Best version of the first three Ace Attorney games?

    Posted: 31 Jan 2020 11:10 PM PST

Hey, so I'm looking to replay the Ace Attorney series, after not touching them for a while.

However, I originally played the series on DS, and was wondering whether I should upgrade to the Nintendo Switch (or any other modern console, I just use my Switch the most) version of the Trilogy instead.

Are these the definitive versions of the first three games or should I just play the DS versions instead?

An idea for the plot of AA7 (contains spoilers for AA6 Case 2)

    Posted: 31 Jan 2020 01:58 PM PST

Before I start, let me repeat: This post contains spoilers for Ace Attorney: Spirit of Justice Case 2.

I'm close to finishing Spirit of Justice, and I'm pretty sure that case 2 "The Magical Turnabout" was a filler case with no relevance to the big story surrounding Lady Kira and the Defiant Dragons.

Even more suprising to me was the villain of the case, Roger Retinez. In my opinion he had much more potential than even some of the more famous returning villains. He is one of the few villains who doesn't really break down during the breakdown, and even after being exposed as the murderer, he doesn't see himself at fault (with a somewhat reasonable justifcation). He even points out that he won the battle - the battle of magicians that is - because Trucy wasn't able to figure out how he committed the murder. The few villains in the series that left the scene with that sort of attitude usually returned in a later case for a much more dramatic showdown.

So I was thinking. What if Retinez turns out to be the big bad in AA7? Like the top tier magician he is, he could coordinate a series of crimes from behind bars (with each crime representing a different turnabout/case) to fulfill his goal: Having his revenge on Troupe Gramarye that he still desires at the end of AA6.

This would also make for a suspenseful plot as Trucy would be a direct target of Roger. Now, the concept of a big master villain that reappears over an entire game is not new in the series, so I thought of another plot twist: What if this time, the gang finds out relatively early or at least suspects (maybe in case 2 or 3) that Retinez is the culprit (instead of in the final case), but they lack clear evidence to prove it, and the later cases focus on the mind games between Phoenix and Roger? Here are some ideas:

    • Roger intentionally drops enough hints to get the gang on his track, and he enjoys their inability to hold him accountable as his stay in prison provides an alibi and he is already convicted

    • Trucy could serve as vulnerable point for Phoenix. If Retinez manages to manipulate her or put her in danger, he could blackmail Phoenix into defending him in an upcoming trial (see case 2-4 for similarity), maybe even without allowing Phoenix to let Apollo and Athena in on the blackmail situation, creating further suspense

    • or to turn this idea around, imagine if Retinez somehow managed to take Apollo or Athena hostage in the final case, and to free them, Phoenix has to get a not-guilty verdict for Retinez. The catch? The only other possible culprit in the case is Trucy, so Retinez' plan is to get Trucy's own 'father' to convict her while he gets the not-guilty verdict. That would be a total triumph over Troupe Gramarye and total destruction for Trucy. Needless to say, the gang will somehow turn it around in the end

    • Retinez commiting crimes from behind bars could be done via hechmen, although that seems to be a bit lame for this type of character. A better approach would be certain set-ups that have been planned by Retinez long before he went to jail and which now get triggered or activated (e.g. television screenings that are activated via timer and contain riddles - not totally unlikely since Retinez was a media mogul before going to prison)

Most of this is just daydreaming, but I just hate to see a good villain go to waste.

Favorite and Least Favorite Villains? (Possible spoilers for the series, including DGS)

    Posted: 31 Jan 2020 06:17 PM PST

Just want to get an opinion on what people think of the villains. Unlike my defendants post, I am not excluding the main/major villains for the favorite category (yes, that includes Godot. At this point, I think he's fair game as far as tragic villains go.)

~~As always, please mark spoilers if your character is from DGS 1 or 2!~~

    DGS Update Data

    Posted: 31 Jan 2020 06:43 PM PST

I accidentally deleted the update data for DGS, and now the fan translation won't work. Now when I launch the game, it says that an update is available, but when I try downloading the update, it doesn't appear under "Downloadable Content" and the game is in Japanese. Can someone please help me get the English translation back?

PS: Scarlet Study, if you happen to see this, your hard work is greatly appreciated by all of us!

Am I the only one who doesn't like turnabout reclaimed?

    Posted: 31 Jan 2020 10:07 AM PST

The thing I love about dual destinies is the dark plot and I loved the whole dark age of the law idea but reclaimed isnt serious at all and I found the whole thing of Rimes trying to kill an orca and framing an accidental death on an orca dumb and I also have a strong hatred for Sasha I just find her annoying

What's your favorite Announce the Truth theme?

    Posted: 31 Jan 2020 08:25 AM PST

Mine used to be Announce the Truth 2013, but after playing DGS I can say without a doubt that it's Announce the Truth 2015. There's such a heavy sense of foreboding with it and you get the feeling the truth isn't something you want to hear, but the wailing violins featured so prominently are almost begging and pleading for the truth to be set free no matter how unsightly it may be.
