Outdated Ace Attorney theories and speculation

    Posted: 15 Mar 2020 01:45 PM PDT

I've followed this fandom for a long time. Over the years, in all the gaps between Ace Attorney games, I've seen all kinds of speculation and theories among fans about what might happen in the next upcoming game, whichever game that happened to be.

Some that I can recall include:

    • (Era: 2005-2007, pre-release marketing for Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney) - Phoenix's daughter is really a teenaged Pearl living under an assumed name.

Obviously this wasn't based on any solid evidence, but Phoenix wasn't old enough to have a biological daughter of Trucy's age unless she was born when he was around 18, without assuming adoption, so it was at least a reasonably believable theory. Ahh, those days when people still believed there would be a lot of story connections between the original trilogy and the post-timeskip games.

    • (Similar to the above) - Phoenix's daughter's mother is Maya/Iris.

The age doesn't line up, obviously, but shippers always have their favourites.

    • (Era: 2007-2013, post-AA4, pre-AA5) - AA4 Phoenix has cut all ties with his friends and associates from the original trilogy.

This isn't really in-character for him, and he even alludes to Maya in 4-2, but seeing as the rest of the original trilogy's cast is pretty much absent entirely, it wasn't totally impossible to believe. I never cared for this theory, because I always felt it didn't make any sense.

    • (Same time) - Apollo's father is Damon Gant.

This one was quite a popular headcanon for a good several years. Let's ignore how gross it is, and just address the reasons for it. Even following Investigations and its sequel, Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney was, at the time, about the only time in the series that Rise From the Ashes was referenced at all. Ema was back, and several mentions were made of the case on which she once accompanied Phoenix. The identity of Apollo's father was never specified (although Gant obviously doesn't fit the description given by Spark Brushel). Both Gant and Apollo have darker skin than average for the series, and in their official art, they have nearly identical posture.

2016 gave us Jove Justice, though, so that theory was finally waved off for good.

    • (Era: 2012-2013, pre-release marketing for Dual Destinies) - Apollo has gone rogue, and is the main prosecutor in AA5.

This is another one that I never liked, because it was based on interpretations of characters that I didn't agree with. The most common idea seemed to be that Apollo would learn the truth about his parentage and relation to Trucy some time after AJ:AA, and he would be so angry at Phoenix for hiding the truth from him that he would leave the Wright Anything Agency and become a prosecutor instead. This theory basically assumed that Apollo was already holding a grudge against Phoenix for his secretive nature in AJ:AA, and I didn't ever get that impression from Apollo's characterization in that game.

I remember seeing a lot of this around Tumblr, though, particularly thanks to our first impression of Apollo's appearance in the game. I remember seeing a post that specifically drew attention to the fact that the jacket Apollo is wearing covers up the spot where he wears his attorney's badge with near-surgical precision. This picked up once we got one of the Japanese trailers for the game, and this mysterious silhouette appeared at the end. I have no idea of where to find it now, but I also remember a Tumblr post in which someone drew Apollo in his jacket to exactly match the pose that the mysterious prosecutor was standing in in the trailer. (If anyone else remembers that, I'd love to see it again!)

And here's a fun fact I've discovered while putting this post together: Simon's silhouette in that trailer doesn't match any of his official art, at least not perfectly. It is, however, a perfect match for this drawing of his younger self, with his present-day ponytail added on.

    • (Same time) - Apollo has lost his memory, and is the main prosecutor in AA5.

This one assumed that Apollo's heavily-bandaged look meant he'd been in some serious accident that would cost him his memory and dramatically alter his temperament.

    • (Same time) - the then-unnamed-in-English redhead lawyer joining the cast is Apollo's sister, or some other relative.

This didn't seem to be based on much of anything. I did once see a nice bit of fanart combining this theory with the one just above, depicting Athena sobbing over an amnesiac Apollo, who doesn't remember her at all. (I'd love to see that again, too, if anyone else has any way to find it!)

    • (Era: 2013, right around the time of AA5's Japanese release) - Maya is dead in AA5.

No real basis again. Just a sad idea that some fans were paranoid about. I even saw mad speculation about this screenshot, taken out of context from the Japanese release, frantically believing that Candice Arme might be an older -- and deader -- Maya.

    • (Era: 2016, pre-release marketing for Spirit of Justice) - The new prosecutor in AA6 will be Dahlia Hawthorne.

Vague prosecutor silhouettes strike again. This came about thanks to the reveal trailer for AA6, with this image appearing at the end. The butterfly and association with spirit channelling were the only reasons, so far as I could ever tell.

So, those are the fan theories and ideas that I most recall seeing in over a decade enjoying this series. Thoughts on them? Any ideas you've had prior to a game's release, or any you've seen others pose?

Why Apollo did not fly together with Phoenix to Khura'in before the 6-1 case?

    Posted: 15 Mar 2020 08:17 PM PDT

If Apollo was not deliberately hiding that he was for some time in his past in Khura'in then why he let Phoenix flew there alone? Phoenix could just let Apollo be his tour guide. Also Athena could got the legitimate 6-2 case and prove to everyone that she's more competent than she eventually have ended up in her 6-4 case.

Would you be a Defense Attorney or a Prosecutor? *Spoilers Allowed*

    Posted: 15 Mar 2020 05:34 PM PDT

I would be a Defense Attorney.

I always love going to the courtroom to let the truth out rather than being a prosecutor and just solve Investigations-style cases like what Edgeworth did. And when I'm a Defense Attorney, I can solve crimes while finding the right culprit for the truth similar to Edgeworth. It just that feels more natural that way in trial compared to anywhere else. Plus being a prosecutor gives you power, and that's no good. (Such as Manfred and Blaise).

What lawyer occupation would you choose and why?

How involved is Larry Butz in the SoJ DLC case? (No spoilers)

    Posted: 15 Mar 2020 06:37 PM PDT

I just finished the final SoJ case last night and boy, did I cry like a baby. Now I'm on to the DLC case, and boy, am I about to cry like a baby...but this time, in the worst kind of way. Why? Because I just can't stand the Butz. Seeing his stupid face makes me want to hurl myself out a window.

So here's my question: how involved is he in this case? (No spoilers, please.) Is he the center of it all, or is he just kind of tacked on in the background like in Bridge to the Turnabout? Seeing him first thing really made me get off to a bad start, so I'm just trying to decide if I want to continue with it or if it's going to be too insufferable in my current state of mind. It's only been 5 minutes and I'm already super annoyed.
