    Ace Attorney 7 - The Facts, pre-TGS

    Posted: 17 Sep 2021 04:44 PM PDT

Hi, everyone. A few important things I think I should put out into this subreddit's space.

We're a little under two weeks out from the Tokyo Game Show, and so we're once again walking into the yearly loop of anticipation for possible new regarding Ace Attorney, other Capcom franchises, and the offerings of the various other companies involved with the event for the year. First, a reminder: Capcom's stream will be around 50 minutes long and will air at 6 AM Pacific time on September 30th. For the moment, Capcom's promotional website for the event does not have any details on what it will include, but generally, they update it to include a fairly detailed list of every major item they intend to show off a while before the event. Next thing - TGS is not E3. It's generally a more business-oriented event, and not usually home to "surprise" game reveals. If Capcom posts their schedule for the event and it doesn't include Ace Attorney or whatever else you might be looking for, assume that they will not be showing that thing off.

Obviously in the wake of The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles there's a lot of speculation about possible Ace Attorney news in this community and others. As a result of both people's excitement and a lot of incomplete information floating around, some of it morphing into outright misinformation as it goes along. I want to use this post to clarify a few things.

    WHAT WE ALREADY KNOW

Many of you will remember that in November of last year, there was a massive data breach at Capcom Japan. A huge amount of data was stolen in the hack, and after Capcom refused to pay the ransom demanded by the hackers behind it, quite a lot of that information was leaked online. This included, of course, documentation surrounding work going on in the company connected with the Ace Attorney games. This leak was the first place we learned about the Dai Gykauten Saiban games finally being localized in English as The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles. Another point of much attention was a mention of Ace Attorney 7 in an internal production calendar dated from 2019, which stated that Capcom intended to release AA7 this year, not long after TGAAC.

Very important point: there is significant reason to believe that major setbacks may have altered or even outright erased this plan. Nothing else in the November leak ever mentions AA7 again, even with many Ace Attorney-related documents from throughout 2020 appearing in the leak as well. That single calendar is the only thing we've ever seen to suggest Capcom's target for the development and release of AA7, and critically, there are other, more recent document listing Capcom projects for the next few years beyond that point that include no mention of AA7.

Next, just a short while ago, a "leak" appeared on 4chan, claimed to be a photo of a press document Capcom provided for their upcoming TGS stream. This image includes a mention of a new Ace Attorney reveal, but there are already multiple reasons to believe this "leak" is bullshit, and very little about it that makes it seem credible.

    WHAT WE SHOULD BE DOING

It's typical for new Ace Attorney games to first be revealed in Weekly Famitsu, a Japanese gaming magazine, prior to TGS. There is only one more Famitsu issue due to come out prior to Capcom's TGS show, so we can wait on hearing about anything that might be in there, but so far there's been nothing.

Additionally, Ace Attorney's 20th anniversary is coming up just a week and-a-half after their TGS show. Documents from the November leak originally suggested that Capcom planned to have the official anniversary website updated way back in March of this year, but so far, it hasn't happened. Capcom has made very little mention of the anniversary so far, in fact, despite how close we are to it now. It's entirely possible that they've chosen to scale back their anniversary plans for the series, be it because of the pandemic, internal development issues for the games, or any number of other possibilities, but on this point, only time will tell.

For all the reasons outlined in this post, I encourage everyone in this community to approach TGS and the anniversary in October with heavily tempered expectations. Nothing hurts more when it comes to a series you love than hyping yourself up only to be disappointed, and with the last few years of TGS shows, we've had more than a little reason to be disappointed already.

Ace Attorney isn't dead, even if nothing new is announced this year. The games industry is still in a very difficult position at the moment, but Ace Attorney itself is most likely doing better than it ever has before, from a financial standpoint. Just be patient, enjoy The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles and all the fandom content surrounding it, and let's see if we get a pleasant surprise soon.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe this animation of Albert Harebrayne eating his paper only plays if you pursue him when there's nothing to pursue. I went back through the game to go through all his dialogue and, unless I missed something, it never played anywhere else.

TGAA's mysteries feel better paced and structured.

