A Scene Analysis -- The Ending of Farewell, my Turnabout's First Trial (Major Spoilers for JFA)

    Posted: 17 Jun 2020 09:53 PM PDT

There are many reasons why the fans of this series love it so dearly, but for me personally, I've always loved the incredible grasp of tension and tone.

The ending of the first trial is probably one of, if not my favorite moment in the entire series. There's so much care that went into the editing, audio design, sprite work, and especially the writing and framing. I'm going to start from the line "You couldn't establish that the witness was the culprit. Please let it go, Mr. Wright."

This is our first queue into the absolute hopelessness felt multiple times throughout this case. The desperation has been building as comedy and generally uplifting comments have taken a backseat.

Phoenix begins to plead desperately with the Judge, but his cries fall on deaf ears. Perhaps literally, considering his age. For this little segment, the writers had to make sure we feel Phoenix's desperation with him, and that they did with the beautiful editing and audio. The Judge declares Court to be Adjourned, and a special sound effect is played, a heavier version of the Judge's gavel sound effect. It abruptly tears into the already heavy trial music, cutting it off. Another queue into desperation.

We cut to a wide-shot, and for the first time in the series, we see a Courtroom without a gallery and a judge. The absolute silence really helps to sell the desperation. They probably could've gotten away with playing a reminiscence theme of some kind, but the silence really sells the scene. We fade out of the full view into darkness before fading into an empty Judge's bench.

First and foremost, there are no abrupt transitions used in this entire sequence, with one exception. The slow fades in and out really are just a genius way to tell our minds that the situation is beyond desperate. Second off, seeing an empty judge's bench, a screen that has never been seen up to this point is a brilliant way to signal to us that we've lost. The trial is over, and with that, Maya's life is as well.

We fade out to darkness and into Phoenix, and, incredibly, we see a new sprite. One of Phoenix gripping his hair desperately, with his face hidden from the camera. I absolutely love this. This is my favorite part of the whole scene. This is the first and last new court animation Phoenix gets in the entire series. Even the 3D games. On the limited GBA cartridges, every last pixel counts, and the fact that the developers went to the trouble of inserting an entirely new sprite to sell his desperation says a lot about the care that went into this scene. But, it makes sense.

Maya is one of the biggest driving forces in Phoenix's life. While she's gone in Kurain, he shuts down for a while before Rise from the Ashes. They are dependant on each other, and in the moment, he believes he's lost her. None of the existing animations could've truly conveyed that desperation, and the addition of this one is genius.

As the background fades away, Phoenix's internal dialogue kicks in and we can feel him struggling to come to terms with this. His dear assistant is gone.

But suddenly, a flash of light interrupts the darkness, illuminating the background once again. Edgeworth chimes in, offering a small beacon of hope that is carried into the next investigation. This is that one sudden transition I was talking about. It shows how this tiny scrap of hope is all Phoenix needs to get back on his feet and it foreshadows how Edgeworth talks Phoenix through his character arc later on.

This scene is clever and is key to the incredibly weighty desperation felt throughout the entire case. 10/10.

A fan case, or a fanfiction where Trucy is Pheonix's co-coucil. I need some more of Trucy and Pheonix's father-daughter bonding in my life.

The Constant Iris debates are getting old so can we like, end them already?

    Posted: 17 Jun 2020 04:04 PM PDT

Okay so as I mentioned on my old account u/AceDemoMuse76, I may have screwed up. I took the cut in r/AARankdown very very badly to the point where I am really embarrassed with myself. And now, there's an Iris debate every other day and I noticed people are getting annoyed with it.

I don't know if I am to blame for this, but regardless, I feel like maybe it's time to cool down the arguments with her.

This is really to try and help the mess that I've created (I think), and if it only makes things worse, then I suppose I just am not fit to be a part of reddit.

I know people are probably really annoyed with me at this point, but I really just want to get closure on this. So lets find out: ...Did the Rankdown really have any affect on Iris' reception... or am I just being a drama queen?

(PS. PLEASE PLEASE DO NOT START ANY OVERHEATED DEBATES IN THE COMMENTS.)

(PPS. Okay truth be told, I'm really just doing this so I can finally stop whining about "OH WHY AM I ALONE OR DOES ANYONE LIKE IRIS ANYMORE OR" because that's probably getting REALLY annoying as well, right?)

(PPPS. I really hope I didn't kill this subreddit with my bull. If I did, then maybe it is time for me to leave)

I can't open the wallet on case 5 on the first game for the DS

    Posted: 17 Jun 2020 08:01 PM PDT

I don't know if I'm in the correct subreddit so if I'm wrong please correct me. I recently started playing the first ace attorney game for the DS but on the fifth case when you have to examine a wallet the option to examine it never appears I've searched multiple walkthroughs and tried what they did but nothing worked, i think I might be because I'm in an emulator. any help is appreciated.

    Phoenix Wright's Parents (head canon)

    Posted: 17 Jun 2020 11:14 PM PDT

Hello I'm a lurker and just wanted to have a discussion about this. We get a lot of details on everyone's families in the lore and I think the developers keep it ambiguous so you can relate easier but this is just my head canon that Nick's parents are like Mandark's parents. from dexter's laboratory. Very artsy and liberal. I don't know where I heard it from but it was said that his parents were disappointed he didnt pursue his art career.and it sort of came off to me that his parents pretty much beatniks.
