Badly drawing every character from AA1 to (hopefully) force myself to improve. #3 and #4: Larry Butz and Cindy Stone

Am I the only one here who loves Ace Attorney *despite* it being Animeish?

    Posted: 22 Jun 2020 12:39 PM PDT

Preface: I adore these games, I have artwork on my walls, have played all the games multiple times, have a huge collection of merchandise including the limited edition DSi console - and so forth!

I am 34 and not an anime fan; I have tried watching various series and movies over the years but find it tiresome and a bit the tropes/cliches a bit cringey. Fair enough that people love it, but I don't.

But it's only since the internet age that I realised just how anime-ish (there's probably a proper word) the series is. Seems if you like AA you probably are also into Dragonball and the like. Whereas for me AA is really the only Japanese media I enjoy.

SO many of the cliches are represented in game, the impossibly positive bubbly girl sidekick (Maya, Kay, Athena), the borderline paedophile old pervert (Hotti, Kudo), the "out of his depth", relatable Everyman protagonist with a heart of gold (Phoenix, Apollo). The more attractive, aloof rival (Edgeworth, Klavier, Barnham).

I am not saying tropes don't exist in other mediums - they do. I just didn't actually get half the references/cliches in AA until much later when I watched some anime and recognised how similar it was.

Am I the only one who loves the series deeply but can't stand similar things?

    Investigations case 3, some thoughts

    Posted: 22 Jun 2020 08:00 PM PDT

I'm playing through the first investigations game blind right now and I just finished the third case. It's become habit by now to check tier lists just because it's interesting to see how people feel about the cases as well, and I always skim them until I spot the placement of the case I just played - but I was quite surprised to see that many people disliked I-3, commonly putting it at the bottom of the tier list. What problems do people have with it? Comments I would have would be:

    • Edgeworth getting attacked by the Proto Badger made me jump because I wasn't concentrating during the intro (It did make the case pretty damn memorable though!)

    • It did get rather messy when discussing when the suits were allocated, and I didn't really like Lang during the investigations, since he slowed everything down

    • Wendy Oldbag

    • Neither Lance nor his girlfriend were particularly likeable at all

    • In retrospect, the twists were pretty predictable, but still satisfying

However... I did think the case was quite fun to cruise through. I didn't notice any huge logic jumps and the difficulty seemed okay. It was definitely a step up from the second case in terms of overall quality imo. I'm interested to see what people dislike about it!

Am I able to restart a chapter?

I stopped playing in the middle of chapter 5 and it's been like a month, so I probably forgot everything
