Do you people want a real challenge while playing Ace Attorney?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2020 05:54 PM PST

I was listening to Cornered 2004 (yes, I do listen to the soundtrack because it sounds epic) and on a whim thought up something to make you Ace Attorney players want to throw your consoles out the window. We always manage to find the truth, in the end, no matter how many mistakes we make. But how about playing it as Phoenix himself actually would have done it?

In that, I mean we always joke about penalties and how unfair the legal system is for Phoenix. What about making it the most unfair system ever? I'll name this challenge "the Furious Phoenix," though I'd appreciate it if you could come up with a better name.

    For this challenge:

    • You cannot skip any dialogue or speed up the dialogue in any manner in any place, including cross-examination, including by pressing the A button. If you make a mistake and press a piece of dialogue over again, reset ur g4m3 2 case 1, u n00b you have to listen to it all over again as though you were listening to it the first time. This means no repeatedly pressing A to speed through dialogue a second time whether you missed something and want to find it or if you just clicked it again on accident. You have to listen to the whole thing at the exact same pace as you did the first time, no matter what it is.
    • We always have five chances to present evidence to support our client. But what if we were always meant to be on our A-game? Here, you have to ace your way through the case by using up four of five penalties on the first cross-examination of every section of every trial. When the game gives you the inevitable refill, get it back to one penalty on the first cross-examination afterward and continue. This also includes in the tutorial case and Turnabout Big Top, even the Moe sections.
    • When doing psyche-locks, do the same, getting to the end of the confidence gauge on the first lock before proceeding with the segment. This applies to every psyche lock segment. Do the same for the next psyche-lock segment after getting the refill.
    • Also, you have a time limit on court-room segments (I don't care how you time it): 20 minutes maximum per cross-examination after the first one, which is 25 minutes, to account for the penalties (which I think is generous). If you don't get it in time, then present your best guess. Take no more than one minute deciding. If it's right, kudos to you!

Again, if you have any better suggestions for the name, please do give it! I'd love one.

P.S. I am sorry, lol. Please don't hate me.

TIL: a lot of Ace Attorney is Japanese political commentary on the justice system

    Posted: 03 Jan 2020 07:29 PM PST

I have really been enjoying Ace Attorney games as of late.In the game I presumed the silly characters like the; machiavellian prosecutors, that will reach a conviction regardless of ethics, and the easily swayed but well meaning judge, to be apart of the silly writing and nothing more. Today I learned that is not the reason (at least the main one).

I leaned conviction rate in Japan is above 99%. This is because of many factors but there are two big factors. One, judges are politically pressured to pass guilty verdicts (keep in mind Japan doesn't use a jury). Two, the perfectionist culture of Japan and the ability of prosecutors to decide what they want to prosecute, results in prosecutors only taking cases they can win.

In the first three games you are almost always facing a prosecutors with a perfect record. That becomes agitated when you get a not guilty verdict, often saying they will win the next one. This is a commentary on prosecutors in Japan being more concerned with their guilty recorded rather then having justice be done. This very commentary was central to the stories musings about; what justice is, why we should find it and how do we arrive to it best.

This notion takes root best in Edgeworth the main prosecutor throughout the first three games. He is a very proud prosecutor that was undefeated and presumed to forge evidence to win some of his cases. After beating him in a few cases he has a revaluation that I brushed off as cheesy and ham fisted, but now I think is more interesting in a Japanese context. He realizes that the job of the prosecutor isn't to fined the defendant guilty, but to make sure the defense attorney doesn't let a guilty man get away. But it is the job of a defense attorney to make sure the defendant isn't convicted of a crime he didn't commit. To him this process is the best way to find the truth and dull out justice.

Finally in the forth game (I don't believe this one was directed by its original creator), the final case is all but sure to not be your defendant but another person that has already been questioned. Unfortunately all the evidence you have proving it was him is circumstantial. Thus no verdict can be reached by the judge and you're defendant would be presumed guilty. Luckily, they are trying a new legal system that uses a jury. Because "peoples common sense" is sometimes more useful then perfect defense arguments. They find your defendant not guilty by one vote. The commentary being there needs to be reform back to the jury system or at least some hybrid.

Sorry for the wordy post I just thought it was interesting, I didn't know that much Japan's justice system and thought I would share.
