3rd Year Law Students streaming Trials and Tribulations

    Posted: 26 Jun 2020 07:16 PM PDT

Hello, everybody! A few friends from law school and I decided that it might be fun to stream some Ace Attorney and talk a little bit about some of the differences between how the game is and how actual law is practiced. All of us are rising 3Ls (3rd year students) at McGeorge School of Law in Sacramento, CA, and all of us are currently working in the field of criminal law. I've played a bit of the first game, and completed Justice for All, but the other two are completely new to the series. Feel free to come check us out if you either want to get a bit of a peek under the hood of the profession, or if you just want to come hang out.

Godot > Abby. For the concept of revenge and tragedy, one "villain" works, the other doesn't.

[AAI2-1 Spoilers] This may have been brought up before, but is there any explanation for why Edgeworth didn't realize this right away?

    Posted: 26 Jun 2020 02:08 PM PDT

    https://preview.redd.it/dy79907wjb751.png?width=682&format=png&auto=webp&s=fe3df68cc2885ba473463a88dde2023b103b8764

Edgeworth instantly freaked out when he saw the design on de Killer's card in 2-4. Yet here he is, seeing the exact same symbol on his jacket, and he can't figure out who this person is. Now it isn't odd at all to me that Edgeworth didn't identify de Killer's voice: he never met him in person, and it's not a stretch to headcanon the radio as distorting de Killer's voice badly enough that it doesn't strongly resemble his in-person voice, or that de Killer was using a voice modulator. In fact, in 2-4 Phoenix didn't seem to be able to link the radio voice to the in-person voice of de Killer when he was being a pretend butler.

But how is Edgeworth not reacting at all to the seashells on his jacket, given that he immediately recognized them in 2-4? With how memorable a case 2-4 was for him and how strongly he reacted to seeing the cards, I can't accept that he simply forgot what it looked like.

How does the judge's Canadian brother talk like in the original Japanese version?

    Posted: 26 Jun 2020 12:49 PM PDT

I assume it's some type of Japanese "redneck" dialect. But how does it play out? Where is the inspiration taken from?

Just finished up "Justice for All", feeling a bit let down

    Posted: 26 Jun 2020 09:14 AM PDT

I bought the Switch 3-pack while it was (is?) on sale. I'll start off by saying I don't mean any disrespect if Justice For All is your favorite game; there was a lot of silliness I liked about it.

But after falling in love with the original AA, I spent so much of JfA being annoyed and frustrated. Maybe I'm dumb, but I found this game needlessly punishing, compared to the first installment. So many instances of presenting

    • the right evidence to the wrong prompt,
    • virtually identical evidence to the right prompt,
    • two pieces of essential evidence out of order (B then A, instead of A then B)

Also irksome: needing to go back and press pieces of testimony in a different order to trigger the next sequence. Additionally, I felt the game didn't do much to clue you in when you were missing evidence, and while I found the Psyche-Locks as well as the ability to present profiles a worthwhile new mechanic, I felt the overall implementation to be clunky and unrewarding. I won't even get into what a slog "Turnabout Big Top" and "Farewell, My Turnabout" were.

I'm really looking forward to Trials and Tribulations as the consensus seems to be that it's strong, but man did Justice for All take the wind out of my sails a bit after the brilliance of the first game. Anyone else have a similar experience?

What are your personal thoughts on Tristen Turnbull? Did you think he was a well-developed character onscreen?

Who do you want in the tutorial case for aa7?

    Posted: 26 Jun 2020 05:42 PM PDT

[AAI2-2 spoilers] personally I'd love to see frank sahwit get convicted again for the tutorial case. He was supposedly about to get out of prison during the imprisoned turnabout, and it would be a great callback especially if the game is for the 20th anniversary of the first game

Would you like to see any callback characters as defendants? (Or as villans?) the tutorial case of trials and tribulations is my favourite case in the series, so I might be a little biased, but I wanna hear your thoughts!

Hey, how do y'all picture the characters voices as sounding? Do you picture any voices characters as having voices that are definitely far from however they were supposed to sound?

    Posted: 26 Jun 2020 11:07 AM PDT

I've realized that for a lot of the characters I kind of read them in voices that they definitely wouldn't have at all.

