my head canons that make the games more fun to think about

    Posted: 03 Jul 2020 09:00 AM PDT

Apollo and klavier practicing chords of steel together

Apollo stands on a box at the defense stand. That's why he looks the same height as everyone else there. Nobody brings up how tall he is cause he's secretly insecure about it.

Sebastian and Robin were best friends at the themis legal academy.

Athena met phoenix in Europe when he was crossing the street and she almost hit him with her car.

Larry, Edgeworth, and Phoenix went to Disney world together at some point. god knows when. but at some point.

Apollo likes Junie back, but is oblivious to the fact that she likes him. he's the perfect picture of stoic, you'd never have a clue he felt that way. until Athena brings it up to him one day when work is slow. "You really haven't realized? she's had a crush on you for ages dude." and then he breaks down and gets all fuzzy and blushy about it. (firm klapollo stan here but god knows I've given up on even getting klavier back in a game.)

Simon (aai2) and Max Galactica look kinda identical to eachother. not really a headcanon but just something I noticed.

everyone speculates over ||the wicked scar on kristophs hand|| but it turns out he got it as a kid, trying to follow along to the baking in Piece of Cake.

That was actually kinda fun. might try again sometime.

Apollo in Dual Destinies: a Short History Lesson

    Posted: 03 Jul 2020 04:16 PM PDT

So I've had the official Dual Destinies artbook for several years, and I just love it. I so badly wish that the book for Spirit of Justice had been given an English version, too. There's a ton of interesting, cool stuff featured in the book, giving a lot of insight into the ideas that went into the game's design and development. A fairly lengthy interview with director Takeshi Yamazaki and lead character artist Takuro Fuse toward the end, too, which includes some more little details not mentioned elsewhere in the book.

I've written a lot on this sub about my thoughts on how Apollo has been handled as a character in the two games following his debut. It's not exactly a secret that I have a fairly low opinion of Yamazaki and his writers' aptitude for writing Apollo.

Still, though - I've been looking through the artbook again lately, and as always, I just love looking at all the different design concepts and writing ideas it includes. So, I felt like throwing together a post to detail some of what was considered for Apollo, during the game's development.

    APOLLO'S STORY ROLE

The artbook makes one thing very clear: Apollo was never being treated as a central character throughout the game's development process. The focus was always on Phoenix's return to the courtroom, and Athena's introduction. Any time Apollo comes up in descriptions of the story-writing process, he's always secondary, and has much of his role taking place off-screen. Yamazaki speaks at one point of a very specific desire of his to have Phoenix and Apollo face off against one another (we know, Yamazaki, we know.), which ultimately materialized in the game's final trial, with Apollo testifying against Athena, desperate for Phoenix to prove him wrong and finally rid him of the doubts he's been experiencing, related to Athena. Other ideas came up during development, however.

    OLD JACKET, NEW LOOKS

You know the space centre jacket Apollo spends much of the game wearing? There's some interesting history behind that. I've scanned and edited together some of my favourite bits. Take a look here, and here!

    APOLLO AS AN ANTAGONIST

With Phoenix largely returning to his original appearance and overall demeanour in Dual Destinies, there was a deliberate effort to give Apollo a major change of some kind, to contrast him with his boss. "The Dark Age of the Law" was a factor in play here. Early on, there were plans to have "The Dark Age" represented by Simon Blackquill on the prosecution's side, and also a villainous defence attorney character on the defence's side. This defence attorney only made it as far as a couple of concept sketches, but would have been a slightly older woman with significantly looser morals than Phoenix and company, who would seduce Apollo and turn him gradually over to her way of thinking, which would ultimately put him at odds with Phoenix and Athena. Take a look!

In this story idea, Apollo's jacket would ultimately have been one of the things to help him cool down and reflect on the immoral nature of the older attorney's methods, bringing him back home to the Wright Anything Agency in the end.

3 Law Students back streaming Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney starting at 7pm PST today

    Posted: 03 Jul 2020 06:08 PM PDT

Hello, again! Last week, we streamed the first case of T&T and had a pretty great time with all the people from this sub who came by to hang out with us. We're planning on continuing playing through this week, except this time starting with case 3 of the first game since I was informed by one of you guys that it would be better that we played through the first two totally before going any further in the 3rd, and we've already individually either played through the first 2 cases of the first game or watched up to that point in the anime.

Like last week, we're gonna play through the game and comment on how it compares to the actual field of criminal law as certified law students who are currently actually practicing in that field. We are more than happy to field questions or insights, or just even talk about whatever comes to mind. Feel free to come check us out if you either want to get a bit of a peek under the hood of the profession, or if you just want to come hang out with a couple of dudes who have nothing better to do with their Friday evening. Also if this kind of weekly-ish advertisement-y post is too much, please let me know and I won't do it anymore.

Like not "unpopular characters you actually like" I'm talking about characters that are obviously not written to be liked, but you like them anyways.
