I'm new on this subreddit. I finished the three games and I'm currently playing Apollo Justice. And I am wondering why the judge looks still the same when it take place on the year 2026. Do you have any idea or explanation?

The Crossover vs. The Duology: Soundtrack Comparison

    Posted: 12 Jun 2020 12:47 AM PDT

There are a couple of things that the DGS duology takes from the crossover game, PLvsAA (or VS for short). By the far the most obvious example is the "multiple witnesses system" and idea of witnesses reacting to each other's statements. While it's never come to the main series (which is more reliant on "standard" court concepts), it's re-appeared in the DGS duology with a few more interesting changes such as witnesses occasionally actually interacting with each other. This change in particular is usually used for comedic purposes, though it is occasionally useful, particularly in DGS-5.

However, one other major connection between the crossover and the duology has to be the soundtracks. After all, both of them were composed by the same person, Yasumasa Kitagawa, who doesn't usually compose for Ace Attorney - that role goes to Noriyuki Iwadere. (Actually, Hiromitsu Maeba also composed some of the DGS tracks, but for the sake of simplicity I'm just going to mention Yasumasa Kitagawa. I won't mention names much, anyway.)

Thus, whether because of the composer or the time settings of VS and DGS, their soundtracks share a few similarities that aren't present in the rest of the series' soundtrack. I'm going to try and point out a few of these similarities, though I know none of the history behind the soundtrack development of any AA game. So, grab your headphones...

    General Style

VS and DGS are both set a few centuries back from the main series, though the former is much more of a "fictional" world than DGS is. This often results in different instrumentation to reflect the "older" time-setting. While the GBA-era soundtracks of the original trilogy are obviously going to be different from current games, there is still a clear difference between the soundtracks of VS and DGS and other new games like DD and SoJ. Observe, and feel free to click on whichever rows you choose - you don't have to check all of them. (I'm not sure why you wouldn't, though; AA music is always good.)

    Dual Destinies PLvsAA DGS/DGS2
Reminiscence Theme Wandering Heart Fated Magic Shattered Formulas
Logic Theme Logic Trinity Logic and Witchcraft/Baroque Logic and Trick
Prosecutor Theme Simon Blackquill Zacharias Barnham Barok van Zieks
Fate/Destiny Theme Illegal of Fate Courtroom Magic Trial in Disorder
Pursuit Theme Keep Pressing On Spell-Breaker/Casting Magic Time for a Great Turnabout

Besides the obvious difference of both of the latter two columns having more "classic orchestra"-style music, they also tend to use more strings and accordion in comparison to the clear electronic style of Dual Destinies. This is especially apparent in the prosecutor themes, since Dual Destinies in particular has a similar prosecutor to the ones in both VS and DGS. Simon Blackquill has a dark motif and owns a sword, Barnham has a less dark motif but owns a sword anyway, and Barok van Zieks is practically the embodiment of darkness. Despite this, Blackquill's theme still still carries a different melody than that of Barnham's and especially van Zieks'.

Spirit of Justice is similar in this aspect, though it leans slightly more into a totally different style of music due to the Khura'inese setting. As for the "Japanifornia" tracks, they're still noticeably different:

    Spirit of Justice PLvsAA DGS/DGS2
Detention Center Theme Cold-Glass Elegy Suspense (Layton)1 Rhapsody of Darkness
Core Theme Core 2016 (no core theme) The Core [2015]
(Standard) Defendant Lobby Theme Prelude to the Truth The Magical Prelude The Great Court Anteroom
(Standard) Court Begins Theme Court Begins ("""California""") Witches' Court Convenes Trial Opening/Court Begins

1Technically not for the Detention Center, but it plays when you visit Espella in the "Deathknell Dungeon", the crossover's equivalent. VS in general lacks investigation themes because those sections use remastered Professor Layton music, much like how some of the court themes (especially in the English Court) are remastered Ace Attorney themes.

Once again, the PLvsAA and DGS themes scream "baroque", particularly in the background. SoJ's themes don't. (By the way, I get that Barok's name is technically localized, but it sounds like Baroque. Coincidence?)

In summary, VS and DGS have much more baroque tracks than the rest of the series.

    Unique Themes

In addition to having a different theme style, both VS and DGS have a couple of trial themes that aren't in other games at all. The majority of these were in VS, but never re-appeared in DD or SoJ (despite the fact that they'd totally work). While these themes don't re-appear in DGS for the most part, they definitely show up in DGS2. Here are the five main tracks that differ:

    PLvsAA (mostly) DGS2
Title Screen Main Theme Prelude to Adventure
    Prelude to Resolve
(Final) Court Begins Theme The Trial of the Great Witch The Great Secret Trial
(Standard) Witness Theme Fiery Witnesses Witnesses Enter the Court
(Final) Witness Theme The Final Witness The Prison Guards
Pre-Pursuit Theme The Two-Step Turnabout Overture to Pursuit

(Yes, there are main themes! Who would've thought! Spirit of Justice is the only other game with a title theme, and it has a totally different tone from these themes. Oh, and I suppose the trilogy has a title theme too.)

