Bridge to The Turnabout, Turnabout Revolution, Turnabout Target, Farewell My Turnabout, Turnabout Reclaimed. (These are my personal favorites). That was what I was expecting at least one case to be. Case 2 and Case 5 could maybe make my Top 20 or Top 25 but definitely not my Top 15.
    • I understand the time period of the setting but murder designs leave more to be desired. A case can have a good story to it but the case design is also important. Case Design is what makes a case fun or interesting to solve. In terms of Case Design: Case 2 was good, Case 1 and 5 was alright, Case 3 and 4 was eh.

    Final Rating: 30/40 (7.5/10)

Conclusion: It's a good game that everyone who likes Ace Attorney should check out. I disagree with the masses that this is some extraordinary 10/10 game. Then again, this game would be up there as one of the best Ace Attorney games by proxy rather than being amazing. Maybe the overhype nature of the game caused my expectation to be a bit too high here.

Question for a fan-trial/fanfiction because I'm indecisive. (Spoilers for AJ:AA)

    Posted: 06 Jan 2021 07:12 PM PST

So, basically I'm writing a fanfiction that's post SoJ and I can't decide whether or not Edgeworth or a token Payne should be the prosecutor for this thing. The issue lies in the fact that this is a final appeal for Kristoph Gavin (AJ:AA Spoilers) and while it's the first case in the five, I feel a chief prosecutor would be the guy to handle a final appeal. Thoughts?

Shadi Smith was a Gramarye (Parody of John Wayne was a Nazi)

    Posted: 06 Jan 2021 08:22 PM PST

    Shadi Smith was a Gramarye!

He liked to cheat on cards

He lost his streak to Phoenix, the boy

The first time since he had court

Sure, he would one-up his brother

Sure, he wouldn't shoot up his pop

Sure, he would estrange his daughter at all

Sure, he didn't want to cushion a fall

    He was a Gramarye

    But he's not anymore

    He was a Gramarye

    But life settled the score

    He was a Gramarye

    But he's not anymore

    He was a Gramarye

Zac Gram nearly shot up his wife

Took her eyes, now she's hiding her life

Fled from court at the dark age of law

Avenged by a son he didn't hear of before

    He was a Gramarye

    But not anymore

    He was a Gramarye

    Life settled the score

    He was a Gramarye

    But not anymore

    He was a Gramarye

Zac Gram hid for seven years

No more time for the magic cheers

Played his cards, all the cards

Now he's no magician of ours!

    You were a Gramarye

    But not anymore

    You were a Gramarye

    Life settled the score

    You were a Gramarye

    But not anymore

    You were a Gramarye

Not a good husband or a good dad

No more better than the Kristof lad

As much power hungry as Valant Gram

Makes me glad I'm not in magical land

Left your daughter to an Ace at Law

    Now he's a dad forevermore

Well Zac, we hate Kristof too

But we all know what we're saying to you

    You were a Gramarye

    But not anymore

    You were a Gramarye

    Death settled the score

    You were a Gramarye

    But not anymore

    You were a Gramarye

    Death settled the score

    You're DEAD, DEAD, DEAD!

Should phoenix Wright ace attorney dual destinies/ spirit of justice be renamed to just ace attorney dual destinies/spirit of justice

    Posted: 06 Jan 2021 07:18 PM PST

In my opinion yes because the most recent ace attorney games have been focused on Athena, apollo and phoenix which makes it quite inaccurate to revolve the name of the game around one of the 3 main protaginists
