Do you consider made-up things such as incuritis, atroquinine, ect. to be a failure on the part of the writers?

    Posted: 20 Jul 2020 07:08 PM PDT

Disclaimer: I'm not claiming that it IS a failure on the writers' part, I'm on the fence and am wondering what your thoughts are.

I was in middle school way back when I played the original games on DS, and I always found it cool to learn new things like potassium cyanide or double jeopardy (even if that wasn't really used right lol) and how the writers made use of it.

But then you get into Apollo Justice, and suddenly a lot of stuff is made-up to fit the puzzle of the case.

    • Atroquinine, a poison that is EXTREMELY potent, very slow acting, and detectable with a spray.
    • Incuritis ("inflammation of the incure" apparently), a disease with no known cure except from:
    • A Borginian cocoon, which can be made into either a cure for the disease OR into a toxin if you screw it up. Like its namesake, it can only be found in:
    • Borginia, a fake European country
    • Additionally, Apollo has a rare, inheritable genetic trait that makes him notice and reciprocate involuntary twitches, which in turn can be noticed via a bracelet made of a special alloy that fits perfectly to the wearer's skin. I LIKE that concept and even then find the latter part in particular unable to suspend my disbelief.

In a world where spiritual power and channeling exists, I get that it can appear a silly complaint. But I can't help but find it cheap when the writers cannot come up with a convoluted plot without having to make up important pieces of the plot. I will note however that I don't actually mind fake countries, and love how Allebahst and Babahl was used in AAI.

I only just thought about all this recently after playing DGS1 (and the two translated cases of DGS2), where I can't help but roll my eyes at these amazing forensic devices Sherlock Holmes and Iris invent that were never used for the next century. Unless these actually exist, in which case please call me out on it.

Question about plot of 3-5 (Bridge to the Turnabout)

    Posted: 20 Jul 2020 12:28 PM PDT

I'm not sure how to interpret the thing with Godot and blood on the dagger.
He submits it as evidence, even saying "Obviously, Your Honor... But do you not notice something else?". So he did notice the blood beforehand, or at least someone else told him about it.

Then he looks surprised/nervous after Phoenix says "Have you forgotten that the blood has already been tested?". However, that could simply mean "ok, Trite is not that dumb", as there are not a lot of different animated emotions in this game.

Then he says things like "Well, if I really were the killer... ...I could've washed the blade off and then planted another person's blood on it" and "In any case, there's one thing I can guarantee, Trite. That blood... It doesn't belong to me. Not a chance!"

Here are some things which are bothering me:

    1. Why didn't Godot search for the dagger by himself? He knew that he was attacked with something which was stained with his blood, and looks like he had enough time.He had even more time when his "real" investigation started - he could order the detectives to check other areas and properly search the garden during the day.
    2. Did he not wipe his blood because the detective (who found it) has already seen the dagger and it would be suspicious? Or did he want to leave a clue for Phoenix?
    3. If Godot deliberately left a clue - did he have the whole trial pre-planned in his mind (aside from blood on the lantern and Mia's appearance), or did he have to constantly improvise as Phoenix?
    4. Usually Godot was able to carefully parry and redirect Phoenix' accusations, but with "the blood doesn't belong to me" he was straight up lying, which I found strange. Was it just part of testing if Phoenix was "the real deal", or was he caught off guard and had to answer something other than "yep that was me"?
    5. Godot wanted to see Phoenix fail (at least, he thought he wanted). What would be the ideal outcome of the trial for him at that moment? Wait until Phoenix couldn't prove anything and then turn himself in?Given that Godot himself didn't allow the judge to end the trial before the killer was found, I doubt that he would simply walk away after the court.

I'm not surprised if some of these are simply plot holes (especially after the thing with swinging the body under the bridge, aargh), but still will be glad to hear your thoughts.

UPD: All quotes are from the transcript, so I hope they were exactly as in the game.
UPD: I played the whole trilogy, so spoilers for these games are OK.
