I prefer Apollo's characterization in AA5 to his characterization in AA4 and AA6

    Posted: 24 Jun 2021 09:22 AM PDT

In 5-5 Apollo had a clash of ideals with Phoenix which really outlined the differences between them. For me, this was the peak of his characterization, more so than his appearance in AA4 and more so than his big moment in AA6. Phoenix believes in his clients with everything he's got, while Apollo is more logical about who to place his trust in. Apollo's logical approach is present in AA4 as well, but it never stood out to me until I saw his contrast with Phoenix when they faced off in court.

One of AA4's disappointments was that Apollo had no agency in what he did. He begrudgingly took on cases Phoenix offered him, but had no personal connection with the victims, defendants, prosecutors, or really anyone involved in the case for that matter. This was a complete 180 from Phoenix, who generally had a personal stake in all the cases he took.

It's ironic because Apollo is a character who figures out people's tics but we never really see what makes him tick in AA4.

AA5 is where Apollo really comes into his own as a character. He's thrown into the dilemma of whether he should trust a friend when the facts paint a different picture. He isn't as idealistic as Phoenix and it shows when he accuses Athena of murdering his best friend. You can tell Apollo is struggling on the witness stand and his plea to Phoenix to prove him wrong really hits home. The fact that he is a student of both Phoenix and Kristoph shines through as well, particularly in this pose which is reminiscent of Kristoph's own smug pose.

AA4 Apollo is just going through the motions, but AA5 Apollo is driven by his own motivations. AA6 Apollo wasn't a bad follow-up, but instead of toppling a monarchy I would have preferred learning more about his internal struggles after losing his best friend. Perhaps a flashback incident between him and Clay would have been his motivator to become a lawyer instead of an adopted father from a foreign country.

Seriously, the man was immature as hell. He dumped a beautiful career woman who loved him just because her ex happens to be someone he doesn't like. He literally could've just continued his relationship with Celeste and dismissed that information as Matt's loss.

A funny thing I was thinking about concerning the DGS localization

    Posted: 24 Jun 2021 10:08 PM PDT

So, as far as I know the japanese version of the great ace attorney chronicles still has the same names as the 3ds version compared to the worldwide release. However, the worldwide version has the japanese voices as an option ... So did capcom re-hire the japanese voice actors just to say "herlock sholmes" instead of sherlock ONLY for the localized version? 'Cause if they did this is hilarious.

It's grating how Nick hates prosecutors for doing their job and he himself is doing what's OPPOSED to what he swore to do.

    Posted: 24 Jun 2021 08:53 PM PDT

He can only defend someone who he BELIEVES is innocent? How unethical is that? No, really. He's lucky most of his clients are actually innocent but that Engarde's case just dropped my respect for him.

It's his job to defend his client regardless of his beliefs. It's not for him to decide who's innocent and who's not. He's there to defend his client by ANY LEGAL MEANS necessary - as any good ethical defense attorneys should. If that means he has to manipulate the judge and jury, to appeal to emotions, to make the witnesses question their sanity/memory, to question the veracity and render useless any evidence against his client - then he has to do it. Even if his client admits to killing, ravaging someone, whatever.

If the prosecution is so incompetent that they cannot counter such tactics then the guilt of having a criminal go free is on them - not on the defense. Not that anyone can still call the defendant a "criminal" after trial. If the court finds him innocent then he is innocent.

Him not realizing all these is perhaps the reason why even after winning all those cases, everyone still treats him like a naive child.

Which game should I play next?

    Posted: 24 Jun 2021 08:39 PM PDT

So my last post on this subreddit was me asking for what game in the series I should play next, I believe I gave the choices of Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth, and Ace Attorney Apollo justice. In that time span since my last post I have been able to play both, and they were both excellent imo. So now the question is, what do I play next in the series? Do I loop back and play Investigations 2 just to finish that series up, or should I just move on to Dual Destinies?

