Spirit of Justice: The Passing of the Torch from Phoenix to Apollo *BIG Case 5 Spoiler* Posted: 25 May 2020 11:04 PM PDT At the time I'm writing this, I've just finished my replay of Spirit of Justice, and I have several thoughts regarding it. First of all, the game didn't hold up compared to my memory of how it was. That's not what this post is about, but that observation leads directly into my next observation. I don't make many posts, so spoiler warning for Spirit of Justice Case 5 if somehow my spoiler tag fell through somehow. When I would look back on this game, I'd reflect on the many groundbreaking revelations across the game and their believable emotional impact. I clearly remember the heartbreak I felt watching both Apollo and Nahyuta struggle with the possibility that Dhurke had died. But in playing the game again, I realized how kind of disappointing Apollo's struggle with it was. Let's review how it went down. Apollo makes the claim that Dhurke was dead, and everyone thinks he's a crazy person. He requests Ema checks the sarcophagus. Apollo begs for her to present information that refutes his claim. She reveals he's dead. Everyone is shocked. Phoenix says "Apollo...", in which Apollo does a unique animation of smashing his forehead against the desk. Apollo has two separate flashbacks of Dhurke (from the same conversation might I add). Suddenly, Apollo puts on a brave face and forces himself to continue the trial and prove Dhurke's innocence. He shows few sign of hesitation from that point forward, only in the form of very basic emotional thoughts of "Dhurke...." every once in a while. This scene betrays everything Apollo represented to me and Dhurke's purpose as a character. First of all, I think we can all acknowledge Dhurke's existence was to kill him off for plot development. I admit, they did it in an effective way. However, you don't shove all development for a character in the same case you kill them off in if your intention was not to kill them off from the beginning. I'm not complaining about that (even though I think they should've began their development way earlier - maybe characterizing him through a chat with Phoenix) - I'm complaining that the moment he exists for (the character development for Apollo and Nahyuta) is just kind of brushed off. That moment may have existed for players to feel sympathy for a great man lost, but it primarily existed for development in Apollo and Nahyuta and the player's view of them. That's why this moment feels cheap to me - it was a good idea, but it failed to achieve the magnitude it was created for. I don't see elaborate characterization for Apollo - I see a way for the players to feel sad and the vague semblance of development for Apollo in the way that he's strong enough to carry on and that he's inherited his teachings. Second of all, speaking of Apollo, why the fuck did they decide to let him get over it so quickly? I acknowledge they frame it like it was killing him inside, but only him smashing his head into the desk?? That's all we get besides a few flashbacks?? I've always seen Apollo as the normal person in an absurd world, and specifically, the person the player is supposed to relate to. He always seems like the only sane person in the room, acknowledging when something that's going on is crazy when other people see it as perfectly normal. He hated Dhurke for abandoning him, and the player can understand why. Apollo is supposed to be the person the player can understand the most. His actions are understandable, and he isn't very quirky like everyone else in the universe. However, if I was in his shoes in that moment and I had found my father had been dead and I could've done nothing to prevent it, I would not have been able to tough it out due to a couple of words of encouragement my father had said to me once. I believe the writers should have made Apollo much more distraught than they went with. I know they tried to categorize him as strong, but I feel they made the moment much less impactful as a result. I know many of you will feel he shouldn't have been inserted, but I feel it's neccessary. Phoenix was the answer on how to make that scene impactful. Here's how I would've done that scene. Ema reveals that Dhurke is dead. Apollo, as he does in the game, smashes his forehead against the desk. Hundreds of thoughts go through his head. Memories of them being together, Dhurke's dumb jokes, Dhurke saving Apollo. Then it turns into regrets, many of them being completely foolish - which is exactly how many in the process of grieving feel. "I should've come back instead of trying to forget about him" "I should've come to Khur'ain with Mr. Wright so Maya wouldnt have been abducted and Mr. Inga wouldnt have been able to shoot him" "I never should've let him leave me here in the U.S" The idea that you could've stopped it. Anyone who lost someone to any tragedy that cut their life short knows the feeling. "...Maybe if I had tried harder, he would still be alive." Ga'ran, while Apollo is clearly having an internal destruction, makes a snide comment. Something about how "good riddance" that the traitorous snake is dead, and how the world is better for it. We then see Apollo with another unique animation - enraged. Apollo, with tears streaming down his face and an expression of pain and anger, throws insults and verbal abuse towards Ga'ran. She remains silent, perhaps a "Hmph". The judge is shocked, he doesn't even tell Apollo to stand down due to his towards "Her Eminence". Apollo calms down, but continues to be in pain with his head against the desk. He remembers Dhurke's words "The truth may be hard, but I know you can handle it. You're my son after all!" and "A Dragon Never Yields". Apollo questions "Can I really... continue to fight?" The options are "Continue to fight" "Give up" Now, something meta happens here. Clearly, the player picks "Continue to fight" but they can't. Not sure how, maybe the option breaks into pieces or burns