Yasumasa Kitagawa's work in Chronicles is a masterpiece.

    Posted: 04 Aug 2021 05:00 PM PDT

From a chad who composed PL vs. PW's soundtrack, it is no surprise he implemented the orchestral approach on a game set in 19th century, as per his words in developer blogs. Throughout the history of Ace Attorney series, music plays an important part in immersion, Chronicles is no different. Because of the "clean-sheet" design of Chronicles, in which there are no other games it was associated to in terms of timeline, Yasumasa fully utilized the liberty of composing a truly original, new masterpieces. He even introduced a new form of soundtracks never seen in previous Ace Attorney games.

    • A soundtrack whenever new witness(es) enters the stand. A very nice distinction from the all too familiar court begins. It sets the mood of curiosity in whatever they are about to testimony.
    • Objection themes are practically part of an attorney's identity of the Ace Attorney series. Chronicles took it further by adding a variation of objection. These are essentially two levels of Ryunosuke's objection. In The Case of Visiting Professor, the timing of their play is very well suited to his level of confidence as an attorney so far. In later cases, it is based on the intensity of his objection, which helps reflect Ryunosuke's mood at that moment. His "cousin" will eventually have similarities in this regard.
    • Chronicles introduced a new gameplay, Judicial Examination, along with its corresponding soundtrack, It really sets the mood to get serious, and starting thinking in dealing with a tough position. Not especially jurors can be eccentric, annoying, and/or racist. Yasumasa's attention to detail in this soundtrack is audible here: melody repeats six times representing the number of jurors, a bridge that repeats melody four times representing the number of "not guilty" votes needed to continue the trial, and a somewhat chaotic melody that represents some jurors' displeasure of their unity ruined by a Nipponese.
    • As if a suspense theme isn't enough, why not add another one? Really helps setting the mood just how bad the stakes are.
    • Did a court experience unexpected turn of events? There are two soundtracks for that. A brief blockage that needs to be resolved. Or perhaps a serious question that needs answering?
    • As if suspense isn't enough, there is a new soundtrack whenever the courtroom is in chaos. As if things could not get even more confusing enough.
    • There is court begins soundtrack, so why not court ends too before closing the trial?
    • Dance of Deduction has one of the most complicated soundtracks of the whole game (as complicated as Sholmes): a jingle, three types, and two backstage. Sets the mood in gauging how close Ryunosuke is in solving the mystery (for the most part).
    • Two rubbish soundtracks (let's appreciate Herlock's attempt in playing his own theme) just for the sake of giggles.
    • And finally, a set of soundtracks reserved exclusively for the very last episode. Really sets the mood just how high the stakes are, and how rewarding could it be once it is over.

We also have a chance of listening orchestral instruments that are rarely used today, such as harpsichord, triangles, accordions, and more.

In summary: Yasumasa Kitagawa is a great ace composer.

JUST A HEADS UP: You won’t get any Accolades/Achievements if you use Story Mode.

    Posted: 04 Aug 2021 09:49 PM PDT

I learned it the hard way by using it in one specific part in Case 5. I know they mentioned it in the settings but I wasn't expecting it would lock me from getting anything at all.

So tread carefully if you use Story Mode.

Fun fact: Not including the Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright crossover, the 5th case of The Great Ace Attorney 2: Resolve marks the 50th case in the series!

    Opinions on G1-3

    Posted: 04 Aug 2021 03:39 PM PDT

Just finished it last night and what a case. I'm assuming the way it ended it's setting up more for later but what a case.

The whole summation examination is an interesting game mechanic that I'm excited to do more with.

Van Zieks is probably one of my new favorite prosecutors as soon as he put his leg up on the bench I could tell I would like him.

I feel bad for McGilded though getting a not guilty verdict just to then get killed right after. But I knew as soon as Van Zieks pointed out the blood was fabricated that he was guilty.

    Unpopular Opinion on Iris Watson/Wilson

    Posted: 04 Aug 2021 03:49 PM PDT

Personally, I don't really like Iris that much, mostly because of the child prodigy angle. Normally, I don't really have a problem with those characters, but I feel like they took it a bit far with her, so it's hard for me to take her seriously. I mean, the girl is a successful author, an excellent chef, makes delicious tea with the herbs that she grew, is an inventor, chemist, and a medical professional apparently, has deduction skills on par with Sherlock himself, can tell when people are lying, etc. I get that the environment she grew up in helped shape her to become that way, but I personally think it's too much. Does anyone think the same way, or am I the odd one out?

Edit: I should probably mention that I only finished the first game, not the second. So please avoid spoilers of that game if you can. My post is referring to her character in the first game only, so there's a possibility my opinion will change after I finish the second game

Why do people hate Ace Attorney: Apollo Justice?

    Posted: 05 Aug 2021 12:33 AM PDT

I have just finished all the games except the great ace attorney and the AAI series. Was going through some old YT comments whilst listening to songs from the AA Trilogy. Seemed like people really didn't like AA:AJ. It is my second fav AA game. So, just wanted to ask why?

    Final Chapter or Escapades?

    Posted: 04 Aug 2021 10:31 PM PDT

So I've just finished GAA2-4. In the prep to play the final chapter I realized I missed the escapades and the recommended time to do them. So I'm asking now should I go through to the final chapter or play through the escapades now?

    Another Translation Oddity with AA3...

    Posted: 04 Aug 2021 11:41 PM PDT

Been continuing to delve through the Trilogy's JP scripts, and I found another odd change which stuck out to me.

The ENG script actually changed text to instead call out the age gap between Dahlia and Terry.

This line comes after the break, when Terry is discussing in the lobby the fake kidnaping plot that Dahlia masterminded. When Terry says she was 14, Mia has a characteristic response:

F-F-Fourteen!? (I guess you were robbing cradles before diamonds...)

    じゅ‥‥じゅうよんさい! (子どもじゃないの!)

    F-Fourteen! (That's a child, isn't it!?)

You might that, as is often the case, the Japanese text is a hell of a lot vaguer than the ENG, and indeed there is nothing akin to the phrase "cradle robbing" anywhere in it. Mia just reacts at shock at hearing her age, and going off the context, it's not because of Terry being in a relationship with a 14 year old, it's because of the fact that a child masterminded a kidnapping plot. Nowhere in the JP is the six year age gap between the two as much as mentioned, let alone called out.

This makes me curious; was the inclusion of this an intentional decision by Janet Hsu? Or was is just the common mistake of misreading context in the text, and assuming the line was Mia expressing shock at the nature of their relationship? Because there's an argument to be made for both, IMO, and either one could say a lot about how she might have felt about that plot point.

    Any ideas?