Babysitting Au nummer sechs! (spoilers for thy whole series)

    Posted: 24 Jun 2021 10:16 PM PDT

    Sebastian Debeste

Sometimes, Sebastian wonders why his father keeps on letting Edgeworth babysit him instead of him taking care of Sebastian himself, but Sebastian knows to not to question his father, after all! he is The Best! like no one ever was. but, sometimes, you need to find out why.

"Mr. Edgeworth." Sebastian asked him. "yes, Sebastian?" he asked, clearly exhausted from his questioning. "i always wanted to know, why is pops not taking care of me?" Edgeworth almost spit his tea, he had a shocked look. "w-well, it's because he's busy, Sebastian." He said while wiping his mouth with a weird samurai looking tissue box. Sebastian was a bit suspicious of him but he didn't want Edgeworth to yell at him like his father, or worse...

"MR. EDGEWORTH! MR. EDGEWORTH!!!!" Kay barged in his office while making sure she didn't break anything while going inside, Sebastian's known Kay for a week, but feel really close already!

"y-yes Kay? i can hear you..." Edgeworth said while hiding his tissue box, how odd... "C-can we go to the precinct!?" Kay said while walking around the room, Sebastian knows why Kay's doing this, to let their mind just spill out their ideas.

"why is that?" Edgeworth looked at her with a smirk. "well i have two reasons!" Kay said sharing the smirk that Edgeworth has. "ONE! i really wanna meet Ema, there's people playing guitar! TWO! magic show there!" after Kay said that they had a shocked face, like they made a really bad mistake, Edgeworth looks like a wolf that found their prey. "tsk, tsk, tsk Kay, it seems you slipped out your true motive!" Kay looks pink like their shirt. "W-well, i just think-- CAN WE JUST GO AND SEE THE FUNNY MAGICIANS!!??" Kay yelled, their face now filled up with the color red.

    The gangs all here!

soon they go to the precinct and Kay just watched the magic show with some people that Sebastian has never met, later, Sebastian is introduced to Athena, Juniper, Apollo, Nahyuta, Clay, Klavier, Simon, Phoenix, and Ema. and he was told by them that Apollo and Nahyuta's sister, Trucy is one of the magicians.

he heard Ema say "Yeah, two bros, chillin' on the dang chair, five feet apart cause they're not gay!" while looking at a cowboy that's looking at the yellow magician. huh? after seeing a small girl almost lose her body parts from a big box, the three adults start talking while watching the show and all of the kids go in the precinct."how big is this place?" Klavier asked Ema who seemed pretty well informed of the place then any one in the group. "kinda big, but i want to show you guys something..." she said with her voice shaking a bit, wonder why... they go up some stairs and Ema opens some big doors and they were inside one of the crime scenes from a case last month, but to the group, it wasn't, they were oblivious to how much this place means to Ema.

then, the first thing they see is the HUGE organ, everyone was confused why Ema was showing them this but they wait for her to speak. "this place is off limits." Ema said while looking over a small desk. "huh? why are you showing this place if it's off limits?" Nahyuta asked her. "for fun." everyone looked at her. just waiting for her to say the real reason.

"i just wanted to show you guys, that's all..." everyone knew something was there, but they didn't want to ask her more about it. "hey Ema! can you play the organ for us?" Trucy asked her, probably to change the subject. "no, sorry Trucy, everytime i played it the precinct would shake a bit." when Ema said that Athena looked relived. after a couple of minutes of them just talking to each other, making stupid references to vines, and making sure the adults won't hear them Klavier said "lets go back ja? they might be worried sick for us." they all huddled into a group, oldest to youngest, the people at the back have to make sure that the younger ones won't get lost and Ema at the front, after all, she was the oldest among them.

they thought the coast was clear but they saw Ema's sister, Lana, and her partner, Mia. "M-Mia wh-what if she ran away?" Lana asked Mia, she was shaking like crazy, Ema looked shocked. "Lana, i'm sure she can take care of herself, just trust her okay? she isn't five years old anymore." Mia said patting Lana's back. "b-but still, where is she? she's the only family member i have left." she was crying into Mia's arms. there were tears forming in Ema's eyes, the others can see it except the ones at the back."what's--" Klavier hushed Apollo. Athena and Juniper were quiet, Trucy was confused but stayed quiet, Clay is taller then Apollo so he can see what's happening at the front.

