I just finished Apollo Justice for the first time. Time for some opinions. Many spoilers ahead.

    Posted: 29 Oct 2019 07:25 PM PDT

Allow me to begin with this:

I really like this game. I also apologize for the sheer length of this review, but I always have a lot to say about this franchise, y'know? With that, let's begin.

A while back I made a post giving my thoughts on the very first case of the game, which you may want to look into as I won't really be talking about it here.

Let's start with case 2. Case 2... is pretty good. It's pretty standard Ace Attorney stuff. Wocky Kitaki is an annoying defendant, it's got an obvious villain in the form of Alita Tiala/Worse Dahlia Hawthorne, and things like that which might hold it down. But, honestly? The mystery was pretty intriguing, what with the car accident and noodle stand on top of the murder. I was invested throughout the whole thing because of that. And I laughed out loud several times too, especially at Wesley Stickler, who I thought was hilarious to cross-examine. The case did some things that I really liked, such as the twist that Dr. Meraktis wasn't innocent at all and tried to murder Alita out of selfishness, or the part at the end where Wocky's father shows that the entire reason they were planning on switching businesses was for Wocky's health. Things like those really redeemed this case for me, and I honestly like it!

We're also introduced to Klavier, whom I love. I can't stop listening to his baller theme song Guilty Love, and I find it very refreshing to have a prosecutor who doesn't want your head on a stick and is actually a nice guy (despite who his brother is, but we'll get to that). We also see the return of Ema Skye! Rise from the Ashes was my favorite case of the original game, so it was cool to see her back, though I'm not a huge fan of her attitude change. Ultimately, it's not a huge deal, though, and I'm glad she's there.

Okay, time for the big one. Case 3: Turnabout Serenade.

I... enjoyed this case. Call me a freak... but I thought it was cool.

I'd like to start by addressing the one thing that I HATE about the case (and no, it's not the video). It's the obvious, lurking logical inconsistency that all of the characters fail to address, and that is the 14-year-old defendant being accused of firing a 45-caliber gun. REPEATEDLY they stress that this gun can dislocate the shoulder of even a fully grown man who fires it due to its kickback alone, and the actual culprit, Daryan Crescend, DOES sustain damage to his arm in the end because of it. And YET they are accusing a 14 YEAR OLD CHILD of firing it not once but TWICE. His arm should be completely and utterly destroyed, if that's the case! It's asinine, really, and it's a criticism of Apollo Justice that I can't argue against because it's just... glaring.

With that out of the way... I really like the rest of this case. I think the mystery is super intriguing, I thought the villain was fun to face off against, I thought Lamiroir was an interesting character (if only for how mysterious she was), and I still love the idea of a murder being carried out to the lyrics of a song. Sure, the pacing has issues. I will concede to that. I will even admit that the dang video is maybe shown one-too-many times (even though it's really not as awful as people say, in my opinion). But, none of this stopped me from thoroughly enjoying this case. I know it's considered the worst in the entire franchise, I know that; I can't even say the reasoning for that claim is bad, because it's got problems. However, its flaws didn't stop me from enjoying it. That is all.

In any case, it's time to move on to case 4. Gonna be honest, this case is where my shining criticism of the game lies; we'll get there in a moment. The opening cutscene shows a strange blur of events and some kind of program, ending with the climactic shot of the man behind it all, Kristoph Gavin. I was very, very excited. The entire game, I had a suspicion that Kristoph was lurking in the shadows, waiting to come out, and it was going to happen. Well, I was kinda disappointed.

The case starts out just... fine. The mystery is pretty normal for Ace Attorney. Guy is poisoned, person in room (who happens to be the daughter) is suspect. I did some halfhearted investigating, but my interest SKYROCKETED when it was revealed that the rough sketches under the paintings were of Apollo's past cases. Unfortunately, they never really follow up on this in a conclusive way.

Regardless, I sprung into the trial. It, like the investigation beforehand, was pretty normal. I spent a lifetime trying to figure out WHERE to perceive on freaking Spark Brushel, and eventually made it to the end. My interest went up once again when Vera Misham nearly died on the witness stand from poisoning. From there, it thrust right into Phoenix's last trial, which got me very excited, as I'd never imagined I'd get to play as Phoenix in the game. It was... okay. It was cool to see how practiced Phoenix had become; he was no longer the wishy-washy lawyer he used to be. Honestly, there isn't much more to say about it than that. It was fun, but not overly amazing or anything. Phoenix goofs, presents the forgery, and BAM. Disbarred.

Then, I was suddenly in that weird program thing from the beginning of the case. Phoenix came on screen and explained it to me, and yet I didn't feel any more informed. When I saw the mission-based layout of this segment, my jaw dropped. A user on my previous Apollo Justice post stated that "case 4 is... unique." At the time, I had no idea what they meant, but I understood it all in that moment.

I traversed the various rooms, beginning to piece together the puzzle; I learned that Kristoph was definitely the client (not as if I had doubts about that though), I received confirmation that Zak Gramarye was Shadi Smith (which I had also guessed), and I learned that Apollo was a descendant of the Gramarye name (which surprised me a lot, actually). Knowing all this, I launched into the final trial, brimming with excitement. I couldn't wait to face off with Kristoph Gavin in court again. Yeah... it was disappointing. It's a really short final trial with only one testimony, and you don't even present evidence in that testimony, you perceive Kristoph's mutated hand. Kristoph, while he puts up a good fight, isn't around for long enough to make his defeat very satisfying (especially since it isn't by Apollo's hand). I think I'll make a follow-up post with detailed thoughts on Kristoph as a villain in the near future, so stay tuned for that if you're interested. The amazing pursuit theme this game has doesn't even play once during the trial, which is criminal, and the whole thing generally feels anti-climactic. The final trial is my biggest and most outspoken criticism of Apollo Justice.

Nonetheless, the ending was touching; that's something that every Ace Attorney does well. I had finished the game, and was happy with my overall experience, enough to rank it very highly in my favorites despite its flaws. Perhaps it was the creative liberties the game took or the excitement of a new protagonist that gripped me, but whatever it was, it hooked me to the very end.

If you made it this far, thanks for sticking with it and listening to my thoughts; I'd love to hear yours as well. Have a good day!

    The Inherited Turnabout Thoughts (Briefly)

    Posted: 29 Oct 2019 07:26 PM PDT

    What I Liked:

Most of the characters and their themes. (Cinnamon Roll Ray, Good Old Larry, Cute Delicia, Daddy Master, Daddy Edgeworth) The Story The Ending The Switching of the past and present.

    What I didn't like:

Inconsistent Logic Chess (Goes from very easy (Larry) to unfairly hard (penalty for just asking a question)

The whole Justine and Sebastián thing is getting kind of repetitve.

Saving felt kind of annoying. (This chapter went way too fast but maybe that's just me)

There wasn't many locations to go. I felt like I was trapped in the same areas the whole time.

The Culprit felt a little too predictable.

(Salty) The Last Two Cross Examinations where I knew the answer before it started but it wouldn't let you just present evidence.

Definitive way to play newer games?

    Posted: 29 Oct 2019 05:54 PM PDT

I've played the trilogy on switch and Apollo Justice on 3DS, looking to play Investigations and the final two games. I have a decent phone so mobile is an option for me, as well as DS (have an R4 for translations if applicable).

Just picked up the trilogy on switch and I was pleasantly surprised to see that they added rumble. Wasn't expecting it after coming from the DS version.
