Ha, Zelda reference... also, why did they make it take place in the US in the English translation? Seems kind of dumb to me...

Phoenix and Maya - I love their relationship. My favorite thing is that he humors her for the most part.

    Thoughts on Apollo's storyline

    Posted: 16 Jul 2020 01:05 PM PDT

So I just finished playing the entire AA series and I was really disappointed with how they left Apollo's story. I want to start out by saying I don't hate DD and SOJ but I do believe that they are weaker than the original trilogy. There were some cases that I did really like even the Turnabout Revolution for all its flaws. Once finishing SOJ I was left feeling happy and somewhat satisfied with the ending however, upon further thought I became increasingly disappointed with the way they handled Apollo's storyline for the entire series.

Here are my major complaints about Apollo's storyline

    1. He has like three different backstories; this results in his character having an unclear motive overall and makes it difficult to track his character development.
    2. Each of his backstories are good but not flushed out. I believe that each one of Apollo's backstories are solid but because they don't develop over the course of three games like Phoneix it makes Apollo's storyline weak.
    3. Turnabout Revolutions would have worked if they had simply established this in the previous games. Apart of what makes Apollo's story from the beginning of AJ through Magical Turnabout good is that Apollo's character development is clear. They establish that Apollo has issues with father figures in his life which is explored through his relationship with phoenix.
    4. Apollo's relationship with Phoenix and Trucy are so good only to have them be thrown away. From the beginning of AJ the main story focused on his relationships between Wright and Trucy. It is fulfilling to see Apollo open up and become closer to both of them.
    5. The main reason why Apollo's ending feels so unsatisfying is that his story was focused on the present, not the past. What makes the moments where Wright tells Apollo that he believes in him as an attorney work well is because we have seen their relationship grow over the course of his story. It feels like Apollo has finally become apart of a family that he never had and with people who bring out the best in him. Having Apollo leave WAA for characters who we just met doesn't work.
    6. Making his ending arc focused on his past discounts all of the established character development. At the end of the day, Apollo chooses his childhood family (who he hasn't seen in 15 years) over his new family. Which in itself isn't a bad ending but because the players have no connection to Dhurke and Nahyuta this ending just feels unsatisfying.

Overall, it was pretty clear that the writers had no clear vision for Apollo's story arch which resulted in a character who had so much potential to be wasted. I think that his storyline with Dhurke could have worked if the devs introduced him in AJ. This would have provided a clear jumping-off point and a clear landing point. Through his relationship with Phoneix and Trucy he was able to overcome his feeling of abandonment which would have allowed him to finally face his past. I like the idea of Apollo creating his own firm and leaving the WAA but it feels wrong because his motivations go against everything that helped him get there as a character. I don't know, it really upsets me because I really like Apollo as a character and I feel like he did not get the ending that he deserved. I know this is a really long post but if you read this far let me know what you think.
