Decided to Make a TGAA Character Tier List. That's it. Marked Spoiler Just in Case.

    Posted: 15 Sep 2021 06:40 PM PDT

I just finished TGAA2-2 and need to rant a bit

    Posted: 16 Sep 2021 12:30 AM PDT

Hi everyone! Before anyone says it, yes, I still haven't finished The Great Ace Attorney. I just like to take my time.

Anyway, I finished TGAA2-2, Memoirs of the Clouded Kokoro yesterday and had some time to think about it.

A lot of you have already finished the TGAA duology and posted your tier lists and I believe, the general consensus is that TGAA has no bad cases (and if people had to name one as their least favourite, it would have to be TGAA1-4). After finishing TGAA2-2 I beg to differ... slightly.

First of all, I did like the setting of the case. The idea of a continuation of a case from the previous game is a really interesting idea. The twist of Shamspeare accusing Natsume for trying to kill him, even though it was the other way around, Olive Green (who I liked a lot) taking revenge for Shamspeare's previous murder and setting a trap for him that would only activate if he actually was the killer, that was all great stuff. Figuring out the ice coin trick was also great.

But something about the case rubbed me the wrong way, but I couldn't quite put my finger on it. Then I figured it out - Memoirs of the Clouded Kokoro is a lot like Turnabout Big Top!

People often bring up that they dislike Turnabout Big Top, because its characters act inhuman, i.e. "My very dear friend just died, but instead of grieving or helping solve his murder, I'd rather tell jokes in court."

And in TGAA2-2 it's the same thing! "Even though I'm on jury duty in court, I don't care about the case, because I must talk about gas right now!"

The jury is just terrible! They don't care about the case at all but still manage to have a strong opinion about everything! And yes, it's obvious why they start talking about gas all of a sudden - because that's the key to solving the case, obviously. You, as the player, know that. But in-game it makes no sense why everyone should suddenly talk about gas for no good reason. And I don't mean jury member number 4, who at least has some reason, but members 2 and 3 as well (who, for some reason, don't act at all like they did in TGAA1-4). It's like Shu Takumi couldn't figure out a natural way to introduce that plot point.

Speaking of the jury, I thought is was a really bad choice to just reuse the jury from TGAA1-4. I always get excited to see what kind of people will be in the jury every case, so it was very disappointing to see those bozos again. Come to think of it, this jury group is easily the most incompetent one.

Another point is Shamspeare's character. First of all, he is ungodly annoying. A character for all those who didn't fine Max Galactica annoying enough already (hey, another parallel to Big Top!) He's easily the worst character Shu Takumi has ever written (that didn't come from Apollo Justice). Secondly, his Shakespearian English makes no sense to me. First of all, I thought Shamspeare was supposed to be Shakespeare, just like Herlock Sholmes is supposed to be Sherlock Holmes. But no, apparently Shakespeare exists in the Ace Attorney universe and Shamspeare decided to copy him, because... because he had a really unfortunate name, I guess? But it is never mentioned, why Shamspeare talks and acts like he does, other than "He's weird".

Then there's Adron B. Metermann who rivals Penny Nichols for being the most uninteresting Ace Attorney character. Yes, he looks like a bee. That's all there is to his character.

Also there was a big inconsistency with Barok van Zieks. On Trial Day 1 he is his usual self, being a racist and degrading Ryunosuke at every corner, nothing new here. But on Trial Day 2 he is suddenly so much more forthcoming and helpful, but there isn't any reason why. He just a lot nicer in Trial Day 2. Maybe he just had a headache the previous day...

Another thing that bothered me (which bothers me with many TGAA cases) is the summation examination. There seems to be this rule of having 2 summation examinations per case (like it was with Logic Chess in AAI2), but sometimes they feel extremely forced. I'm talking about the second one especially. You've just proven that>! there was no poison in Natsume's tea!<. That's good! So how was Shamspeare poisoned? I don't know yet... And the jury's reaction is to immediately all vote for a guilty verdict! It felt so incredibly forced! It was like the script said "add summation examination here" with no reason given as to why. It's just very poorly handled.

Lastly the "hook" of this case was handled very poorly. It's all a flashback, because this case hides "the key to a big mystery that takes place behind the scenes". Sounds intriguing. Only problem is that this clue is revealed in the last 30 seconds of the case. Of this 6 hour case only the last 30 seconds matter. Oops.

So, that's it. Sorry for the long rant. I don't exactly consider TGAA2-2 a "bad" case, more of an "okay" one.

What is your opinion of the case? For some reason I have barely seen anyone on the subreddit talk about this particular case.