"MS. SKYE! h-have you seen Athena and Juniper!? they- i lost sight of them!" Simon yelled, the three of them all there, he looked like an owl that heard lighting for the first time. "it seems i have lost sight of Kay and Sebastian as well..." Edgeworth looked calmer than Simon, but still panicked. "I LOST ALL THE KIDS I'M TAKING CARE OF!!" Phoenix yelled more panicked then Simon. "calm down! we can find them together if we split up--" "are you crazy Mia!? they could be lost in the streets! we can just get a police force to find them and--" now who looks crazy now Lana!? we can't ask a whole police force to find a couple of children!" they were now arguing like an old married couple.

Athena facepalmed at Simon's reaction. Ema looked at everyone and said "lets go back up." "WH-what do you mean let's go back up!? they're worried sick for us!!" Clay whispered-yelled at Ema, everyone nodded at what Clay said."you don't know! it could be a trap for all we know!" everyone looked at her like she was a madman. "a trap for what Fraulein?" Klavier asked her. "w-well for-" "What in tarnation's happenin' here!?" a cowboy man yelled Ema looked like a scared mouse. "w-well Mr. Marshall--" EMA SKYE! THAT'S WERE YOU'VE BEEN!!" Lana yelled at poor Ema..."hey Lana.." she said quietly.

after telling the kids off all of the adults relaxed from the panic and just trying to take in that they almost lost nine kids and that they were just at Lana's office. the kids are all quiet... "look, next time, just ask, okay?" all of the kids nodded.

soon the magic show was over and the sun was setting, it was also time for Apollo to play guitar in front of everyone and his mother. he was obviously nervous and Nahyuta kept on reassuring him but there's something he was missing, his father's hat. he took it from his bag and wore it. now he's ready! he goes to the little stage and sits on the chair his bangs are kind of in the way of his vision but he can see his mother with Zak, and she looks so proud of him already, Apollo probably looked like his father he fixed his position and breathed in and breathed out. it's show time.

"Pretty woman, walking down the street! Pretty woman, the kind i'd like to meet!" this song is special to his mother, it was the song that his father always sang every chance he got, he can see his mother's eyes water.

"Pretty woman, i don't believe you, you're not the truth! no one could look as good as you!" his mother was crying, Nahyuta looked like he was ready for something.

"MERCYYYY!!!" it was loud, but Apollo managed to control it. "Pretty woman, won't you pardon me? Pretty woman, i couldn't help but see! Pretty woman, you look lovely as can be! are you lonely just like me? rawr-r-r-r-r-r-r-r-r-r"

Apollo hates the last part but it's part of the lyrics so he has to.. "Pretty woman, stop a while! Pretty woman talk a while, Pretty woman, give your smile to me!" he feels more confident with his voice."Pretty woman, yeah, yeah, yeah! Pretty woman, look my way, Pretty woman, say you'll stay with me" "cause i need you, i'll treat you riiightt... come to me baabyy be mine tooniiight!" he at the home stretch!

"Pretty woman! don't you walk on byyy Pretty woman! don't make me cryyyy Pretty woman! don't walk awayyyy heyyy....." he breaths "okay, if that's the way it must be, okay." Apollo feels like a king or a god!

"i guess i'll go on home, it's late, there'll be tomorrow night, but wait..." Apollo pauses. " what do i seeee? is she walking baack to meeee? yeah, she's walking back to mee! ohhhhh, ohhhhh, Pretty woman!" when he ended the crowd clapped and did a standing ovation for him, he looks at Klavier, who looks star struck from his singing.

that was a fun day for everyone but the show's just starting...

that was pretty fucking fun to write! also, tell me what you think please! love hearing it, also sorry for making the Sebastian part small, i just can't write young Sebby so i kept it short and gave you two things to read! hope you like! ;D

    TT CASE 2 SPOILERS

    Posted: 24 Jun 2021 04:23 PM PDT

In the second case of the 3rd game Bullard was murdered with the cause of death being blunt force trauma to the head. I thought that the sword was the murder weapon but then I remembered that atmey didn't know about the statue until after the murder and also couldn't have known about the sword because of that. So I'm just wondering what the murder weapon could have been.

