Law students streaming Case 5 of Ace Attorney

    Posted: 21 Aug 2020 06:21 PM PDT

Hello again. Today we are continuing Case 5 of the first game. We are 3 (sometimes 4!) law students entering our 3rd year of law school from California who are currently actively practicing in the field of Criminal Law as both defense and prosecution. As we play through the game we're gonna comment on some of the things in the game that are different than and the same as the actual practice of criminal law, so feel free to drop by and ask some questions (or lurk) if you're interested in learning something about the system, or if you just want to just come have some fun shitposting in the chat.

    I finally finished AA1!

    Posted: 21 Aug 2020 01:57 PM PDT

I don't think I would have finished the game without this site: http://mobile.uhs-hints.com/uhsweb/phoenix-wright

It was a trip too. I fly enjoyed the game despise a few issues I have with it. The characters are memorable and likeable, the music was excellent and also memorable. The dialogue was funny at times, and trials were challenging. It's a pretty great game.

The problems I have with it is not knowing what to do or where to do at times. You can get lost and stomped at a few trials that makes you have to think hard to get show the correct evidence. I pretty much Press almost all of the parts of the witness's testimonies, and there were some evidence that you know it's right, but the game counts it wrong until a bit later. Parts of the game where you have to directly point at what you need to show (the locker with the light lit up screwed me over case I was pointing at the locker, not the light). 1-5 did dragged too long for me despite it's good story.

I honestly think that without that site, I wouldn't like the game. I almost gave up playing it until I found that site. Took me 30 hours to beat this game and honestly, I felt exhausted. I took a nearly 4 year break, stopped at the second chapter of 1-5, and came back, finishing it.

One down, 10 more games to go. Lol

Some gripes with the first game

    Posted: 21 Aug 2020 05:28 PM PDT

I just finished the first game (first 4 cases, haven't gotten the motivation to do the 5th one yet) and I wasn't too fond of it. The writing is definitely great and the characters were very well written, but there are some details that really bother me. I hope someone can help me clear this up because it seriously took away my enjoyment of the game. I also want to know if it gets better in the 2nd and 3rd games.

    • In case 1, did no one bother to check the fingerprints on the statue-clock? Was the court seriously going to accuse a man of murder based on random witness testimony and disregard actual physical evidence?

    • In case 2, why the hell did Redd White commit the murder himself anyway? If he is supposedly so important, he must be able to order some goons to do the deed for him. It also makes no sense that he is suddenly so afraid of some random list of people. If he is so influential as the game claims he should be able to silent the press no problem. Also did Maya seriously get over her sister's death that quickly? A close friend of mine lost her sister at around the same age and she was severly depressed for several months. This feels insultingly unrealistic.

    • In case 3, did the court suddenly suspect Dee Vasquez just because she mistook Hammer and Powers? Now we know that she is guilty, but what if she was innocent and was only misremembering? Not to mention if Dee Vasquez had the opportunity commit the murder, then so was Sal and every other people at the trailer that day, and thus they all should be equally suspected as well.

    • Why on earth are witness testimonies treated as absolute facts here? We know that human's brain is not reliable and it makes up false memory all the time! I don't like how every witness is expected to have photographic memory or else they would be suspected as conspiring with the murder. Not to mention intentional lie. This gets worse in the 4th case, when Edgeworth testifies about an event that happened 15 YEARS AGO. His memory should be treated as mere nonsense garbage by this point.

    • If we are going to treat witness testimonies seriously, at least have multiple witnesses. One single person shouldn't be able to come up and say "I saw this guy did it" and has the claim accepted by the court.

    • The whole Mia's spirit breaks my brain. I guess no point in being distressed over someone's death then, because they will be retconned back by some nonsense spiritual stuff.

    • Phoenix's only purpose should be getting his defendant a not guilty verdict or lessen the verdict. His role is NOT to find the real culprit. The judge giving him "homework" to investigate on the true culprit of the case makes no sense. That should be the police's job.

    • What kind of prosecutor ranking system that judge a prosecutor based on how many guilty verdicts they manage to get?

    • Fourth case, there is no way the court should be able to give Edgeworth a guilty verdict over some nightmares he has. And even if Edgeworth did accidentally kill his father, so what? He was freaking 9 at the time and was placed under high stress situation. There is no way he would get jail time over this, yet everyone treats it like it's such a big deal. Phoenix being able to corner von Karma is ludicrous, he shouldn't have been able to request for a surgery on someone JUST because of some wild ungrounded claim he made.

I have some more but that's the major ones. Would appreciate people explaining where I'm wrong because I heard this series is really great and I really want to enjoy it.

Something in 5-5 that retroactively makes 4-4 confusing (DD/AJAA spoilers)

    Posted: 21 Aug 2020 06:51 AM PDT

In 5-5, Pearl explains that in contrast to red Psyche-Locks which represent a secret someone is intentionally not revealing, black Psyche-Locks represent a secret deep within someone's heart that they aren't consciously aware of.

How do we reconcile this with Kristoph Gavin's psyche-locks in 4-4? Gavin was obviously keeping things closely to himself. He's not the kind of man to have a repressed secret.