The second Klavier used a hint of German in Apollo Justice, I immediately started picturing him as sounding like Magic Brian from The Adventure Zone. As the game has become a bit heavier, it's gotten kinda weird to picture him sounding like Brian but I just. Can't stop no matter how hard I try. It is so hard to take him seriously like this but it's too late for me to change my ways so he'll always have that weird voice for me.

I'm just curious to know how you all picture the different characters as sounding, and if any of y'all end up running into similar issues when you play.

How likely is AA7 or a new game in general? really?

    Posted: 26 Jun 2020 01:53 PM PDT

I'm sorry if this post is negative, but I just don't know what the future is for ace attorney, at least in the west. I also don't want to appear as impatient, I just love the series so much I want to see more games. Anyway, Here are my reasons

    The bad

    1. The timeline: The biggest gap between AA games was from 2004 to 2007 (transitioning from TT to AJ). If you include the dgs, we haven't gotten a game in the past three years, nor was one announced. If you exclude dgs, it's a four year gap.

    2. The post-trilogy series: Capcom have ported the trilogy to all major platforms, but not DD, AJ, SOJ and AAI (except they're on mobile). Maybe they'll get added later?

    The good!

    1. Platform availability: Ace attorney has been ported to pc, PS4, Xbox one and switch. This means that more people will likely try out the franchise, thus giving Capcom a reason to make more. I'm not sure about all the other platforms, but ace attorney held no.1 in charts on switch for a month or two.

    2. Japan: since AA is a lot more popular in Japan, it would be more likely for them to get one, which hopefully means that Capcom might actually put in the resources to localise

    3. A new type of ace attorney: What I mean by this is that they'll try and redefine what ace attorney can be, because they have a lot more power in hardware. Especially since they opened up to non-nintendo console's. I'd say that the reason a new AA is taking so long is that they're trying to reinvent ace attorney. That begs the question, what would they do to change up the formula? I think it's impossible to say for certain where they would move the series, but I'm thinking a fully 3d 360° investigation sequence, mixed in with the familiar courtroom sequence. Again I'm not sure where they would move the series.

    4. Loose story threads: AJ spoilers Apollo and trucys storyline is incomplete. They never found out about each other. Granted I guess they could skip over that, but that would remain a big pothole imo

I would really like to know other people's thoughts on this, as most AA7 posts discuss the game and not the likelihood itself. Please feel free to counter some of my points / opinions!!!

Edit: Thanks to u/galactar7 for reminding me that the anime is still alive, and that Takeshi Yamazaki (who made investigations, DD and son) stepped down from his position, so keep those points in mind

Luke Triton: Ace Attorney is the crossover sequel we deserve

    Posted: 26 Jun 2020 07:26 PM PDT

Just finished 2nd case in Trial and Tribulations, and just want to share my theories (which were wrong lol)

    Posted: 26 Jun 2020 04:24 PM PDT

    1) So, the first one may be dumb, but I think it still holds some water (at least a little bit), and that's at the start of the case when we still weren't sure about who the thief was (didn't think much of Ron, as he seemed to me to be out of his mind { PPS: Is it just me or does Ron look 100% like a woman? xd }). So I looked at the picture of the Masko de Masqo and then at the profiles of people. First who jumped to mind was the Ace Detective, but I immediately cleared him of any suspicion because of his long nose (guess I guessed wrong lol). But I remember that it gave me an option to choose HIM as a mask demasque, but was sure it was a jebait and when it wasn't it weirded me out.

    2) When we first met Desirée, I had a small suspicion she was actually The Mask, cus she likes to ride on motorcycles -> likes adrenalin -> stealing things is... exciting, I guess? And also because she lives in a fkin home full of thieves toys. Also towards the endgame, it gave you an option to pick an accomplice. So I had to hold myself from yeeting her into the guilty verdict. My theory for why she wanted to help him? She secretly knew about her husband being fired and also she spoke to Wright about how he worked as a slave, so she held some grudge against the Boss.

    3) This isn't exactly a theory but It weirded me a little that you don't even once show somebody sprites (the blue think with prices of treasures), which I, of course, showed to everyone xd

That's about it, enjoying this game to the fullest, and will definitely play the rest of the series. (and sorry for the wall of text)

What kind of psychology themes or disorders do you want to see used in future Athena cases?

    Posted: 26 Jun 2020 10:58 AM PDT

Small things like Athena helping Jinxie with her trauma in 5-2 or bigger things like a witness hiding that he has multiple personalities in 6-4, where Athena gets to use her expertise.