40 Cases, 40 Days - Day 8: Turnabout Big Top

    Posted: 24 Jun 2021 08:01 AM PDT

And the hot takes just keep on comin', boys. Today's case is Turnabout Big Top, a name that lives in infamy among the community. This case is one of the series' most reviled. Just about everyone in the western half of the fandom has a problem with it. The characters are annoying. The writing has holes in it that don't make sense. There's a creepy love triangle between two older men and a 16 year old girl. Surely no one could ever love this disaster, right? Well, do you know who does? Shu Takumi, series creator and director of the original trilogy and the upcoming Great Ace Attorney Chronicles. He said in an interview/blurb on an official Ace Attorney website, way way back in the day, that this is one of his most-loved cases. He acknowledged it has faults that were his own fault, but that it's ultimately "first or second place of my own personal favorites," at least of the cases written up to that point. Personally? I respect the fuck out of that opinion. Turnabout Big Top is a lot of fun, and if we were going off of just the original GBA trilogy (i.e. no Rise from the Ashes or the post-T&T games), it's probably in my Top 5 favorites. The things that other people had a problem with in this case never really bothered me, and there's a lot of strong aspects that I think are overlooked.

Let's start with the elephant in the room. Max Galactica is 21. Benjamin Woodman is 31. They both propose to Regina Berry, who is 16. Yes, I know, I know. It's a little fucked. That said, I knew going into this case that Japan's policy on things like this is different from America and the rest of the world. As long as they had the blessing of her father, I'm fairly certain Max and Ben both were within legal (though maybe not moral) right to marry Regina. Either way, that's not the point. The point is, this triangle is supposed to be shocking. You're supposed to be thrown by it. It frankly is even more shocking if you assume Regina is 18, because the real conflict is between Regina's physical age and her mental age. Regina's on her way to adulthood and is about to be making these big decisions about her life… but thinks that a puppet is the one proposing to her. That her boyfriend can actually fly. That people literally turn into stars when they die. Physically, Regina might be an adult according to some country's definition, but mentally she's not even a teenager, but a child, and that's the fucked up thing. Her father has sheltered her and spoiled her perhaps a little too much, and the circus has proved to be a problematic place for a child to learn about the world. And that part was very much intentional. It ties directly into the ending of the case and the reason this whole tragic event happened. More on that later.

I'll also say that the big logical holes people point out in this case never honestly seemed like holes to me. For example, I've heard people say it's dumb that Franziska argues that the killer flew away. Listen, she's not saying the killer could literally fly. She's suggesting that he used the same special effects Max uses in the show. As for how there was no obvious sign of special effects equipment at the scene, well, that's a legitimate argument, but it doesn't change the fact that the killer didn't leave any footprints when they left the scene, and there was eyewitness testimony corroborating it. The killer flying away with special effects is a far better explanation than "the killer walked away but didn't leave footprints". The bigger one people have a problem with is the Max Galactica cape magically attaching to the bust. Admittedly, there is zero evidence to prove this is how it happened. But once again, just like with Franny's explanation being better than the alternative, this explanation is better than Franny's. If the alternative is "the killer flew to and from the crime scene without visible signs of stage rigging and wires being used", I'll gladly accept "the killer tossed a 300lb bust on top of the victim's head and when that happened the cape he wore there somehow got snagged on it."