    Posted: 17 Sep 2021 04:25 PM PDT

Now I haven't finished the whole game just yet (only just starting Chapter 5) but I've felt the mysteries within TGAA so far have had some of the better pacing and structuring in the whole series. While I still feel slightly ahead of Ryunosuke at most points, its mostly by just a few minutes of game time which feels perfect and I'm never so far ahead of the mystery that it feels like the game is going at a slog of a pace to try to frame an answer I had gotten to ages ago.

It really feels like the developers have improved massively in the actual pacing of the storytelling within the mysteries to make the players enjoy going along with the lawyer instead of the frustration of being too far ahead of the game itself or being lost as the game doesn't properly set up the required pieces to understand the next part of the mystery.

My only exception to this would be Chapter 1 which while I liked the story of the chapter, the trial felt way too long for what it was doing and I felt like I was much further ahead on the logic then Ryunosuke at multiple times. (>! Literally everything about the steaks and the plates felt like it dragged on !<)

Do you think we’ll ever get a game where the main character is female?

    Posted: 17 Sep 2021 09:15 AM PDT

Video game gender politics on Reddit, let's GOOOOO

Nah though I've seen that in the English speaking fandom it's really not a hot take to want a game where the primary protagonist is a woman. Athena is the closest we've gotten but even then I felt Nick and Polly had more of the spotlight (understandable, as fans had been waiting for Nick to return and were begging for Polly to get more development).

I feel like there must be SOMEONE on the AA team who at least wants to give it a try, as we saw with Athena getting a case for the sake of it in SoJ when there was no story reason for her to have one (and I actually liked 6-4, I thought it was fun) - I feel they would have just demoted her to sidekick if they weren't dedicated to giving her billing equal to the boys at some point. Susato in Chronicles is another example - they didn't HAVE to put all that work in giving her a case, but they did, and I know I'm not the only one who wanted to see more of her.

Athena getting her own game seems like a natural next step for the modern series, but there's one reason I'm worried that won't happen: developers still worry today that a non-sexy lady as a main character will somehow make the game reach fewer demographics and therefore sell less. It's a sexist belief, but honestly, not entirely unprecedented (as much as I want the girl-show ghetto to burn at the stake). And Ace Attorney already has a precarious position sales wise - we already missed out on investigations 2, DD and SoJ were digital releases, and I'm shocked DGS got rereleased at all since DGS2 was apparently the lowest selling game since the GBA trilogy. Why would they risk further losses by making the protagonist someone who they think audiences won't relate to, even if they're wrong?

Tl;dr I think giving Athena her own game is a natural next step, but I don't think they'll actually go through with it.

I spoiled myself the identity of one of the characters in the third game of the original trilogy? Can I still enjoy the original games?

    Posted: 17 Sep 2021 02:51 PM PDT

So I recently finished the fourth case of Ace Attorney and to see the breakdown of the final culprit was satisfying to say the least. So I watched it over and over on Youtube again. Suddenly I got a video of the breakdown of Godot in the end of Trials and Tribulations. To make the matters worse, I also saw the true face of him in an meme video and know that he is apparently the boyfriend of Mia Fey*.*

Can I still enyoy the games despite knowing that Godot is getting arrested in the end?

Edit: Yeah I shouldn´t wonder to see spoilers in the internet.

I've heard it said multiple times Phoenix was going to be dropped from the series after Trials & Tribulations with Takumi being forced to include Phoenix by Capcom. However considering how integral Phoenix is to the story I can't see how the story could work without him. Have they ever gone in detail about these Phoenix-less drafts?

Now that Chronicles has been released, how would you rank the AA soundtracks?

    Posted: 17 Sep 2021 07:19 PM PDT

Obviously, feel free to expand on your choices and mention your favorite tracks!

