Posted: 26 Jun 2021 07:10 PM PDT I just finished case 3 and I get it's a game and the laws of the legal system doesn't really make sense, but couldn't Phoenix have just mentioned the fact that Dee tried to sic her mafia squad on him and Maya and that as she attempted to commit murder, it's likely that she had previously succeeded in actually committing murder. I was fully expecting him to turn around and mention the attempted murder. But it just never comes up again. What was the point of it? All it did was confuse me. Like wouldn't the mafia member who attempted to murder the defense be the prime suspect??? [link] [comments]

40 Cases, 40 Days - Day 10: Turnabout Memories Posted: 26 Jun 2021 04:00 PM PDT So, how do you go forward after an ending as seemingly ultimate as JFA's? Easy! You go backward instead. Backward in time, that is! This is Turnabout Memories, the intro to T&T and the first example of what would quickly become a series-defining trope: the flashback case. Every game from here up until the 3DS games includes a case that at least partially takes place a number of years before the present day. And why are we going back to the past? Why, because of the other series-defining thing introduced in this case, of course: alternative playable characters! We're playing as Mia instead of Phoenix this time, specifically during her second ever trial. This is a feature I've always been a sucker for. Even though Ace Attorney takes place mostly in first-person perspective, changing which character the player is projecting onto and whose internal monologue you hear goes a surprisingly long way to make things feel fresh. As a bonus, this is also the first intro case that feels like an actual case. While other intro tropes like basic game system tutorials, easy testimony, a small cast, and no investigation segments were kept from The First Turnabout and The Lost Turnabout, the oft-maligned intro cutscene killer spoiler trope was nixed for this case, meaning it retains at least some of the mystery aspect the other cases are known for, though the small cast alone should still make it pretty obvious who the killer is. That wasn't the only trope they nixed, though. They also decided to let the intro case prosecutor actually be halfway competent and somewhat intimidating. Seriously, Winston Payne in his youth is no slouch. He makes strong arguments and basically bullies the inexperienced Mia. I wonder if he would've stayed like this forever, had Mia not destroyed his glorious pompadour with her final piece of evidence (unironically one of my favorite moments in the series). On a side note, the former "Rookie Killer" and his 100% appearance rate in the Ace Attorney intros (he or one of his relatives is always the prosecutor in the main titles; in the Investigations games, he instead makes cameos with minor speaking parts) is one of my favorite little recurring gags. It's always funny to see how he's going to be portrayed in each new game. That said, I will not be saying his name or mentioning him at all again during this series of retrospectives, because my other favorite running gag of his is how no one seems to remember his name or having met him before. Now on to a man we actually have met before: Phoenix Wright! In a surprising twist, our favorite spiky-haired lawyer is the accused in this case. To make matters more interesting, he seems more like a lovesick wimp than his usual self. Y'know, it occurs to me I haven't talked much about Phoenix as a character up until this point. It's kinda hard when you're used to experiencing the case from his point of view, and having him act as more-or-less your self-insert. In any case, what I've always kinda loved about Phoenix's character is how there isn't much to it. He's really just a regular guy who wants to protect people because he thinks it's the right thing to do. He doesn't have some crazy backstory where he was born in a country that worships spirit mediums but had to leave when his father was killed in an elevator and then later in life went to prison in order to protect a little girl from being accused of murdering her mother or something like that. He just got bullied in grade school and had a really shitty girlfriend experience in college, and both times it was a defense attorney who saved and befriended him, so he decided to become one too. Speaking of shitty girlfriends, it's time to talk about this game's best villain, and possibly the series' best villain. A bit weird to be saying that about an intro case villain, but don't you worry your precious little heart. You'll be seeing her again soon enough. Without further ado: Dahlia Hawthorne. Dahlia is a fucking masterpiece of character design. Every aspect of her is just this perfect blend of beautiful, yet haunting. Her eyes are so wide and glistening, but they're so different from the other characters in terms of design they just feel… creepy. Her soft pink-and-white outfit, edged in ornate floral patterns and frills, is pleasant and easy to look at… but then you have her hair, which is done up nicely, but a deep, blood red in color. Her theme song, Distant Traces of Beauty, is this soft and gentle melody, but constantly has this droning, dark undertone to it, and again, is so out of place that it just feels unsettling. Hell, even her name fits this perfectly. Dahlia Hawthorne is a name that could only belong to either a Disney princess or a female serial killer. Guess which one Feenie's precious little Dollie is! :) Now, the characters in-universe, especially the men, seem to only be able to see Dahlia's beautiful aspects. But, thanks to us, the player, being an omniscient outside observer of this world, and thanks to us seeing things from Mia's perspective (she seems to have met Dahlia before…), we're able to see her for what she really is. The second she takes the stand, you know something about her is off. To what extent? We're not sure. But we can see it, and we can hear it. Distant traces of Or so we thought. But Mia keeps pushing. She doesn't let Dahlia squirm away due to a seeming lack of evidence. With one last deduction and triumphant bluff, she figures out that Phoenix was the person she first intended to kill that day, with a poisoned bottle of his cold medicine. She shoves the bottle in Dahlia's smug face and gives her an ultimatum: admit you poisoned it, or eat some and prove me wrong. And that's when we really see what Dahlia really is. What could be beneath the cold, heartless meangirl persona? Pure. Rage. Dahlia snaps, her dark, haunting eyes turn a pure, glowing white, the courtroom behind her turns dark, and the little butterflies floating around her incinerate. It's only then we see that we're not dealing with a killer, but a monster. It might seem a waste to blow a villain like that on an hour-long tutorial case, but Dahlia says herself that the two of you will meet again. And that's Turnabout Memories. It's a great little romp carried by its villain, but ultimately held back by its status as an intro case. The introduction and first takedown of Dahlia are amazing, but with such a short runtime and such easy testimony it feels like you only get a taste of greatness before it's all over, the game more or less telling you "Play the later cases to get the rest of the story!" And the cast really is too small for my tastes. In fact, Dahlia is the only new character here, unless you're counting the deceased or the prosecutor's haircut (also deceased). In order to improve on Memories in any substantial way, Ace Attorney would have to break even further away from the restrictions of the intro case format and do something wildly different. For now, though, we have a too-short-but-so-sweet little gem of an introduction to the arc plot of T&T. Overall Score - 3 / 5 [link] [comments]

Posted: 26 Jun 2021 11:59 AM PDT Like we seriously need her to come back in the next Ace Attorney. Ema was in Apollo Justice, Pearl was in Dual Destinies, and Maya was in Spirit of Justice. Kay is the only side kick not to have returned yet. I think her being Miles personal covert op agent would be awesome, and a great way to spin into another Investigations. Doesn't even have to be edgeworth. Just "Kay Faraday: Ace Investigations" [link] [comments]
Posted: 26 Jun 2021 03:03 PM PDT Actually thought he seemed like a pretty chill guy outside of his "gamer talk". Liked the court interactions with him. Don't think he deserves all the hate he gets. [link] [comments]
