I figured I might shake things up, this isn’t just fanart or artwork by designers. This was an official advertisement in the subways of Japan in 2017, and this is Daily Ace Attorney Art Post #42: The Ace Attorney Gallery

I did this one on a night when I was super bored and couldn't sleep, it was fun

    Posted: 22 Dec 2019 08:29 PM PST

Just played through the first case of The Great Ace Attorney in one sitting and…

    Posted: 22 Dec 2019 06:17 PM PST

This is hands down the best first case in the series. It's a hot take but judging by how enjoyable the first case was, I predict the DGS duology is going to be even better than the original trilogy.

Wanted to get all my thoughts out before I forget so long essay incoming with minor spoilers after TL;DR

TD;LR - Fun dialogue that never feels like it's dragging on, engaging and inspiring characters, amazing character development over a single trial, best music I've heard in any video game soundtrack, and hilarious wrong options to choose from. Takumi's back and better than ever.

    Characters

Characters typically take an entire game or in some cases multiple games to get proper development but Ryuunosuke Naruhodō went from constant cold sweat and eyes darting all over the place to confident desk slammer over the course of a single trial. Takumi does a fantastic job of showing and not telling Ryuunosuke's growth. Ryuunosuke isn't like Phoenix who was able to come out guns blazing at his first trial, but instead subtly begins to fill those shoes little by little. At the start of the trial Ryuunosuke has zero confidence in himself and is prepared to take the guilty plea the minute it's offered to him even though he knows he's innocent. When he presses and objects he says SIR instead of the usual HOLD IT or OBJECTION and when he does he's always at a loss for words. However as Kazuma Asōgi pushes and encourages Ryuunosuke to just say what's on his mind, Ryuunosuke starts shedding his soft-spokenness. As Kazuma affirms his belief in Ryuunosuke's innocence and his abilities as an attorney, Ryuunosuke goes from soft desk slams accompanied by eyes darting to his hands as if he were shocked by his own actions to the patented self-assured desk slam we've seen Phoenix do time and time again. Ryuunosuke's confidence in himself builds and builds until the moment he shouts OBJECTION and does the finger point for the first time marking the highlight of the trial and the birth of a new Ace Attorney.

Outside of Ryuunosuke we also meet his best friend Kazuma Asōgi. At first glance one can liken their relationship to the one Phoenix and Miles have, but the relationship dynamic between Ryuunosuke and Kazuma is so much stronger. Ryuunosuke and Kazuma feed off each other's energy with Ryuunosuke learning to be confident from Kazuma and Kazuma learning the importance of believing in oneself and in others from Ryuunosuke. There is the occasional snide remark toward one another but it couldn't be any clearer that they have the utmost respect for each other. Kazuma is willing to miss out on his opportunity to study in London to defend Ryuunosuke and Ryuunosuke is prepared to defend himself so as to not inconvenience Kazuma.

It was also nice to see side characters like Detective Satoru Hosonaga have such strong beliefs in being as thorough as possible in investigations. He went out of his way to preserve evidence of his own accord even though that had not become customary in Japanese investigations. He isn't a one-dimensional character who does investigations because he has to, but because he believes in the difference that his work can make.

    Dialogue

This was quite long for a first case but at no point did it ever feel like it was dragging out. The dialogue did a great job of balancing out playful banter, funny moments, suspense, and unexpected twists. There's even extra dialogue to be had by examining pieces of evidence in more detail which has usually only been done when prompted in other games.

    Attention to Detail

Small things like having the characters turn towards each other when they're speaking in front of you along with more animations outside of the usual shocked, finger point, and looking through the evidence animations make DGS stand out from DD and SOJ. It allows characters to convey the emotions in a much more fluid manner. I would especially like to note that the way Taketsuchi Auchi does that motion with his hands stretching outward before bringing them together and bowing his head is hilarious and makes him the best Payne/Auchi.

    Music

The soundtrack is absolutely breathtaking. The music fits the ambience of the game perfectly and is the most beautiful soundtrack not just in the Ace Attorney series but in any video game I've ever played. As always the music fits the moments they're used perfectly - Ryuunosuke's Objection theme playing after spending the whole trial building up to his first objection and Pursuit playing when the condescending culprit finally begins to panic. The music had a grand sound to it befitting the game's title. There's a sense of adventure and fun and every track stays true to that theme. My absolute favorite part of the soundtrack so far has been Kazuma Asōgi's theme. Easily the best character theme to date.

    Conclusion

Thanks for reading this long essay and if you haven't played DGS yet, do yourself a favor and pick it up ASAP.

HUGE THANK YOU to Scarlet Study for their hard work in translating the DGS games! You guys are the real MVPs.

    Edgeworth in I-4

    Posted: 22 Dec 2019 07:50 PM PST

So I have a general question regarding Edgeworth in I-4. Did it bother anyone else how he was written here? This case is meant to take place in the past and Edgeworth at this point was the height of Von Karma influence, I mean this is the guy that told Phoenix his mentor's tactics were pathetic (or something of the sort during 1-2) and during the flashback in 3-4 we see Edgeworth was just as aggressive then too. I understand obviously we're playing as Edgeworth in I-4 so it would be hard to make him as much of a douche while we play as him but he feels practically the same as he does in the other cases in the game. The only difference is that in the other cases he is chasing the truth and in this one he is chasing "the perfect explanation" but those ultimately result in the exact same thing.

Also, just for reference of what I'm really trying to say, Edgeworth in 1-2 and 1-3 doesn't necessarily influence who the police arrest. The police arrest Maya, and he wins the case for them. That's at least the understanding I always had, and he didn't really care if they were innocent or guilty, rather whoever the police arrested, it was his job to find them guilty at all costs whether that meant tampering with evidence, or witness testimony, he got a guilty verdict. So it would have been interesting to see him play that kind of a role in the past. I understand of course that then we'd never really figure out what happened but I'm sure that could have been written around. Either way, it just bothers me that Edgeworth isn't really that much different pre-trilogy vs post-trilogy when you play as him.

Edit: I will say that this case did a good job of showing me why Gumshoe respects Edgeworth though. If he was able to so effectively find the truth in the case that involved him it makes sense that he would trust Edgeworth's judgement in general.

If Miles Edgeworth could use his Logic as a psychical weapon, how powerful would it be?

    Posted: 22 Dec 2019 05:34 PM PST

To those who have played/watched the two Investigations games, you would know just how powerful Edgeworth's logic can be. What if he could use it as a physical weapon? How powerful would his Logic be in physical form?
