Ace Attorney: Retrospect as an attorney now

    Posted: 05 Oct 2021 08:13 AM PDT

For context, I am a practicing defense attorney much like our friend Mr. Wright. Ive been a fan of the Ace Attorney series for many years, especially before I studied law.

I was having a moment of retrospect for the game series and found myself having a deeper appreciation for the portrayal of defense attorneys compared to most media within the series.

Ace Attorney portrays Phoenix as someone proud to protect one's right to a fair and honest defense in a court of law. Although most of Phoenix's clients are wrongfully accused, something typically very rare in the real world of criminal law in the United States, it still portrays the work of defense as noble. His pride in defense work remains unwavering.

Most media today, be it shows, movies, or the news, in the United States, portray the work of criminal defense as slimey, unthinkable, borderline "wrong," etc. Many politicians and people in leadership positions come from prosecutorial backgrounds, resulting in a social rhetoric persecutorial in nature and looking down upon defense work of "criminals." Even politicians have attacked each other for having criminal defense backgrounds. Society believes in the fallacy that if a lawyer defends an accused of criminal charges, it must mean they condone and defend those wrongdoings alleged.

The reality is many proudly defend and promote the right to defense in this country rather than the accused crimes. This follows similarly in nature to many of the defense attorneys in Ace Attorney. It is a thankless job with a great deal of nobility often overlooked. What we do is protect one's fair right to defense, pure and simple. Ace Attorney's defense attorneys do the same. A determination to not let the prosecutors in-game take advantage and succeed without pitching a fair defensive argument and strategy. A same train of thought applying to reality as well.

What I'm getting at is that it's a refreshing breath of air compared to what we typically see in media here. Portrayals of criminal law are almost always from the angle of prosecuting rather than defending. Thus I have grown to appreciate Ace Attorney's portrayal of defense attorneys a lot more in retrospect than I did before becoming a licensed attorney because it portrays criminal law, even in a goofy, unrealistic video game universe, from the perspective of the defense for once and in a positive light.

G2-3 is really missing a special fail condition

    Posted: 05 Oct 2021 09:02 PM PDT

The series has always had a special ending for the condition that your client is found innocent but you still fail for some reason.

This applies perfectly to G2-3, because The Judge deems your client innocent but then Ryunoske asks for the trial to continue. But if you fail after that the Judge/Jury is just like "Well now we're going to find Harebrayne guilty just because we think you were an a-hole. Go and think about how you being a jerk got this innocent man sent to jail!"

I noticed one single hanging plot point; did I just miss it?

    Posted: 05 Oct 2021 04:02 PM PDT

From what I remember, Kazuma states that his household received a unmarked letter six years (I think) before the story starts, from which he learned that his father was considered a mass murderer in Great Britain. However, it's never brought up who actually sent it. I don't really see any that would have a good reason to, and why would they wait years to do so anyway?

Mikotoba knew, but he was pretty hard on the side of "keep everything under wraps" until the events of the second game.

Jigoku could have, but this was years before he knew he'd need an assassin student, so I don't see why he'd want to either.

Did I miss them talking about it, or is it just something we're supposed to guess at?

Detail on cases 4 and 5 of AAI2

    Posted: 05 Oct 2021 05:59 PM PDT

Just recently i finished AAI2 and I loved it but the ending got me thinking.

Aside from the issue discuseed here, there is other thing that goes unexplained. They perform the fake kidnapping because the body double gets to be president, but Blaise/Banzai and Roland/Miwa are supposed to get a lot of money out of it (I specifically remember Kay not being able to get a grasp on how much money it was). This money is never accounted for. I can see the body double (if he even got a part of it) spending it in some shady politics staff. But what did the other two used it for?

Not only they kept working like normal, but Blaise actually got more money for the auctions. I can buy that he didn't do it for the money, but just because he could cause he is that childish, and didn't need that much money. On the other hand, Roland was working in prison fearing for her life everyday. What is the point of staying in prison where Sirhan Dogen/Ryouken Houinbou knows your every move? Why didn't she use that money to start a new life elsewhere? Am I missing/misremebering something?

What was the worst scenes/parts you could think of in DD and/or SoJ?

    Posted: 05 Oct 2021 11:47 AM PDT

    1. Nahyuta being a poopyhead in every case (SoJ).
    2. I hated not knowing the identity of the Phantom (DD).
    3. Maya being kidnapped and being arrested in the same game (SoJ).
    4. Damian Tenma pretending to be possessed…WTF? (DD)
    5. The scenes involving Athena and Trucy in 6-DLC
    6. The epilogue of 6-2.

Anyone else imitate Ace Attorney animations IRL?

    Posted: 05 Oct 2021 03:04 AM PDT

I have a confession to make. You know that one sprite of Miles Edgeworth where he is crossing his arms, and taps his index folder.

Yeah, I do that. All the time.

Trying to think of other animations I imitate. Phoenix Wright's nod. Godot smelling the coffee just before drinking it. (Though I drink hot chocolate). When Apollo is thinking hard and presses his finger on his head. When Edgeworth laughs and smugly shakes his head. Even Gumshoe breathing, or Klavier's air-guitar strum when I'm alone. Kristoph adjusting his glasses even though I don't wear them. Trucy's animation when she is excited, and jumps up a little. Mia confidently brushing her hair. Come to think of it, there are quite a lot. But I know I can't be the only one.