to a crisp (if we want to remember his actual father), but you can't. The player is forced to pick "Give up". Apollo says "(I'm sorry Dhurke... I'm not strong enough to go on.)" "(I know I'm betraying everything you ever taught me but...)" "(...I don't have the will to continue.)" "(Am I even worthy to be called your son?)" "(...to be called a defense attorney?)" "(..........................)" I'm going to write out how I imagine all the text goes from here. It won't be perfect, but... ???: ".........Apollo........." ???: "........Apollo, look at me......." Apollo: "(........Hm?......)" ???: "Apollo, look at me. Right. Now." Apollo: "M-Mr. Wright?" Wright: "I don't envy you Apollo. I can't begin to imagine all the emotion you're feeling right now..." "But I'm not letting you stop now." Apollo: "Sir, but I-" Wright: "No but's. Apollo, let me ask you a question - Why do you think I've acknowledged you to the point where I would entrust everything to you?" Apollo: "Because... you wanted for me to grow?" Wright: "Wrong. I entrusted everything to you because I know you have the strength to carry on." Apollo: "But.... but what if I can't?!" "My first case, you were only found innocent because you were there to guide me!" "I couldn't prove Kristoph was the man who ruined your life, so I had to rely on you changing the court system!" "I doubted Athena while blaming myself for not being able to save Clay!" "I let Trucy be arrested for murder and almost lost let the agency you've had for years, all because you were abroad!" "And now, I've let Dhurke die, and I am the reason that the revolution he's worked so hard on could end in an instant!" "Tell me.... what right do I even have to wear this badge? Wright: "...You've blamed yourself every step of the way, haven't you?" "I'm sorry I didn't notice sooner." "But you're wrong." Apollo: "!" Wright: "Your first case, you had the strength to deny your mentor's requests in the courtroom to help me, a shamed hobo, so you could find the truth." "You had the strength to fight your mentor face-to-face, to reveal all his crimes and clear my name." "Your belief was strong enough in Athena, that you were able to examine every last possibility in how the killer committed the crime, and thats why we were able to save her." "You had the strength to face the man you grew up with in court, all to save everything dear to you and I, and you succeeded." "You had the strength to protect the Founder's Orb, Dhurke's last hope in you. You carry the fate of everything he has ever worked for on your shoulders." "You've never provided a reason for me to doubt you. I am proud of who you are and what you've done." Nahyuta: "visibly shaken.............." Apollo: ".............." Wright: "...I met my mentor when I was on trial for murder." Apollo: "(! He's... always held back on talking about his mentor....)" Wright: "I was a brat. I ate a necklace that would've proved me innocent had I not done so. But she continued to believe in me. Even through all the grief I put her through." "...She's the one who taught me how to be strong." "Don't you see Apollo? My ability to cause grief for the people around me has never stopped... but I never had to teach you to be strong." "You found your way all on your own." Apollo: "I can't say it was all on my own... Dhurke was a large influence on me." Wright: "Now is not the time to deny his lessons then." "...you know, it struck me as really funny." "'Dragons never yield' and 'The toughest times are when lawyers have to smile the brightest' really embody the same principle." "You can't give up, Apollo. Not when you're needed the most." "But, I know you won't give up. I wouldn't be standing here, putting my life on the line if I thought you couldn't do it." "I'll stand with you until the bitter end." Apollo: "Mr. Wright.... I-" Wright: "I know you hesitated earlier, and I don't blame you. Few people wouldn't have thrown in the towel in that situation." "But that's why I'm here. I can't let you give up - I wouldn't be able to call myself your mentor if I did." "Because I know you have more left in you." "A hungry dragon is waiting." Apollo: "Mr Wright... thank you for everything." Phoenix: "I think you've realized it, but I have nothing left to teach you." "Now, let's finish this." "Let's save that man and carry out everything Dhurke entrusted to you." Is it cheesy? Definitely. Is it lengthy? Yes, 100%. But I think this was the most effective way to end the character arc they had built for Apollo. Phoenix had been touted as a mentor, but we very rarely saw him do anything. In Dual Destinies, he rarely taught. But this game felt like making a big deal of taking the lessons from those before us and building on them. They provide little reason to believe Phoenix had done anything of the sort though. I feel this cheesy ass speech from Phoenix would be the way to demonstrate how much he's grown since panicking on his first day of court, and how much he's matured. Many of us have grown up since we first met Phoenix. Some people are newer, and have blazed through all the games at once, but it's been I believe about 10 years since I've discovered this series. Phoenix giving advice about not giving up to Apollo - would've felt like the amount I've matured since then talking to a younger me. I feel like symbolically this would've been an amazing way to end the game that said it would refer to much of the past in the series, and shown how much the title character has matured. If you've read this far, thank you so much for taking the time to do. If I somehow made one person amused or enjoy something that almost sounds like fanfiction, I'd feel that writing this wasn't a waste of time. Mostly, I'm curious how you feel about it. Do you agree something like this should've been done? Do you disagree completely? I'm curious. Thank you for reading, I hope you have a wonderful day. I love this series and am happy I was able to share my thoughts on it. [link] [comments] | ||