The DGS versions of these tracks show noticeable improvements over their VS counterparts. Besides The Great Secret Trial literally being the best thing ever, the DGS version of these unique tracks tend to have more thematic consistency. In particular, while The Trial of the Great Witch and The Two-Step Turnabout are cool, they barely have any similarities to the "normal" themes in Witches' Court Convenes and Spell-Breaker. Meanwhile, in DGS2, The Great Secret Trial uses the base of Trial Opening, but adds tons more instrumentation to create a more climatic theme. Similarly, Overture to Pursuit contains a few bits of Time for a Great Turnabout's melody interspered here and there, indicating that a Pursuit theme is probably coming up.

One area VS one-ups DGS in is the final trial scene, however. In the crossover's final trial, the courtroom is completely different, out in the open for everyone to see. Even the title screen changes for this trial, from what I've heard. In DGS2-5, while Hart Vortex as the judge and the lack of a jury are enough to completely change the tone, the courtroom is still largely the same.

Regardless, both games have these themes, and they're certainly not in DD or SoJ. We can only imagine how these would sound in the newer mainline games. tfw there are no presto themes here

    Differences

While similar, there are some differences between the VS and DGS soundtracks. Half the VS soundtrack is composed by Tomohito Nishiura, who I believe traditionally composes for the Professor Layton series. It's almost surprising that the OST manages to be cohesive despite two different composers. Regardless, there are a few consequences to this:

    • VS lacks investigation themes. Professor Layton in general tends to have many "investigation" themes because there isn't an actual court segment. As such, non-trial tracks are meant to set the tone of the situation rather than signify an investigation. The entire game is an investigation, basically. On the other hand, the duology's Joint Reasoning naturally leads to many more "investigation" tracks, culminating in the amazing "The Game is Afoot!" from DGS2.
    • VS doesn't have many character themes. Besides the main characters, there are no character themes, not even "people" themes. This is because Professor Layton characters tend to be relatively one-note, offering a puzzle or two never to be seen again.
    • One of the greatest spoilers in DGS2 is that Asougi comes back and in flying colors; he becomes the final prosecutor and gets this theme as his objection theme instead of his original Samurai With A Mission theme from DGS. On the other hand, Professor Layton already has a theme, so while he technically dies and comes back as the final prosecutor too, his "objection" is simply a remix of his original theme in the crossover's music style. That said, Darklaw, who is also technically the final prosecutor, does have her own theme, though her name isn't on it. In comparison to Barnham's theme, Darklaw's feels a lot more like van Zieks'.
    • While not technically a difference, it's likely that the reason the crossover has a title theme is because Layton games traditionally have them. The title screen theme in PLvsAA was composed by Nishiura (the Layton composer), not Kitagawa.

Of course, there are a few minor differences that have nothing to do with this split as well:

    • VS has The Winning Combination/Theme of the United Front which never appears again in any other game. I have no idea why it's in the game, but it's cool. Yes, DGS2 technically has The Gate to the Truth in its final case, but its in-game purpose is much different.
    • VS doesn't have a pursuit variation for some reason.
    • DGS2 has more final court themes than VS does, most notably alternate defendant lobby and pursuit themes. Technically, Casting Magic plays far less than mainline pursuit themes and can be seen as a sort of "final theme" as well (with Courtroom Magic as the "standard" pursuit), but DGS2's pursuit only plays once.

    Summary

The DGS duology takes some inspiration from PLvsAA's music style and also has some similar tracks in it. I don't think this was entirely a coincidence, given that the same composer did both soundtracks (or at least, 1.5/3; half of each game).

What would you be disgusted to find? This is Furio Tigre's office waiting room btw.

Do you think Tier-Lists and Polls are Low-Effort Content?

    Posted: 11 Jun 2020 06:41 PM PDT

So I know this is slightly not-Ace Attorney related, but bear with.

I saw a thread here earlier of people saying this place is partially riddled with low-effort content. I'd somewhat slightly agree. Possibly I'm a perpetrator of that, and possibly this is also "low-effort content", but I thought perhaps collecting an idea of what the users of this sub think could help gather some clarity on the issue.
This was the thread - originally asking how to improve the sub.

Specifically the thread said that polls and tier-lists could be considered low-effort. Especially polls. JC-DisregardMe also pondered whether getting a community consensus on low-effort content could be a good idea.

My question, ironically to be answered by a poll, is do you think polls and/or tier lists are low-effort content and therefore should be purged from this subreddit to help bring it to more pristine Ace Attorney glory or not?

Sorry if this isn't strictly Ace Attorney-related and more meta about the sub itself. But the thread asked for a clear consensus of what we think, and I figured a direct way of knowing would be a poll... and the irony isn't lost on me. I'm also aware this isn't really my place to be asking this and this isn't for any official purposes or for any authority but just out of curiosity and possibly utility for the actual mods. I am a newbie to this sub and have less authority here than the average user.

Holy hell, this game aged well even if it's already 19 years old!

    Posted: 11 Jun 2020 02:07 AM PDT

So I purchased the trilogy a few weeks ago on the Switch, and after 30 hours of gameplay, I finished the first game. Despite playing this back on the DS back in the mid-2000s, I didn't remember much of the story since it was a really long time ago, and wow, how this game aged well.

The characters are just fascinating and the devs did an amazing job of giving unique and fun personalities to each one which I think made the game very interesting to play from start to end.

I'm excited to play part 2 since I wasn't able to play it back then, hopefully the energy and amount of fun continues with the rest of the series.

And yes, it blew my mind that this game was released back in 2001 on the GBA, and 2005 on the DS for the NA version. God I'm getting old.