    For me:

    1. Chronicles: Lumped these two together since there's very little change in the soundtrack between entries. In any case: the Chronicles OST, like Chronicles itself, has a very specific artistic vision and commits to it 100%. If you aren't a fan of that vision, I can see why you wouldn't like this soundtrack, but as someone who loves orchestral music, Chronicles' soundtrack is simply exquisite, not to mention huge. There isn't a single song I really dislike and they all perfectly suit the moment they come into the game, and I can't stop myself from listening to them. Favorite tracks: Kazuma's themes, Overture to Adventures, The Resolve of Ryunosuke Naruhodo, Stronghart's theme, Van Zieks' theme, Drebber's theme, Gregson's theme, Sholmes' theme, Natsume's theme...
    2. AA1: Despite being the first game, the music here is killer. There isn't a single bad song on the soundtrack, and there's a great range in tone across songs: great emotional songs, great energetic songs, a fantastic victory theme, it's iconic and rightfully so. Cornered has yet to be beaten as the best Pursuit theme, in my opinion, and I remember loving it so much I was angry when the soundtrack was almost totally different in JFA (but in retrospect, it was a great creative decision). Favorite tracks: Cornered, Objection 2001, Jailers' Elegy, End, the DL6 theme, the Cross-Examination theme
    3. AAI2: Absolutely fucking outstanding. The moment I heard the Prologue theme (one of the best prologue themes in the series) I knew this was gonna be one of my favorite AA soundtracks. I don't know what to say: the general sound of the Investigations series appeals to me a lot, like the AA1 soundtrack it has a great range in tone, with more diversity in instruments. I love the Great Revival and love its remixes here. My only issue is that the emotional themes don't hit as hard for me here as in the first two. Still amazing, though. Favorite tracks: Confess the Truth, Logic Chess, Justine Courtney's theme, Joking Motive, The Man Who Masterminds The Game, Moozilla's Theme
    4. DD: Best Objection themes in the series. There's probably a lot you can say about how trying to juggle three lawyers as the protagonist hurt the game, but one thing that's hard to argue is that every single Objection theme we get is amazing. The other songs are nothing to sneeze at, obviously: Lively People is my favorite "silly characters" theme in AA and always puts a smile on my face when I hear it, "I'm Fine!" is a fucking incredible song, the generally jazzy vibe a lot of the songs have is just so great. It also has the 2nd best post-trilogy Pursuit theme, in my opinion. Favorite tracks: Courtroom Revolutionnaire, Objection 2013, A New Chapter in Trials, I'm Fine, Lively People, Keep Pressing On
    5. AA3: Some may be surprised to see this so low, obligatory "it's AA, the series has amazing music, being towards the bottom of this ranking still means the music is fucking amazing." I love the atmosphere of the soundtrack, generally. Objection 2004 is a great theme, a lot of the minor characters' themes are great (like Listen, Please! and Swingin' Tiger, which has an incredible jazz rendition), there are also some great eerie themes. The Reminiscence themes are also insanely good. Honestly, it's only as low as it is because the court suite just doesn't measure up to that of the above games, in my opinion. Favorite tracks: Objection 2004, Dahlia's theme, Godot's theme, Mask Demasque's theme, Scenery Where the Hazy Bridge is Seen, End, Trial, the Detention Center theme
    6. AAI: Great, great piano, great remixes of the Great Revival, overall a killer soundtrack. Favorite tracks: Lying Coldly, Confess the Truth, the Investigation and cross-examination themes, Kay Faraday's theme, Lang's theme
    7. AJ: Another fantastic soundtrack. Overtaken and Guilty Love tend to be the most mentioned in terms of praising this soundtrack, but honestly, for me, it's some of the more minor themes that I rave about: this game has my favorite cross-examination theme, and I loved the slowed down rendition we get in Perceive sections. Favorite tracks: Trial, Cross-Examination, Child of Magic, Tell the Truth, Troupe Gramarye, End, Apollo's Objection theme
    8. AA2: This is the AA OST that I go back to the least. It's not bad, by any means: actually, it's really fucking good. Both renditions of The Great Revival are excellent. I love the Steel Samurai ballad. It's mainly weighed down for me for just not being as great as the others, I'm also not a fan of the more abrasive sounds we get in a lot of the more energetic themes - just personally not my style. Favorite tracks: The Great Revival, Pearl's theme, Steel Samurai ballad, Magatama theme, Victory theme, More Happy People