Now let's get into the characters. I believe I said before that I have a higher tolerance for "annoying" characters than the Average Joe. As a result, I really liked all the characters in this case. The corny jokes and strange gimmicks didn't get to me, and instead what I found is a series of characters with genuine emotion behind them, legitimately funny and charming moments when interacting with them, and some of the series' most visually unique designs so far. The least-good of the bunch is probably Ben & Trilo Quist. He's not written too seriously and is more like a gimmick character, but he's still a good gimmick character. The mild-mannered ventriloquist who gets overshadowed by his loud-mouthed puppet is an old gag, but it's a classic that still gets a sensible chuckle out of me. Regina is also a lot of fun to play around with. Everyone instantly being charmed by her cuteness is a fun gimmick. The bit where she asks Phoenix to find her stage outfit and every response "choice" was some variant of "Yes" is one of my all-time favorites. Max Galactica's seeming narcissism might rub people the wrong way, but ultimately that's just a stage persona of his that makes it easier for him to mystify and impress people with his illusions. Deep down he's actually a decent guy. A farm boy who worked hard to make his dream of becoming the world's best magician come true, and actually succeeded. He's understandably proud of his accomplishments, and only shows them off to try and inspire his fellow performers to achieve similarly lofty goals.

The highlights of the bunch, however, are Moe the Clown and Acro. I adore Moe the Clown. His jokes hit this perfect level of "so bad, it's good" humor that I love. Every scene with him is a blast. Maya seeming to share my enjoyment of him while Phoenix's brain slowly dies due to the terrible puns is a riot. In court, Moe's incessant terrible jokes can actually cause Phoenix to lose the case if he makes him tell an unnecessary one by pressing certain testimony, and that's the funniest thing ever. Guilty by puns. Brilliant. But Moe's more than just good-bad jokes. There's a real sadness and heart to his character, too. Despite being a jokester, he takes his plans to take over the reins from Russel very seriously. And being with the circus the longest, he's seen all the things that've gone wrong with it over the years, how Russel's sheltering of Regina has backfired, and how easily this most recent incident could've been the end of it for good. But despite that, and despite getting constantly ridiculed for his jokes, he still puts in tons of work day in and day out perfecting his act.

But the true standout of the bunch is the case's villain, Acro. Acro's character is so understated but so perfect. A rare case where I believe the killer acted irrationally, but for a completely understandable reason. In my opinion, Acro is one of the most emotionally complex villains in series history, at least regarding his motive for committing murder. See, most killers in this series, ultimately they wind up killing out of simple fear or self-preservation, in order to prevent another crime they committed from coming to light or protect their own life. So far, we've seen this in Sahwit, White, Vasquez, Wellington, and Miney, and partially in Von Karma and Gant, and this trope would continue going forward. But Acro is one of only two killers in the series, I believe, who killed purely out of grief. Acro lost his only blood relative and closest friend, his legs, and his ability to follow his passion all in one day. An acrobat who can't walk; a living contradiction. Worse yet, Acro had to confront the person responsible for this tragedy every single day of his life. Every day, Regina would bring him meals and tell him how wonderful it was that his little brother Bat was watching over everyone as a star. And how well the circus was doing without him and his brother there to perform their acrobatic stunts. So happy after everything that happened, when he was still so sad. It drove him crazy. Sure, he could have told her off and explained that she was the one responsible, and that what happened was a terrible thing. But like many grieving people do, he bottled it up instead. It doesn't help that Russell wanted to keep Regina sheltered, and Acro respected him and thought of him as a father. But, eventually, bottling it all up made him snap and lash out. He hatched a plan to kill the person who made the worst day in his life happen and rubbed salt in the wound every single day. He knew it was wrong. Regina might be a teenager, but mentally she's still a little girl. But he did it anyway, because living with the sadness and doing nothing was even worse. And in the end, his choice caused even more tragedy for himself, because instead of killing the one responsible, he killed the last family he had left, his "father" Russell Berry. And with that, ladies and gentlemen, there is truly nothing left of Acro. This is the Acro we meet in the case. Smiling on the outside, dead on the inside.

Turnabout Big Top is so underrated it's criminal. While I acknowledge the weird issues it has, there is just so much power and charm to the plot and characters just under the surface that I love it. It's no finale, but it's a lot of fun and damn does it hit hard.

    Overall Rating - 4 / 5
